Today we are covering car crashes, these are some of the leading causes of car crashes:

• speeding

• distracted driving (on phone, looking for something, doing makeup)

• DUI or driving when tired/mentally impaired

• road conditions and weather

• reckless driving

• tailgating and bumper-to-bumper traffic

• failure to check blind spots

• inexperienced drivers (teens)

Statistically speaking, among any other age group, teens aged 16-19 are at higher risk for crashing and are 3x more likely to get into a fatal crash [1]

Driving Under the Influence

Javier Caldera (driver that caused the accident) slammed into Janet Genao's nissan at over a 100mph, Genao was pronounced dead at the scene and a few other drivers were injured. Caldera was sentenced and is currently serving time for second degree murder

Driving under the influence includes "A first-offense DUI or DWI is classified as a misdemeanor and punishable by no more than six months or a year in jail"[4]. An alcohol DUI is classified as observed visual impairments or unlawful blood alcohol or breath alcohol level of .08 or above. DUI cases are mostly settled with fines ranging from $500-$2000, varying from state to state. "Fines for subsequent offenses and DUI's involving aggravating factors can go well up into the thousands" [4].

Driving under the influence includes the intoxication from:

• alcoholic beverages

• chemical substances (drugs)

• controlled substances (prescription drugs)

DWI vs DUI

In some states, a DWI and DUI are considered the same thing, but in others, it could mean separate things. The main difference between them is the level of intoxication. DWI's have more serious charges than DUI's. You are more likely to be charged with a DWI if your BAC is 0.08 or higher, in some states they may lessen your charge to a DUI if your BAC is 0.07 or lower. Unfortunately, it's hard to find a definitive difference as it varies from state to state. In states that don't use DWI, the standard maximum BAC is 0.08.

Terms:

DWI: driving while intoxicated

DUI: driving under the influence/impaired

BAC: blood alcohol content/breath alcohol content

Subsequent offenses: being charged with a crime and has been previously convicted of the same or similar crime, one or more times

According to ABC&: Two people are dead, and one person is in critical condition after a white Chrysler struck a parked oil tank in the Bronx Sunday morning, police say. The two victims of the fatal crash were a 21 and a 15yr old. The 21yr old male was pronounced dead on the scene, and the 15yr old female was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. The crash happened a little after 3 a.m. at Bryant Avenue and Viele Avenue at the Hunts Point section of the Bronx Sunday. A third passenger, a 17yr old female, is in the hospital in critical condition. The 23yr old male driver is also hospitalized but in stable condition.

Reckless driving is considered a misdemeanor criminal offense with fines from $50-$1000 and jail time of up to 90 days to a year. Driving with a suspended or revoked license is deemed as a 2nd-degree misdemeanor but can quickly turn into a felony if fatalities are involved. If you fatally kill someone in a reckless driving accident, this is considered a Class 6 felony and carries jail time of up to 12 months to 5 years, with fines not to exceed $2500.

Street racing is a serious offense even if no deaths are involved if someone is injured by a street/drag race incident, that is a Class 6 felony and is punishable by up to 12 months to 5 years. Now, if a victim dies due to a street/drag race, this is a separate felony offense that is punishable with a mandatory 1-year sentence but can go up to 20 years.

Porsche Girl; Nicole "Nikki" Catsouras

On Halloween 2006, 18yr old Nicole Catsouras argued with her father, Christos Catsouras, because she was smoking which was forbidden in their house. Her dad ended up confiscating her car keys, but being a her rebellious teen self, Nikki Catsouras stole the keys to his Porsche 911 Carrera and took it on a high-speed joyride, hitting speeds over 100 miles per hour. She glanced off at a Honda that was traveling down the same highway at 70 mph, nearly killing its occupants. That was enough to make her lose control. She left the road at an insane speed and collided with a concrete toll booth where she was killed instantly

CHP Officers Aaron Reich and Thomas O'Donnell released the photos of Nikki which would later go viral labeling her as "Porsche Girl". Her parents were relentlessly harassed after what happened with people making fun of and taunting Nikki and the situation and repeatedly sending them photos of the scene.

Pleading not guilty to all charges, "Mecham has remained in Inverness Jail in Northeast Portland since the June 10 incident on 38 charges, including felonies for attempted assault, multiple counts of unlawful use of a weapon, attempted assault on a police officer and attempting to elude law enforcement by vehicle, according to charges obtained by Fox News Digital from the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office."[9]

When experiencing a speed/death wobble,

"Keep a firm hold on the handle grips without locking your arms or fighting the steering. Gently ease off of the throttle. Do not apply the brakes, and do not accelerate. In some cases, it helps to shift your weight forward by leaning over the tank. Be sure to get the cause of the problem corrected." [6]
