That is very possible and most likely the case. They bothered to take an MRI-image, perform surgery and he's on a hospital bed instead of in the morgue.

No. They still could x-ray a dead person for forensic reasons. The guy TOLD hospital staff he did this to himself - but they DON'T believe him.
So evidence of a crime would be gathered.
