Imagine you are experiencing intense emotional stress, such as the loss of a loved one. In this moment, your body is overwhelmed by a storm of hormones. Suddenly, like a bolt from the blue, you are struck by sharp chest pain, shortness of breath, and dizziness.
This might be Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also known as stress cardiomyopathy or "broken heart syndrome."
What is happening?
Instead of pumping blood throughout the body, the left ventricle of the heart (also called the "pump") suddenly weakens. It starts to resemble a balloon inflated on one side.
Why does this happen?
The exact cause is not fully understood. But it is believed that a sudden surge of stress hormones (adrenaline, noradrenaline) stuns the heart, disrupting its function.
Remember: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a serious condition, but with timely help, it can be treated.
Don't ignore your body's signals, take care of yourself and your loved ones
