Hi everyone!

We have noticed a big influx of self-harmers here who upload photos of their own cuts. If you are one of those people, welcome! Now, let's get straight to the point of this post. We have observed that there has been an increase in romanticizing self-harm, which is something that we are not keen on.

The /h/selfharm flair rarely had OC (original content, the uploader is the one who did the cutting), but there has been a big increase recently. The flair has shifted from "watch someone cut" to "watch my cute cut". Therefore, we want to implement the following rule:

• Comments and posts that encourage/romanticize self-harm will be removed.

We don't want people to rile each other up by commenting on how pretty a cut is. We don't want people to upload their "cute cuts :3". Romanticizing self-harm is not allowed. By enforcing this rule, we hope to reduce these kinds of interactions with all posts.

We hope you understand. If anyone needs help with stopping self-harm or is interested in alternate coping methods that are not as damaging to the body, please let me know :) (been there, done that).

Thank you for your time :marseypeace:!

Hi there! Happy Sunday! A quick reminder on what h/selfharm is and is not.

Since we have now reached Retard Critical Mass (RCM) and the bulk of the newfags seem to be congregating here and in /h/pets, I'd like to take a few minutes to reiterate what this category is and is not for. Mostly the latter, but we'll cover both.

What /h/Selfharm IS NOT For:

  • Still images of your gay little cat scratches

  • Still images of you hitting beans

  • Low effort videos of you scratching styro

  • DISCUSSION TOPICS - WPD IS NOT HERE TO GIVE YOU ADVICE ON CUTTING YOURSELF. How do you even need advice on this anyway? Sharp edge+flesh+pressure. It's literally that simple. That's all it takes. Cavemen were doing it to others with rocks many thousands of years ago, surely you can sort it out on your own with modern technology.

  • THERAPY - WPD IS NOT YOUR THERAPIST. While you almost certainly have people in real life who care about you and want to help you, WPD is both 1) not real life and 2) not here to serve as your confidant or friend. This is not a therapeutic website. This is not for whining about trauma or addiction or whatever. Do that shit in /h/social if you must. People are here, inexplicably, to see blood and guts. Not read your bitching.

  • Encouraging self-harm. If someone becomes seriously injured or dead because of your encouragement, guess who's on the hook legally for that shit? Yeah, that's you. Not WPD. Don't do it. We have zero tolerance for this and it's for your own protection.

What /h/Selfharm IS For:

  • Videos of people inflicting nonlethal harm upon themselves. This can be bladed, it can be fire, it can be bruising, it can be whatever.

  • Especially gnarly pictures of the above, I suppose.

I hope this clears things up. Please stop posting your stupid irrelevant shit here. We have literally 3 jannies, they can't keep up with this avalanche of nonsense.

This thread will mostly focus on Cutting although I encourage you to learn more about all of them

Biggest Question:

Why did you start cutting?

I first cut when I was like 8 or 9. I was frustrated and had heard about it from TV and pop culture. I thought it would be worth trying.

Recently my closest friend relapsed back into self harm, so I wanted to write this info thread to not only tell why someone might do it but to also get a users perspective!

Self harm comes in may forms, cutting or burning one's skin, punching or hitting yourself, poisoning yourself with tablets or toxic chemicals, misusing alcohol or drugs, deliberately starving yourself or binge eating, or exercising to much. Oxford defines it as:

"Deliberate injury to oneself, typically as a manifestation of a mental condition."

Why would someone Self Harm? In most cases, people who self-harm do it to help them cope with overwhelming emotional pain. This could be caused by social problems, trauma or psychological reasons.

Social Problems:
  • Being bullied

  • Having problems at work or school

  • Having difficult relationships with friends or family

  • Coping with expectations

Trauma:
  • Physical or sexual abuse

  • Death of a close family member or friend

  • Having a miscarriage

Psychological causes:
  • Dissociating - losing touch with who they are and with their surroundings

  • Having repeated thoughts or voices telling them to self-harm

  • Borderline personality disorder (BPD)

about 17% of all people will self harm in their lifetime!
45% of people Self Harming are using cutting.
The average age of onset for self-injury is 13!

Q/A:

Why did you start cutting?

I first cut when I was like 8 or 9. I was frustrated and had heard about it from TV and pop culture. I thought it would be worth trying.

Why did you continue to cut?

I liked it and felt that it helped me vent my frustration and depression as I wasn't being medicated at the time. Also at my height of cutting I was caught smoking and doing other drugs and my parents decided to outpatient rehab. I couldn't see any of my friends or use so the only thing I felt I could do was cut.

How destructive of a habit do you believe it to be in comparison to other ones such as Porn, Nicotine, Other drugs, etc.?

Cutting is really hard to stop once you get used to it. It can obviously get you killed if you cut too deep or something bad but it isn't as bad as something like heroin because hard drugs effect everyone in your life while cutting is easy to hide and don't do any damage to other people.

When my parents first found out I was cutting I didn't understand why it was a bid deal because I had been doing it for so long. I never really understood how much it hurts people around you until I found out my girlfriend was doing it.

Once we talked about it we decided to stop together.

EFFORTPOST Tatbir, a Shia ritual all about self-harm

Tatbir, also known as Zanjeer Zani or Qama Zani, is a tradition by Shia Muslims where they would hit themselves with swords or whip themselves with chains or knife-whips until and sometimes even after they lacerate themselves deeply and sometimes get sword carvings into their scalp and skull in order to remember and feel the pain that the Shia Muslim prophet Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (Arabic: الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ), the grandson of Mohammed, felt during the battle of Karbala on October 10, 680 (Or, as according to the Muslim Hijri calendar, 10 Muharram, 61 AH). The battle resulted in the death of Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, many of Husayn's family members taken prisoner, and the start of the second fitna by the Umayyad Caliphate's army led by Yazid ibn Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan (Arabic: يزيد بن معاوية بن أبي سفيان).

This tradition isn't accepted in most of the Shia community, though the largest sector of Shia Islam (Twelver Shi'ism) practices it they don't always practice in the violent and bloody way as it's shown in many videos and pictures. It's actively contested by many Shia clerics, since self-harm is considered haram in Islam many modernist clerics deem the practice of tatbir as impermissible. But most religious authorities associate all forms of self-flagellation and blood-letting as ways to relate to painful deaths during the battle of Karbala by Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib and supporters. Many well known clerics including Ruhollah Khomeini and Abu al-Qasim al-Khoei state that it's permissible to practice tatbir, though a lot of clerics including Ali Khamenei and Naser Makarem Shirazi state that it is forbidden and unnecessary especially if it induces harm. Many Shias who celebrate and practice the tradition and don't want to cause immense harm to themselves instead beat on their chests or hit their heads with their bare hands instead of using swords or whips on themselves. Though some don't even recommend beating oneself and instead people like Iraqi sociologist Ibrahim al-Haidari and the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, called for the abandonment of how Tatbir is practiced and called for it to be replaced with Shias making blood donations. Many went along with this sentiment, an example would be how a man named Mohammad Mehdi Shamseddine established a blood bank in Najaf, Iraq to donate blood on Ashura day to patients who need it in replacement with regular Tatbir.

The tradition is always celebrated on October 10th, or 10 Muharram depending if you're using the Hijri calendar, and on the 40th day after Ashura which is known as Arba'een (Arabic: الأربعين), or in Persian as Chehelom (Persian: چهالم), which both literally translate to fortieth.

The tradition is celebrated and practiced all around the Middle East including Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Iraq, Kuwait, Iran, Afghanistan (Though it has either remained underground or no one practices anymore due to the Taliban), Pakistan, and India. Iraq is the main country in the Middle East to have the largest congregation of people celebrating Tatbir almost every year. The tradition has moved into western countries as well, with Shias in western countries including the United States, United Kingdom, France and Germany. Though in the western countries many practice the harmful part in mosques or private residences, some do it in public or publicly yet secluded areas.

This one was easily one of the most painful cuts i've done. healing was a huge pain too, inconvenient spot so the bandages kept sliding. during the early stages of scar healing, when i would get cold, these would tighten and if i bent to the side it would be so tight..not so much the case anymore thankfully

I'm aware that these aren't perfect, i never expected them to be. It's hard to do on yourself without proper tools and skill.

These were for art purposes, not self harm. It is in the self harm category bc it fits best here.

EFFORTPOST Anorexia Nervosa (Info + Image Dump at End)

ANOREXIA NERVOSA: A KILLER

What is Anorexia? In order to understand anorexia, we have to understand what an eating disorder is. An eating disorder is usually a behavior condition in which there is a severe and persistent disturbance in normal eating behaviors, and usually associated with distressing thoughts and emotions. Anorexia falls under the class of an eating disorder, and is generally characterized by the loss or denial of appetite and food. Some other types of eating disorders include: bulimia, consisting of binge eating and then either throwing up or starving to get rid of the calories, and binge eating disorder, in which people usually tend to eat large amounts of food in short periods, commonly when stressed, and feel like they can't stop. People with anorexia will usually struggle with an intense fear of weight gain, an unhealthy and low weight, extreme restrictions when it comes to food, obsession with food and calories, and distorted perception of their weight (usually consisting of false beliefs that they are above the weight that they actually are).

How to spot anorexia: Those who suffer with anorexia usually have very restrictive eating patterns, and these often tend to include: eating in private and never around others, refusing to eat meals with others, repeatedly checking their weight, talking about their weight and generally obsessing over it. They may also loose a large amount of weight rather quickly, obsess with excessive and have a strict work out routine, and refuse to eat certain foods like meat, dairy, or sugary foods. Anorexics may also have repetitive food behaviors, like mashing food, chewing way too much, or just moving the food around the plate rather than eating it. They may also tend to drink large amounts of water, right before meals in an attempt to feel too full to eat*.

What effects does anorexia have on the body? Anorexia has many effects on the human body, as the nutrients from foods are vital to it for everything. Some effects are short term, and some are long term. The short term effects of anorexia can begin the first time you decide to starve, and when regular restriction starts, the body has no choice but the adjust, even going as far as to go into ‘starvation mode' if it has to. This means that since no nutrients are being provided to the body, they have to be taken from elsewhere within it. This often includes breaking down muscle mass or pulling the nutrients from the bodies bones. To help this change to the body, the brain releases hormones that over long periods could negatively affect the bodies overall health. After a long exposure, the effects of anorexia can became chronic and fatal. Some short term effects of anorexia include:

    1. Weight loss: the most visible and common sign to those who have anorexia. In order for people to fit the criteria to be diagnosed with anorexia, they must have a body weight of 85% or less than the normal person of their stature. The drastic weight loss comes from the restriction of vital nutrients for the body and the taking of the nutrients from elsewhere.
    1. Hair loss: hair is made of primary proteins, and protein is used by the body for many of its regular functions. When in starvation mode, the body must redirect nutrients to more important parts of the body, meaning that the hair is no longer receiving these nutrients.
    1. Loss of periods: the endocrine system is usually thrown into chaos during the body going into starvation, and due to the inadequate function of this system, periods are usually completely lost for those with anorexia, making reproduction hard.
    1. Anemia: when starving, your body already lacks most vital nutrients from food. One of these important nutrients we need is iron, which many with anorexia don't have enough of. This lack of iron can lead to weakness, fatigue, and irregular heartbeat. Those with anorexia may bruise easier than others, and take even longer to heal than a healthy person. Nearly 17% of all anorexics suffer with anemia as well.

The long term effects of anorexia can be deadly. Usually the longer a person suffers from anorexia, the more damage is done to the body and the longer the healing process becomes. Some longer term effects of those suffering with anorexia can include:

    1. Heart damage: due to anorexia affecting almost every muscle in the human body, it's unsurprising the heart is also affected. Without the proper nutrients for the body, the heart becomes more vulnerable to heart failure, disease, and arrhythmia. Due to the lack of nutrients, the heart is forced to work harder, which can cause tears and lead to cardiac arrest.
    1. Blood pressure issues: since the heart is unable to beat as it should, topped with malnutrition, low blood pressure may become an issue for those with anorexia.
    1. neurological problems: the bodies nervous system, of course, relies on the vital nutrients from foods, which the act of starving affects negatively. This can often cause nerve pain, muscle weakness, headaches, fainting, seizures, and movement issues for those with anorexia.

while most issues associated with anorexia are reversible with proper care, in severe cases, transition should be done under guidance of a professional.

What causes anorexia? Anorexia is usually caused by underlying triggers or possible genetic components. People who have experienced trauma in their lives, especially in childhood, are more at risk of developing anorexia in their lifetimes. Social causes also contribute to the development of anorexia when people feel like a failure to fit into today's society and beauty standards. Peer pressure and social media are big contributors to unrealistic body goals and beauty standards for the population, especially the younger ones. Other factors can often include those who tend to have a perfectionist personality, low self esteem, or jobs and hobbies centered around the important of weight, like modeling*.

EATING DISORDER STATISTICS:

  • 9% of Americans will have an eating disorder in their life

  • Every 52 minutes, one dies from direct consequences of anorexia

  • 22% of the population worldwide showed disordered eating

  • Eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate, behind opiate addiction

  • Less than 6% of people with eating disorders are considered medically underweight

  • 15% of woman will have an eating disorder by age 40 and only 27% will receive any help

  • People with eating disorders are 11 times more likely to attempt suicide

  • 70% of those with eating disorders have other issues, commonly anxiety

  • By age 14, 60-70% of females are trying to lose weight

  • Men make up 25% of those with eating disorders

  • Only 20% of adults with eating disorders ever seek help

EFFORTPOST TW ! Eating Disorder Information Post ! (Main Three)

So what is an Eating Disorder?:

Eating disorders are serious mental and physical illnesses that involve complex and damaging relationships with food, eating, exercise, and body image. These disorders impact approximately 20 million women and 10 million men in the United States and are found in all populations regardless of age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, religion, sex, gender, etc.

What are the different types of Eating Disorder's?:

  • Anorexia Nervosa

For Anorexia Nervosa to be diagnosed, the DSM-5 specifies that the individual must engage in persistent energy intake restriction, have an intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, or be engaging in a persistent behavior that interferes with weight gain, and the individual has a disturbance in their own perception of their body weight or shape. These individuals often present with a bodyweight that is “below a minimally normal level for age, sex, developmental trajectory, and physical health,” but this is not always the case. You cannot determine if someone struggles with anorexia based on their body appearance alone.

Criteria:

Restriction of energy intake relative to requirements, leading to significantly low body weight in the context of age, sex, developmental trajectory, and physical health,

Intense fear of gaining weight or of becoming fat, or persistent behavior that interferes with weight gain, even though at a significantly low weight,

Disturbance in the way in which one's body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, or persistent lack of recognition of the seriousness of the current low body weight

  • Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa is characterized by three essential features: “recurrent episodes of binge eating, recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviors to prevent weight gain, and self-evaluation that is unduly influenced by body shape and weight. An individual must engage in these behaviors at least once per week for three months to meet the criteria for diagnosis. Referring to the first feature, a binge is characterized by an individual “eating, in a discrete period of time, an amount of food that is definitely larger than what most individuals would eat in a similar period of time under similar circumstances” and that the individuals feel “a sense of lack of control over eating during the episode.

Criteria:

Recurrent episodes of binge eating, which are characterized by BOTH of the following; “Eating, in a discrete period of time (e.g. within any 2-hour period), an amount of food that is definitely larger than what most people would eat in a similar period of time under similar circumstances. A sense of lack of control over eating during the episode (e.g. a feeling that one cannot stop eating or control what or how much one is eating).

Recurrent, inappropriate compensatory behaviors in order to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting; misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or other medications; fasting; or excessive exercise.

The binge eating and inappropriate compensatory behaviors both occur, on average, at least once a week for 3 months.

Self-evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and weight.

The disturbance does not occur exclusively during episodes of anorexia nervosa

--

Images of people that suffer with either Anorexia or Bulimia are usually similar. The main way to tell is by their faces.

Photo of Woman with ANA: https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/1693883485521223.webp

Photo of Woman with BMA: https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/16938834862705364.webp

Main difference are their cheeks. People who suffer with ANA usually have smile lines and their cheeks are sucked in giving them a skeleton look. While people who suffer with BMA usually have chubby cheeks due to the enlargement of salivary glands.

  • Binge Eating Disorder (BED)

Binge Eating Disorder, commonly referred to as BED is the most common eating disorder diagnosis among all others. The DSM-5 specifies that BED involves binge eating episodes defined as mentioned above in the Bulimia Nervosa diagnosis. BED differs from Bulimia Nervosa in that BED involves no recurrent use of inappropriate behaviors to compensate for binge episodes and does not occur exclusively during anorexia or bulimia episodes. BED also does not include an individual's perception of body shape and weight in diagnostic criteria.

Criteria:

  • Recurrent episodes of binge eating, which are characterized by BOTH of the following: “Eating, in a discrete period of time (e.g. within any 2-hour period), an amount of food that is definitely larger than what most people would eat in a similar period of time under similar circumstances. A sense of lack of control over eating during the episode (e.g. a feeling that one cannot stop eating or control what or how much one is eating).

  • The binge-eating episodes are associated with three (or more) of the following:

-Eating much more rapidly than normal.

-Eating until feeling uncomfortably full.

-Eating large amounts of food when not feeling physically hungry.

-Eating alone because of feeling embarrassed by how much one is eating.

-Feeling disgusted with oneself, depressed, or very guilty afterward.

  • Marked distress regarding binge eating is present

  • The binge eating occurs, on average, at least once a week for 3 months.

  • The binge eating is not associated with the recurrent use of inappropriate compensatory behavior as in bulimia nervosa and does not occur exclusively during the course of bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia Nervosa & Bulimia Nervosa

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/16938834930672016.webp

A 22-year-old woman who had suffered from anorexia for 10 years and had collapsed several times was admitted to a psychiatric clinic but died 2 days later.

At autopsy, the body of the woman had an extremely emaciated physique and weighed 22.6 kg (49.8 lbs) with a body length of 165 cm (5′ 4.9′′) and a body mass index (BMI) of 8.3 or very severely underweight.

No fatty tissue could be seen. Internal organs were small and appeared child-like. Excess accumulation of fluid (edema) in the brain. Dry body tissues. Urine alcohol concentration 0.04 ‰. Femoral blood: 20 ng / ml diphenhydramine, 0.00 ‰ BAK; 31.7 mmol / L (normal 29-42) HbA1c; 6.1 mg / l acetone; 23 μmol / L acetoacetate; 225 μmol / L β-hydroxybutyrate. The amount of diphenhydramine found in the femoral blood sample is in the therapeutic range.

Binge Eating Disorder

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/16938834934521728.webp

28-74% of risk for eating disorders is through genetic heritability.

Eating disorders are among the deadliest mental illnesses, second only to opioid overdose.

10,200 deaths each year are the direct result of an eating disorder—that's one death every 52 minutes.

About 26% of people with eating disorders attempt suicide.

30% of people dealing with eating disorders have experienced sexual abuse.

None of these disorder's should be made fun of, they are the same as any other mental illness.

If you know someone with an Eating Disorder, talk to them, don't make fun of them.
