No they aren't. They paid thousands to coyotes to get them this far. They're trying to get to Europe so they can either earn more money or be benefits scabs. If they were truly desperate, they would have stopped in the first safe country they entered rather than passing through a dozen on their way to northern Europe.
The real desperate ones are stuck at home because they can't afford to leave their home countries.

My grandfather was active duty coast guard, and he couldn't swim. I agree it's pretty dumb tho. But I just wanted to bring up an even stupider thing.
