This is a Cirrus SR22, an SR20 with an upgraded powerplant.

It crashed due to pilot error with them doing a low-speed high angle banking turn which basically stops all lift being generated from the wings, turning really any commercial plane into a metal coffin.

At higher altitudes, the same manoeuvre would've sent the plane into a flatspin where the accident could've easily been avoided because of the SR22 having CAPS (Cirrus Airframe Parachute System), this is what you see being deployed at the 4-second mark.

Fun little fact, the SR22 has been the world's best-selling general aviation aircraft since 2003.

You mean that wasn't an ejection seat?

It was not.

Ejection seats are rarely if ever fitted to civilian aircraft for a large multitude of reasons, some that I can think of off the top of my head being;

  • Civilian aircraft generally don't experience rapid disintegration via missiles so there is no need to quickly save the pilot with a seat ejection as the plane burns up

  • The layout of civilian aircraft is similar to cars so the other people on board will be cooked from the ejection seat rocket motor unless each seat is compartmentalized

  • Expensive as fuck lol

  • Civilian aircraft are far lighter than military aircraft so using parachutes to not only save the occupants but the entire airframe too is a no brainer, for example, the aforementioned SR22 is only around 1700kg fully loaded while something like the Eurofighter Typhoon is over 11,000kg before even taking into account of combat loading it with missiles, ammunition and fuel

Ejection seats are also very complicated and expensive to maintain in the military aircraft they're installed in. So much so that when folks with a ton of money buy a military surplus jet trainer for personal use, the ejection seats are deactivated.

That said, there's tons of people flying these Cirrus models thinking that the airframe parachute system is a "get out of crash free" card and that's just not the case. In many reports I've read it's people with more dollars than sense that can afford to buy them and end up killing themselves and sometimes their family members as well.

Here's an example of that right here - wealthy guy student pilot kills himself and his son: https://www.kathrynsreport.com/2019/08/loss-of-control-in-flight-cirrus-sr22.html

And here's a cirrus landing without it's parachute: https://www.khou.com/video/news/raw-video/warning-graphic-video-of-plane-crash/285-2219277
