Lol- me too, years ago. I am interested in the psychology of mountaineering, the whole "summit fever" thing- I can't imagine blithely stepping over a body including poor Greenboots, but I do enjoy videos about it.

What I also hate to see is all the trash and waste that is left behind.

It's gross. It's a sacred Tibetan mountain--Chomolungma (Mother Goddess of the World or words to that effect) so it's terrible that anyone takes crap up there and then leaves it up there. I think of Sandy Pittman's espresso machine being hauled up by Sherpa...why do you need espresso on Mount Everest? Cripes, and for those that don't know, she contributed to the 1996 disaster.

She now claims Krakower tried to made her the villain and that her espresso machine was a 1 lb pot.

Jump in the discussion.

Well, Krakauer has been known to take liberties with the truth, or at least to stretch it. But I believe she was that far removed from reality, she'll never give up the unflattering truth anyway. It's not like Rob Hall, Anatoly or Scott Fischer can disagree with her, and my understanding is Beck Weathers was chasing her skirts and is also never going to tell the truth either. (I cannot stand that whingy man) he can't even take responsibility for not going down the mountain when he was getting into trouble, but staying STILL in the death zone because "Rob told me to". No, Rob wouldn't have done such a stupid thing.

They are all crazy.

If you step over bodies to climb a mountain, you're a douche.

They die in many places but freezing to death can be avoided

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

This is pretty common. I think there’s an estimated 300 corpses on Everest. There are multiple bodies on several mountains that climbers use as landmarks to know how close to the summit they are. Bringing their bodies down is expensive and dangerous, so they just leave them there. If the person dies alone, how much better are you going to fare in the same place weighed down by the body you're trying to carry?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

If everyone who came across them just gave them a little push, they'd slowly make their way back with minimal effort by each individual. Like kicking a can down the street.

Good way to tangle some ropes, disrespect and break apart a body.

Idk seems a little ill adviced to try and tumble a person shaped ice rock down a mountain not expecting anything to go wrong?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Okay dumb question but do the bodies decompose at all? Like I know it's cold up there but do they just stay pristine forever? Do they eventually become skeletal?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Nope, they’re frozen rock solid and stay that way all year round.

Jump in the discussion.

I'll never climb Everest or K2, but I love watching videos of both mountaineering and cave diving. Like we don't have enough ways to die- go into the Death Zone on Everest or any 8000 meter mountain, and then develop tunnel vision in regards to how much work it takes to get up- and then safely descend again, So many people die up there. But it's fascinating.

I’ll never do it either but that doesn’t stop me from watching every single movie and documentary I can, and reading everything I can.

Really appreciate these. Think one of my first forays into gore was looking up everst dead bodies, green boots etc

Find it really eerie and the fact that people can't rescue them at the time as they would die too. So essentially they just get left to die

I can’t imagine how scary those last hours were for this dude if he was conscious. He’ll most likely stay on the ledge way past our lifetimes, frozen for in his final moments for decades always glancing at each climber that took his same route

Jump in the discussion.

Yeh must be really shit, slowly dying, asking others for help and just getting ignored. I know the Sherpas (absolute legends) occasionally go and clear up the mountain, not sure whether they remove the bodies nor if they do, how often they do it. I guess it would depend on where the bodies end up.

From where he is I don’t see his recovery possible anytime soon, he must’ve gotten stuck there and didint have the energy to climb down or wait for help. Still, what a hell of a view to die in front of

there is more than 200 bodies on Mount Everest. Up that high, rescue is almost impossible, and they just leave the bodies there.

Any back story or location?

The fading of the clothing looks like he was there for at least one season

Jump in the discussion.

No backstory but I watched a documentary once about this type of stuff. Apparently it's very common to find dead people high up in the mountains. Helicopters cannot reach these highs because of the wind and thin air. For people like these climbers it's way to dangerous to risk their life to bring down a corpse from such a high. So most of the time the dead just pile up near the top. I've found an article here and it seems on Mount Everest alone are about 300 bodies.

I haven't found a back story yet.

I'll update the post if I find anything.

As the UV radiation on mountains is intense and the clothes fade faster, I can't estimate how long he's/she's been on that mountain.

Genuinely curious, how do you progress in a situation like this?

Your path is blocked by a corpse, the only real way ahead is to literally step on them, is that what you do or is there like a better way?

Seeing a dead body somewhere way up like that isn’t like “Oh my gosh, a dead body!” in a traumatized tone of voice, it’s “Oh look, another dead body.” in a monotone, nonchalant tone of voice.
