Queens: Mott Avenue & Smith Place, members of the NYPD Queens CRT team conducted a car stop. After ordering the occupants to exit the vehicle, one of the occupants shot the officer just below his bulletproof vest. Officers immediately transported the officer to the hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
The suspects, Guy Rivera and Lindy Jones, were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller during a traffic stop in Queens. Rivera, the suspected gunman, has 21 prior arrests, including nine felonies, and was released from prison in September 2021 after serving nearly five years for criminal sale of a controlled substance. Jones has 14 prior arrests and was out on $75,000 bail at the time of the incident. The arrests were made after the shooting, which occurred when Rivera allegedly refused to exit the vehicle and fired at Officer Diller, who was struck in the torso beneath his bullet-resistant vest.
