I wonder if they teach coast guard rescue swimmers to knock people out so they don’t get drowned by them, or if I’ve seen too many movies

Yes you are actually taught to gain control of the victim sometimes it can be necessary to strike an individual to gain control over them

If you’re going to try to save a drowning person you’re gonna have to deal with them flailing and pulling you under in an attempt to reach the surface. You’ll have more success knocking them out and pulling them to safety.

In the back of my head I think the way to save someone if you're both in the water is to wrap your arms around their chest from behing and kick so you go backwards, that way they can't be pulling you down with them. Or you know, rope or a shirt for them to grab and you pull them to land.

Its such a short time - I think its 30 seconds to 1 min 30 that someone can be activly drowning and then after thats its basically recovering a body.

This happened to me once. I was only a teenager but a decent enough Swimmer, but having someone struggling to swim, drowning and desperately pulling you under with them is next level terrifying shit. I was dunked under multiple times. And I didn't even intend to "save" them, I was just suddenly grabbed onto

The situation that got me out was something just snapped in me, and I decided to dive down instead, complete self preservation kicked in and teen me knew I was out of my depth, the other kid obviously couldn't follow me or grip onto me down there, I actually distinctly remember them "kicking" my back/buttocks while I dove down as they used my body as a platform to jump up for another breath.. anyways was fuckin fine and popped out a meter or two away. Kid ended up fine Lifeguard got to him/her, but it taught me if they're not letting me swim back up without them, then I'll have to swim down. You still couldn't waterboard me into going into to rescue a drowning person.

Still no idea how kid me was smart enough to come up with that on the spot while also thinking younger me it was a good idea to play dare by sticking my head underwater in between the ladder notches and getting stuck to see who could get out the fastest. God Kids are fucking dumb.

Very sad to watch. People should at least go find something to throw down for them to grab on.

Also pretty educational video for me to see what happens when you try to save a drowning person.

It's better to grab a person drowning from behind for this exact reason. If they grab and push you under water try to swim deeper under water and further away from them.

I spent five 5 years as a lifeguard. If a someone is drowning and they grab you like that, you can easily escape them by swimming straight down and then away. If you don't have a rescue device your best bet is to approach from behind them hook your arms under their arm pits and frog kick on your back with them on your front. This keeps their face out of the water and the victim will usually stop thrashing.

Like someone mentioned, the first guy went in to retrieve a piece of driftwood for guy #2 that jumped in after him, and neither of them had a chance. This is apparently a notorious spot where many have drown because of the undercurrent.

Guys they did not drown due lack of swim skills, I saw this before on an article, a very strong current started pulling them in, the second guy had no clue, this is why they dive in so quick as soon as they got unconscious.

Like the guy in the white t shirt that tried got pushed under and died along with the other one he was trying to save?

Sometimes it is better not to be the hero and go home than fail at being a hero and not getting to go home.
