An unidentified man died and around 30,000 properties were left without power in the early hours of Monday morning as a result of an explosion and fire at Energisa's power substation in Vila Progresso, in central Campo Grande.

The initial suspicion is that the substation, near the Morenão transshipment terminal, was broken into by a man in order to steal wiring and he ended up causing the incident, dying of charring. The explosion occurred at around 04:30 and the flash of the fire was seen from kilometers away and scared many people.

Due to the explosion, instability in the power grid also ended up affecting supply in other areas of the city, causing oscillations and partial and momentary power outages.

According to Energisa, by 6:30 a.m. the supply had been re-established in practically the entire region connected to the substation. The company did not say how much damage was caused by the incident.

According to firefighters who attended the incident, this would not have been the first break-in at the substation, which was installed in the region in 2022.

In a statement, the utility said that "at 4.30am on Monday (5/01) everything indicates that there was an attempt to steal cables at the Campo Grande Progresso substation, causing a short circuit inside the substation. Even though there were notices in the area warning about high-voltage equipment, the attempt ended in the death of one person. Energisa regrets what happened and will be investigating the matter through the competent bodies. The utility also informs us that there was a power outage in the region, which was fully restored at 6.36am today."

Context: a man is recorded climbing up on an electricity pole. His wife narrates:

  • Only God to guard my husband. It must be at least 10 meters, 7 meters high this pole.

  • He will draw electricity. Lord, guard him, in the name of Jesus. Guard him - he is in your hands.

  • I will stop filming because it makes me nervous.

  • A high-voltage line. Only Jesus to guard my husband. Look, the ladder is on top of the wall.

a sudden zap of electricity

  • AAH, MY GOD. MY GOD, MY GOD. OH JESUS. AAAAAAAAAA.

  • Help! Call the fire department for the love of God! Call the fire department!

The man was trying to establish a "gato", Brazilian slang for illegally tapping into the power grid in order to draw electricity without having to pay. For such a deeply religious woman, her husband should have known not to steal. Tragic, but to be expected when you mess with high-voltage lines without proper training or equipment.
