The Life, Crimes and Imprisonment of Luka Magnotta.

Luka Magnotta's real name is Eric Clinton Kirk Newman, born on July 24th, 1982 in Scarborough, Ontario (Canada).

His parents Don Newman and Anna Yourkin, had 4 children, Eric (Luka) was the eldest child.

Eric was raised by his maternal grandmother, Phyllis Yourkin, in Lindsay, Ontario. There was never any discipline in your household. His aunt Louis Yourkin was arrested at aged twenty one and convicted on charges of selling drugs and illegally possessing a firearm.

Childhood.

Eric Studied at School, IE Weldon Secondary School. He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia as a teenager. He left his family on August 12th, 2006. From that moment on, he decided to move from where he was to become Luka Rocco Magnotta, named after Rocco Siffredi.

(Though it is also highly believed took the the Magnotta surname from a main character of a video game called 'The Ripper.')

Beginning in 2003, Magnotta occasionally worked as a stripper. At that time, he was considered bisexual. At some point, he moved to Toronto to start a career as a model and "Jimmy" dancer at a club called Remington on Yonge Street. It was there that one of the other dancers suggested that it would be better to work as a prostitute. Luka didn't like being on stage, nor the times he had to meet at the club, so he decided to be a male escort.

Luka has also worked as a model, once in 2005 and again in 2007, appearing in photoshoots for Fab Magazine as the “Fab Boy” of the month.

In 2005, Luka was indicted along with another man named Anthony Minakakis on a dozen counts of fraud involving the Sears store and an audio and video equipment company. This is after accumulating over $16,000 worth of purchases with a stolen credit card.

At the time, the two lived on Don Mills Road and Sheppard Avenue in Toronto. Luka was sentenced to nine months in prison plus twelve months of probation. The judge also banned him from owning a camera, computer and Internet access.

In 2006, Luka started to love a transgender girl Barbie Swallows. Or man I always had half of that and then I declared that Luka was too violent, not in love. At the time, the tried to distend it like a gel awl.

Luka began to make a strong impression on the Internet. In addition to his Twitter contact information, over 70 Facebook profiles, he has opened 90 YouTube channels, over 20 websites, and has been added to an infinite number of photo sharing pages.

Also, he experimented with hiding behind proxies to exploit the Deep Web.

Luka attempted a career in pornographic films and during the first decade of the 2000s made several appearances in low-budget homosexual pornographic films. However, despite having strange characteristics, Magnotta never achieved notoriety in his environment.

In 2007, Luka was interviewed on the Naked News program, where he stated that he loved his new lifestyle as an expensive escort. However, Luka fell into bankruptcy in March of the same year as his debts were $17,000.

In 2007, there were strong rumours that Luka had a relationship with the murderer and serial killer, Karla Homolka, but he denied it in an interview with the Toronto Sun newspaper. "I never met her," he said.

In 2007, he auditioned for a reality show called CoverGuy. He was trying to earn money to get plastic surgery because he wanted to look like his idol, actor James Dean.

He was also desperate to get a Wikipedia page, but his efforts were blocked and his listings were removed twice. He only managed to be recognized by the Wiki, after becoming an assassin and deluded murderer.

In February 2008, he auditioned to try to win his third hair transplant and plastic surgery, through a program called 'Plastic Makes You Perfect'. Was unsuccessful.

Luka travelled to Hollywood trying to get a job as an actor, but he couldn't. Filled with anger and frustration, he decided to give up his criminal career.

'1 boy, two kittens'.

In December 2010, a video called 1 boy 2 kittens was uploaded to the Internet by a user named Uonlywish500. In it, Luka Magnotta is shown smoking a cigarette and wearing a blue hooded sweater in a dingy room. Gently, he pet two small cats before placing them inside a sealed bag. John Lennon's song "Happy Xmas, War is Over" is heard in the background.

Next, Magnotta turns on a vacuum cleaner and uses it to suck the air out of the vacuum bag. The kittens begin to thrash and scratch, trying to escape the tight polyethylene. After turning off the vacuum, Magnotta opens the bag and proudly holds the body of one of the kittens and points to the camera. Then he takes the dead kittens, puts them in the fridge and takes pictures.

The images caused outrage among hundreds of internet users and two animal advocates. Hundreds of amateur detectives try to identify the cat killer. The video was originally uploaded to YouTube but later removed. A Facebook group titled 'Find the Kitten Vacuumer' had attracted nearly 1,000 members.

Many expressed fear that since the killer killed two defenceless animals, he would also be capable of killing people. They weren't wrong on that score.

'Python Christmas'.

A second video was uploaded soon after. In this one, Magnotta pets a huge Burmese python, before placing a kitten in front of her. The cat tries to defend itself or escape, but it is useless; the huge snake ends up suffocating and eating him alive, while the Christmas song "Little Drummer Boy" plays in the background.

On May 1st, 2011, freelance photographer Paul Mason met Luka at his apartment for a photo shoot.

'Bath Time LOL.'

Luka is shown holding a piece of wood attached to a cat. The animal has its head and body wrapped with duct tape, then Luka places the animal in a bathtub full of water and begins to drown the cat.

On December 8 of the same year, investigations by animal rights defenders led to Luka. Confronted by reporter Alex West about the videos, Luka said there were people pretending to be him on the internet. Luka denied everything about the videos of the euthanized cats.

Two days later, on December 10th, Luka sent an email to The Sun newspaper assuring that in the future there would be new videos, which would contain the death of human beings. At the time? no one took his threats seriously.

On December 21st, 2011, Luka entered the nickname cutelittlenemo1 on a drug forum to ask what the best type of sedative was. “I think liquid morphine is extremely fast, it doesn't take long for the effects to be felt”, was the answer.

On December 22nd, Luka went back online as cutelittlenemo1, saying he was tempted to adopt small animals.

In January 2012, a $5,000 reward was offered to Luka, because of his animal cruelty videos. Nobody got the reward. On March 16th, 2012, Luka posted a message on two blogs about necrophiliac killers.

'1 Lunatic, 1 Ice Pick.'

On April 22nd, 2012, Luka uploaded a video under the username “Rita VanVolkenberg”, titled the Cannibal Serial Killer Luka Magnotta. On Tuesday, May 15th, ten days before the crime that would rock the internet, Luka Magnotta was lurking online, he was using the name alexisvaloranreich, asking if anyone had seen a new video called 1 lunatic with 1 ice pick (1 lunatic 1 ice pike), which was available on the deep web.

He claimed this video was taken by a guy in San Francisco. Luka also posted on May 15th as "Aiden_V," babymaggie11, briankinney556 and "Angela Downs".

About a week before the murder, Luka had a conversation with his neighbour, Derek MacKinnon, on the front steps of his apartment building. Derek was an actor who appeared in several horror films in the 1980s, and also in a short film called The Horror Train, MacKinnon himself played a murderer.

The actor would later say: “Luka invited me to his apartment. It was the first time he spoke to me, I'm glad he didn't accept it”. Other neighbours would also claim to have seen Luka wearing a strange wig.

Lin Jun was a student born on December 30th, 1978 in Wuhan (China). He was also known as Justin Lin. He was pursuing a bachelor's degree at Concordia University's College of Engineering and Computer Science. He also worked part-time as a clerk in Pointe-Saint-Charles. Lin had been studying in Montreal since July 2011 and started having an affair with Luka.

On Thursday, May 24th, 2012, Lin Jun left his house at 5 pm and sent his last text message at 9 pm, before turning off his cell phone. He went to Luka's apartment without imagining what was about to happen.

Luka drugged the boy with morphine, putting it in his drink. As soon as he was unconscious, he completely stripped the boy of his clothes, tied his hands and feet on top of the bed, put a blindfold over his eyes and also gagged the victim.

The Murder.*

Luka turned on his video camera and started filming. As he commits his atrocities, New Order's "True Faith" plays in the background. Luka acted quickly, piercing Lin's body with an ice pick and a kitchen knife.

The poster for the movie Casablanca was visible on the opposite wall. Luka stabbed Lin over twenty times. And then he beheaded the young man who was still alive.

Luka dismembered Lin's corpse, cut off the head, arms and legs and then engaged in anal sex and cannibalism with the corpse.

The next day, on Friday, May 25, 2012, the almost eleven minute video entitled '1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick' was posted on Bestgore.com.

On Saturday, May 26th, a neighbour saw Luka carrying a package to the post office. Then Luka boarded a flight from Montreal to Paris (France). He flew on a fake passport, under "Kirk Trammel". Another alias, believed to be a reference to the movie Basic Instinct, Sharon Stone's ice-pick killer whose character was named 'Catherine Tramell'.

On Sunday, May 27th, Roger Renville, a Montana attorney, attempted to report the video to the Toronto Police and the FBI, claiming that the video was an actual homicide. But the complaint was rejected by the authorities, who told him that it was a ''hoax with good special effects.''

Other Bestgore.com readers also tried to report the video. Later, the police confirmed that it was authentic. Canadian authorities managed to obtain a "broader version" of the video and confirmed its authenticity. That's when they realized it was a real death.

On Tuesday, May 29th, 2012, a doorman named Mike Nadeau found a suitcase on the sidewalk on Decarie Blvd. Inside that suitcase was Lin's torso. But by that time, Luka Magnotta was already in Paris.

That same morning, at 11:00 am, a package containing the victim's left foot arrived at the Conservative Party headquarters in Ottawa. The package was bloodstained and smelled bad. It was marked with a red heart and there was a note inside the package announcing that there would be more murders and that a total of six packages were sent by Canada Post.

Police learned that a second package, addressed to Liberal Party headquarters, was at the Ottawa post office. This second shipment contained the victim's left hand.

They also linked the shipments with the discovery of the trunk in the suitcase. That night, after a search behind 5720 Decarie Blvd, the police discovered evidence that the occupant of apartment 208 was involved in the crime. It was Luka Magnotta's apartment.

The Investigation.

Agents arrived on the scene and found a mattress full of blood, stained clothes and rags, victim and killer IDs, kitchen utensils used to dismember the body, and human blood in the fridge.

Surveillance camera footage from inside the building showed Luka dragging several bags of rubbish. The images correspond to a suspect captured on video at the Côte-des-Neiges post office.

Inside a closet was a sign that read "If you don't like your reflection, don't look in the mirror. I don't care."

On May 30th, it was confirmed that the body parts belonged to Lin.

On Thursday, May 31st, 2012, the police officially issued an international arrest warrant against Luka Rocco Magnotta on five counts: first-degree murder; commit an indignity against a dead body; publication of obscene material; obscene, indecent, immoral or defamatory correspondence; and harassment of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and several Members of Parliament. On the same day, exactly one week after the murder, Interpol issued a red alert for his arrest.

Montreal Police also found Luka's computer, with an unedited version of the murder video. The original video was fifteen minutes long and had no background music. The police tracked Luka to France. Interpol arrived at a hotel in Paris, where they found several objects that belonged to him.

However, Luka had taken a bus to Berlin (Germany). He also posted photos where he appeared in Italy and Moscow.

On Sunday, June 3rd, he posted a new video of him greeting his friends, mocking the police and smoking a cigarette, while listening to the song “La isla bonito” by Madonna.

The next morning, on Monday, June 4th, 2012, a man named Kadir Anlayisli recognized Luka in a Spätkauf internet café in Berlin. He immediately called the police.

At 11:30 am, several agents arrived at the scene. Luka was captured while watching the news about his crime and escape on a computer. He even gave a fake name before admitting it was him. His identity was confirmed through verification of his fingerprint and he did not resist arrest.

On Tuesday, June 5th, two new packages arrived by Canada Post in Vancouver. The first package was opened at 1:00 pm by staff at False Creek Elementary School, a public school. Inside was the victim's right hand.

The second package arrived in the afternoon at St. Georges School, a primary and private school. Inside the package was Lin's right foot. To this day it remains an enigma, why Luka chose these two schools in particular to send Lin's remains. Notes were included in all packages. One note released was a poem he wrote, which he sent with a body part to a school read: “Roses are red, violets are blue, the police will need dental records to identify you. Bitch.” The police refused to reveal what the other notes said.

On Tuesday, June 12th, Lin's family said they were not ready for media interviews, so they offered a statement to be released through the School of Concordia University.

The young man's funeral was celebrated with visible signs of pain and suffering from his parents and friends. His head still hadn't appeared. Lin's body was cremated on July 11th, and his ashes were interred on July 26th at Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, a cemetery in Montreal.

Reactions in China were highly critical, with some believing the murder was racially motivated. Some Chinese people questioned public safety in Canada, as it was the second high-profile killing of a Chinese student in just over a year. On Monday, June 18th, Luka was extradited from Berlin and returned to Montreal to face charges for Lin's murder.

He appeared in court on Tuesday, June 19th and pleaded not guilty to all charges. The preliminary hearing, which lasted just three minutes, was conducted via a video camera. Through the defense, the defendant also rejected his involvement in four other charges, including threats against Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada.

The victim's father Diran Lin, who came from China to attend the proceedings, attended the hearings for a few days, but on March 15th, after hearing the sordid details about his son's death, Diran Lin was forced to leave the courtroom in tears.

Surprisingly, Luka was voted "Man of the Year" by the Canadian media, causing criticism and great controversy. Magnotta spent thirty days in a psychiatric hospital, where he underwent various tests.

On Thursday, June 21st, Luka appeared in person before the judge. The case was adjourned until March 11th, 2013, when a preliminary hearing began. Luka Magnotta's trial had a tentative start date of September 8th, 2014.

On Sunday, July 1st, 2012, Montreal police accidentally discovered Lin's head, a lost part of the victim's body; was found on the shore of a lake in Angrignon Park.

The trial began in September, and on December 23rd, 2014, a jury of eight women and four men returned a unanimous verdict of guilt of multiple charges in 2014, including the first-degree murder of Jun Lin.

He is now serving a life sentence in Quebec's maximum-security Port-Cartier Institution, where he fell in love in 2015 with Anthony Jolin, a convicted armed robber and murderer.

He married the incarcerated prisoner in 2017, Magnotta’s mother Anna Yourkin, was their witness. However, considering they are criminals and their past records, they have not been allowed to spend time together. After their wedding, they were denied a night together in the prison's private room.

Correctional Services Canada said there could be no consummation of the marriage, no honeymoon, or cohabitation. Anthony and Luka were entitled to three nights together, but this could not be implemented.

"CSC [Correctional Services Canada ] does not facilitate in any way marriages being consummated or accommodate any requests to co-habitate" senior communications advisor Avely Serin, adding: "An inmate is not eligible to participate in private family visits with other inmates Sexual activity between offenders is not permitted in federal correctional facilities, and there will be no hanging out with the in-laws, either."

Luka's ex girlfriend Barbie Swallows says she believes the wedding was nothing more than another cry to attention. She said: "This is just his way to get attention and have his name back out in the spotlight by having media outlets writing about him again. The system is a big joke for allowing inmates to get married. What is this, Walt Disney World or something?"

Don't F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer.

His mother, Anna Yourkin, called for his release in 2020 due to a COVID-19 outbreak at the prison, but all requests for his release were denied.

Since then, he has requested to be moved from the maximum-security prison to a medium-security facility. In January 2022, CTV News reported that Magnotta intends to take the federal government to court over delays related to his fight to be transferred.
