This is a benefit to sites like this...before seeing this, I might have this idealized notion that I would jump in and help in this situation, underestimating how easily I could die due to some dumbass dragging me down

One of the big reasons lifeguards have such powerful flotation devices is because fighting with a drowning person is a losing battle 9/10 times ( unless they're super weak or a child )
Getting them something solid to float with pretty much solves the problem. Without that, congratz they'll think you're the floatie. As seen above, never works out. Only advice ive heard is if someone is drowning and clinging on to you, swim deeper. They tend to panic and let go.
