One of the big reasons lifeguards have such powerful flotation devices is because fighting with a drowning person is a losing battle 9/10 times ( unless they're super weak or a child )
Getting them something solid to float with pretty much solves the problem. Without that, congratz they'll think you're the floatie. As seen above, never works out. Only advice ive heard is if someone is drowning and clinging on to you, swim deeper. They tend to panic and let go.

this made me search and learn how to rescue a drowning person! Contact should be last chance, either throw them something buoyant or pull them to safety with a pole/rope. If you gotta touch them approach from behind and lock your arms behind their armpits, then swim on your back to safety. Drowning made you go feral, can't control arms and will grab and drag down anything you can get
