I think the only relevant backstory is they didn't know to stay out of the water if they couldn't swim, especially since they couldn't see the bottom. I can't even imagine how horribly this incident is going to scar that poor child.

yeah, what people don’t realize when they go out to save someone that’s drowning usually that person is in survival mode. when you grab onto them, they will push you down or hold on to you so they can get a breath

NEVER try to save a drowning person without a lifejacket or ring. They'll push off of you to stay above water, and you'll just go back and forth drowning each other. One of the first things they teach you as a lifeguard.

If you don’t have a life jacket or floatation device like in this scene, what would have been the best thing the woman could have done to help? I guess some kind of long stick for the drowning person to grab?

Whip off your shirt, hold one end and try get them to grab the other to pull them to safety. Main thing is to avoid being grabbed so they dont pull you under. If you are grabbed, hold your breath and dunk under the water pulling them with you. Theyll likely release you, push away. Get to safety and re-assess.

Not gonna lie, i always find it a bit hilarious when people drown in calm water, close to the shore on top of that. I get that drowning can be caused by multitude of things and made worse by people panicking, but you can see on 0:10 even the kid can still reach the ground.
