Long Beach, California, United States

A person was fatally shot by Long Beach police on Wednesday because he was allegedly brandishing a firearm.

It happened sometime at around 4:20 p.m., when officers were called to MacArthur Park, located at 14th Street and Gundry Avenue, after receiving reports that someone there was possibly in possession of a gun, according to a statement from LBPD.

Officers arrived and found a man that fit the description, and upon contact saw that he did allegedly have a gun.

They say that the man was brandishing a firearm and failed to comply with their demands to drop the weapon, which led them to open fire.

The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics, where he later died.

On Thursday, he was identified as 46-year-old Los Angeles man Donald Washington by the Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner.

No one else was injured in the incident. Officers recovered a gun from the scene.

Kentwood, Michigan, United States

Police video shows an unmarked Michigan State Police SUV hit a man as he ran from officers in Kentwood last month, followed by Samuel Sterling crying out in pain and officers telling him to lie still and breathe while EMTs were on their way. Sterling, 25, of Grand Rapids, died hours after the crash.

Michigan State Police on Friday afternoon released about 15 minutes of video on YouTube, calling it a “representative sample” of what happened.

“There are multiple variations of these videos due to the number of officers on-scene, but the videos being released are the most relevant and comprehensive,” MSP said in a release. “Redactions have been made to conceal the identity of undercover officers and unaffiliated individuals.”

There are three body camera videos and one dashboard camera video. MSP said they came from a trooper, a Grand Rapids police officer and a Wyoming police officer. MSP said that the detective sergeant who was driving the SUV was not wearing a body camera because he was assigned to a federal task force and the unmarked car did not have a dashcam.

Parents Andrica Cage and Michael Sterling and their attorney were shown the video by state police Friday morning before it was released to the public. They argue police didn't respond quickly enough to their son's cries for help and that the trooper who hit him should face criminal charges.

“I hope they charge him with the most serious crime that they can, because this wasn't no accident,” Michael Sterling said.

Attorney Ven Johnson, who is representing the Sterling family, said the video showed the officers on the scene acting with “callous disregard for human life, let alone disrespect for (Samuel) Sterling.”

“What we saw today was … way too much sound and way too much for any parent's eyes to watch their son writhing and literally moving in such pain, and we now know it's because he was dying,” Johnson said.

Johnson said MSP Director Col. James Grady was there when the family was shown the video.

“Grady reiterated … he personally, after seeing the video on the day of this incident, suspended the trooper without pay. Highly, highly unusual. And it tells us a lot as to what MSP is thinking about the lack of propriety, in other words, the wrongful conduct of this trooper,” Johnson said.

Driver of stolen Lamborghini killed in crash after fleeing LAPD at over 100 mph

RESEDA, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles police have released new video of a stolen Lamborghini fleeing officers at speeds over 100 mph before a violent crash that shredded the vehicle and killed the driver.

The incident happened in the San Fernando Valley in the early morning hours of April 6.

LAPD West Valley officers were on patrol around 5 a.m. when they pulled up alongside a gray 2019 Lamborghini Huracan. They noticed the driver was asleep at the wheel while stopped at the red light on Sherman Way at Reseda Boulevard.

They pulled the driver over on Sherman Way and asked for his documents - learning the Lamborghini had been reported stolen and the driver was wanted on multiple felony warrants.

The driver refused to get out of the vehicle, briefly arguing with the officers before taking off down Sherman Way at speeds later determined to have reached 113 mph.

The Lamborghini crashed into the center median only a few blocks away near Vanalden Avenue. As officers approached, they found debris scattered all over the street, and the core of the Lamborghini shredded to pieces.

The driver was launched hundreds of feet from the vehicle - far enough that it took a few minutes for the officers to locate his body.

Paramedics later pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police identified the driver as Elliott Dugan, 51, of Los Angeles

The department is continuing to investigate the incident, including a review to determine if proper procedure was followed. That review is expected to take several months.

"As part of the investigatory process, a pursuit investigation was also initiated," said Capt. Kelly Muniz with LAPD. "This pursuit investigation will be reviewed by the department upon completion for adherence to the law and department policy."

"In the next several months the LAPD will continue to investigate and analyze this incident. We will continue interviewing any new witnesses who may come forward and complete any forensic tests."

Full video of the incident can be seen on LAPD's YouTube channel here.

On April 6, 2024, at around 4:58 a.m., West Valley Division Patrol officers were traveling west in the 18500 block of Sherman Way. As they approached the intersection of Sherman Way and Reseda Boulevard, they pulled up beside a gray, 2019 Lamborghini Huracan, which was stopped for the red traffic light. The officers saw that the driver was sleeping and immediately repositioned their patrol vehicle behind the Lamborghini. Upon the traffic light turning green, the officers activated their police vehicles emergency lights and siren, then conducted a traffic stop on the Lamborghini. An additional Patrol unit that was driving by in the area also stopped to assist with the traffic stop. The driver of the Lamborghini was identified as 51-year-old Elliott Dugan. After questioning Dugan, one of the officers returned to his patrol vehicle, conducted a want/warrant check on Dugan and conducted a vehicle query on the Lamborghini. The queries revealed that Dugan had multiple felony warrants and that Lamborghini had been reported stolen. The officer returned to contact Dugan and made repeated attempts to have him exit the vehicle. However Dugan did not comply with the officers and after several minutes, sped away from the location at a high rate of speed. The officers returned to their police vehicle, activated their vehicle's emergency lights and siren and initiated a vehicle Pursuit. A few seconds after the initiation of the vehicle pursue, Dugan lost control of the Lamborghini while traveling at a high rate of speed and collided with the center median and several trees along the median. The force of the Collision caused Dugan to be ejected from the vehicle. Upon conducting a search for Dugan, he was located several hundred feet away on a nearby sidewalk. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced Dugan deceased. The force of the collision caused the Lamborghini to be split into two main sections. The ensuing debris from the Collision also caused damage to multiple vehicles that were parked along Sherman Way.

Lakemoor, Illinois - Police Officer Brianna Tedesco was on routine patrol at around 5 a.m. on July 26, 2018, when she came across an occupied SUV on a narrow gravel road. The man inside the car, Kenneth E. Martell, 36, was wanted for murder after he tied, robbed, beat and stabbed to death 88-year-old Theodore Garver in his Beaver Township, Pennsylvania home three days prior.

Officer Tedesco found Martell lying down inside the vehicle. She asked him for identification and he gave her a fake name. Officer Tedesco then asked Martell for any written identification and he pointed a handgun at her head. “It became apparent that the tender of a piece of paper was designed to distract Officer Tedesco from what Martell was about to do”

Officer Anthony Loiacono, who was the backup officer to Officer Tedesco, arrived at the scene. He fired one shot, which struck Martell in the head. An autopsy showed that Martell had numerous traces of drugs in his system at the time of his death.

“Based upon the facts gathered in this investigation and a review of the applicable Illinois Statutes, Officer Loiacono acted reasonably and appropriately. Martell's acts of deception and lies to Officer Tedesco were a prelude to an ambush”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Investigators on Wednesday continued working to piece together the timeline of a deadly shooting in east Charlotte that killed four officers and left four others with gunshot wounds, rocking the law enforcement community nationwide and spurring an outpouring of support for the officers and their families.

Civic and religious leaders are asking the community for patience, love and grace as they grapple with the fallout of the deaths: Four families who have lost a husband and a father.

Officials have declined to discuss the specifics of the incident, including whether it was appropriate for law enforcement to engage in a lengthy gun battle in the middle of a neighborhood in the middle of the day.

"We do, like a number of cities across this country, have issues around violence. But I think most of the time we can identify why and how," Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles said Tuesday night following a community prayer vigil. "In this situation, I think once they finish the investigation, we will probably know more about the how and the why. And my goal is that we complete the investigation, we actually learn from what is going on and that we move forward together."

Man shoots his ex-gf in the face and gets killed by Knoxville police - April 27, 2024

Original video:

Knoxville, Tennessee, United States

The Knoxville Police Department body-camera footage from the April 27 police shooting of 25-year-old Jamauri Griffin shows the man firing a gun point-blank into the face of a woman inside her home.

Just before 7:50 a.m. April 27, officers Hunter Powers and Cayden Riddle arrived at the home on Santala Drive for a domestic disturbance call. A caller said a man had shown up at the house and was armed with a gun, a department spokesperson said.

Powers and Riddle entered the house, announcing they were police officers. Almost simultaneously, they see Griffin in front of them, holding a gun and standing close to the woman. As soon as they announced themselves, Griffin lifted his arm and fired point-blank at the woman's face.

The two officers fired multiple times in response, striking Griffin at least one time. The entire sequence from the time officers entered the home until Griffin was shot lasted less than 5 seconds.

The officers cleared away the man's gun and calmed the injured woman. Griffin was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was hospitalized at the University of Tennessee Medical Center for a gunshot wound to her face. Her injuries, police said, were not life-threatening.

https://www.wric.com/news/local-news/richmond/police-release-body-cam-video-911-audio-from-officer-involved-shooting-that-left-20-year-old-dead/

31 March 2024

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Police Department has released dispatch audio and body camera footage from an officer-involved shooting that left a 20-year-old man dead on Easter Sunday.

On Sunday, March 31, at about 5 a.m., officers responded to the 1900 block of Cedar Street for a reported disturbance involving an armed person. During 20-year-old Kenneth Sharp's interaction with officers, police said he pulled a gun. One of the officers then shot him.

Per department protocol, a “critical incident briefing,” or a collection of related audio and video, has been shared with the public in the aftermath of officer-involved shootings.

While the investigation into this incident is ongoing and the involved officer is on administrative leave with pay, this briefing is meant to “provide the public with the details as we [the department] currently understand them.”

The initial call was made to Richmond's dispatch by an unidentified person, whose voice is seemingly altered within the briefing video for privacy reasons. Any identifying information is also redacted.

The caller tells the dispatcher they can see a person lying on the hood of a car. According to the caller, the person had been beating on the car and making a lot of noise, which had woken them up. They then reportedly witnessed the person pull a “long gun” from their pants.

At one point during the call, the caller says they can see the person getting off of the hood of the car. They then tell the dispatcher that the person has gotten inside the car.

When asked to describe the person they're seeing, the caller says the person looks like a Black male in a black hoodie and skinny jeans. They tell the dispatcher that the person's car is parked near a dumpster in the parking lot.

They also describe the gun the person has as the length of a “baseball bat.”

The briefing video then cuts to the initial dispatch shared with officers. The dispatcher describes the situation as explained above and tells the officers the car appears to be a Silver Hyundai.

Two officers responded to the scene. The briefing shows their body camera footage side by side at first before providing a full-screen view of the officer who ultimately shot Sharp. The briefing ends with several screenshots of moments the department wishes to highlight and a few evidence photos.

The officers are blurred within the footage to conceal their identities. The briefing refers to them as “Officer #1” and “Officer #2.”

Officer #1 is seen arriving at the scene first. In the video, he approaches the Hyundai and shines his flashlight inside. Sharp appears to be in the car and the passenger seat. He does not seem to respond to the light or Officer #1's presence.

Officer #1 does not knock on the window or try to get Sharp's attention right away. He can be seen walking away from the car, then back, then away again. At this time, Officer #2 arrives in his patrol car and Officer #1 approaches his driver's side to talk to him.

As they talk, Officer #1 tells Officer #2 that Sharp seems to be asleep. Both officers appear to not be sure why they were called if Sharp is just asleep in his car.

“What do you want to do with it?” Officer #2 is heard asking Officer #1.

“I can knock and see if I can talk to 'em.” Officer #1 says in answer.

Officer #2 exits his cruiser and follows Officer #1 over to the Hyundai. At some point before Officer #1 gets Sharp's attention, Officer #2 rounds the car and stops near its hood on the driver's side.

Officer #1 lightly knocks on the car's passenger side window. Shortly after, either Officer #1 or Sharp opens the passenger side door.

Once the door is open, Sharp can be seen lifting a large gun from the footwell of the car.

The department indicates with screenshots from the footage that it appears Sharp brings his finger “towards the trigger.” The department also indicates Sharp lifts the muzzle of the gun upwards and that it seems to be pointed somewhat in Officer #2's direction.

Officer #2 immediately runs towards his cruiser. As this is happening, Officer #1 stumbles back from the car door. Sharp's foot is seen stepping outside of the car at this time.

Officer #1 runs around the dumpster and has his gun drawn. Officer #2 ducks behind the hood of his police cruiser as Sharp exits the vehicle.

One of the officers calls for Sharp to drop the gun. They do not finish saying this before four shots are fired at Sharp by Officer #2.

Due to Officer #2's being crouched behind the hood of his car and the height of his body camera, as well as the video quality and the lighting, it is not clear if Sharp has his gun pointed at officers. However, he can be seen standing outside of the car and he has the gun in his hand.

At the time of Officer #2's shots, Officer #1 has no visual of Sharp. He runs away from the shots, ducking between two other cars for a few moments before he runs back toward Officer #2 and Sharp. Officer #2 then radios dispatch and tells them shots were fired.

Officer #2 approaches Sharp, with Officer #1 arriving shortly after.

Officer #1 then goes to check on the female occupant in the driver's seat of the vehicle. They ask her if she is alive and she does not audibly answer.

Officer #2 lifts the large gun Sharp had away from him. It seems to have Sharp's blood on it. Both officers audibly catch their breath for a moment before Officer #1 goes around the car and checks on the woman.

The woman begins talking with Officer #1, seeming confused and asking him what happened. He asks if she is okay and she says yes.

All body camera footage ends there.

The Richmond Police Department provided additional evidence photos of the gun in Sharp's possession and the hoodie he was wearing at the time of his death.

The investigation into what happened that morning between Sharp and the two Richmond officers continues.

“Once a full investigative report is complete, the report will be submitted to the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney,” said a spokesperson for the department. “Following the determination from that office, RPD will conduct an internal policy review.”

At this time, neither officer has been identified. Both were placed on administrative leave with pay immediately following the incident. According to the spokesperson, Officer #2 remains on leave but Officer #1 — who did not fire his gun — has resumed his regular duties.

INCIDENT DATE/TIME: 5-5-2024 | 1:51 AM

LOCATION: L-101 & University

AREA/CITY: Tempe

DETAILS:

According to DPS radio traffic:

Just after 1:50 Sunday morning troopers were notified of a 911 caller behind a white older model sedan driving recklessly eastbound on the loop 202.

The caller then advised that the vehicle turned South onto the L-101 towards University Drive.

The vehicle hit the center divider before coming to a stop in the HOV lane.

Troopers arrived and pulled behind the car and attempted to make contact with the driver.

Troopers became concerned the driver would attempt to drive away from the scene given his behavior.

A second trooper arrived and positioned his unmarked patrol car in front of the suspect to prevent him from fleeing.

Troopers repeatedly asked the driver to exit the vehicle, but he refused.

Troopers decided to utilize a pepper-ball gun to coerce the driver into exiting his vehicle.

Pepper balls were deployed and the suspect continued to barricade himself in his vehicle.

Additional resources including a Tempe Police officer with a ballistic shield were called to the scene to aid in the barricade situation.

As the Tempe officer arrived, the driver began accelerating into the back of the unmarked Tahoe.

Troopers approached the passenger side door and broke the window before opening fire on the driver.

Officers deployed a drone to survey the vehicle and determine if the suspect was still moving inside of the vehicle.

Eventually a police K9 was deployed into the vehicle.

The driver was removed from the car and pronounced dead by Tempe Fire.
