I don't even think you'd have to be standing directly beneath the tree to feel the effects of a lightning strike. Once a tree is struck, the heat literally travels down through the roots.

You do not want to be the highest object or near the highest object in an outdoor space during a thunderstorm.
Generally, being struck by lightning is just super unlikely, so don’t stress about it, but avoid behaving like a lightning rod and you’ll minimise the already tiny risk.
