Don't know what? That he could see his kid? His reaction just prior to the car hitting the child makes it painfully apparent that he could most definitely see the child, realized what was about to happen, but was too far away to do anything about it.
As for why he walked away from the child in the first place, no we don't know the reason. But seeing as parents play the strategy of pretending to leave all the time in order to get their rebelling child to follow them, I think it's a reasonable assumption that is what was happening here.
The father's only mistake is playing that strategy next to a damn road. That was a crazy thing to do.

It's interesting that intelligence doesn't seem to be selected for via natural selection. At least not anymore. Perhaps it was in the past because people needed more intelligence to survive long enough to reproduce. I wonder if it's modern conveniences that has removed selection for intelligence. Stupid people lack control over their sexual urges and modern conveniences decrease the likelihood of them dying stupidly before they can reproduce.

eh idk, i feel natural selection kind of survival shit doesn't have the same criteria as being smart in general. You can survive for a good damn while by just being able to defend yourself, get food, have shelter, etc. You don't have to be able to make advanced tech to just live. The modern world has for the most part just made it harder to die earlier on through medical science and other scientific endeavors. Natural selection is more about just avoiding dangers, strength and luck. Hell our ancestors from 10000+ years ago where really stupid compared to us. The literal definition of "i'm gonna fuck or kill if i want to".
