She could have already wanted to kill herself, having those thoughts and such. Thats probably why she became an addict
in the first 
place, most people dont just think 
of suicide 
once and then immediately kill themselves. If she was already emotionally vulnerable in the first 
place, her brother 
telling her parents about her addiction was just the icing on top and it finally triggered 
her. Most people dont just become an addict 
for fun, stuff happens in their life. She was vulnerable mentally 
and she felt the only way to get out of the hole she dug herself into was to kill herself.

I think the brother just wanted to help her, telling the parents so she can have the help she needs. Sadly she couldn't handle that her parents would judge her like that. I think the brother made kinda the right decision, but he should have like tried to convince the sister to get help by herself or convince her to tell the parents herself. The brother probably saw that those didnt work, and than told the parents

I think the brother wanted to help, but the stress of the possibility that the parents might judge her, just added to the suicidal toughts she might have already had (and as you said, could have caused the addiction)
