I was scrolling way way through watchpeopledie when an amazing post on vintage crime scenes by @GORYEET had wondered across my eyes, and I noticed Lizzie Borden's axe murders, but was only provided with one picture. I thought it'd be interesting to create a post based on who Lizzie was, and what she did to her father and stepmother. (Allegedly)

SUMMARY;

On August 4th, 1892...Abby and Andrew Borden were both found deceased in their homes, the couple was brutally attacked and murdered, Abby Borden was found upstairs in the guest bedroom with the autopsy revealing 19 blows that shattered her skull, and Andrew Borden was found slouched over on a couch downstairs in the families sitting room, autopsy also revealed he was struck 10-11 times by an axe, or hatchet.

BACKGROUND; It was a hot Tuesday, early afternoon after Andrew had made his rounds to the bank, as well as making other stops, seeing his wife Abby that morning. The Borden's maid, who was identified as Bridget Sullivan who was up in the third floor during the murders, resting, told the court she heard Lizzie Borden hysterically calling for her around 11 o'clock and repeating "Maggie! Maggie! Come down quick, Father's dead!" As the police arrived, and searched the downstairs area, Lizzie was receiving comfort from a woman named Adelaide Churchill, when she discovered Abby Borden's cold body, sunken skull, and a bloody mess on the second floor. When investigators found Abby Borden compared to finding Andrew, Abby was colder, assuming her attack came first, then the attack on Andrew Borden occurred a little while after...He had been found warm. Speculation rose about a tall man striking Abby Borden from the behind, but... Two days after the murder, Lizzie Borden came into the picture as the prime suspect for the grisly murder of her parents, she was 33 at the time. A clerk at a drugstore reported that a few days before the murders, Lizzie came in trying to buy prussic acid, a deadly posion. It was also suggested that Lizzie and Abby had a very poor relationship, often fighting with eachohter but had a "normal" relationship. As time went on, the speculation of Lizzie Borden being the one responsible, her sister Emma, was not present or even home at all during the murders. Police say it had to be someone in the home. When investiagting the timeline of everything, they found it bizzare how Lizzie knew little to nowhere abouts of her mother after 9am, when Lizzie was allegedly upstairs to go put sham on the pillows, as well as noting how 15 minutes after the attack on Andrew Borden, Lizzie went out to the yard to look for "irons" in the barn. Lizzie was arrested on the murder of Andrew and Abby Borden, but plead "Not Guilty" to the charges.

LIZZIE'S TRIAL;

On June 5th, 1893 in New Bedford Courthouse before a panel of 3 judges, and a jury of 12 men, Lizzie Borden's trial had begun. Starting off with the prosecutor, William Moody, presenting the state's case. During his speech, Moody carelessly threw Lizzie's blue dress on the table, revealing the skulls of Lizzie's parents, Andrew and Abby Borden. This caused Lizzie to faint, shocking the spectators. Moody argued that Lizzie was the only person with both the motive and opportunity to commit the murders. He presented the head of an axe that he claimed Lizzie used to kill her parents. The prosecution's key witness was Bridget Sullivan, the family's maid, who testified that Lizzie was the only person she saw in the house at the time of the murders. However, other witnesses disputed Bridget's claim that Lizzie and her stepmother had a good relationship. The defense challenged the prosecution's timeline and evidence, suggesting it would have been impossible for Lizzie to commit the murders and clean up in the short time frame. They also pointed out that there was no physical evidence directly linking Lizzie to the crime. The judge's ruling that Lizzie's inquest testimony could not be used as evidence was a major blow to the prosecution. The defense also presented witnesses who claimed to have seen a strange man near the Borden house around the time of the murders. In the end, the defense argued that the state had failed to prove Lizzie's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The jury deliberated for an hour and a half before returning a verdict of "not guilty." Lizzie was acquitted of the murders.

AFTERMATH OF IT ALL; In my opinion, it's likely that Lizzie Borden did kill her parents, but the prosecution couldn't prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. The main argument was that no one else could have done it. However, the jury didn't think that, along with a few other suspicious things Lizzie did (like burning a dress), was enough to convict her. Some people think if Lizzie had been a man, the jury might have been more likely to find her guilty. One of the defense's advantages was that in 1893, most people had a hard time believing a woman of Lizzie's background could have committed such brutal murders. After the trial, Lizzie went back to live in Fall River. She and her sister Emma bought an impressive house on "the Hill." Lizzie lived in this house, called Maplecroft, until she died at age 67 in 1927. She was buried next to her parents' graves.

This was one of the first crime scenes to be photographed. Sadly, the victim was 6-year-old Clémentine pichon, murdered by a local teenager.

Before the advent of fingerprinting or criminal profiling, police departments around the world saw countless criminals slip through the cracks. That is until a French police officer named Alphonse Bertillon found an innovative way to do so. The work of Alphonse Bertillon was largely trounced by the introduction of fingerprint identification in the early 1900s. Nonetheless, his mugshot standard has remained virtually the same for the last 100-plus years.

Criminal identification for the Paris police department, developed the mug shot format and other photographic procedures used by police to register criminals. Although the images in this extraordinary album of forensic photographs were made by or under the direction of Bertillon, it was probably assembled by a private investigator or secretary who worked at the Paris prefecture. Photographs of the murder victims are assembled with views of the rooms where the murders took place, close-ups of objects that served as clues, and mug shots of criminals and suspects. Made as part of an archive rather than as art, these postmortem portraits, recorded in the deadpan style of a police report, nonetheless retain an unsettling potency. Among the traits Bertillon recorded was arm length, head length, and the distance between fingertips with arms outstretched.

Alphonse Bertillon the 'father of forensics', but really was given the proper name in 1954, the father of Scientific Detection.

Known also as the anthropometric system, criminal records also kept track of a suspect's height, ear size, foot size, arm length, eye color, skin tone, and any notable marks.

Within a few years, Bertillon's eponymous system allowed officers to scan their records by any category they desired — from foot size and hair color to birth marks and skin tone. He believed the evidence captured on film could serve officers during ongoing investigations. Taking photos also stopped officers from contaminating the scene.

Many of Bertillon's peers scoffed at the notion that photography would, in any way, help reduce the crime rate.

When Alphonse Bertillon joined the Prefecture of Police in Paris in 1879, the department had already collected 80,000 photographs of known criminals. They were captured under variable lighting, and at most, only accompanied by a name and address.

By 1883, Bertillon had collected 7,336 measurements and identified 49 repeat offenders. That figure reached 241 by the following year and kept growing as techniques got more practiced and more investigators began to started using Bertillon techniques.

It was a much more efficient system than the previous model, which forced police to rifle through stacks of photos with lacking details. Often heralded as the first forensic expert for his innovations, Alphonse Bertillon was also one of the first known people to identify a criminal by a fingerprint collected at a crime scene. He become well known individual within police and detective agencies while never working for then until Bertillon's father eventually got him work at the Paris police department, Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote in The Hound of Baskervilles that Holmes was "the second highest expert in Europe" — after Alphonse Bertillon. He also used compounds to preserve crime scene details like footprints. He also employed a dynamometer in his investigations, a tool which gauges just how much force was used in breaking into and entering a residence. Bertillon used floor grids to his advantage, standardizing their use in his crime scene photography to measure the size of victims and objects. He called this "metric photography.

Bertillon not only captured the crime scenes and corpses themselves, but made sure to collect exterior shots and views of the streets, alleys, and surrounding areas for his work.

A Louisiana couple on Monday pleaded no contest to reduced charges of manslaughter in the death of their daughter who was found “melted” into a sofa covered in maggots and human waste.

The emaciated remains of Lacey Fletcher, 36, were found at her family's home in Slaughter in January 2022. The room in which she was found stank of feces and urine, and the floor was buckling as a result of the pooling waste beneath the sofa, according to sources cited by WBRZ-TV.

Clay and Sheila Fletcher did not move 36-year-old Lacey Fletcher from the couch for 12 years and she was found “melted” into it, according to authorities. Coroner Dr. Ewell Dewitt Bickham III said Sheila Fletcher called 911 on Jan. 3, 2022, to report her daughter's death, but believes she died a day or two before.

The coroner described the scene as “appalling and horrific“ because of the condition of the body and the couch. She was found with rotted skin and her bones were exposed. It was also determined that starvation was one of the main causes of her death.

“Opened the door, walked into the house, there was a stench, an odor, feces, fecal material, urine, you couldn't hold your breath,” Bickham said.

Sheriff Jeffery Travis said the scene was “by far the worst” he had ever seen.

“The father was completely emotionless. The mother's head was lying down on, between her legs. She was weeping a little bit,” Bickham said.

Lacey Fletcher's parents were away on a weekend trip the weekend that she died, according to the coroner's office. The parents claimed their daughter had extreme social anxiety and autism, according to authorities.

“The conditions in which she was found, it's just unbelievable,” West Feliciana District Attorney Sam D'Aquilla said.

Bickham said medical records show that Lacey Fletcher did not have a primary care physician.

“In 2010, the parents went to a doctor's office without Lacey and asked his advice on what to do. She is increasingly not wanting to leave the house, not wanting to leave the sofa, just totally recluse,” Bickham said.

Bickham said the doctor told her parents to bring their daughter to the hospital, but she was never admitted and no treatment was provided.

“The message is if you have anyone in your family with a mental health condition or a disability, get help,” Bickham said.

Painkillers

Suicide through painkillers is when someone were to swallow a bunch of painkillers at once, or mix it with other painkillers intentionally. It is hard to link the same effects to every painkiller out there, so instead I will list off what happens with most painkilling suicides. As soon as the painkillers enter your body, you will already have trouble breathing, and this is only the beginning. After this takes effect, your stomach will start bleeding internally, and purfusely too, after this multiple organs will slowly (and painfully) die off as you try to survive. There a couple reasons you may die from overdosing on painkillers, but the most frequent causes are from internal bleeding, a complete stop in breathing, and organ failure.

Pesticide Suicide

A pesticide poisoning occurs when pesticides, chemicals intended to control a pest, affect non-target organisms such as humans. People take advantage of this, and that leads up to nearly 30% of all suicides. Right now in the U.S, it is very rare though, only accounting for 12 suicides a year. Through the organochlorine pesticides, like DDT, aldrin, and dieldrin accumulate in your fatty tissues. As this happens, you get pesticide poisoning. This already puts you at risk of long term neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and dementia. Cancer and kidney failure also starts to come into play during all of this. As these toxic chemicals cause onsets to your nerve cells, the body starts to shut down and you die.

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless and odorless gas. As you are exposed, you may feel confused, lost, dizzy, and chest pains. After long term exposure, you may experience loss of consciousness, arrhythmias, seizures, or death. Most death comes from hypoxia. Hypoxia is when you are deprived of adequate oxygen supply at the tissue level. Survivors ussualy experience memory loss.

Helium

Helium is a colorless and odorless inert gas similar to Carbon Monoxide and Nitrogen. Also similar to these 2, you die for the same reason. As your body tries to find oxygen, it can't. There is nothing but helium, as it digs for oxygen. You start to suffocate and you die from this lack of oxygen. You don't really feel like you're suffocating, unless Co2 is present. Acid

No I am not talking about LSD, I'm talking about sulfuric acid. I don't know if acid is really a chemical but I know it's intriguing and I want to add it. Anyway, once the victim has drank the sulfuric acid, immediate burning and sharp pain is present in the mouth. This then moves down to the throat, where a higher hole is created by the acid. The rest of the acid moves its way down to the stomach and causes extremely deadly amounts of internal bleeding. The victim dies from having the hole in their throat, or the acid melting through other key parts of the body needed to survive

This last section is gonna go into chemicals that are too short for a full section about them, so I will be making one big section out of them.

Suicide Bag: A suicide bag, also known as an exit bag or hood is a device consisting of a plastic bag with a drawcord used to die by suicide through inert gas asphyxiation. This inert gas is lighter than air, like helium, nitrogen, or CO.

Bleach: as you drink excessive bleach, you start to vomit purfusely, have a fatally low amount of blood pressure, and acute liver failure. If you want to see the affects, check this video out

Gas Oven Suicide: People commit suicide through their gas oven because of the chemicals it produces, like Carbon Monoxide.

Suicide Pill: This could be in the Painkiller section, but it contains more. A suicide pill can contain cyanide, fentanyl, or any other lethal substance than can fit in a pill.

18 year old girl from Honduras was allegedly found by her boyfriend when he arrived home early in the morning from working the night shift.

She had used a length of rope to hang herself and he told first responders that her body was still warm when he found her, so he cut her down hoping she could be saved. He was incorrect and she was pronounced dead when the rescue workers arrived.

According to him, she had climbed up on the table that they used for preparing meals and stepped off after securing the rope to an overhead ceiling beam.

Her family insisted that the boyfriend strangled her and faked the suicide and they lobbied multiple times from Honduras (the death occurred in Mexico, where she lived with her boyfriend) to have a second investigation done, but the police in Tapachula asserted that they had been thorough and that there was no indication of foul play. Her death was ruled a suicide.

My partner and I interviewed the boyfriend, one of the first responders, and two of the young woman's aunts in an effort to establish whether there was any actual likelihood of foul play. Unfortunately, the police would not release additional photos to us, so for visual analysis of the scene, I could only work with two photos provided by the rescue worker (one in which her face was censored), one side angle photo taken by the boyfriend (which he allegedly sent to the aunt as proof because she did not initially believe the girl was dead when he called). It doesn't make for great scene analysis. The aunts' reactions are not altogether uncommon, especially in situations like this where the girl is living in another country and the family doesn't know anything about the boyfriend. It's pretty natural to want to blame someone other than your loved one in a suicide situation, but since they were trying to get this guy locked up for murder, it might have been nice if there was more investigation.

Anyway, her body was already cut down when the responders arrived. The boyfriend informed me that when he entered the room she was hanging in full suspension with her bare feet about half a meter off of the floor. She was wearing only her bra and pajama shorts and the bed had been slept in. He said he initially thought that her body was warm, but also that he could see her tongue was swollen and protruding fully out of her mouth, and that there was urine on her shorts and on the floor beneath her. He did not immediately equate either of those features with her being deceased, but he could not revive her so he felt she had died.

The rescue worker basically corroborated the condition of the body. He said there was no blood from her nares or her mouth (it is not uncommon to bite the tongue and produce bleeding when the tongue is swollen and protruding as hers was) and that there was no sign of physical injury on her person aside from the ligature mark. The room was messy and in disarray, but seemed to be regularly in that state as opposed to it looking like there'd been a fight. He also said that the police did look over the house and that he was not privy to those reports, but that he saw nothing in the area that would make him think it was not a suicide, for what that was worth.

The aunts in Honduras believed he killed her because she was pregnant and he didn't want the child. He informed me that she had only taken the pregnancy test a week earlier and that he was happy about the baby (he said she'd only missed one period and was about 5-6 weeks pregnant), as was she. He'd taken extra shifts at work to help with future expenses. He had no idea why she would want to kill herself, but he was quite distraught. The aunt I did most of my communication with tried to tell me that they had received the full autopsy report and that it proved she was murdered, but she refused to share the report with me and could offer no explanation why the Mexican authorities would ignore this 'proof', so I personally felt she was lying about having it at all. Autopsies are not mandatory in suicidal deaths in that part of Mexico and it is unlikely that the girl's family paid for an autopsy from Honduras, since they were running a GFM to have her body returned for burial.

All in all, my conversations with several parties and my amateur impression of the (unarguably low quality) crime scene photos did not give me any reason to doubt the boyfriend's story. The police and EMTs felt the same way, apparently. Hopefully no injustice was done here. Take the photos for what they are worth and draw your own conclusions.
