Sad but 100% true. I'd have probably taken the same shot too. The moment a knife was in the picture it was do or die, just by how fast the dude coulda killed the kid. Could have easily cut the throat faster then they coulda shot him if he just committed to it. It's true that help was right there and that a cut to the throat can be survivable, even if the artery is cut. However those are just cops, not emts, so the odds of them being able to keep the kid from bleeding out aren't that great. That's not even getting into how fast you would need help to even have a chance depending on how bad the cut is.

My thoughts exactly. Seems like he got woken up by the door being kicked down - fresh out of REM, delirious, grabs a weapon to protect himself and his son/himself, and appears to be guarding his son with his body to get him away from the threat. To the officers though, it's easy to see why that might look like he was holding his kid hostage/about to inflict a deadly wound on the kid. Shit situation that probably could have been avoided had the officers announced their presence before sneaking in, though there was likely a reason for them wanting to get the drop.

Police must act in regards to the immediate situation in cases where there is threat of immediate harm to any one person. This is the reason why suspects are usually put in cuffs before any real discussion happens. Why a person lying riddled with bullets will be placed in cuffs before aid is given. Why it always seems like an officer is on a power trip when they give orders to people even in seemingly casual situations. Why these officers were required to not gamble on the possibility that the man was bluffing when he grabbed the knife.
