Here's some coping mechanisms I've done to help with my sh addiction!

I have been struggling with self harm for 8 years now, it's been hard but here are some coping mechanisms I've found that do help me

The 54321 method: it's something simple but it helps me when I disassociate, basically you count 5 things you can see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell and 1 thing you can taste, this method helps me when I'm in a psychosis episode or anything like that.

Rubber band method: I always have rubber bands around my wrist for the most part, this is for whenever I have really strong urges and I don't want to feel some sort of pain. I use it in crowded places that I know I'll get anxious in.

Calling or texting someone you trust: I understand how hard it can be to ask for help but what I've learned for me is that if I'm busy calling someone or texting them I forget abt a lot of my problems especially if it's someone close to me !

Using ice: Rubbing ice on your skin is something that has also helped me, sometimes it doesn't work but that's ok !

Breathing exercises: Breathing exercises may seem stupid or pretty basic but it's helped me in rough situations and panic attacks, I used to think breathing exercises were just something ppl said were supposed to help but really don't, but they do work !

Listening to music and do something that you like to do: Listening to a comfort band while drawing or reading or even cleaning up can generally calm you down. Getting your mind onto something else and off what's making you wanna cut yourself or relapse can help !

Watching a comfort movie or show: it can be a show you watched when you were younger or just one of your fav movies/shows now ! Watching mop while in a bad space has helped me bc it does remind me of a time where things weren't as bad as they are rn !

Going outside and taking a walk: Going outside and getting out can help you a lot, honestly I don't even like walking but it has helped me so much when in a bad place

Take a nap: Sleeping has always helped me in stressful situations but everyone is different ! Napping may work for someone but not the other person !

Clean up your room: Having a messy space can make you feel shitty, even if it's hard having a clean room has always helped me feel better

Taking a hot shower: Taking a hot shower can help with the urges especially when it comes to wanting to feel pain or anything, but also cleaning yourself can make you feel better as well !

Make something: if your into making anything then making something can be a distraction and a way to help yourself feel proud of yourself !

DO NOT COME ON HERE IF YOUR IN A BAD HEAD SPACE !!: Now don't get me wrong a lot of ppl on here are really close to me and are super nice but coming on here and especially if your deciding to look at the sh Flair DONT. Trust me it will make you feel worse. This isn't me trying to tell you to log off and never come back but honestly coming on here when in a bad head space for me has made me want to cut more.

Just cry it out or scream in your pillow: Sometimes you just need to let your feelings out and that's ok !

I know things are scary right now but I promise you it will get better ! I promise you aren't alone <33 I do hope your doing well and please always make sure to stay safe <333 relapse is apart of recovery and trust me it does happen, but don't give up ! Even small steps are still so important whether you've been 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or 1 year clean you should still be proud of yourself no matter how long you've been clean for !
