To this day I don't understand ppl that can't swim. I never learned technically, but I know how to float, or doggie paddle. The ocean for me is a far different story (obviously) as I've been pulled into an undertow once. This little bit of water tho? I just don't get it. How is it not natural for some to float and drift to the shore in this small area?

I’d think that most people who drown do so because they overestimate their abilities in the water. People can get lulled into a sense of safety while wading through waist deep water, but once it gets to a depth you need to swim, they sink.

Most people who don’t know how to swim, don’t know how to float. It’s actually one of the first things you learn in swim lessons. It’s not something people just inherently know how to do, most people need to be taught that.

I feel the same, but i learned to swim when i was about 4-5 years old because my mom worked as a swimming instructor. So for me it just seems unfathomable that someone can't figure out the simple motions to stay afloat?

If you haven't learned to swim, the instinctive drowning reflex will take over and your body will do nothing except flap your arms, against the water or anyone nearby, to try to keep your head above water.
