This post is nice and descriptive. Any more descriptive and would have just puked on my keyboard the delicious HAGGIS I have been eating. It is a savory pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver, and lungs) and cooked while encased in the animal's stomach. Since I was not feeling too fancy today, I topped it with some recently unearthed fermented fish sauce (Surströmming). The sauce actually tastes quite tame considering that it was buried by a Swede in the 16th century and it was found laying in the sun after the permafrost melted

Ever had Hákarl?

Hákarl

One has to wonder how much it ferments given Iceland's weather. I was only aware of the similar let-it-hang dish-prepping model that is used in Scandinavia. Seems like a good way to ruin tasty fresh fish but I am sure there are historic reasons.

That doesn't even look too appetizing in google photos. Reminds me of whale blubber left in the beach to rot. Also, I had some regular shark in south-east Asia and was not too positively impressed

It’s left to rot because it neutralizes the uric acid in the Greenland shark, which is poisonous to consume. Burying and drying it makes it edible. It’s fucking foul, man. Absolutely fucking foul lol. Tastes like you’re doing a line of fishy ammonia with the consistency of a rubber spring. I opened a small thingy of it at a supermarket one time, and everybody cleared out, and I’m not kidding haha.

Lovely. Sounds like what most videos on WPD would smell like

While reading that, the first thing that came to my head was when I smelled one of those flowers that smell like rotten meat. Like being punched on the lungs

Something just made sense on my head. Earlier today I was watching/listening to the Icelandic Skalmod + Icelandic Symphonic Orchestra and it is OTHERWORLDLY. Probably the product of someone eating some of that not-too rotten shark. Shills down my spine for most of an hour

Hahaha I directed the video for that (both times they played with the symphony)! And I did the music video for their song “Gleipnir”, which won Best Video of The Year - those guys are my bro’s!

I directed the video for that

That is some coincidence. I don't have much to say other than I love your work in the around ~2013 video+audio. It is the only case/disk on my bookshelf. I know it cost me around 50€ more than PVP (had to ship from Germany to the corner of EU) but it is a prized possession for life so the value did not matter. More or less every year I have to watch it.

I am sucker for choirs so I loved those shots the most. Also that violinist woman in the front with the red-blue bangs is probably the most charismatic violinist I have ever seen.

EDIT: just to be clear I know a total of 1 words in icelandic. That word is Hákarl is taught me above

Man, that’s awesome to hear, thank you so much, I’m really flattered that you enjoy that dvd so much! What a small world! I’ve done videos for probably half the bands in Iceland - check out Sólstafir, they’re my boys, and one of my favorite bands, too. I just finished a new video for them where we went through about 150 liters of fake blood in about ten minutes lol, but if you want to hop on YouTube sometime and check out “Bláfjall”, “Fjara”, and “Lágnætti’, I wrote and directed all of those, so that’ll get you started. All my videos are on my website www.dontpaniciceland.com too, if you’re interested in getting more into Icelandic rock & roll! ♠️🤘🏻

Regular shark (fin I assume) is eaten for the springy noodly texture and doesnt have much of a taste of its own, and often is flavored with fancy broths. I personally enjoy it.

Ive had regular shark meat and "not much of a taste" are the last words I would use to describe it. But it also wasn't fin.
