An individual was rescued alive after being tortured by members of a criminal faction in the Newton Pereira neighborhood, in União dos Palmares, in the Zona da Mata of Alagoas.

According to police officers, the case came to light after a video was released on social media, showing the young man being tortured by criminals. In the images, the victim appears with his body wet with a flammable liquid and under constant threat from criminals. At one point in the video, one of the torturers holds a lighter, threatening to set the young man on fire.

After investigations, the police managed to identify the perpetrators of the crime and arrested some of them. During the interrogations, the faction's informant betrayed his companions involved in the torture, even mentioning the names of members of the rival faction.

This post regards the hanging execution of Herta Kašparová who, at the age of 23, became the last public execution to be performed in the country of Czechoslovakia.

The history of her story is long and fairly interesting. I'll recount a few pieces of it here and anyone who doesn't know of her and wants to dig deeper can do their own research online.

The gist of her story is that she was a Czech of German descent born in Třešť with an unpleasant childhood. She had a birth defect that caused her to limp, with one of her legs turned somewhat to the side. Due to this, as well as the fact that her family were considered 'strange' and outsiders to the area, she suffered a lot of bullying and abuse from her peers. Early on in the Nazi occupation, several other families targeted hers for various infractions, including robbing them and beating her father until his teeth were knocked out. Herta grew up with a hefty amount of resentment for many people in her home town.

Because Herta spoke and read fluent German, she aided the Gestapo with translations during the Nazi occupation, which did not improve her standing with the locals. Towards the end of the war, she somehow had positioned herself as being able to point the finger at various people for the Germans to arrest and execute. According to the testimony of many locals, she chose targets based on whether they had wronged her and her family, then blamed them for attacks and raids on the German occupiers. Because of her false testimony, as many as 33 Czechs were executed in the final month of WWII.

A year later, Herta was tried, sentenced, and executed by pole hanging for crimes against humanity. The court record indicated that she was confused by the verdict and the sentence, saying that she should not be killed for being a good citizen and seemingly disbelieving that the death sentence was real and could actually be enforced. In any case, her execution had generated a lot of attention because her story was widely passed around at that point. The local government sold tickets to the hanging and it was reported to have over 3000 spectators, including two local schools with all children lining up to watch.

Herta arrived at 8:30am clad in a cheerfully-colored dress and sandals, initially looking calm and happy. Her brother Alois (who came to watch and helped Herta to the gallows, but did not support her for her actions) stated that even after she arrived on the field, she believed her execution would be halted and did not think she would truly be killed. Once she had spoken to a priest, however, and she actually saw the gallows and was being marched towards them, by multiple accounts, she became terrified. Her knees buckled and she fell twice on the way to the gallows. Her brother had to help her to her feet. She was widely mocked by the crowd when she stumbled and fell, too terrified to walk to her death. It was recorded that she was openly weeping and could be heard whimpering in fear.

The gallows pole was made of a three-meter board with a width of 60 cm and a thickness of 5 cm. The basic protocol for pole hanging was as follows:

    1. The condemned is made to stand before a specialized vertical pole or pillar, approximately 3 metres (9.8 ft) in height.

    2. A rope is attached around the condemned's feet and routed through a pulley at the base of the pole.

    3.The condemned is hoisted to the top of the pole by means of a sling/belt running across the chest and under the armpits.

    4.A narrow-diameter noose is looped around the prisoner's neck, then secured to a hook mounted at the top of the pole.

    5.The chest sling is released, and the prisoner is pulled downward by the assistant executioners via the foot rope.

    6. The executioner stands on a stepped platform approximately 1.2 metres (3.9 ft) high beside the condemned. 

       Once the condemned was dropped, the executioner would place the heel of his hand beneath the prisoner's jaw to manually dislocate the condemned's neck by forcing the head to one side while the vertebrae were under   traction.

     

Because the time from Herta being dropped to the time when the executioner manually breaks her neck is not necessarily instantaneous, she likely strangled in the noose for a few moments before the executioner fully dislocated her neck. No witness statements committed to paper gave an indication as to how long that process took, but they were professionals so likely it was quick.

If you examine the photo where the executioner is cracking her neck compared to the one right after it, with the executioner and doctor checking her pulse, you can see that the bottom of the board and the dirt below her feet are wet and soiled in the second photo. She obviously lost control of her bladder while dying (especially common in hanging deaths) and pissed all down the board with her urine puddling in the dirt, but no sign of this is visible in the previous photo, so it is likely that she did not actually die until after he snapped her neck.

The photos show basically every stage of the execution, from her initial meeting with the priest on the field, all the way to the end when they place the box beneath her to move her body away. Many photographs were taken and, because she was so nationally reviled by all of Czechoslovakia, several were made into postcards and keepsakes sold to attendees or bought by people who did not make the show. Some citizens even posed for photos with her hanging corpse.

This is Juan Carlos Coronado, 33 years old, who was surprised by a robber who ended his life when he was talking to another person.

The case that shocks the people of Soledad was recorded in a video, which shows how the armed robber approach his victim with coldness and ruthless determination. Coronado, who ran a winery in the Chiquinquirá neighborhood, had been living under the constant threat of extortionists for some time.

The robber, without hesitation or showing the slightest sign of remorse, discharged his firearm at Coronado, leaving an incomprehensible tragedy in his wake. Subsequently, the aggressor fled quickly as a grillman on a motorcycle that was waiting for him a few meters from the scene of the crime.

The link between extortion and this heinous act of crime cannot be overlooked. Local authorities are carrying out a thorough investigation to clarify the motives behind this cruel murder and to identify those responsible.

Meanwhile, the community of the El Parque de Soledad urbanization and its surroundings are dismayed by the loss of Juan Carlos Coronado.

They demand justice and strong action against the violence and extortion that has claimed the life of a valued member of the community.
