To be fair, that kid was a shitty cameraman. However, this could have been so much worse. At least kiddo had the good sense to stay high and dry. If this was a monkey see/monkey do situation, there would be two bodies to retrieve and double the tragedy.

Don't feel bad for him.... he actually filmed his dad drown, film his body recovery... and uploaded all that on WPD. He's all good trust me.

Apparently, quarries have really cold water. So cold shock could've been a factor. I doubt he would get in if he didn't know how to swim.

Generally this type of scenario happens because the victim hasn't been in a situation where they feel in danger in the water or where they can't easily escape. Then they go jumping into water that is deeper than expected or doesn't have an easy way out and start to panic, which only makes things worse as they're reaching for something to hold onto rather than pushing down on the water to keep their head above the surface.

Im with you on this. He looks unable to swim. Did he suddenly decide hed try it in water too deep to stand on? Was there some kind of unseen current or undercurrent in the Quarry water caused by the constant rippling or mechanism in the water? He goes from trying to swim out to trying to seemingly swim right back, but is unable to hold on to the rocks. This is weird either way and I hope that child find their peace one day.

My ex did that and had a similar experience. When I tried to save her she tried to use me as a floatie. Drowning people always do and it never works. They warn you not to let them when you're being trained as a lifeguard. Eventually, I kept her above water long enough to compose herself and doggie paddle to the rocks. Lesson (s) to be learned: Just because you're learning to swim, doesn't mean you should jump in the deep end. Also, arguably more important, consider your environment. Natural bodies of water don't have preset depths. They fall off in some places, have weeds, logs, trenches, and you can't always guarantee you'll be able to reach the bottom alive to push yourself back up. This was avoidable.
