Hanging on to just a rope is actually pretty fucking hard if you don't know any techniques of quickly wrapping it around your legs or arms to create friction. Why TF would they try a rescue with just a rope? That's fucking ludicrous. Even with a rope ladder you stand a chance, but a bare rope? Most people will fall.
