Tragedy struck the temple in when temple elephant trampled its mahout G Gajendran, to death on the temple premises in full view of shocked devotees on Friday morning.

The 12-year-old female elephant crushed the 42-year-old mahout under its legs at 11 am when devotees were moving towards the sanctum sanctorum for worship. “Masini was brought to the temple at 10.50 am by Gajendran. In the next ten minutes, it turned violent and pushed the mahout to the ground and trampled him. His body was taken out later,” superintendent of police, Trichy district, Zia Ul Haq told TOI. Police said that devotees ran helter-skelter to safeguard themselves and in the chaos two women and a child were injured. Temple employees closed the gates of the area to prevent a rampage by the elephant.

A video of the elephant trampling the mahout is also in circulation. The video shows Masini stamping Gajendran multiple times, while someone raises an alarm. The incident triggered panic among the people in and around the temple. “Masini was generally very calm and cooperative. I wonder what provoked it to go out of control. The mahout usually brings it to the temple in the morning and takes it back to its shelter by night,” said a local resident, V P Muniappan.

On getting information, a team led by regional joint director of animal husbandry, Trichy Dr A Murugan rushed to the temple. He said that Masini got furious after someone allegedly pulled some hair from its tail, when it was blessing a couple who got married in the temple. The attempts of the mahout to calm the elephant down failed and it vented its anger on him.

Forest department officials brought a kumki elephant to the temple to control Masini. While a team of veterinarians was about to administer tranquiliser, some mahouts managed to calm the elephant. Masini was then chained in a room inside the temple. Authorities planned to take Masini back to its shelter on Friday night with the help of the kumki elephant.

Darshan was suspended following the tragedy and is expected to resume on Saturday. Samayapuram police registered a case based on a complaint by an eyewitness, G Achutan, 19. Preliminary investigations revealed that the elephant was not chained on Friday. Gajendran’s body was taken to Srirangam government hospital for post-mortem. He was a resident of Mahalikudi near Samayapuram and is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.

A father fought in vain to save his one-year-old boy after a crocodile snatched the baby from a canoe and ate him alive in Malaysia on Thursday morning.

The father and son were traveling on a river in Sabah, eastern Malaysia, during a fishing trip when the reptile struck. The dad was unable to rescue his child from the crocodile’s jaws and was himself left with bite wounds in the attempt.

Villagers rescued the dad, a Palauh tribesman reported to be in his 40s, after he managed to scramble to the banks. But the crocodile had already dragged his son into the depths.

It later emerged on the surface with the mutilated body of the baby in its jaws before sinking back into the water, dragging him down once again.

The victim, in his forties and identified by his surname Zhang, had been visiting the Youngor Zoo in Ningbo City, in East China’s Zhejiang Province, with family and friends.

Horrific mobile phone footage which has gone viral on Chinese social media, and which was later removed because of its graphic nature, shows Zhang being dragged around by the Siberian tiger.

Other big cats also surround Zhang as he tries to fight them off by kicking out with his foot, but the animals refuse to leave, with one biting down on his neck.

At the end of the clip, Zhang is dragged under the trees while employees at the wildlife park try to scare the cats away using firecrackers.

Ningbo City officials have confirmed that Zhang and one of his friends, surnamed Li, climbed the zoo’s 3-metre outer fence in order to avoid paying for the 130-RMB ($18) ticket.

The pair’s wives and children, however, did purchase tickets and entered the park legally, reports said.

I think it was a very bad idea on the man's behalf to get so close to the lion. The guy speaks in Spanish (he says "shoot it" in Spanish), but from the way he does it you can tell that Spanish is not his first language. The other people speak native Spanish.

Based on the characteristics of the injury, I don't think the guy died but I'm not sure. In any case, if someone believes that the video is not in accordance with the purpose of the site, the post can be deleted.

According to what I read on Reddit, it happened in Guatemala and the man was from Oregon, United States (although some sources say he is from Utah).

Elder Paul Richard Oakey of St. George, survived an animal attack by a lion while serving for the past 19 months as a missionary for the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Guatemala City South Mission in July of 2011. One lion reached through the cage and grabbed the missionary’s leg, causing him to fall back against the cage. A second lion then grabbed Elder Oakey’s left arm with its mouth.

The 20-year-old lost a piece of his leg, and his arm was amputated after the attack.

A stupid Chinese man went with his cameraman into the forest, where they came across a nest of wild bees. Probably due to the popularity of the video, he started beating and provoking bees into the nest. The bees attacked them. Both received multiple stings and were taken to hospital in critical condition. Both died.

A show-off snake charmer was killed after a king cobra bit him twice during a performance for neighbours.

The man, named Norjani, caught the reptile a week ago and kept it locked in his wooden hut for use in traditional medicine.

He brought it out to show locals in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, but the snake grew increasingly angry as it was hit and spun around.

Norjani could be seen laughing at the five-metre-long reptile as it hissed and attempted to make a break for freedom.

It fangs into the handler's arm.

More than two hours after the 4pm performance, Norjani began to feel sick and was taken to hospital where medics gave him anti-venom.

However, the cobra's poison had already spread throughout his body and he was pronounced dead later that evening.

Norjani's devastated family then killed the king cobra by chopping off its head, an act they believe would avenge any evil spirits.

Police said that Norjani – who claimed to be the best healer in the Mempawah district –had a reputation for risky behaviour with animals.

Police Chief Dede Hasanudin said: ‘It is true that Norjani, or Nek Tadong as he was also known, was bitten and killed by the snake.

‘At around 6.30pm the victim was taken to the clinic located in Menjalin District and was treated, but it was too late to save him.

‘He was buried the next day and the family of the dead man killed the snake.

‘Residents in the village knew that the victim used to keep many animals, including cobras.

‘He was also good at treating people with traditional techniques and was known in the village as a shaman.'

The king cobra is found throughout southern Asia and is one of the most deadly species of snake in the world.

Bite victims suffer swelling and redness around the wound, difficulty breathing, vomiting and nausea, blurred vision, sweating and salivating and numbness in the face and limbs.

Anyone who is bitten must try to remain still to slow blood circulation and prevent the venom spreading around the body.

A tourniquet can also be used at the site of the bite to stem venom flow until the victim can reach a hospital to receive anti-venom.

Cobra bites are responsible for thousands of deaths each year in the region.
