I think he was just going fast enough to where he couldn't stop in time, and how would you expect a truck like this to blatantly disregard traffic and make an illegal u-turn?

by being defensive driver; slow down when the opposite lane is slowing as if going to do a u-turn.
there are always driver who dont follow the road rule. most accident are caused by stupid driver. and sometimes innocent people are just a collateral

And you can see multiple trucks doing U-turns there at same spot where buddy cut him off - unless it was his first time on this street he'd have likely seen trucks do this tons of times. Unprepared this time and unlucky too, the poor devil. RIP cyclist dude.

Yup, you're right. That's why they teach you to drive carefully, but also expect other people to do stupid ass things like this. Us bikers have a saying "pretend you're invisible" but that also applies to cars too.
