Morbid Curiosity and Sadistic Urges:
Humans have always had a mix of emotions, including sadistic, masochistic, and voyeuristic urges1.
These urges can lead people to seek out extreme content, including videos of death.
The curiosity about mortality and the macabre has been present throughout history.
Technology and Spectatorship:
Advances in technology have made it easier to access and share content related to death.
In the past, films like “Faces of Death” (a compilation of killings and autopsies) sparked interest in real-life horrors.
Shock sites like Rotten.com gained popularity in the early days of the internet, allowing people to view gruesome content.
The ubiquity of digital cameras and the internet further fueled the proliferation of such content.
Emotional Impact and Empathy:
Watching death videos can evoke strong emotions, including empathy for the victims.
Some argue that exposure to violence can lead to positive outcomes, such as advocating against injustice2.
However, it's essential to recognize that repeated exposure to violent or traumatic content can be harmful.
Psychological Effects:
Watching people die can have psychological consequences.
Some individuals may become desensitized, while others may experience distress or even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

On Sunday, April 28, 1996, at approximately 11:45 in Port Arthur, 28-year-old Martin Bryant from New Town, after finishing his meal on the terrace of the Boad Arrow cafe, went inside and started shooting at the guests. The bandit killed 20 people and when he concluded that everyone was dead, he calmly left the premises. Then he continued the series of killings, killing other victims. While leaving the historic district of the town, he killed Nanett Mikac and her two daughters (aged 3 and 6). The next victims were three passengers of a car that stopped at the ticket office of the entrance gate to the historic part of the city. Bryant stole a car, then forced the driver of another car to get into the trunk of the stolen car, and shot the woman with him. Approximately 14 he reached the Seascape Cottage and there he set fire to the vehicle he was driving. He took the man he had previously abducted and the owners of the guesthouse (an elderly couple) hostage. Since leaving the Boad Arrow Cafe, he has killed 12 people. More than 200 policemen surrounded the guesthouse. The bandit demanded a helicopter, but negotiations with him were interrupted at night. On Monday, April 29, around 8, the murderer set fire to the guesthouse with three hostages, then, suffering from burns, he left the building and was captured.
