I’d think that most people who drown do so because they overestimate their abilities in the water. People can get lulled into a sense of safety while wading through waist deep water, but once it gets to a depth you need to swim, they sink.

but if you just hold your breath and float on your back then how would they drown..? i call it a lack of common sense.

Most people who don’t know how to swim, don’t know how to float. It’s actually one of the first things you learn in swim lessons. It’s not something people just inherently know how to do, most people need to be taught that.
