Surgery doesn´t treat the underlaying problems that lead to this condition.
This is like fat people getting a stomach reduction. They can´t eat as much after the surgery but the track record is still pretty bad because the addiction to food, the bad habbits and the underlaying psychological problems didn´t get treated. Those people can still eat all the wrong things all day long, just smaller portions but that tiny stomach can be stretched and they put on weight fast when that happens.
That means treating the problems that lead to the condition is the better way to lomng term success.

The main problem is that those going for surgery don't accept themselves. It's a huge lack of self-esteem fueled by plastic surgery propaganda. They think the problem is others not accepting them because humans are naturally wired to believe their unhappiness comes from others. After surgery, they realize their discontent hasn't been addressed. This speeds up the spiral into depression, leading to suicide.
