EFFORTPOST The victims of the ‘Ken And Barbie Killers'

About Karla:

Karla Leanne Homolka, also known by the names Karla Leanne Teale and Leanne Bordelais, was born on May 4, 1970, in Port Credit, Ontario, Canada. She gained international notoriety after being convicted as a serial killer. Her crimes involved the 1991 and 1992 rape-murders of two Ontario teenage girls, Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French, as well as the rape and death of her own sister Tammy.

In 1993, Homolka and her partner in crime, Paul Bernardo (who was also her husband), were apprehended. Bernardo was subsequently convicted of the murders of the two teenagers in 1995 and received the harshest penalty under Canadian law, a life sentence along with the designation of a dangerous offender.

During the 1993 investigation, Homolka initially claimed that she had been coerced and abused by Bernardo, asserting that she was an unwilling accomplice in the murders. This led to a plea bargain with prosecutors, resulting in a reduced prison sentence of 12 years in exchange for a guilty plea to manslaughter.

However, later evidence in the form of videotapes revealed Homolka's more active involvement than she had initially admitted. This revelation led to widespread public condemnation of the plea deal, earning it the moniker "Deal with the Devil" in the Canadian media. This controversy persisted even after her high-profile release from prison in 2005.

Following her release, Homolka relocated to the province of Quebec, where she got married and had a son. In 2007, Canadian media reported that she had left Canada for the Antilles with her husband and child, assuming the name Leanne Teale. In 2012, journalist Paula Todd discovered Homolka living in Guadeloupe under the name Leanne Bordelais, with her husband and their three children.

Murder Victims::marseydead::marseybeheading:

Tammy Homolka:

By 1990, Bernardo was spending large amounts of time with the Homolka family, who liked him. He was engaged to the eldest daughter and flirted constantly with the youngest one. He had not told them that he had lost his job as an accountant, and instead was smuggling cigarettes across the nearby US–Canadian border. He had become obsessed with Tammy Homolka, peeping into her window and entering her room to masturbate while she slept. Karla Homolka helped him by breaking the blinds in her sister's window to allow Bernardo access. In July, Bernardo took Tammy across the border to get beer for a party. While there, Bernardo later told his fiancee, "they got drunk and began making out."

According to Bernardo's testimony at his trial, on July 24, 1990, Karla Homolka laced spaghetti sauce with crushed Valium she had stolen from her employer, Martindale Animal Clinic. She served dinner to her sister, who soon lost consciousness. Bernardo began to rape Tammy while Karla watched.

Over the summer, he supplied Tammy and her friends with gifts, food, and sodas that had "a film and a few white flecks on the top."

Six months before their 1991 wedding, Karla Homolka stole the anaesthetic agent Halothane from the clinic. On December 23, 1990, Homolka and Bernardo administered sleeping pills to the 15-year-old in a rum-and-eggnog cocktail. After Tammy was unconscious, Homolka and Bernardo undressed her and Karla applied a Halothane soaked cloth to her sister's nose and mouth.

Karla Homolka wanted to "give Tammy's virginity to Bernardo for Christmas" as, according to Homolka, Bernardo was disappointed by not having been Karla's first sex partner. With Tammy's parents sleeping upstairs, the pair videotaped themselves as they raped her in the basement. Tammy began to vomit. The pair tried to revive her, then called 911, but not before they hid evidence, dressed Tammy, and moved her into her basement bedroom. A few hours later Tammy Homolka was pronounced dead at St. Catharines General Hospital without having regained consciousness.

Despite the pair's behaviour – vacuuming and washing laundry in the middle of the night, and despite the presence of a chemical burn on Tammy's face, Niagara Regional Coroner and the Homolka family accepted the pair's version of events. The official cause of Tammy Homolka's death was accidental – choking on her vomit after consumption of alcohol. The pair subsequently videotaped themselves with Karla wearing Tammy's clothing and pretending to be her. They also moved out of the Homolka house to a rented Port Dalhousie bungalow, to let her parents cope with their grief.

Leslie Mahaffy:

Early in the morning on June 15, 1991, Bernardo took a detour through Burlington, halfway between Toronto and St. Catharines, to steal license plates. He found Leslie Mahaffy. The 14-year-old had missed her curfew after attending a funeral, was locked out of her house and had been unable to find anyone with whom she could stay overnight. It was then that Bernado left his car and eyed up his victim.

Bernardo approached her and told her he was looking to break into a neighbour's house. Unfazed, she asked if he had any cigarettes. As Bernardo led her to his car he blindfolded her, forced her into the vehicle and drove her to Port Dalhousie, where he informed Homolka that they had a playmate. Bernardo and Homolka subsequently videotaped themselves torturing and sexually abusing Mahaffy, all while listening to Bob Marley and David Bowie. At one point, Bernardo said "You're doing a good job, Leslie, a damned good job." Then he added, "The next two hours are going to determine what I do to you. Right now, you're scoring perfect." On another segment of tape, played at Bernardo's trial, the assault escalated. Mahaffy cried out in pain and begged Bernardo to stop. In the Crown description of the scene, he was sodomizing her while her hands were bound with twine. Later Mahaffy told Bernardo that her blindfold seemed to be slipping, an ominous development as it signaled the possibility that she might be able to identify both her tormentors if permitted to live.

The following day, Bernardo claimed, Homolka fed her a lethal dose of Halcion. Homolka claimed that, instead, Bernardo strangled her. The pair put her body in their basement.

The following day the Homolka family had dinner at the house.

After the Homolkas and their remaining daughter, Lori, had left, Bernardo and Homolka decided the best way to dispose of the evidence would be to dismember Leslie Mahaffy and encase each piece in cement. Bernardo bought a dozen bags of cement at a hardware store the following day. He kept the receipts which would prove damaging at his trial. Bernardo used his grandfather's circular saw to cut the body. Bernardo and Homolka then made numerous trips to dump the cement blocks in Lake Gibson, 18 kilometers south of Port Dalhousie. At least one of the blocks weighed 90 kg (200 pounds) and proved beyond the pair's patience or abilities to sink. It rested near the shore, where a father and son on a fishing expedition discovered it on June 29, 1991. Leslie Mahaffy's orthodontic appliance proved instrumental in identifying her.

Kristen French:

On the afternoon of April 16, 1992, Bernardo and Homolka were driving through St. Catharines to look for potential victims. It was after school hours on the day before Good Friday. Students were still going home but by and large the streets were empty. As they passed Holy Cross Secondary School, a main Catholic high school in the city's north end, they spotted Kristen French, a 15-year-old student, walking briskly to her nearby home. The couple pulled into the parking lot of nearby Grace Lutheran Church and Homolka got out of the car, map in hand, pretending to need assistance.

As French looked at the map, Bernardo attacked from behind, brandishing a knife and forcing her into the front seat of their car. From her back seat, Homolka controlled the girl by pulling down her hair.

French took the same route home every day, taking about 15 minutes to get home in order to attend to her dog's needs. Soon after she should have arrived, her parents became convinced that she had met with foul play and notified police. Within 24 hours, Niagara Regional Police (NRP) had assembled a team and searched the area along her route and found several witnesses who had seen the abduction from different locations, thus giving police a fairly clear picture. In addition, one of Kristen's shoes, recovered from the parking lot, underscored the seriousness of the abduction.

Over the three days of Easter weekend, Bernardo and Homolka videotaped themselves as they tortured, raped and sodomized Kristen French, forcing her to drink large amounts of alcohol and to behave submissively to Bernardo. At Bernardo's trial, Crown prosecutor Ray Houlahan said that Bernardo always intended to kill her because she was never blindfolded and was capable of identifying her captors.

While Bernardo was out buying pizza on April 18 he was spotted by Kerry Patrich, whom he had stalked the previous month. Her report to NRP was mishandled by police, as noted by Judge Archie Campbell in his 1995 inquiry into the police investigation of Bernardo's crimes, thus negating any chance of Kristen French's being discovered at the Bernardo house.

The following day, the couple murdered French before going to the Homolkas' for Easter dinner. Homolka testified at her trial that Bernardo had strangled French for exactly seven minutes while she watched. Bernardo said Homolka beat her with a rubber mallet because she had tried to escape and that French ended up being strangled on a noose tied around her neck secured to a hope chest. Immediately thereafter, Homolka went to fix her hair.

French's nude body was found in a ditch on April 30, 1992 in Burlington, approximately 45 minutes from St. Catharines, and a short distance from the cemetery where Leslie Mahaffy is buried. She had been washed and her hair had been cut off. It was originally thought that the hair was removed as a trophy, but Homolka testified that the hair had been cut to impede identification.

Paul Bernardo's Serial Rape TimeLine:

--

Bernardo committed multiple sexual assaults, escalating in viciousness, in and around Scarborough, Ontario. Most of the assaults were on young women whom he had stalked after they exited buses late in the evening.

  • May 4, 1987, Bernardo committed his first rape in Scarborough against a 21-year-old woman, in front of her parents' house, after following her home. The attack lasted more than half an hour.

  • May 14, 1987, Bernardo committed his second rape. He attacked a 19-year-old woman in the back yard of her parents' house. This incident lasted over an hour.

  • July 27, 1987, Bernardo attempted his third rape. Although he beat the young woman, he abandoned the attack after she fought back.

  • December 16, 1987, Bernardo committed his third rape, against a 15-year-old girl. This rape lasted about one hour. The following day, the Toronto Police Service issued a warning to women in Scarborough travelling alone at night, especially those taking buses.

  • December 23, 1987, Bernardo committed his fourth rape. During this attack, Bernardo raped the 17-year-old with the knife he used to threaten his victims. It was at this point he began to be referred to as the 'Scarborough Rapist'.

  • April 18, 1988, Bernardo attacked a 17-year-old. The fifth assault, this one lasted 45 minutes.

  • May 25, 1988, Bernardo was nearly caught by a uniformed Metro Toronto investigator staking out a bus shelter. The investigator noticed him hiding under a tree and pursued him on foot, but Bernardo escaped.

  • May 30, 1988, Bernardo committed his sixth rape, this time in Clarkson, about 25 miles southwest of Scarborough. This attack, against an 18-year-old, lasted 30 minutes.

  • October 4, 1988, Bernardo attempted a seventh Scarborough rape. His intended victim fought him off but he inflicted two stab wounds to her thigh and buttock which required 12 stitches.

  • November 16, 1988, Bernardo committed his seventh rape against an 18-year-old in the backyard of her parents' house.

  • November 17, 1988, Metro Police formed a special task force dedicated to capturing the Scarborough Rapist.

  • December 27, 1988, an alerted neighbor chased Bernardo off after he had begun his attempted eighth rape.

  • June 20, 1989, Bernardo attempted to rape another young woman. She fought against him and her screams alerted neighbors. Bernardo fled with scratches on his face.

  • August 15, 1989, Bernardo committed his eighth rape, against a 22-year-old woman. He had stalked her the previous night from outside the window of her apartment and waited for her to arrive home. This particularly vicious attack lasted two hours.

  • November 21, 1989, Bernardo committed his ninth rape, against a 15-year-old whom he saw in a bus shelter. This attack lasted 45 minutes.

  • December 22, 1989, Bernardo committed his tenth rape, against a 19-year-old. This attack occurred in a stairwell of an underground parking lot and lasted 30 minutes.

  • May 26, 1990, Bernardo committed his eleventh rape. This rape lasted over an hour. However, his 19-year-old victim's vivid recollection of her attacker permitted police to make a computer composite photograph, which was released two days later by police and published in Toronto and area newspapers.

  • July 1990, two months after receiving tips that Bernardo fit the Scarborough Rapist composite, he was interviewed by two police detectives.

Transcripts from Bernardo and Homolka's home movies - this part is discussing the murder of Karla's sister, Tammy:

...a seemingly relaxed Homolka pulling down her husband's pants, fondling his penis, which she called Snuggles, and then performing fellatio during most of the tape, stopping every now and then to talk about what had happened to her dead sister.

"I loved it when you fucked my little sister," Homolka said to Bernardo, who was lying on his back beside the roaring hearth, moaning softly while she rubbed his penis.

"I loved it when you fucked Tammy. I loved it when you took her virginity. You're the king. I love licking your ass, Paul. I'll bet Tammy would have loved to lick your ass. I loved it when you put Snuggles up her ass."

Bernardo could be seen reaching for his drink while Homolka continued to fondle his penis. She did it for several minutes, but he never climaxed. He took a sip from his drink, glancing at the back of her head while she worked on him, and asked about her thoughts on the night Tammy died. "How did you feel?"

"I felt proud. I felt happy," she replied.

"What else?"

"I felt horny. It's my mission in life to make you feel good."

"This is why I'm gonna marry her," Bernardo said, looking at the camera and holding up his drink while Homolka continued performing fellatio. "......... to the king."

"I'm glad you made me lick her cunt," Homolka continued, after pausing to take a break from the oral sex.

"Are you a fully fledged ****?" Bernardo asked, a reference to Homolka having sex with her sister.

"No, I'm not."

"You were having sex with your little sister."

"That was different. It was my little sister," she replied, stroking his penis.

"Love in the family," Bernardo said. "Do you believe in that concept?"

"You know I had fun doing it," Homolka said. "You know I liked it."

"What did it teach you?"

"Well... we like little girls, I like you to fuck them. If you're gonna fuck them, then I'm gonna lick them. All the little girls."

"What age should they be?"

"Thirteen."

"Why?"

"Because it will make you happy."

"But why 13?"

"That's a good age."

"Because why?" he persisted.

"Because they'll still be virgins."

"What are you saying?" Bernardo asked, looking down at Homolka's head. She stopped to look up at him.

"I'm saying I think you should fuck them and take their virginity. Break their hymens with Snuffles. They're all our children, and I think you should make them ours even more."

"You're right," Bernardo said. "You're absolutely right. That's a good idea. When did you come up with it?"

"Just now," she replied. She resumed the oral sex for a while longer, then stopped and told Bernardo she had a surprise for him. She walked past the camera to her bedroom, beside the rec room, came back with a paper bag a few minutes later, and sat down beside Bernardo. Inside the bag was a brassiere and a pair of panties.

"It's Tammy's," she said, handing him the bra. He smelled it while she began stroking his penis with the underwear, before resuming the fellatio.

its ABSURD that Karla got 12 years in prison as a serial rapist and murderer

But here is a timeline of the murders, with details of what happened to the girls ( CHILD HARM WARNING ):

-- As an adult, Karla would confess to throwing her friend's pet hamster out of a two story window and laughing about it as her friend cried. When she was 17, she went to a pet convention and met the man who would be her husband, Paul Bernardo. Paul was 23 years old and a college student.

-- In December of 1989, Paul and Karla took a romantic vacation to Niagara Falls. It was there that Paul proposed to Karla and she said, "Yes". Everybody was so excited for the couple and Karla's family were thrilled to be getting Paul as a son in law. Just as the couple started planning their Spring wedding, the police released a sketch of a man that was said to be "The Scarborough Rapist".

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/nw8gb6q2.jpg

Many of Paul's friends began to call the police station and tell them that the drawing looked just like Paul. The police found him and brought him in for questioning and took a sample of his DNA. That DNA sat on a shelf for months due to the fact that police had many other samples to go through as well. Paul and Karla moved into Karla's family's house. That was when the rapes in Scarborough suddenly stopped. None of Karla's family thought Paul was responsible for any of the crimes committed. They all thought he was so great and perfect and couldn't even imagine him being a rapist. They all put him on a pedestal, especially Karla's 15 year old sister, Tammy. She looked up to him like the big brother she always wanted.

-- At this point, Paul had never confessed what he had done in Scarborough to Karla. She was completely unaware. What she did notice though, was that he had taken a particular liking for Tammy. Karla said he would often give her a lot of special attention and on several occasions had even made her pretend to be her sister during sex. He eventually told Karla that he wanted to actually have sex with Tammy. Karla said that she just wanted to make Paul happy because she loved him and didn't want him to leave her so she agreed to let him have sex with her 15 year old sister. It would be her Christmas present to her soon to be husband.

-- On December 23, 1990, after the family had gone to sleep, Karla made Tammy an alcoholic drink that had been laced with a drug called Halcion. Karla said that she didn't think the pills were enough to keep her asleep so she also used a bottle of Halothane from the clinic she was working at. She used it to sedate her sister while Paul raped her. When Paul was done, he got off of Tammy and told Karla it was her turn. She obliged. They filmed everything, taking turns holding the camera.

-- During the rape, Tammy, still unconscious began to throw up. She choked on her own vomit which ultimately led to her death. Karla and Paul cleaned up the crime scene and covered up the assault before calling 911. The couple told paramedics they had found her drunk and tried to revive her but it hadn't worked. She was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead. One of the doctors noticed a burn on her mouth- where Karla had held the rag that was soaked in Halothane- Karla and Paul said it was just rug burn from where they had pulled her across the carpet when they found her. No further questions were asked and the doctors concluded that Tammy had died from natural causes.

-- On February 1, 1991, Paul and Karla moved out of the family home into their own house in Port Dalhousie. When they moved, it was said that Paul's abuse really turned up. He told her that he was, in fact, The Scarborough Rapist- although he said he was just joking. At this point, Karla said that she wanted to leave him because he was not only verbally abusing her, but physically as well. He replied that if she ever did that, he would go to the police and tell them what she had done to Tammy. So Karla stayed.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/bcqkgcm.jpg

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/bo2ofaqs.jpg

-- Two weeks before their wedding, Paul surprised Karla with a "wedding gift". Paul had brought Karla a 14 year old girl named Leslie Mahaffy. The couple held the girl in their home where they recorded each other attacking and raping her repeatedly for at least 24 hours before strangling her and dismembering her body. They put different body parts of her body into concrete blocks and dropped those blocks into Lake Gibson.

-- On June 29, 1991, Paul and Karla were married. Paul wrote the couples vows and made sure that they included the terms "Man and wife" over "husband and wife" because Paul wanted to "establish dominance over Karla". He also chose to add that Karla would "Love, Honor, and Obey" him. The same day, fisherman at Lake Gibson came across the concrete blocks that contained the arms, legs, feet, and head of Leslie Mahaffy. The next day, another fisherman found her torso. Karla and Paul took their honeymoon in Hawaii while the police began the murder investigation

-- Over the next year, Karla invited many young girls over to their house where they were drugged and raped repeatedly. These girls all survived the attacks, and had no memory of them. A lot of them were also recorded and held onto by the couple.

-- On April 16, 1992, Paul and Karla came across 15 year old Kristen French. The couple pulled into a church parking lot where Karla pretended they were lost and asked the girl for directions. They then kidnapped the girl and took her back to their house. Her parents reported her missing right away and many witnesses came forward saying that they had seen two people in a cream-colored Camaro pull her into their car and drive away. Her shoe was found at the church, as well as a piece of the map that Karla had, and a lock of brown hair. So cops began quickly looking for this "cream colored Camaro". The problem was that the couple drove a gold Nissan.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/3a5bjzgc.jpg

-- Paul and Karla kept Kristen for several days, raping and torturing her while recording the events. They strangled her and disposed of her body. On April 30, 1992, her body was found in a ditch. Her face had been beaten and her head had been shaved.

-- On January 6, 1993, Karla was admitted to the hospital after Paul beat her with a flash light. He was arrested for assault but got out on bail. Karla never went back to their house. Finally, Paul's DNA was looked at and found to be positively identified as a match for the Scarborough rapist. Now police were finally adding up all the clues to Paul's time frame and were beginning to connect the other murders and assaults to those in St. Catherine's. They reached out to Karla first and she ended up breaking down and telling her parents about most of what she had done. She didn't admit to Tammy's murder at this point though. Her family advised her to get a lawyer.

-- At first, Karla was uncooperative with the police but after talking to her lawyer, she finally agreed to testify against Paul, but only if she was granted immunity from prosecution. The attorney general denied her that but said the would consider a reduced sentence for her involvement. Karla began to spill her guts. She blamed everything on Paul and played the victim role. She said she was forced to be involved and that she was disgusted by the whole situation. She talked about how Paul had forced her and threatened her that if she ever told, he would kill her too.

-- Upon searching their home, police found a list of victims of the Scarborough rapes, books about deviant sexual acts, a hunting knife, video tapes of Kayla and Paul raping and torturing two unidentified girls, and handcuffs. It's said that Karla was most definitely a willing participant in the acts.

-- On July 6, 1993, Karla was convicted after pleading to two counts of manslaughter for the deaths of Leslie and Kristen. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Police didn't know at the time that the initial search of the home had not yet uncovered the biggest piece of evidence- 6 video tapes. Those tapes weren't turned over to authorities until September 22, 1994. Those tapes contained in graphic detail the rape of Karla's sister, Tammy. they also contained the torture and rapes of Leslie and Kristen as well as a tape the couple had titled, "The Fireside Chat".

-- The Fireside Chat was a video shot inside of Karla's family's home. It started out in the basement and eventually moved into Tammy's bedroom. While in the basement, Karla tells Paul that she liked watching him rape her sister. She goes on to say she wants to leave a rose at her grave. When they move into Tammy's bedroom, Karla dresses up in Tammy's clothes and begins to act like her sister. The couple then proceeded to have sex on her bed.

-- The videos clearly show that Karla was not scared or forced. The news of these tapes really upset the community and they accused the court of "making a deal with the devil", though the court was obliged to stand by her 10 year sentence. The Ontario court ordered that the video tapes be destroyed. At the time of her sentence, the court didn't know about Karla's involvement in Tammy's death. It was only in March of 1993 that Karla would write a letter to her parents confessing her involvement. Karla was only supposed to serve 10 years, the court added 2 years on for Tammy's death. She was officially sentenced to a 12 year term on July 6, 1993.

-- On July 20, 1993, Tammy's body was exhumed. A wedding invitation, some notes, and a photo of Karla and Paul were found inside of her casket. The family asked for those items to be removed before Tammy's reinterment.

-- The contents of the video tapes should have led to a conviction of murder for Karla, some speculate she even knew where the tapes were hidden. Her facade of being a victim were quickly deteriorating. The public was outraged and Paul himself admitted to every rape, but said Karla was the one to actually commit the murder. In December 2001, it was decided that the tapes could not possibly be used for any future hearings and they were in fact destroyed. The tapes of Karla watching and commenting on the tapes was sealed and remains so to this day.

-- While in prison, Karla began to take correspondence courses in sociology through Queen's University. She was supposed to pay all of the fees herself, but admitted to receiving some financial help. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in psychology. She was moved from Kingston's Prison for Women to Joliette Institution. Joliette is a medium security prison that critics have called "Club Fed". Karla eventually put in a application to transfer to a halfway house but was denied. She then sued the government.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/h0nv5lt1.jpg

-- She began a romantic and sexual affair with Lynda Véronneau. Lynda, who identified as a man and planned to have a sex change operation upon release was serving time for armed robberies. Lynda had reoffended to be sent back to prison with Karla. He said that Karla liked to be tied up and enjoyed playing victim/rapist role play games. This raised a lot of eyebrows as Karla's release date drew near.

-- Karla lived as much of a luxurious life as possible in prison. She was eventually transferred to a maximum security prison in Quebec where she began another sexual relationship with a convicted murderer named Jean-Paul Gerbet. It was said that they would go up to a fence and strip each other through it and then proceed to touch each other and exchange underwear. During this time, she still continued a long distance relationship with Lynda, who had spent at least $3,000.00 on her at Victoria's Secret. On December 6, 2001, six days before Karla dumped Lynda, she was asked why she continued two separate relationships. Karla replied with, "I don't let go right now because I want my clothes and my computer."

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/c4ugxxrk.jpg

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/h36axz95.png

-- Karla was released after serving her full 12 year sentence under multiple conditions. The public and parents of victims were outraged because they felt that she had gotten nothing but a slap on the wrist and that she still posed a threat to society. A former friend of Karla's was quoted as saying she believes her actions were that of a psycho path, not an abused, controlled woman.

-- On November 30, 2005, the Superior Court Judge of Quebec, James Brunton lifted all of the restrictions that had been placed on Karla. He said there wasn't enough evidence against her to justify them. Ontario begged the court to take take it to the Supreme Court, but it was denied. Karla tried to have her name changed to Emily Chiara Tremblay, it was denied. In 2007, she had her first child, a baby boy. Several nurses refused to tend to her during labor and delivery. Children's Aid said that regardless of her past, they would not automatically judge her.

-- She eventually moved out of Canada so that her one year old son could lead a more normal life and later had two more children. She eventually married her lawyer's brother, Thierry Bordalais. It's said that Karla lived a pretty normal life with her kids up until 2016. Parents began to voice a lot of concern when they found out exactly who was volunteering at the elementary school. Parents wanted her out and away from their kids. the school board said there was no rule against her being there and Karla began to get angry with reporters for trying to speak with her and take her photo.

-- As of January 2020, it was said that she lived in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield alone. Her husband and children were not living with her.

I really am confused by the whole justice system. We live in a world where people get longer terms for stealing than Karla Homolka got for raping and murdering at least 3 children, including her own sister. These crimes are horrible and unforgiveable. Paul is rotting away in a jail cell the size of a closet and she is free to do pretty much whatever she likes. She lived a nice life in prison. Has had multiple sexual partners, gifts, money, scholastic opportunities. It just doesn't make sense.

When someone is released, it's usually under the impression that they aren't liable to commit any more crime. That being said, everyone involved with the case thinks she will in fact kill again. The tapes left Paul's lawyer in shock saying things like "This wasn't a lady who was subjugated. She was happy, compliant, suggestive, and willing. Nothing on the tapes struck me that she was being dominated or coerced." The court even ruled that she was too big of a risk to re-offend and was denied early release... yet she still was able to volunteer with children after her release? She hasn't even been added to a sex offender list, after at least 4 confirmed rapes against children.

-- Early Life:

  • From 1967 to 1969, he attended the Kansas City Art Institute. During this period, he faced legal trouble, receiving a suspended sentence for selling amphetamines. Although he was later apprehended for possessing LSD and marijuana, the charges were ultimately dropped due to insufficient evidence. In 1969, he acquired the residence at 4315 Charlotte, which would later become the site of the incidents. Alongside his culinary pursuits, he eventually established Bob's Bazaar Bizarre.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/de9hzsyd.png

-- Employment:

  • Berdella owned and operated a novelty shop in the Westport Flea Market/Bar & Grill in Kansas City, Missouri. He named his booth "Bob's Bazaar Bizarre" and catered to occult-type tastes.

-- Crimes:

  • On April 4th, 1988, Berdella was apprehended after a victim, whom he had subjected to a week of torment, bravely leapt naked from the second floor of his residence to escape. By then, he had already abducted and subjected at least six young men to unspeakable horrors, leading the Kansas City Police Department to suspect his involvement in two additional disappearances. Berdella meticulously documented his sadistic acts in torture logs and amassed a significant collection of Polaroid photographs depicting his victims. The Kansas City Police Department managed to recover extensive volumes of these pictures, which remain in their possession.

--

  • Berdella bizarrely claimed he was attempting to "assist" some of his victims by administering antibiotics after subjecting them to torture. He even attempted to gouge out one victim's eye, solely driven by a macabre curiosity. Shockingly, he interred one victim's skull in his backyard and disposed of the dismembered remains with the regular trash collection. Regrettably, the bodies were never located and remained in the landfill.

--

  • A few months prior to his apprehension, Berdella was offered a ride home from a bar by individuals who recognized he was too inebriated to drive. During the journey, Berdella allegedly recounted tales of the young men he had abducted and tormented in the preceding months. At the time, this disclosure wasn't taken seriously, given his severely impaired state due to intoxication.

--

  • Berdella asserted that the film adaptation of John Fowles' novel "The Collector," wherein the protagonist abducts and confines a young woman, served as his inspiration during his adolescence.

-- Death:

Berdella died of a heart attack in 1992 after writing letters to a minister claiming the prison officials were not giving him his heart medication. His death was never investigated.

First Victim ; Jerry Howell:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/vuhnwk5y.png

There are no images of him dead , or suffering.

Description:

On July 5, 1984, at the age of 19, Berdella is believed to have claimed his first victim, Jerry Howell. Berdella had initially promised to drive Howell to a dancing contest in Merriam. According to Berdella's account, he supplied Howell with alcohol, diazepam, and acepromazine both in his car and at his residence until Howell lost consciousness. He then administered a potent tranquilizer and secured Howell to his bed.

Howell remained confined to Berdella's bed for approximately 28 hours. During this harrowing captivity, Berdella subjected Howell to a cycle of drugging, torment, sexual assault, and the use of foreign objects, persistently disregarding Howell's inquiries about the reasons for his brutal treatment and his pleas for release. According to Berdella, Jerry met his end either through asphyxiation from his own vomit or due to the combined effects of the gag and medications, rendering it impossible for him to breathe.

Subsequently, Berdella claimed to have made a brief attempt at cardiopulmonary resuscitation after Howell's passing, before relocating the body to the basement. There, he suspended Howell's remains above a large cooking pot and made incisions to his inner elbows and jugular vein, allowing the blood to drain overnight. The following day, he dismembered Howell's body with the use of a chainsaw and boning knives, then wrapped the sections in newspaper and placed them in trash bags. These bags were then deposited into larger ones for disposal by a waste disposal crew at a landfill site.

When questioned by authorities investigating Howell's disappearance, Berdella maintained that he had indeed taken Howell to Merriam as promised, asserting that they had parted ways near Howell's intended destination and he hadn't seen him since.

As with all of Berdella's subsequent murders, he meticulously recorded each instance of sexual and physical torture inflicted upon his victim in a detailed log. Berdella recollected that, like his later victims, Howell had repeatedly implored him to cease the abuse and torment. However, Berdella responded by either ignoring these pleas, mocking his victim, or issuing threats. He insisted to investigators that his actions were not driven by personal gratification but rather by what he termed his "physical and mental satisfaction."

Second victim ; Robert Sheldon:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/9eqmlifv.png

Robert Sheldon after being drugged into unconsciousness by Berdella, April 1985.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/fnobl8vn.jpg

Description:

On April 10, 1985, Robert Sheldon, a 20-year-old former lodger passing through, approached Berdella seeking temporary shelter. Although Sheldon paid rent punctually, Berdella viewed him as an inconvenience. Despite lacking any physical attraction to Sheldon, Berdella drugged and imprisoned him on April 12, after finding him in an intoxicated state upon returning from work. Berdella maintained that he harbored no deep-seated malice towards Sheldon, but rather saw him as an outlet for his pent-up anger and frustration towards others.

Over the course of three days, Sheldon was subjected to a series of tortures including the application of drain cleaner to his left eye, the insertion of needles under his fingertips, the binding of his wrists with piano wire aimed at causing permanent nerve damage, and the filling of his ears with caulking to impair his hearing.

On April 15, three days into Sheldon's captivity, a workman arrived for scheduled roof repairs, prompting Berdella to end Sheldon's life by suffocating him with a sack and tightening it with a rope. Later, Berdella dissected Sheldon's body in the third-floor bathroom.

Third Victim ; Mark Wallace:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/g2poacj8.png

James Ferris, bound, gagged and injected, September 1985.

Description:

In June, Berdella encountered Mark Wallace, whom he vaguely knew from previous yard work assistance. Wallace sought refuge in Berdella's tool shed during a severe thunderstorm. As with Sheldon, Berdella invited him inside. Observing Wallace's heightened distress and despondency, Berdella offered to administer chlorpromazine, explaining it would help him "calm down and relax." Wallace agreed, and 30 minutes later, Berdella decided to hold him captive.

Wallace was taken to the second-floor bedroom, enduring nearly a day of captivity and torture, including the use of alligator clips on his nipples to administer electric shocks whenever he showed signs of losing consciousness. According to Berdella, approximately an hour after "experimenting" with hypodermic needles by inserting them into various muscles on Wallace's back, Mark Wallace succumbed to a combination of "the drugs, the gag, and the lack of oxygen." Berdella recorded his time of death as 7:00 p.m. on June 23.

Fourth Victim ; James Ferris (This is where it starts to get interesting :marseywink: ):

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/1pl4nhnj.png

James Ferris, in a portrait taken just months before his death.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/ukxymzgl.png

James Ferris, bound, gagged and injected, September 1985

Description:

On September 26, 1985, Berdella received a call from an acquaintance named James Ferris, who requested a short-term stay at Berdella's residence. Agreeing, Berdella had ulterior motives of abducting Ferris, arranging to meet him at a bar later that evening. Despite the severity of his actions towards his first three victims, Berdella asserted that Ferris was the first individual he deliberately subjected to torture. He also disclosed to investigators that during the captivity of his final three victims, there were moments when he refrained from recording further details in his abuse log, assuming the victim might not "endure much longer."

After bringing Ferris home, Berdella drugged him with crushed tranquilizers hidden in a meal, then bound him to the bed, subjecting him to nearly continuous torture for around 27 hours. The torment included the repeated application of 7,700-volt electrical shocks to the shoulders and testicles, lasting up to five minutes each time, as well as acupuncture using hypodermic needles on the neck and genital area. Ferris gradually descended into delirium, yet Berdella persisted in his physical and sexual assaults. In his log, Berdella eventually noted that Ferris was "Unable to sit up for more than 10–15 seconds." The subsequent entry recorded "Very delayed breathing," concluding with Berdella's grim note that Ferris had passed away, using a term from his previous career as a chef: "86," which Berdella later explained meant anything from 'Throw it out' to 'Stop the project'.

Fifth Victim ; Todd Stoops:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/ef15r8j2.png

Todd Stoops after two weeks as a hostage, June 1986. His appearance had changed so dramatically police did not recognize Stoops from Berdella's earlier photos of him.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/511xnet.png

Stoops receiving a 7,700-volt jolt of electricity from Berdella.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/te5ioo.jpg

Description:

Todd Stoops was a 23-year-old individual struggling with drug addiction and occasionally engaged in sex work. He, along with his wife, had briefly stayed at Berdella's house twice in 1984. After their second departure from Berdella's residence, Stoops was not encountered again until a serendipitous meeting at Kansas City's Liberty Memorial Park on June 17, 1986. Berdella extended an invitation to his home, offering lunch and an additional proposition of sex, as Stoops mentioned he needed $13 for drugs (equivalent to about $35 as of 2023).

Berdella later emphasized to investigators that he had a strong physical attraction to Stoops, and this victim was kept captive for a period of two weeks before his demise. Berdella systematically heightened Stoops' terror, aiming to mold him into a compliant and incapacitated sexual captive. He resorted to administering electrical shocks through Stoops' closed eyes in an attempt to blind him, and introduced drain cleaner into his larynx in a futile effort to stifle his screams.

In the second week of his captivity, Stoops, longing for a soft drink and sandwich, was met with a refusal from Berdella, prompting him to break into tears. On June 27, Berdella inflicted severe internal damage on Stoops by rupturing his anal wall with his fist, resulting in bleeding and discharge. As Stoops' captivity neared its end, Berdella attempted to provide him with ice cream and soup, though Stoops found it impossible to keep anything down. By the final day of his confinement, Stoops had become so feeble that Berdella later recounted he could no longer "breathe in a sitting position." On July 1, 1986, Stoops passed away; a forensic pathologist later attested that the ruptured anal wall led to septic shock, ultimately proving fatal.

Sixth Victim ; Larry Pearson:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/dobolih.jpg

Larry Pearson, shortly after being captured by Berdella in June 1987, handcuffed, gagged with piano wire and injected with a hypodermic needle

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/xtwrkye2.jpg

Pearson some time later, his face battered and his right hand broken.

Description:

In the spring of 1987, Berdella struck up a casual friendship with Larry Wayne Pearson, a 20-year-old. Their acquaintance began when Pearson visited Berdella's shop and shared an early fascination with witchcraft and wizardry from his childhood. Pearson then temporarily stayed with Berdella, contributing by performing household chores as a form of rent payment. Berdella claimed he initially had no intention of taking Pearson captive. However, the plan to do so began to form on June 23, about two weeks after Berdella bailed Pearson out of jail and noticed Pearson's lack of interest in finding employment in the weeks leading up to his captivity.

On the afternoon of June 23, Berdella and Pearson watched the movie Creepshow 2 together before having lunch. As they drove around Kansas, Pearson playfully mentioned his past involvement in robbing gay men in Wichita. This revelation solidified Berdella's decision to hold Pearson captive. That evening, Berdella ensured Pearson became intoxicated, then injected him with chlorpromazine and moved him to the basement. There, he secured Pearson's hands above his head, attaching the rope to a brick column, and administered drain cleaner to Pearson's larynx. Berdella also brought an electrical transformer to the basement.

According to Berdella, Pearson was the most cooperative of his six victims. By the fifth day of captivity, after enduring torture including repeated electrical shocks and the breaking of several hand bones to establish submission, Berdella concluded that Pearson had earned his trust in continuing to comply with the sexual and physical abuse. As a form of reward, Pearson was moved to the second floor, with Berdella assuring him that if he remained cooperative, he would not endure as much pain as he had in the basement. In the latter part of his six-week captivity, Pearson trained himself to sleep without moving, so as not to provoke Berdella and risk further torture or being returned to the basement.

After six weeks, Pearson bit deeply into Berdella's penis, then screamed that he couldn't endure the ongoing mistreatment. In response, Berdella first rendered Pearson unconscious by striking him with a tree limb, then suffocated him using a bag and ligature. Berdella then drove to the hospital for treatment of his wound. Pearson's body was later dismembered in the basement, and initially, his head was stored in a plastic bag in Berdella's freezer before being buried in the backyard.

Final "Victim" (Got away) ; Christopher Bryson:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/278bbb9i.png

Chris Bryson in captivity, as photographed by Berdella, April 1988.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/cdaj8ts4.png

Chris , sometime today.

Description:

At 1:00 a.m. on March 29, 1988, Berdella abducted his final victim, Christopher Bryson, a 22-year-old male prostitute, enticing him to his residence with the promise of payment for sexual services. Inside Berdella's home, Bryson was struck unconscious with an iron bar and then secured to Berdella's bed. There, he endured similar methods of abuse and torture as Berdella's previous victims. However, in Bryson's case, Berdella repeatedly swabbed his eyes with ammonia, emphasizing to him: "The only things you need to think about are you, me, and this house."

After a few days, Berdella disclosed to Bryson that he had developed a level of "trust" in his captive. He explained that while he was open to discussing certain aspects of the abuse and torture Bryson was enduring, there would be no negotiations concerning the sexual abuse. Berdella concluded this conversation with a stern admonition: "I've gone this far with other people before, and they're no longer here because of mistakes they made."

Escape:

By the third day of his captivity, Bryson had managed to gain enough trust from Berdella to negotiate a daily routine where his hands were bound in front of him after the sexual abuse, rather than being tied above his head, under the pretense that it was affecting the circulation in his arms. He also persuaded Berdella to leave a television on in the room, with the remote control within his reach, for when Berdella was absent. Bryson admitted to investigators that he constantly strategized about escaping. On the subsequent day, he successfully freed himself from his restraints by using a book of matches Berdella had inadvertently left within his reach while he was away at work.

Cloaked only in a dog collar, Bryson fled from the house by leaping from a second-floor window, resulting in a broken foot. He sprinted towards a meter reader on the opposite side of the street, urgently imploring him to contact the police. The meter reader guided Bryson to the nearest residence, where the occupants promptly summoned the authorities. Within minutes, the police arrived on the scene.

Upon being questioned by four officers, Bryson initially claimed he had been abducted by Berdella while hitchhiking. He stated that he had been forcibly taken, subjected to rape and torture for four days, and managed to escape by leaping from a second-floor window of the property. Brydella had kept him restrained to a bed on the second floor, repeatedly sodomizing him, administering drugs, and injecting his throat with drain cleaner to impair his ability to speak loudly. As Bryson recounted his ordeal, the officers observed his red, swollen eyes, along with visible scars and welts covering his entire body. Two officers were tasked with discreetly monitoring the property, while Bryson was escorted to the Menorah Medical Center for treatment, accompanied by a third officer. Meanwhile, the fourth officer radioed the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) to request an official search warrant for the property.

Confessions done by The Kansas City Butcher:

Between December 13 and 15, 1988, after changing his plea and seeking an agreement not to pursue the death penalty, Berdella provided detailed testimony to prosecutors. He revealed that the film "The Collector," which he first saw in 1965, had a profound impact on him. Following his initial feelings of shock and disgust after his first killing, the movie resurfaced in his memory and became a driving psychological force behind his actions in subsequent murders. Berdella explained to investigators that once he chose to hold his victims captive, he no longer saw them as people.

In his confession, Berdella clarified that the abbreviated entries in his torture logs were shorthand descriptions of the abusive methods he inflicted, or they detailed his victims' reactions and his initial observations upon entering the room. For example, "CP" referred to the chlorpromazine he used for restraining, while "DC" denoted swabbing eyes with drain cleaner or injecting it into vocal cords.

Entries like "EK" or "EKG" signified the use of electrical shocks, while others specified the location of the abuse. For instance, in relation to victim James Ferris, Berdella noted he injected ketamine into his neck and shoulder. Berdella also confessed to burying the victims' heads in his backyard and explained the process of retrieving and cleaning the first skull. He denied any sinister intent behind these actions.

Berdella was able to name all of his victims. While one victim (Mark Wallace) was seized by opportunity, the others were captured after failed attempts to redirect their lifestyles, leading to frustration. He provided graphic details of the abuse and torture inflicted on each victim and recorded it in his logs. He stated that he tried to prevent malnutrition or infection by occasionally administering antibiotics or nutrients intravenously as the abuse escalated.

The methods of torture included high-voltage shocks, starvation, application of alkali-based detergents to throats, vocal cords, or eyes, and bludgeoning hands to render them unusable. Berdella admitted that the level of abuse increased with each successive victim, and he saw the Polaroid images he took of his victims as a "trophy or record of the event."

Despite extensive searches, the remains of all six victims were never recovered. They had been dismembered, placed in trash bags, and taken to unknown landfill sites.

Aftermath:

In November 1988, a series of auctions were conducted to sell off the extensive collection of artifacts and furniture seized from Berdella's residence and business. The proceeds from these auctions were earmarked to cover his escalating legal expenses during the ongoing legal proceedings. The auctions garnered significant national attention, with telephone bids pouring in from various parts of the United States. While some items fetched prices below expectations, the first day's auction alone raised over $60,000 for this purpose (equivalent to $151,000 in 2023).

In December 1988, a local entrepreneur acquired Berdella's house for an undisclosed amount. Subsequently, the property was demolished.

--

Victims , again... So no one ever forgets:

At the time of Berdella's apprehension, he had abducted, tortured, and murdered a minimum of six young men (initial suspicions arose regarding two other disappearances). Despite the presence of over twenty different men in the 334 Polaroid images and thirty-four snapshot prints found at 4315 Charlotte Street following his arrest, Berdella insisted that the six identified victims, whom he had confessed to killing, were the only ones he had murdered.

--Jerry Howell, 19, July 5, 1984: An acquaintance of Berdella who succumbed to asphyxiation after nearly 28 hours of captivity, involving repeated sexual assaults. Howell had known Berdella since 1979.

--Robert Sheldon, 20, April 12, 1985: Sheldon had temporarily stayed with Berdella on April 10, two days before Berdella decided to hold him captive on April 12. He was fatally suffocated on April 15. Initially, his head was interred in Berdella's garden, but later retrieved and stored in Berdella's bedroom closet.

--Mark Wallace, 27, June 22, 1985: Discovered accidentally seeking shelter from a thunderstorm in Berdella's tool shed. Wallace passed away due to a combination of oxygen deprivation and administered drugs at 7 p.m. on June 23.

--James Ferris, 25, September 26, 1985: The first victim whom Berdella admitted to intentionally torturing before his demise. Berdella recorded Ferris becoming delirious from the exhibited torture and administered medication. One of the final entries in his capture log stated, "unable to sit up more than 10-15 seconds." His death was noted in Berdella's log as "Stop the project."

--Todd Stoops, 23, June 17, 1986: Abducted due to Berdella's sexual frustration with him. The torture leading to his death included electric shocks -via a spatula placed over his eyelid in an unsuccessful attempt to blind him. Stoops passed away from a combination of blood loss and infection on July 1.

--Larry Wayne Pearson, 20, June 23, 1987: Detained until August 5. Pearson was fatally suffocated after six weeks of captivity, which included the use of a piano wire tied around his wrists to cause nerve damage. His head was preserved and buried in Berdella's garden.

--

Things to note:

  • During his initial year at the KCAI, Berdella earned a reputation as an attentive and gifted student. However, as he entered his second year, he adopted an outspoken anti-authoritarian stance. He formed connections with a group of students who provided him with drugs, which he then sold to fellow students for a profit. Alongside this, he started to regularly abuse alcohol. Additionally, he engaged in acts of animal cruelty on at least two occasions. In one instance, he decapitated a duck in front of his peers, and in the other, he conducted experiments involving sedatives and tranquilizers on a dog.

--

  • At the age of 19, Berdella was arrested for attempting to sell methamphetamine to an undercover officer; he was released after posting a $3,000 bond (equivalent to about $25,600 as of 2023). He would later plead guilty to the offense and was handed a five-year suspended sentence. One month after this first arrest, Berdella and two other students were arrested for possession of marijuana and LSD in Johnson County. On this occasion, Berdella could not post bond, and he spent five days in jail; the charges against him and one of the other students would be dropped due to a lack of evidence.

--

  • Berdella started frequenting gay bars in Akron in 1967, but it wasn't until several years after he moved to Kansas City that he formed any substantial relationships.

--

  • Berdella held a brief relationship with a bisexual Vietnam veteran in 1982 who had a severe emotional disorder. The relationship was one of the few serious ones Berdella engaged in when living in Kansas City

--

  • Only Berdella referred to James Ferris by his given first name, Walter

--

  • In his subsequent confessions to investigators, Berdella stated he had dismembered the bodies of Sheldon, Wallace, Ferris, and Stoops in the bathtub in his third floor bathroom, whereas the bodies of Howell and Pearson had been dismembered in his basement.

--

  • This more detailed questioning occurred after Bryson had been released from the Menorah Medical Center, after he had undergone several days of treatment for his injuries.

--

  • Shortly after his release from hospital and further questioning by the KCPD, Christopher Bryson lapsed into cocaine abuse. With the state's assistance, he would complete a drug rehabilitation program. Bryson would also testify in person at an initial, pretrial hearing on June 9

--

  • Investigators had until 07:30 on April 3 to compile sufficient evidence to formulate either an arrest warrant, or a statement of probable cause to justify Berdella's continued incarceration. To persuade a judge to sign the statement of probable cause justifying the continued search of Berdella's house and his detainment, police had Bryson – still hospitalized – identify Berdella as his captor from a photographic array, while also listing the statutory crimes committed and provable in a courtroom, via listing the findings thus far at his house. Bail was denied for Berdella at this stage, and the search of his property continued under the supervision of a criminologist from the FBI's Kansas City office

--

  • When formal murder by dismemberment charges were filed against Berdella, his bail sum was increased to $750,000 (the equivalent of approximately $1,887,400 as of 2023)

--

  • Aside from Pearson's severed head and the striations upon his vertebrae, the accompanying evidence, compiled to bring this charge, included some 60 Polaroid photos of Pearson; the logs Berdella had kept of his captivity of the subject (and which the handwriting was proven to be Berdella's); chemical tests upon Pearson's hair which indicated the subject may have received fatal dosages of various tranquilizers; the injury Pearson was known to have inflicted upon Berdella on August 5, 1987; and the fact Berdella had paid Pearson's bond in June 1987.

--

  • Berdella entered this plea of guilty at his arraignment hearing (in the voluntary company of his public defender) due to the fact that, at this hearing, unless the state has filed notice of intent to seek the death penalty at an arraignment hearing in which first-degree murder charges were filed, the automatic sentence to be filed upon receipt of a guilty plea is life imprisonment without parole

--

  • Berdella's identification of the two human heads upon his property had by this stage been corroborated by forensic anthropologists

He was sure it was a 'good side', on which both Sunni and Shia Muslim soldiers were united to fight against ISIS. Eventually, he gained enough trust to assist with documenting the arrests and torture of detainees. Some of them turned out to be innocent civilians whose admission to aiding ISIS was forced. Arkady was asked to edit these parts of the footage, only leaving for publication the proper 'confessions'. At least six separate incidents of human rights violations - technically, war crimes - were documented. However, the unit had been blacklisted in the US in March 2015 under the Leahy Act, so it was already known for human rights violations.

Sections go as follows.

1. Introduction. So when, where and how it started. Includes a 10 mins long documentary from ABC News. It has short clips depicting the abuse, as well as photos, and one execution clip (it skips death; full version is in next section, though).

2. Torture. Includes photos and descriptions, also one execution video.

3. Aftermath. About Arkady having to fleed Iraq, journalism awards and US not giving enough fucks.

4. Sources.

⠀INTRODUCTION (AND DOCUMENTARY) :marseylickinglips:

At first, Ali Arkady planned to produce a 'positive story', focused on the Emergency Response Division (ERD) of Iraq's Ministry of Interior. Previously, is work in Iraq was also focused on a project 'Happy Baghdad'. Quoting a description of his TED talk, 'In hope of showing the other side of life in Iraq, war photographer Ali Arkady worked on a project that revealed the bright aspects of the Iraqi personality'. It has (or had?) a dedicated FB fanpage. The ERD story had a plot twist. Arkady wanted to show that both Shia and Sunni Muslim soldiers can work together in the fight against ISIS. Over time, he gained enough trust to be allowed to record scenes showing the torture of captives. He was even sent a 'field execution' video of a handcuffed prisoner. Even though only 6 incidents were documented, the commander's statements (which you're gonna be familiar with after checking the doc below) clearly show that these actions were normalized. Eventually, Arkady had to flee Iraq. In 2017, the case started to be covered in the media, with longer coverage coming specifically from ABC News and the Toronto Star.

Timestamps are below the short (10 mins long) documentary.

There's not much to timestamp. At 2;25, there's a description of the first incident convincing Ali Arkady that guys are not heroes. 3;30 - another incident is described, about a sheepherder (it will be important in the next section). 4;50 onwards - commander's opinion is presented. 5;55 - another incident, with two brothers. 6;35 - a few days later, the dead bodies of the two brothers were sent (video, I mean) to Arkady (unblurred version is in the next section). 7;15 - about how the US 'does not' provide support for the unit because of the previous (not the one Arkady documented) human rights violations. 8;10 - on Happy Baghdad and how Arkady and two non-heroes made friends. 9;10 - about soldiers providing Arkady a short field execution video.

Quote on the ERD itself:

The mission of the ERD (Emergency Response Division) turned from small to big after the entry of ISIS into Al-Anbar province in Iraq (2014). They fought real battles in Tikrit, Bije, Diala, Al Faluja, and Al Mosul (2014).

ERD consists of three units: reconnaissance, snipers, and task force. Captain Omar Nazar is the head of the Task Force, and Corporal Haider Ali works in the same branch. Their squads were trained by the coalition forces, including various types of raids, as well as day and night operations.

Their mission is to achieve special operations against ISIS on the information provided by reconnaissance (intelligence branch). Omar and Haidar believe that they're fighting against the most fierce enemy in the world — ISIS. But they are confident because they have returned victors after every battle and inflicted huge losses on ISIS' ranks.

Ali Arkady received authorization from the Commander in Chief of the ERD forces (Col. Thamer Mohammed Ismail — battle name Abu Turab) to follow these forces to work on a photo story and a documentary. Arkady followed them from battles in Tikrit, Falluja, and, ultimately, the ongoing battle for Mosul.

(the battle of Mosul was ongoing from October 2016 to July 2017)

⠀TORTURE :marsey57:

Before torture, let's start with the short execution clip. With a watermark, though. It's probably from the Toronto Star channel, and the original video they linked was already deleted.

The exact numbers of photos and videos were not precized. It was only stated that there were 'hundreds of' photos, 'dozens of' videos, 'hours of' footage, and some audio recordings. One project was meant to show 20 photos summarizing the unit's activity in the most comprehensive way possible, chosen from among 450 photos. It's in general, though, not about torture.

Some photos below are 2-3 MB in size, if they don't load, just wait!

First, the mentioned incident with a shepherd. His name was Mehdi Mahmoud, and two soldiers tortured him. He was put on the ground (6th photo) after one hour. Mehdi Mahmoud was displaced from Mosul with his son, 16 yo Ahmed, and arrested upon his arrival. Both of them were tortured and released. Two weeks after the incident, Ali Arkady heard that Ahmed was arrested again and killed with other detainees near Qabr Al-Abd.

Now, time for the nighttime arrest incident. You have clips in the documentary. Photos show the arrest of Rashid. The ERD team entered his home while the whole family was asleep. Rashid's wife, Taghreed, and two children, Hind and Cedara, were left untouched, and he was released the same night. However, Rashid was arrested a week later. Another week passed, and Rashid died in the intelligence center.

Another victim (no torture photos in the source), Raad Hindia. He was married, had two kids, and also worked in a mosque as a cleaner. After the second arrest, he was tortured for three hours and then transferred to the intelligence center. Two weeks later, he was executed without trial :marseydepressed:

Here is the case of two brothers - Ahmed Abdullah Hassan and Leish Abdullah Hassan. Previously, they were confirmed by the Iraqi special forces to be civilians, not ISIS fighters, and they received permission to enter the Gogjali area. They moved here from Quds, where the fighting started between the Iraqi forces and ISIS. Eventually, the Iraqi Federal Police arrested them and handed them over to the ERD.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/8u6ozyf.jpg https://pomf2.lain.la/f/hg5a7jjv.jpg

Here, fingers are put in Leish's eyes, and knife is put behind Ahmed's ear. About the latter, the soldier claimed that it was US soldiers who taught him which spot right behind the ear is especially painful to pin.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/fix7c64s.jpg https://pomf2.lain.la/f/hz4mpwt6.jpg

Nervous as the abuse begins, photographer Arkady expects an officer will enter the room at any moment and shut down his cameras. He continues documenting, alternating his camera between still and video mode. Here, we see an interrogator Ali Abdul Hussein gouge his fingers into the eye sockets of detainee Ahmad Abdullah Hassan Mohammed. British soldiers who were found to have tortured Iraqi prisoners in 2003 also used this method, according to an inquiry into the abuse.

(I've already made a post about this, too, that's Basra case - kinda British counterpart of Abu Ghraib)

Here, Ahmed gets finger pushed down inside his mouth. Other descriptions suggest it's pushed under the tongue. If it doesn't look bad for you, try doing it on yourself now :marseywink: In the second photo, it's Ahmed again.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/bzv0nt8m.jpg https://pomf2.lain.la/f/air801xh.jpg

Interrogator Hussein places a gloved hand inside the detainee's mouth, pressing down hard underneath the tongue. “If I push hard enough, I can break your voice this way,” he said aloud, according to photographer Arkady.

Eventually, Ahmed lost consciousness. I didn't see a caption for this second photo (just found it as related to the case), but if you look at the colors of the clothes, it seems that it is Ahmed. Can be one of the trophy photos taken by the perpetrators themselves (more below).

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/0ahv6bo0.jpg https://pomf2.lain.la/f/vo957r8r.jpg

TROPHY PHOTOS: Photos taken by the Iraqi military perpetrators and later shared with photographer Ali Arkady show the torment of brothers Laith and Ahmad al-Hayali on the morning of their deaths. The stylized calligraphy tattooed on interrogator Aba al-Fathil's arm offers clues to sectarian motives — it says “Ya Ali” and includes a representation of a split-blade sword known as a Zulfikar, two important Shia Muslim symbols.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/ry9ogwg.png

And a promised video.

A 20-second clip showing an Iraqi special forces interrogator looming over the lifeless bodies of two Sunni Muslim brothers after a night of torture, snarling, “We crushed them” in revenge for sins against Iraq's Shiite community.

There was one particularly entertained guy, which you've seen, e.g., in the knife against the skull (spot behind the ear) photo and in the one with pushing a finger down under the tongue.

Interrogator Ali Abdul Hussein is known in the unit as “Mushtaraka” (“Virus”) — so named for his computer skills and overall ability to keep the soldiers connected. The multilingual soldier also spent time as a liaison between the ERD and U.S. forces. Here, we see him press a knife beneath the ear of detained brother Ahmad. He tells photographer Arkady he learned this technique from American soldiers.

This one was mentioned not only as the soul of the party with IT skills, but also as an especially sadistic guy. It's time to get back to the two brothers.

In one of the most brutal scenes captured by Arkrady, two half-brothers, one a used car salesman, the other a falafel stand operator, in the town of Bazwaia were subjected to a seven-hour torture session. As with their previous victim, Arkrady says, E.R.D. officers did not offer any proof that the brothers had any affiliation with the group.

"They were not ISIS," Arkady said.

American special operations forces have advised and coordinated military operations in eastern Mosul, but no Americans appear in the hours of videos shot by Arkady. In this case, however, the particularly sadistic torturer was a man they knew as "Ali Mushtarakah," who E.R.D. officers identified to ABC News as their liaison with Coalition Forces.

He shocked the brothers with live wires, ripped out the beard of one prisoner, and placed a knife behind the ear of the other, pressing it into his flesh while demanding he recite the ISIS pledge.

Mushtarakah, who claimed to have worked as a contractor and interpreter for the American military in Iraq for a decade, boasted to Arkady he had been taught such interrogation methods by American forces.

"Say the pledge of allegiance [to ISIS] or I will make you unable to talk anymore," Mushtarakah shouts at one brother, as he presses the prisoner's face into the floor with his knee.

"I swear, I don't know it,” the prisoner pleads, wincing in pain with each twist of Mushtarakah's blade. “I swear I don't know it.”

But Mushtarakah persisted.

"Say the pledge of allegiance or I'll turn you mute," he said.

It's not just him having fun, as apparently entertainment was the main goal of some torture. Alright, my own opinion time. Why not make anti-ISIS propaganda the main goal? The guys were tortured and later killed for real. You don't need to really hurt and kill someone to make a photo look like there is an ongoing interrogation. If so, it can be 15 minutes, not a whole hour or three on regular. Keeping 'trophies' is a known pattern in such cases, too. People want to believe what they're told is justified. In my opinion, if they were staging the interrogations well enough, some uninformed person would like to believe these were ISIS guys. Just like WPD users who like to believe that the torture they're watching was 'justified' and 'deserved'.

⠀AFTERMATH :marseyunamused:

Although Ali Arkady got enough trust to record the torture, he wasn't sure whether he'd be asked to delete it. In at least one case, he quickly transferred the photos to a hard drive, believing what he had witnessed (it was about these two brothers) could be past the limit. Arkady fled to Europe with his wife and young daughter, afraid of the consequences of betraying the trust of the ERD members. How did he escape? Here's the story, which followed the description of this short execution video.

Nazar and Ali later shared the video with Arkady via WhatsApp.

“They were proud of it. I felt sick. I felt scared. It was crazy,” he said.

The next night, as the soldiers slept, Arkady crept upstairs and called VII Photo on Skype seeking guidance. He knew he had a strong story to tell. He feared the soldiers would turn on him. The photographers advised him to get out. Arkady told the soldiers his daughter was ill, and he fled. Barely a week later, he had made his way to Doha, then onward to Europe. His wife and daughter soon followed. Arrangements were also made for Arkady's parents, though he wants the details to remain secret.

Ali Arkady's courageous photos and video of the brutal torture and killing of Iraqi civilians by a branch of Iraqi special forces speak for themselves. The Toronto Star was approached by VII Photo Agency, which represents Arkady in mid-April [2017] and agreed to publishing the photos and video after we had interviewed Arkady and verifying to our satisfaction their authenticity. Foreign affairs reporter Mitch Potter, national security reporter Michelle Shephard and national bureau chief Bruce Campion-Smith spent several weeks assigned to that task.

(about 'we' - it is quoted from the website of Online News Association, but the context is Toronto Star's project from Arkady, titled Bound. Tortured. Killed.)

News from May 2017 said that there was no proper reaction from the US, even though the unit was already blacklisted.

The unit had already been blacklisted in March 2015 under the Leahy Act, which requires foreign military units to be banned from receiving U.S. military aid if there is "credible information that such unit has committed a gross violation of human rights.” Top American commanders, however, have continued to praise the successes of the E.R.D. and boast of a "fruitful partnership" between the U.S. military and the unit, including coordinating airstrikes on ISIS.

'What if'?

A spokesperson for the U.S.-led Operation Inherent Resolve in Baghdad said officials were not previously aware of the atrocities documented by Arkady, and the U.S. military has since contacted Iraqi officials to discuss the incidents exposed by ABC News. The spokesperson also defended, however, the U.S. military's legal right to work with a unit deemed essential to the campaign to liberate Mosul.

Above, you see a part of the last photo of the victim. Her father took it right before she left to celebrate her first New Year's Eve outside home, in a club. In Poland, a moratorium on executions was issued in 1988, and the death penalty was removed from the penal code in 1997. For some people here currently arguing against death penalty in case of wrongful conviction, Tomasz Komenda is a 'poster boy'. [there will be edits]

TL;DR. Story takes place in Lower Silesia (SW Poland). 15 yo Małgorzata Kwiatkowska - I'll later use disminutive - was spending New Year's Eve in the club in the nearby village, with her friend. The next day, 1st of January 1997, parents reported her missing after asking people around; friend didn't know her whereabouts, too. Separately, police received info about an unknown dead girl laying naked on someone's property, near the barn. It was determined that she was raped with a blunt object or e.g. fist - enough to cause internal injuries. There were bite marks on the body. The victim was left alive in the freezing cold (around -16 C, or 3 F), heavily beaten, eventually dying of internal bleeding and, mostly, hypothermia. Police determined that 2 or 3 people participated. Three years later, someone reported that Tomasz Komenda seems like the man on the sketch; police didn't look for that one or two more suspects. Komenda was arrested and charged in April/May 2000, and in 2004 - sentenced for 25 years. He attempted suicide three times, and was harassed both by the other inmates and prison guards. In total, after spending 18 years imprisoned, he was released on parole in March 2018, and acquitted two months later. The gov compensation for the wrongful conviction was the highest ever paid in Poland - 13 million zloty (around €2,9 mln or $3,25 mln). Two men were sentenced in 2021. Apart from the reported DNA tests results, there's either vague or barely any evidence pointing at them. The investigation was messy since the beginning. Many witnesses, of which one is now convicted, were threatened by both the police and unknown people - up to death threats. This isn't really a solved case.

Sections go as follows:

  1. Crime scene video and photos. The body is always blurred or covered, in case of the video - it's not perfectly covered, but you won't see any details of the injuries. Descriptions of the injuries are partially released.

  2. What happened on New Year's Eve? - with maps and aerial view for comparision. Includes descriptions of the injuries, and of the crime scene (these important for you to imagine how the events could go).

  3. How to make a killer on paper. Apart from vague evidence, things not matching in Komenda's testimonies were also overlooked. It doesn't even make sense a made-up story.

  4. Old evidence, old witnesses, new suspects. There are two guys convicted for now. Both claim they're innocent, but talk about it in completely different ways. I also included here a description of the impact that wrongful conviction had on Tomasz, including videos from the acquittal.

⠀CRIME SCENE VIDEO AND PHOTOS :marseyjourno:

Crime scene video is included here without any edits. It was already uploaded with the partially censored body (and the ambient in the background, for these complaining about music in any video). Timestamps:

1;30 - general view for the neighbourhood ends, police officer(s) and one specialist(?) enter the property.

2;10 onwards - cameraman reaches the point, from which the body was visible.

2;35 onwards - Spot 1, a piece of clothing. Filmed from various angles and in close-up.

3;10 - Spot 2, where the body was found. Comment in the backround about the buttons found, and pointing at places where the blouse and (not visible) the cap were found.

3;30 - cameraman is told to record a bloody smudge on the steel bar.

4;10 - I can't hear it well, but probably there's a blouse pointed at Spot 3.

Before 4;30 - camera moves to Spot 5, where a wristwatch was found, and two shoelaces. I can't tell if either of these two is clearly visible, but both were mentioned.

4;45 - now, cameraman is asked to film Spot 5, where are two spots with fresh faeces (it's not stated in the video, but they were victim's one). A bloodstain and a shoelace are mentioned.

5;05 to 5;10 - pointing at the shred of clothing, which the man commenting assumes to be a part of the underwear.

5;30 - finally a good view on the wristwatch.

6;10 - cameraman is asked (and confirms) whether he'd recorded the general view. Officer tells him that he will turn the body now. Most of it is covered, but now you can see some of the injuries on legs.

6;25 to 6;35 - unclear, but there are blood spots mentioned, and that the exact injuries [topic] is left for later. I guess it's about recording them, instead of general view.

6;45 - closeup on legs. The socks will later turn out to be an important detail in one witness' testimony.

7;30 - cameraman stops focusing on things laying on the ground, and the general view for another part of the property (deeper into it) is shown till the end...

...at 8;10. The sound is cut, but in the last part muted here, this guy told the cameraman that there are shreds of a black lace clothing.

It's around 90 MB, if it's not loading for you, try to wait a while or just download to your device!

What you should pay attention to when watching above video, as it will be important later (mostly when describing how the crime scene shows some events' aftermath):

  1. The socks, already mentioned.

  2. Girl's hair being tangled and messed up (it's not visible here, but some stuff was entangled in them).

  3. She is lying on her dress.

  4. Barn's wall, not only the steel bar or these crates.

  5. How wide apart are her body and the pieces of evidence.

Not all crime scene photos are released, at least few were shown in videos or (rarely) separately.

13th. A spot when the wristwatch was found.

⠀BOŻENA H. :marseyunamused:

Here, a few black and white photos from the on-site investigation. Click to enlarge. These photos aren't relating to Małgosia, but to Bożena H., who was sexually assaulted in Jelcz-Laskowice (around 3 km from Miłoszyce) on 11th of August 1996 by two men. The first wanna-be rapist was scared by another guy, who pretended to be helpful and wishing to assist her on a way back, but raped her instead. One of them was possibly the same perpetrator that assaulted Małgosia. Tomasz Komenda was wrongfully convicted also for this crime in December 2004, and acquitted a few years later.

1st and 2nd. A scene near the holiday resort in Jelcz-Laskowice. It shows the spot where a red Fiat 126-P was parked, and - in the second photo - where Bożena H. received blow to the head, then was walked to the side road.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/wkyj63gs.jpg

3rd and 4th. First - the same scene as in Photo 2, with the concrete slabs visible. Second - close-up of this spot, the name of the street from which the photo was taken isn't visible.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/ld2b975i.jpg

5th and 6th. The same scene like in Photo 4, with the first rape scene marked with circle. Then, around 300 m from this spot, there's a second rape scene (it was a second guy, who played her 'rescuer').

7th and 8th. Here, the woman shows the spot when the red Fiat was parked, and where rape attempt took place.

⠀WHAT HAPPENED ON NEW YEAR'S EVE :marseycryinglaptop:

First, general map. 1 - Miłoszyce, 2 - Jelcz Laskowice, 3 - Gajków, 4 - Plac Grunwaldzki (tram and bus station in Wrocław, will be important later in this story), 5 - Piekary.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/yh1nmjhp.png

Property the body was found at is on Kościelna 5 street, and the former 'Alcatraz' club - on Główna 7A street. Here's a sketch of the crime scene, hard to read, though.

Drone view on this household today:

Former Alcatraz club:

Due to the angles, snow and changes over the years, I had problems figuring out what is where in that crime scene video. Also, the sketch of the crime scene is unclear, looks like the barn is drawn as a one building with that right behind it. It's not, you can see it in the video, e.g. around 7;52. You can see there how the other building's wall is aligned, just like in the drone view.

Descriptions of the injuries were often scattered in the sources I've found. One mentioned that the exact description of the injuries spanned over a few pages. I don't know whether it was an overexaggeration. Instead of a wall of text, have the most important parts listed. Keep in mind that it's simplified and the exact medical terms could be different.

  1. There are multiple body parts mentioned, on which there were single scratches or abrasions of the epidermis and bruises (ecchymoses?) - either bloody or not. I.e. face, upper arms, chest, pelvic area, lower back, buttocks, legs (without precizing, apart from right thigh, check point 3).

  2. Scratches or abrasions in the chest area and on right arm, which pattern looked like a bite marks.

  3. On a right thigh, there was a bloody abrasion in a pattern similar to a shoe print. It was specifically described as an assault boot or other heavy ones (like in police or military).

  4. Some pubic hair ripped out, leaving bloody spots.

  5. Rupture of soft tissues between the vagina and rectum. Its extent (like in cm from the either opening) wasn't mentioned. It caused a severe internal bleeding.

  6. Extensive bloody bruisings (ecchymoses) and a rupture of the vaginal mucous membrane. Also, a bruisings of the mucous membrane and wall of the rectum, and a rupture of a rectal mucous membrane.

  7. Injuries were inflicted with a blunt or blunt-edged objects, including ones in the genital area. It could include fingers or a hand (fist).

  8. The victim could have been dragged across the ground, possibly it's when the clothes and shoes were taken off.

  9. Samples were taken from the oral cavity, vagina, and rectum. No samples were taken from under the nails, even though there were clearly signs of struggle, and the victim was probably trying to fight back or defend herself.

Few remarks on the crime scene.

  1. On the victim's face, chest and arms, there were a greyish, earthy stains, and on her cheek and mouth - dried smudge (color not mentioned).

  2. In her hair, there were entangled 'large quantities of' dried plant stalks, sticks, pieces of bark, and a single feathers (probably from the poultry), and pieces of the silver chain.

  3. Black tights were 1,5 m from the body, and partially torn blouse - 2,5 m from the body.

  4. On the back of the barn, around 2,5 m from the back corner, there was an oblong spot on the ground with thinner snow layer, in which were traces of grass / soil substrate and bloody stains.

  5. Around 1 m from the spot mentioned above, closer to the barn, there were faeces. Close to them, a Q&Q analog watch was found, and a shoelace next to it.

  6. Two empty vodka bottles and a black lace hanky were found 'close to the crime scene'.

  7. 1,2 to 1,5 m up on the barn's wall, close to where body was found, hair were found stuck on planks and between them.

  8. Close to the hair found on the barn's wall, there were smudges containing pieces of soil, sand, straw, grass and hair fragments.

  9. Victim's shoes and silver jewelry wasn't found both on the crime scene and on neighbouring properties (including houses and the maintenance rooms).

Józef R. was confused about the body found (below is a photo of the exact spot). He claimed that someone who left it there must have been local, as a stranger wouldn't know about this shortcut. A classic 'but...' - but he was living here since a child, and thought that no criminals or rapists able to do this were living in the area.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/vkx88o01.png

It's not clear for how long Małgosia was dying, and the given values are contradicting. I assume it's expected when they're based on different exams. The widest span mentioned was 1 to 8 hours. However, another source states that the victim could have been saved if medical intervention took place up to 2 or 3 hours after she was left alone. According to the expert witness, the perpetrators were either motivated by sadistic tendencies, or by their sexual incapability. The latter scenario was more common, and, quoting: 'a brutal treatment of the assaulted woman, including the possibility of taking her life, can be - and quote often is - caused by the temporary sexual incapability, usually being a result of the alcohol influence and a stress caused by the given situation'. I haven't seen a mention of how the roles could look like, considering there were at least 2 or 3 assailants.

⠀JUST A WALL OF TEXT ABOUT SOME TESTIMONIES... :marseyschizowall:

The description of the injuries is far easier to write than how Małgosia even left the club, according to the witnesses. Two of them, Krzysztof K. and Andrzej W. (whose credibility is vague) claimed that she was walked out by Irek, who told them he's her brother. She didn't have a brother. It's unclear whether it was 100% the same Irek as later convicted Ireneusz M., assuming it did happen. The other witnesses point out that it was Krzysztof K. who left with her... And you will see later he is both important and not fully reliable witness. Around 0;20 AM, friends of Małgosia (not precized how many of them) had seen her last time. Reportedly, at this time, she was already spending time with Krzysztof K., a local guy, whom she met in the club first time. They'd left outside 3 or 4 times, as Małgosia was feeling nauseous and started vomiting. Iwona, a 'main' friend coming with her, noticed that Małgosia disappeared around 1;00 AM, and started to look for her. Nobody knew where she is, and Iwona left the club after taking the girl's coat from the cloakroom. She was last time seen between 1;00 AM and 1;20 AM, leaving the club without the overcoat, only wearing dress. Reportedly, that's when Krzysztof K. left with her - he claims it was some Irek, claiming to be Małgosia's brother. These two moved towards the building's corner, on the Główna street side. According to Krzysztof K. himself, it was an hour earlier than the others had stated.

Krzysztof K. was arrested three days after the murder. He was considered a suspect, and his testimonies were - putting it shortly - both weirdly accurate (like he had seen the crime himself) and variable. He was beaten on a police station, too. At first, Krzysztof K. admitted to walking Małgosia out from the club, then entering the R. family property with her, undressing the girl and assaulting her. In the meanwhile, she was resisting, calling her mum and screaming to leave her alone; after all, Krzysztof K. reportedly moved her to another spot near the barn. His sketch of the crime scene was weirdly accurate. Then, he changed testimonies to the scenario with some Irek walking her out. And changed them again later. There was reportedly no evidence on-spot, including the DNA tests results (the old ones, though) excluding him. After one of the questionings, he ended up in hospital with brain concussion. The main prosecutor, same one responsible for the murder investigation, refused to start the investigation on the authority abuse. A police officer had just hit 16 yo Krzysztof K. on the back of the head 'in the heat of the moment', and the harm to society wasn't great enough to care.

Another photo than in the thumbnail, to break this wall of text :marseywink:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/bkqu6itp.png

Around 1;35 AM (sometimes an earlier time is given), one of the R. family's neighbours' daughters heard girl screaming Mum, mum! (assumed by the prosecution to be Małgosia). It was Agnieszka N., the same daughter, who after midnight left for a while with her boyfriend. They drove to Jelcz-Laskowice, to visit friends and wish them a happy New Year. Shortly after their departure, her sister Krystyna N. had seen two guys, between whom was walking a girl around 16-17 yo, weirdly lightly clothed as for the freezing cold. She specifically mentioned that these were two men and a girl looking down. Krystyna N. had in general given weirdly detailed description. Agnieszka N., who was in the car (so much closer to these group), claimed that she wasn't even sure how many people were there, and couldn't tell their gender. This group was walking along the Ogrodowa street. According to Krystyna N., looking through the window 7 to 10 m from these people, one guy was about the girl's height. The second one was slightly taller and had a bowl cut. Andrzej W. claimed that the man picking Małgosia up as 'her brother' had a bowl cut. I will spare you more details, just know that Andrzej W. claimed it was before midnight (so when people were either watching the fireworks or rushing home to do so) - contrary to the other witnesses - and his testimonies were in general inconsistent. And why was the haircut important, apart from connecting the non-existent brother with one of the guys walking the girl along the Ogrodowa street? Neither of these guys was wearing a cap. On a crime scene, there was a black cap found. If these were the future perpetrators walking with the girl, then - considering it was around -16 C or 3 F outside - it would be odd for them to not wear a cap, if they had one.

Apart from Agnieszka N., there was also unprecized P., who had heard some girl calling for help. Time wasn't given exactly, and the distance from his home to the R. family's property was around 100 m. P. thought that it must had been Józef R. beating at least one daughter, so didn't react. Apart from the N. family, there was also C. family living right next to the property where the murder took place. Surprisingly, no one from this family heard any screams or other sounds of struggle.

⠀HOW TO MAKE A KILLER ON PAPER :marseyretard2:

Tomasz Komenda was born in July 1976. He had a poor health, due to being born prematurely. According to the mother, Teresa Klemańska, it was because of the physical abuse by her ex-husband, Jerzy, whom he left when pregnant. Father-in-law, Mirosław, is described as a man raising Tomasz like his own son. Tomasz has finished special school, receiving primary education. He was working at the car wash, enjoying and often getting tips. There are three brothers: youngest Krzysztof, then Piotr (6 yo when Tomasz was imprisoned) and Gerard (the oldest one).

⠀POLICE SKETCH :marseycrayoneater:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/sw5ld54x.jpg

In 1999, the authorities were contacted by Dorota P., who claimed that she recognizes the man from the police sketch. There are few versions - some say media, some say newspaper, and other mention that she saw it in Magazyn Kryminalny 997 and contacted the police few days later. This couldn't happen, MK 997 never described this case. I spent a while searching for this episode, which was reportedly aired when she was throwing a party because of her name day. There are four dates to choose from, from the early February to the early September. None of the episodes matching them mention Komenda. Later, I've found out in one source that Dorota indeed made up this story. TV series mentioning this case was Telewizyjne Biuro Śledcze (episode 30, from 1998), there were no graphic details, too. According to Komenda's mother, Dorota P. once threatened her with 'doing something that would make her cry, so she remembers'. She was often leaving her son to babysit, and Komenda's mother complained it's too often. Even though Dorota P. claimed she knew Tomasz, that he had a girlfriend named Małgosia of the similar age (and also living in Jelcz-Laskowice), and that he was sometimes aggressive, she couldn't really know him well. They could at last see each other on the staircase, as Dorota P. was a neighbour of Komenda's grandmother. She claimed years later that she has 'only' pointed at him, and the man from police sketch could be as well his brother or father-in-law. Miłoszyce residents were questioned, but none of them recognized either of these three men - contrary to what Dorota P. said. She suddenly died in June 2018 and didn't manage to testify in a case regarding authority abuse.

Tomasz Komenda was questioned first time on 16th of November 1999, when the police search was conducted in his home, starting from 7;15 AM. On 18th of April 2000, he was already questioned as a suspect - this is sometimes incorrectly mentioned as the first hearing. When Komenda was questioned, he didn't even know there's a town called Jelcz-Laskowice. He admitted to having an intercourse with some randomly met girl, in a wood patch near the club - but there was no wood patch. Few people, including his mother and one woman not called for a witness, claimed that he spent New Year's Eve 1996/1997 in the family home.

So, to sum up what didn't match in Komenda's testimonies (on various times):

  1. Consensual intercourse in a non-existent woodpatch,

  2. Visiting a town that he didn't know existed.

  3. Taking a bus from Plac Grunwaldzki (go back to the cities map) to Gajków on New Year's Eve 1996/1997, when no buses were going on this route.

  4. Timeline that would require time travel. It was impossible for Tomasz to leave home around 2 AM and be back between 6;00 and 6;30 AM, if things went as described (next paragraph).

  5. He 'did' that all in Miłoszyce, while 12 witnesses provided him alibi for that night, which he spent in Wrocław. Somehow they were not convincing. The only guest that saw Komenda home back then and didn't drink alcohol wasn't called as a witness.

  6. He was also sentenced to 4 years for raping Bożena (go back to the first section). He didn't recognize her, and the second rapist (playing her 'rescuer') didn't recognize Tomasz as the first assailant.

About the timeline. In 'his' testimonies, Tomasz 'claimed' he left home around 2 AM, took the bus to Gajków (to visit his friend, Tomasz S.), and arrived around 3 AM. Then this friend told Komenda about a New Year's Eve party in the club in Miłoszyce, and they two walked there for around 30 mins. Here's why this timeline's impossible - it's around 8 km (5 mil) in straight line, and 10-12 km in a walking distance. Two guys finishing 10K in 30 mins - during a winter night and while being drunk - would for sure put them among the elite runners. Around 30 mins (or few mins less, depends on the criteira) are the current world records for 10K. According to the 'official' timeline, Tomasz S. had spent half an hour in the club, and left Tomasz Komenda alone. That would mean he left at unknown time, but after 4;00 AM. Then, Komena would meet some 'Kasia', accompany her till the club closing - it closed around 4;30 AM - and have an intercourse outside on the ground, in a non-existent woodpatch. Then, he 'walked' back to Gajków, and travelled back to Wrocław by the bus, arriving between 6 AM and 6;30 AM.

Why did he change initial testimonies to the above story?

In the record of evidence from 16th of November 1999, I didn't describe the above-mentioned circumstances [as a witness], because I was afraid of the police. I can't explain this, I am simply afraid of the police.

And:

Later, Tomasz Komenda withdrew his testimonies and claimed, that he was never in Miłoszyce and didn't know any Małgorzata K. He claimed that he was forced to say so by [the cops] beating him. He had been mentioning this beatings multiple times, even saying in front of the cameras in 2006, that he was beaten so heavily, that he would even confess to murdering a Pope, if it would make them stop.

It wasn't mentioned in the quoted testimonies, but in the second book mentioned in the sources at the end, the author claims that 'staying till the end' (in the club) meant staying till the 6 AM, maybe 7 AM. I don't know why it's stated so. I think that the author could assume, that by 'staying till the end' Komenda meant 'stayed till the morning'. In the common sense, indeed, winter mornings are rather around 6 or 7 AM, not precizely 4;30 AM, and partying till the morning would mean club closed around given hours.

Not only does this timeline make no sense (and these testimonies, obtained under duress), but also joining them with the testimonies of Tomasz S. Who, by the way, wasn't Komenda's friend, but his employer. He claimed that he didn't meet Komenda that day. Nobody looked for this Kasia, apparently assuming, that the unknown Katarzyna - having a consensual intercourse with one man - must have been Małgorzata - assaulted and left for death by 2 or 3 men. I will skip the rest of the testimonies, sometimes making it better, sometimes worse for Komenda, as together with the screwed up investigation, that's actually a topic for a whole book.

It's also worth mentioning that the Krzysztof K. mentioned some time ago was considered by the specialists to not be a reliable witness, due to the mental state he was in. Authorities didn't have a similar problem with Tomasz Komenda, who had finished special school and has a mild degree of intellectual disability. Both guys were beaten by the cops, too, and in both cases it officially didn't happen. Last part of this section is the other evidence :marseyretardnotes:

  1. DNA was extracted from the hair, stuck inside a black woolen cap found on the crime scene (for reference, Komenda's blood was used). Polymarker tests were conducted. They focus on specific DNA sequences (markers), which are long and poorly differentiated. Even back then, it wasn't a modern method. It shouldn't be used both when analyzing a sample from hair and when it's not sure whether the evidence comes from one person or more. It was analyzed in Wrocław. Three years later, it suddenly turned out that in Jelcz-Laskowice police station, there were more hair kept as an evidence, but sent to Bydgoszcz (not Wrocław) for analyzis. This time, it was mtDNA analyzis, which was pointless, and could only check whether the victim's and witnesses' or suspects' had the same mother. It was pointless, especially considering that this evidence was destroyed, so couldn't be use later for more meaningful testing.

  2. Osmological expertise, using the scent samples obtained from the mentioned woolen cap, checked by two dogs in March 2000. This wasn't recorded, even though videotaping such exams was reportedly already a common practice back then. The method used for sampling wasn't strictly matching the police guidelines. The dog handler was reportedly licensed, but not an expert. It's also unknown in what conditions the cap and samples were kept. Jars containing the scent-soaked swabs were also opened and closed again 'multiple times'.

  3. Bite marks. Shortly saying, the pattern could match Tomasz Komenda or someone else. The latter scenario was overlooked. Among the 'someone else' was also Marcin Ł., a son of local businessman, who was 'unofficially' mentioned by a few witnesses (including the incognito witness), and he will be mentioned in the next section again. Back then, it was excluded that the pattern could belong to Ireneusz M., who is currently convicted for this murder. Why it's not excluding him now, it's not known.

The charges differed from what Tomasz Komenda was sentenced to 15 years for, and what was he lated sentenced to 25 years for. They also differ from what he was told he will be tried for. Have Wikipedia quote first (article about Polish Penal Code):

Three different types of homicide are foreseen by articles 148, 149 and 150 of the Code. Article 148 Sec. 1 describes the penalty for the basic type of the crime. It is penalized by no less than 8 years of imprisonment, 25 years' imprisonment or life imprisonment. Sections 2 and 3 introduce a more strict sentencing in cases of particular cruelty, using firearms or explosives, taking hostages, raping, robbery, multiple victims or relapse. In these cases the minimal imprisonment period rises to 12 years.

Tomasz Komenda was at first for rape with exceptional cruelty and for battery resulting in death. I'm not sure if anything similar exists in US or UK laws. Either battery or aggravated battery applies to the situations where there was no intent to kill or death (AFAIK, please correct in the comments if this is bullshit). In Poland, there's pobicie ze skutkiem śmiertelnym, which is a different crime than homicide (falls under Article 158 - battery).

In October 2001, Tomasz Komenda was told he will be tried for Article 197, Sec.1. In November 2003, he was sentenced in relation to Article 197, Sec. 2. Reportedly, he was told that the exact qualification of his crime may be changed, but no more details. Apart from homicide, he was sentenced for rape - Article 197, Sec. 3, not precized further, but it'd be Sec. 3, Point 1 (together with another person - which, like you already know, police didn't look for). Małgosia was exactly 15 years and (nearly) 2 months old when she died. In Poland, the age of consent is 15 yo, so technically this rape didn't qualify as raping a child (or: minor under 15 yo). In June 2004, the sentence was raised to 25 years.

⠀OLD EVIDENCE, OLD SURNAMES, NEW SUSPECTS :marseyfacepalm:

Currently, two people are serving time for the rape and homicide - mainly the latter, as rape has already fallen under the statute of limitations. I guess you won't be surprised. It could have been one that walked Małgosia out the club. It's not 100% clear whether it was the same Irek, though - only two witnesses claimed so. The second one convicted for now was a club guard and a barman that night. Both the police and prosecution assume there was a third perpetrator, but no arrests were made as for now.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/a52im84s.png

Ireneusz Matuszak (becoming a suspect in June 2017, charges brought in December 2018) was, at the time of the arrest, already serving time for a sexual assault. He was convicted over time for 5 rapes on three different women. They're described as women 'he was providing for' (in what way - not specified) and they've been having consensual intercourses, too. He told one of the journalist he didn't do it and why he even knows about the charges (reply: because of getting access to the case files). About the murder in Miłoszyce, same. He didn't allow the media to show his face and release the full name. The detail pointing at him was his mention of the socks Małgosia was wearing. According to the prosecution, if she was wearing black tights over the socks, someone who didn't undress her shouldn't notice them. The ultimate proof is claimed to be the DNA test results. Some testimonies may point at him. But if all the witnesses were telling the truth, then their testimonies can't form a meaningful story.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/pwcwn45p.png

Norbert Basiura was, at the time of the arrest, living a typical life. He has a wife, who believes in his innocence, one child, and was working as a firefighter. His attitude is the opposite of the first convict. Both claim they're innocent, but Norbert allowed for the media to both show face and use full name, and was very talkative and open. According to some - suspiciously open. Videos you can find online include him testifying, interviews, scenes with his wife, even driving with one news reporter across Miłoszyce and looking for the right household. Norbert claimed he had no idea which house this was, exactly, just roughly knowing its location. He was sober during that New Year's Eve, unlike Ireneusz. In 1997, when still considered a witness, Norbert was threatened by both the police and some undefined people. He told Małgosia's father about it, and (no date was given) mentioned him three men as important in this case. One of them was Marcin Ł., a son of local businessman, who was reportedly also thought to be involved by a few others Miłoszyce residents.

Initially, they were both sentenced to 25 years. For Norbert Basiura, it was changed to 15 years. Reportedly, the sperm samples were found on the victim's clothing, coming from both of the current convicts. Blood samples from both of them were also found. At least that's what DNA tests results say. In case of Norbert Basiura, the evidence is described as 'extremely strong', and in case of Ireneusz Matuszak, 'very strong' (strong as 'convincing').

⠀THE ACQUITTAL :marseywholesome:

Tomasz Komenda was let out on parole on 15th of March 2018, and acquitted on 16th of May 2018. Right in the beginning, you can see the reactions to declaring him innocent:

Another angle:

Here is a fragment on how Tomasz was transported, at the time when it was already known that the 'second suspect' was arrested (while Tomasz formally was still the first one).

[...] When [he was] driving into Wrocław, he couldn't recognize his city. When the prison cell doors closed behind him, there were no shopping malls, which now [car] was passing one by one. The monumental Sky Tower was also a novelty. Before he was jailed, skyscrapers didn't extend 100 m of height, even in Warsaw, and this one reached above 200 m. Every few kilometers, there was a petrol station. He only remembered CPN, but its logo was replaced by new names long ago. Pendolino going through the train overpass was nearly jaw-dropping. Tomasz had only seen such vehicles in sci-fi movies, when he was a free man. And the mobile phone, from which on regular speaker said: "Turn right 150 m ahead, then keep going straight. You've reached your destination". Tomek didn't know what was going on around, even though his mother and brothers were telling him that the world has been changing much. He has only seen innovations in TV. The old PlayStation 3 and FIFA, which he was playing in the evenings outside the prison cell, was all his modern technology.

Explanations: CPN, Centrala Produktów Naftowych, was a company operating between 1945 and 1999. SkyTower's height is 212 m in total. For Tomasz, it was one of the favorite spots in 'new' Wrocław, apart from the terraced housing around the main square, all renovated.

About the Lexi Bonner video.

Perhaps a clarification is in order for the previous post. Please forgive @FishyMan420, he's still new to WPD modding. Have some patience for him to acclimate please. :marseyxoxo:

If you don't know what the Lexi Bonner video is, tl;dr it's a kid getting beaten up by a teen (purportedly named Lexi Bonner) while he's screaming and crying throughout. It's pretty bad, and I've seen some serious shit.

This video isn't banned because we're moralstragging about what you should/shouldn't watch here. Simply put, the final part of rule 4 was put there to curb specific videos focusing on explicit, deliberate abuse and great suffering of small children. This is in place because there's a startlingly large contingent of people that get off to this sort of stuff. We've had issues with these sorts of people in the beginning of the site, and they specifically congregated around this type of content. These are the last kinds of people we want to deal with, and as such, we decided that banning this content was the best move. There's better content here than a kid crying and screaming while getting beaten by bullies anyway, but if you're the kind of person who has a very... keen interest in these sort of videos and that's why you want it so much, then why don't you have a seat over there? :hansen: Ignore the woodchipper, it's for decoration.

P.S. don't dox people either. Even if they're objective pieces of shit who beat kids, it's something that opens us up to way too much liability.

Background

The 2001 Sampit conflict was not an isolated incident, as there had been several previous incidents between Dayaks and Madurese. The last major conflict occurred between December 1996 and January 1997 which resulted in over 600 deaths. The first Madurese arrived in Kalimantan in 1930 under the transmigration program launched by the Dutch colonial government and continued by the Indonesian government. In 2000, transmigrants made up 21% of Central Kalimantan's population. The Dayak tribe is dissatisfied with the competition that continues to come from the increasingly aggressive Madurese. The new laws have allowed Madurese to gain control over many of the province's commercial industries such as logging, mining and plantations.

There are a number of stories explaining the 2001 riot incident. One version claims that this was caused by an arson attack on a Dayak house. Rumor has it that this fire was caused by Madurese and then a group of members of the Dayak tribe started burning houses in the Madurese settlement. KMA Usop of the Dayak People's Association claimed that the massacres by the Dayaks were carried out in self-defence after some of their members were attacked. In addition, it is also said that a Dayak was tortured and killed by a group of Madurese after a gambling dispute in Kerengpangi village on 17 December 2000.

Another version claims that this conflict originated from a fight between students of different races in the same school.

The Infamous Duckpack51 Video (@mayengg03)

The video originated on a now-deleted Blogspot page titled Duckpack51. The video was first uploaded by the user Mayengg03 on TikTok, who was banned after he uploaded the video. During the video's release, the TikTok moderators have tried their best to investigate who's behind the video.

At first, the video depicted a girl dancing to the song "Dick" by Starboy3, and then cut to the execution footage of a 19-year-old Mexican criminal Rodolfo Belluci, who began his criminal career at age 15. The video took place in what appears to be either a shower stall or locker room. Throughout the video, the executors taunt Belluci in Spanish, including with the words "puto" and "pillo", which are usually for males. They do not fully behead him in the video.

After Rodolfo Bellucci was murdered, he had his corpse scattered across Cuernavaca, Morelos. The execution took place in February 2019, and the video went viral in 2021 after it was uploaded to TikTok

CHILD WARNING EFFORTPOST Rorochan_1999 || Suicide livestream of a 14 year old girl

Who is she?

Rorochan_1999 was the online alias of a 14 year old girl, who seemed to struggle with a variety of mental health issues, and she appeared to be quite lonely. She started livestreaming on platforms such as FC2, Niconico, TwitCast, and Ustream in 2012. She would do a variety of things like studying, singing, dancing and playing the piano and is even rumored to have streamed herself running in the middle of traffic, avoiding speeding cars or standing on the edge of tall height buildings. There were many implications of neglect, so she used the internet to escape. She lived a double life of being a normal middle school girl, to being a streamer behind closed doors, family and friends unknowing.

Archive 1: Livestream from Nov 1, 2013

The video starts with her playing "Rudolph the red nosed reindeer" on the piano. She plays a variety of different notes, some are even disturbing to listen to, hearing the distress in the way she played. According to a native Japanese speaker in the comments of an analysis video of the situation, Roro was singing a song from the anime Minky Momo, an anime knowing for a dark ending where the protagonist died via a car crash despite it being a kids show. Rorochan_1999 had the character as her profile picture. After she sings the song from the anime, she appears to read the comments of the livestream and then shortly after have a mental breakdown. She seems to be repeating the word "daite" over and over while laughing or crying. "Daite" directly translates to hug/hold me, however with the Japanese language, context of situations change the meaning of things said. While it is speculated she was repeating "mother, hold me", that same native Japanese speaker discussed what she was saying toward the end was actually likely to be sexual in nature. She had purposely labeled her livestreams sexually as well.

Archive 2: Livestream, unknown date

In the video, she has a bag over her head to hide her face. She is seen recording herself in a mirror and wearing a robe while whispering things. She is seen hyperventilating and swinging her head furiously around the camera in a disturbing strange manner.

Her final and suicide livestream : "暗黒" November 24th, 2013

At 2:44 in the video, she stands on a trashcan, and is about to jump. We see the very tall fall in front of her. She throws her phone as she jumps. We are not able to see her jump off, but you can hear the loud sound of her hitting the ground shortly after.

Nobody saw Rorochan jump. She had jumped around 3 am, and was discovered by a female newspaper carrier within 5-10 minutes. Her body was still warm and her body was still fully in tact, her mask was hanging from one ear, one shoe was on the ground next to her. Police arrived within 5 minutes and she was pronounced dead at the hospital about 3 hours later. She did not leave a note.
I researched for hours and both fortunately and unfortunately, her name was never publicly available due to her age, and is heavily debated about online. I think it may be for best that we are not aware of her name, for the protection and wellbeing of her family. However she has been referred to as "A". There was no implications that she was bullied, a female student who she was close with said "I don't know why she committed suicide so suddenly" and students from her school said there was no signs of trouble presented otherwise.

Livestream participants after she jumped.

Livestream chat logs from the stream. She had jumped in between images 10-11.
Unfortunately there were many sick individuals in some of these chat logs that were speaking sexually to her, asking her to flash, asking her to go back to her room to preform NSFW activities and more. The things that were said are truly sick.

She often stated in past livestreams or on websites such as 2chan that she wanted to "become a legend". She discussed her plans and how she wanted her death to be unexpected out of a girl like her.

The rising popularity of this case

On Jan 8, 2020 a music video was released with the title, "Shinsei Kamattechan - Ruru's Suicide Show on a Livestream Official Video (Animation)" was released. "Ruru" is the character presented in the music video, the translated lyrics consist of talking about suicide, and how the internet destroyed her. It is unclear whether or not the song is dedicated to Rorochan or not, but it is a song dedicated to suicide victims in general.

After this song rose in popularity, the case of Rorochan's suicide was publicized and brought up again. She did in fact, "become a legend". Other than her vague postings about it, her motives are unclear as to why she committed suicide. Rest in peace, Rorochan.

EFFORTPOST Helium Suicides: A thread of 15 different cases ! :marseybow:

Helium, classified among inert gases, poses a risk of physical asphyxiation due to its ability to diminish the partial pressure of oxygen in the breathing atmosphere, potentially resulting in fatality after brief exposure. In scenarios where individuals inhale a mix of inert gases (such as helium, nitrogen, or argon) with a minimal oxygen component and the ability to expel carbon dioxide, subjects may not perceive typical suffocation warning signs. The ease of access to necessary equipment, coupled with the absence of discomfort, pain, and rapid effects, has led to the utilization of inert gases for suicidal purposes.

:marseyballoon3:

The emergence of "suicide bags" or "exit bags" was first reported in the 1990s. These kits consist of a plastic bag affixed with a drawstring, connected to tubing carrying an inert gas like helium, nitrogen, or argon. Prolonged breath-holding in such a scenario induces dyspnea, caused by elevated carbon dioxide partial pressure in the blood. However, in cases where individuals can breathe freely, expelling carbon dioxide but encountering oxygen deficiency in a mixture containing an inert gas, the body does not trigger an alarm response. Consequently, suicides involving inert gas inhalation typically lack dyspnea and panic associated with consciousness loss.

:marseyballoon:

Helium is the predominant choice for suicidal asphyxiation, recognized as generally harmless to the human body. Nevertheless, as it competes with oxygen in the bloodstream, it can lead to central nervous system (CNS) hypoxia, posing lethal risks. Inhaling gas mixtures with higher helium concentrations may result in symptoms such as dizziness, balance issues, and loss of consciousness. A mere minute of inhaling helium can initiate CNS damage, with unconsciousness occurring within approximately five breaths when using a plastic bag. Death may ensue after about 13 minutes (within a range of 2–40 minutes).

:marseyballoon3:

Incidents involving the discovery of a body with a plastic bag on the head are often attributed to suicide, with homicides and accidents being rare. If a plastic bag, accompanied by a cylinder containing helium or another inert gas, is found at the scene, it is highly probable that the deceased intentionally took their own life.

:marseyballoon:

Individuals grappling with suicidal thoughts are strongly encouraged to reach out to their local hotline for immediate support and assistance.

Lets start, shall we? :marseysmug2:

Fig.5 Case 4. A plastic bag was placed over the dead man's head and taped around his neck. A thin, transparent plastic tube led into this bag, the mouth of which protruded into the bag and was fixed there with the same type of insulating tape. The other end was attached to the gas bottle valve. According to investigations, the deceased had been depressed for years and also had financial difficulties. A separation with his long-term partner recently took place.

Fig.6 Case 5. Germany. The information provided by the deceased's employer led to the 34-year-old's body being found in his apartment. Two gas-inflated plastic rubbish bags that were pulled together at the neck were placed over the man's head, from which a hose led via a "T" valve to two helium gas bottles on a side table. The body was properly clothed and in a seated position on the living room couch. The relatives had not known anything about suicidal intentions. However, a suicide note was found on his laptop, as well as a bill for two 22.5 liter bottles of helium balloon gas, which was in the name of the deceased.

Fig.7 Case 6. Germany. A 31-year-old man was found dead in his room in a therapeutic community for the mentally ill after not being seen by his caregiver for four days. The body was in a reclining, sitting position on a chair. The clothes were orderly; there was no indication of external violence. A plastic rubbish bag was pulled over his head and held in place with thin household rubber. A helium gas container (22.5 l) stood on the floor, to which a plastic hose was attached using adhesive tape. The valve was not fully closed. The deceased had already repeatedly expressed intentions to commit suicide. A suicide attempt by taking pills in the previous year was known. He was no longer able to practice his profession due to his mental illness (recurrent depressive disorder, schizophrenia).

Fig.8 Case 7. This death occurred in September 2000, in South Carolina. The deceased was a 60-year-old white woman with a diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma that had spread to the eye, causing double vision. She had a history of depression and had previously made one sui- cide attempt. Her husband discovered her on the living room floor approximately 2 hours after she was last seen alive. She wore a surgical mask over her face, and a clear plastic bag was secured over her head. Waterproof padding had been placed under her buttocks to protect the floor from possible incontinence. Next to her body was an industrial refillable tank labeled “helium.” A clear plastic hose was attached to the tank valve and led to the plastic bag. Also at the scene were the book Final Exit, Final Exit: The Video, and the Spring 2000 Hemlock Society Newsletter, which included an article on helium and plastic bag suicide. [Colorized]

Fig.15 Case 13. A 26-year-old man was found dead lying in his car (keys in the ignition, one window opened slightly). One hand lay near a closed helium-gas cylinder valve, and a plastic bag connected by polypropylene tube was put over his head and fixed with a rubber band.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/8do3diuh.jpg

Fig.16 Case 13. The victim was depressed and had recently looked for information about euthanasia online. Despite the fact that no suicide note was found and that no history of suicide was noted, it was assumed, given the scene, that helium-assisted asphyxiation may have been the cause of death.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/73z7bhz.jpg

Fig.17 Case 14. The corpse of an approximately 30-year-old male was found in a hotel room. The man was found with a gas-filled bag placed over his head and sealed with a tape around the neck. A disposable helium tank and its packaging were discovered near the bed. Tanks of this type are available in many conventional and online stores. The room showed no signs of ransacking or struggle; instead, a suicide note was found.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/78g543s2.jpg

Fig.18 Case 15. A 28-year-old man with a clinical history of paranoid hallucinatory schizophrenia was found dead in his flat sitting in a chair with a plastic bag over his head, the bag being sealed at the neck with duct tape. Next to his body was a 10 liter tank of balloon helium connected to the plastic bag with plastic tubing. His mouth contained frothy white edema fluid. A suicide note found at the scene mentioned his illness as the principal reason for his suicide. No right-to-die-literature was found. [Colorized]
