Mt. Juliet, Tennessee — On November 2, 2022, shortly after 11 p.m. Mt. Juliet Police officers pulled over a car that was driving on S. Mt. Juliet Road around 11 p.m. An officer spoke with the woman driving the car outside the vehicle, then a second officer went to speak with 39-year-old Eric Jermain Allen, who was in the passenger seat. The officer told them they were speeding, they have a headlight out and issues with their tags. The two told the officer they don’t have a registration, insurance or valid driver’s licenses. Officer asked Allen to exit the vehicle. Allen rolled the window up, moved into the driver’s seat, and started to drive off. In the video, you can see the officer, initially leans into the car in an attempt to stop him, before being taken with the vehicle. Within seconds, Sergeant Josh Lo shoots Allen and the vehicle came to a stop. Officers attempted to render aid, but Allen died at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Man shot by officer inside his own Prince George's apartment after alleged break-in call, AG says

Melvin Jay was was shot and killed by an officer who was responding to an alleged break-in at an apartment complex in Suitland. But Jay was inside his own apartment, the Maryland Attorney General's Office confirmed

The Prince George's County officer who shot and killed 31-year-old Melvin Jay in Jay's own apartment last week went in alone when responding to a breaking-and-entering call, the Maryland Attorney General's Office says.

Jay was was shot and killed Thursday by an officer who was responding to an alleged break-in at an apartment complex in Suitland. But Jay was inside his own apartment, the Maryland Attorney General's has confirmed.

According to police dispatch audio, a call about an alleged breaking-and-entering at the Windham Creek Apartments came in at 5:25 p.m. that evening.

The Maryland Attorney General's Office, which is investigating the shooting, says Officer Braxton Shelton entered the apartment without another officer. News4 has asked Prince George's County police whether this is in line with policy, but has yet to hear back.

A short time later, Melvin Jay was shot. He was pronounced dead in his own apartment.

There was some sort of verbal exchange between Jay and Shelton, police said Thursday. What was said or done before the shooting is a mystery, for now. Investigators say two guns were recovered near Jay, but it's unclear whether Jay was holding one or if the guns were his.

Immediately after the shooting, Prince George's County Police Chief Malik Aziz briefly spoke to reporters and provided limited information without taking questions. Police first described Jay as the break-in "suspect," but the attorney general's office did not identify him as such.

The person who originally reported the alleged break-in was also a resident of the apartment. But it's unclear what relationship that person has to Jay.

Jay's family told News4 they held a vigil in his honor at Windham Creek Apartments. Family members said they're not ready to speak about what happened.

Shelton's body-worn camera footage will likely be released 20 business days after the shooting. Shelton is on administrative leave.

FREDERICK — Body-worn camera footage has been released of a deadly police involved shooting in Frederick last month.

The incident occurred overnight on November 29, after Frederick County deputies discovered a mother and father stabbed inside their home on Haller Place. According to police, the father died of his injuries.

A short time later other responding officers found the couple's son, 23-year-old Aaron Mensah, walking nearby on Zoe Lane with a knife.

The nine-minute plus video shows officers pleading with Mensah to drop the weapon. One deputy first tries using a less-lethal beanbag shotgun on the suspect, to no avail. Another is seen deploying a taser, but that's when Mensah appears to move more aggressively towards officers at which time he's fatally wounded.

The Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division has since identified the deputies who fired as Cassy Boettcher, Travis Stely, and Nathan McLeroy.

Neither was wearing a body-worn camera at the time, so the footage released is from the angle of multiple backup officers who were on scene.
