It can be pretty shitty if you're poor that's for sure. But middle class, especially lower middle class, has it a lot better than the average north american I'd say since probably 2010 or so. If you don't live in the center of Moscow or Peter and have a decent wage you have a lot more leftover money after paying rent. I know I'm places like Vancouver and Toronto in Canada a one bedroom apartment in an old building is around 2000$ right now. Many states where it's not Virginia or Mississippi or some redneck place it's also very expensive for the average person, not to mention poor people. Also, if you're rich in Russia it's a lot better than being rich in north America if you ask me, as somebody who comes from a wealthy Russian family. We get pulled over we just pay the cop a 20$ and we're gtg. If somebody is messing with you you can have the cops press them and rough them up. It's a double edged sword because it can just as easily happen to you, of course. But yeah just as a medium wage worker in some small Russian city they're no worse off than somebody living in a random city that's not a major hub in the states. There's also no tent cities in Russia which are popping up everywhere in the states and Canada. Better social support in north america overall but people seem to be super lazy or use drugs a lot in the states instead of taking advantage of opportunities that poor Russian people never have.
