Thumbnail: summary of the events from article in Der Spiegel.
On 19th of November 2005, the IED killed one marine in Haditha (western Iraq) and wounded two others. It startled other soldiers, who started looking for the insurgents - and possibly the person responsible for planting the IED - in the nearby houses. For unclear reasons, they killed 24 unarmed civilians over the span of 3 to 5 hours. Among the victims were 5 people in the taxi (its driver and 4 passengers) and the members of 3 families, all killed in execution style. Six of the victims were children (from 1 to 14 yo), and one was a disabled 76 yo man. That case surfaced accidentally in 2006, when The Time redaction was provided with aftermath footage. Initially, it was dismissed (by the army, not the journalists) as 'al-Qaeda propaganda'. The credibility of the footage was questioned because of its origins (i.e., who sent it and why). In 2012, charges against six soldiers were dropped, and a 7th one was acquitted in a court-martial.
I didn't put a warning, as there's no gore relating to children, only text. But keep in mind that six children were killed, and others survived either by playing dead or being taken outside by a relative.
Sections go as follows:
The beginnings. Time, place, and IED. Only b&w photos are available for its aftermath, and AFAIK there are no videos relating to this massacre publicly released.
The tape. Not fully released.
Massacre and its victims. Includes photos. It's not much, and there are barely any gory ones; actually, mostly they're still frames from the video.
Trials and errors. Or, as one retired marine judge said, 'errors built upon mistakes'. Includes a timeline.
⠀THE BEGINNINGS
At the time of the events, Haditha was an agricultural town that, together with the surrounding areas, was inhabited by around 90,000 people. It lies around 140 miles (230 km) north-west of Baghdad. On 19 November 2005, around 7;15 AM, an IED exploded under the 4th Humvee in in the convoy patrolling the Subhani neighbourhood. It killed 20 yo Lance Cpl. Miguel Terrazas and wounded two other soldiers: 20 yo PFC James Crossan (sitting next to Terrazas) and 19 yo Salvador Guzman (sitting in the rear of the vehicle). At first, Crossan would be driving the Humvee. He was nervous, though, as it was his first time in the combat zone, and asked Terrazas to take over for him.
B&w aftermath photo of the explosion, from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service report (obtained by The Washington Post):
You can check out the report on the NCIS website, in four parts. It's only text, though, and searching for Haditha in their photo section gives no results.
Other explosion damage:
B&w photos of the taxi driver and passengers, first of the massacre victims:
On 21th of November, news started spreading about a bomb that exploded in Haditha, killing one soldier and 15 civilians. 11 more Iraqis were reportedly killed on that Sunday (19th of November) during 'various incidents'.
Immediately following the bombing, gunmen attacked the convoy with small arms fire. Iraqi army soldiers and marines returned fire, killing eight insurgents and wounding another.
It was an official version until January 2006.
Not long after Chiarelli arrived in Baghdad, an Iraqi journalism student gave an Iraqi human rights group a video he had taken in Haditha the day after the incident. It showed the scene at the local morgue and the damage in the houses where the killings took place. The video reached Time magazine, whose reporters began questioning U.S. military officials. Pool, the Marine captain, sent the reporters a dismissive e-mail saying that they were falling for al-Qaeda propaganda, the magazine said recently. "I cannot believe you're buying any of this," he wrote. Pool declined last week to comment on any aspect of the Haditha incident.
The mentioned man wasn't an official, but a spokesman, Capt. Jeffrey S. Pool. The same who gave an 'official scenario' to The New York Times in November 2005. 'Journalism student' later turned out to be made-up, but media outrage had already started.
⠀THE TAPE
If you'd like to see an example of a longer article about 'al-Qaeda propaganda', check this one from November 2007. There is also an interview linked with a director of the movie 'Battle of Haditha', and other articles that say, tl;dr we did nothing wrong here, blame the insurgents. Both are good examples of the opposite side's propaganda. The massacre here is called an 'incident', 'collateral damage', and the news coverage in the American newspapers a 'huge propaganda victory for the insurgents'. It was told to cause 'immeasurable harm to an organization in which honor and integrity are fundamental building blocks' - even though Abu Ghraib drama was still going on and started more than three years earlier. According to the author:
The month before Time published its report, insurgent counter-intelligence operatives Thaer Thabit al-Hadithi and Abdul-Rahman al-Mashhadani, sole members of the so-called Hammurabi Human Rights Association, provided the inflammatory video tape to McGirk [...]
Some attempts to discredit the aftermath footage were based on its unclear origins. The 'journalism student' was actually a 43 yo man, the first of the two mentioned, with unclear affiliations. It was brought up that reportedly his family members were imprisoned for joining the insurgency. It was unclear when and where this video was taken or why it 'surfaced' after 3 months. Another problem was that:
Al-Qaida in Iraq said it sent copies of the journalism student's videotape to mosques in Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, using the slayings of women and children to recruit insurgents for Iraq.
⠀MASSACRE AND ITS VICTIMS
List of the victims by the household (list and some background), including the survivors.
➔ Taxi. Driver: Ahmed Khidher. Passengers: four male university students - Khalid Ayada al-Zawi, Wajdi Ayada al-Zawi, Mohammed Battal Mahmoud and Akram Hamid Flayeh.
According to their friend, they were students at Technical Institute in Saqlawiyah, who wanted to visit their families on weekend.
➔ House 1. Dead: 76 yo Abdul Hamid Hassan Ali, his 66 yo wife Khamisa Tuma Ali, three middle-aged male relatives and 4 yo Abdullah. Wounded - 5 yo Abdul Rahman and 8 yo Iman. Survivors: two, couple's daughter-in-law Hibbah and 2 months old Asia.
Ali was often mentioned by his name, as he was the oldest victim, using a wheelchair after leg amputation due to diabetes. Even though, he was the first one in the housing block to get out in the morning, swiping dust and feeding chickens. He was shot 9 times 'in the chest and abdomen, leaving his intestines spilling out of the exit wounds in his back, according to his death certificate'.
Abdul Hameed Hasan Ali, 76 or 77 yo
Khameesa Toama Ali, 65 or 66 yo
Jahid (son of Ali), 43 yo
Waleed Abdul Hameed Hassan (another son), 35 yo
Asmaa Salman Raseef (wife of Waleed), 32 yo
Rasheed Abdul Hameed Hassan (another son), 30 yo
Abdullah Waleed Abdul Hameed, 4 yo
There was 'at least one daughter-in-law' mentioned, for unclear (to me) reasons. As Waleed's wife wasn't mentioned in this article, I assume that 'at least one' was inside, and the second - maybe was going in and out.
Photo obtained from The Washington Post:
Abdul Hamid Hassan Ali, 65, second from left, and some of his family members sit together in this picture obtained from his family. Seven members of the Hamid family were killed by Marines.
Rasheed with his wife:
➔ House 2. Dead: 43 yo Younis Salim Khafif, his 41 yo wife Aeda Yasin Ahmed, 8 yo son, four young daughters (3, 5, 10 and 14 yo) and 1 yo girl staying with the family; some sources mention her as another daughter. Survivors: 13 yo Safa Younis.
According to the witnesses, grenades were thrown into the kitchen and bathroom. Younis was heard pleading in English: 'I am friend, I am good', and the four daughters were shot while screaming. The cause of death was a gunshot, no specific injuries from grenades were mentioned. 13 yo Safa survived, as she was stained with her mother's blood and fainted, which made her look dead.
Younis Salim Khalif or Younis Salim Raseef, 43 yo
Aeda Yasin Ahmed (wife), 35 yo
Muhammad Younis Salim (son), 8 yo
Noor Younis Salim, 14 yo
Sabaa Younis Salim, 9 (or 10?) yo
Zainab Younis Salim, 5 yo
Aisha Younis Salim, 2 or 3 yo
Unnamed (?) girl, 1 yo.
➔ House 3. Dead: Marwan, Qahtan, Chasib and Jamal Ahmed (28, 24, 27 and 41 yo). No other people were inside. It is not sure whether the four brothers' father was inside, and he could be 25th victim.
One marine official claimed that one of the brothers had a weapon, the only one found in the victims' vicinity. There was no information about whether he used it or tried to, though. Brothers were gathered together before the execution, either there's a wardrobe mentioned or nothing specific.
Khaled Aid, 20, points to the bullet holes in the wardrobe where he found his father's body alongside those of his three uncles after they had been killed by U.S. Marines [...]
I didn't find info about length of this tape and the exact scenes shown. Apart from e.g. this:
The families of the victims received $2,500 for each person killed. A boy appears at the end of the video that depicts the scene of the crime shortly after the incident. He is a member of Ayd Ahmed's family. He was filmed in his parents' house. The camera zooms in on his face, tears streaming down his cheeks. He points to one of the bodies lying on the floor, wrapped in a colorful blanket. The boy cries out, his voice hoarse and rasping: "That was my father you killed! That's my father! He wanted to sell cars? That's my father there on the floor! God will punish you! My father!"
Apparently, some photos shared by Der Spiegel are stillframes from this video, unless another one exists. Associated Press only published short parts of the footage dated November 2005, all few seconds long.
In the 2nd half of this Al-Jazeera video, there is more short parts from this footage. Date says December 2006, but it's rather date of airing the video (which matches the aftermath stills/'photos').
CNN shared parts of this video with the original audio in this article.
Gallery below is taken from Der Spiegel. As they've credited some photos / stillframes to different agencies, I assume that the full video wasn't freely available to the journalists.
Another one.
This image is believed to have been taken a day or two after the Haditha incident and was made available in Baghdad on June 2, 2006, by lawyer Khaled Salem Rsayef. It purportedly shows the scene in one of the houses in Haditha, Iraq, after two dozen civilian Iraqis were killed by U.S. Marines. Rsayef, 40, a lawyer representing several of the families, said he lost a sister, her husband, an aunt and her husband, and several cousins in the killings.
⠀TRIALS AND ERRORS
First, timeline.
19th of November 2005 - an IED kills one soldier, triggering the others, 24 civilians are killed over 3 to 5 hours.
29th of March 2006 - The Time published an allegations after receiving the aftermath footage.
8th of April 2006 - the commander of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment and two company commanders are relieved of command and placed on staff duty during the investigation.
29th of May 2006 - CNN reporters are told by Gen. Peter Pace that there are two investigations: into what happened and into why the military didn't know about the incident sooner.
21st of December 2006 - eight soldiers face criminal charges or administrative punishment in connection to the massacre (list is under the timeline).
6th of January 2007 - The Washington Post publishes photos and information about the 'incident'. It includes the b&w photos you've seen in the very beginning.
Shortly after, attorneys for the charged soldiers requested a probe to determined who leaked the photos. They've claimed that the trials can't be fair because of them. US criminal investigators claimed there's no evidence to support the claim that the 5 men were shot after trying to run away. According to them, they were shot no more than 18 feet (5,5 m) from the taxi, after being ordered to exist and spread withing arm's length of each other.
2nd of April 2007 - charges against Dela Cruz are dropped in exchange for his testimony.
9th of August 2007 - charges against Sharratt and Stone are dropped after Lt. Gen. James Mattis ruled that they didn't act inappropriately under the circumstances.
23rd of August 2007 - the investigating officer Lt. Col. Paul Ware recommends that all charges against Tatum should be dropped, as the evidence is too weak for a court-martial.
5th of September 2007 - letters of censure from the secretary of the Navy in connection to the Haditha investigation are received by: Maj. Gen. Richard A. Huck (former commanding general of the 2nd Marine Division); Col. Stephen W. Davis (former commanding officer of Regimental Combat Team 2, 2nd Marine Division), and Col. Robert G. Sokoloski (former chief of staff of 2nd Marine Division)
18th of September 2007 - charges against McConnell are dropped by Mattis.
4th of October 2007 - the investigating officer Ware recommends that the murder charges should be dropped from Wuterich's case, and instead he should be tried for negligent homicide (lesser offense)
19th of October 2007 - The Marine Corps announces that Chessani and Tatum will face courts-martial.
Let's skip the details, because in 2008 all charges against Chessani were dropped (17th of June), just as for Tatum (28th of March), and Greyson - not yet mentioned in detail - was found not guilty (4th of June).
7th of May 2008 - a movie 'Battle for Haditha' opens, showing a dramatized version of the events. Official trailer:
Here the timeline skips a few years
January 2012 - court-martial of Wuterich, the last of eight soldiers charged, begins with jury selection (12th of January). He is charged with nine counts of voluntary manslaughter and other offenses. On 23rd of Janury, he pleaded guilty to one count of negligent dereliction of duty, and on 24th of January - sentenced to 90 days in prison and a reduction in pay and rank, from staff sergeant to private.
More normal way of saying 'negligent dereliction of duty' is - in this context - giving an improper order or instruction. He was a squad leader, who told his soldiers to 'shoot first, ask questions later'. In early 2012, he was living in southern California with his two daughters (out of three he had). His comment on the case:
Earlier in the day, Wuterich told the judge that he was not a “monster” or “cold-blooded baby killer.”
“For six years, I have had to accept that my name will always be associated with a massacre, being a cold-blooded baby killer, an ‘out of control' monster, and a conspiring liar,” Wuterich told the court. “There's nothing I can do about whoever believes these things.”
“I never fired my weapon at any women or children that day” in 2005, Wuterich said. “When I told my team to shoot first and ask questions later, the intent wasn't that they would shoot civilians, it was that they would not hesitate in the face of the enemy,” he said.
At least up to 2012, he has only given one interview in the front of camera - in 2007, for CBS.
The whole NCIS report is nearly 900 pages long, so didn't even try to read it and figure out WTF happened and why. This article ('Why We Should Be Glad the Haditha Massacre Marine Got No Jail Time') explains some doubts. During the investigation, it was found that either execution-style killings or the massacre itself were not planned. It was no bullshit-free, though.
James Mattis [...], noted in dismissing the charges against two of the accused that the country was "fighting a shadowy enemy who hides among the innocent people, does not comply with any aspect of the law of war, and routinely targets and intentionally draws fire toward civilians."
Shadowy enemy is the explanation I've already heard in another war crime story, about US soldiers 'Kill Team' in Afghanistan (I made a longer post about it, too). The line between an enemy and a non-enemy was going blurry because the enemies were often either not wearing uniforms or not being visible at all (unless it was just their remains). That was reportedly an explanation (partial?) for similar 'mistakes' and morals going loose. It can't be applied to a situation where people were shot from close range and unarmed.
Low-res photos of the accused, list below (charges put in brackets).
Lance Cpl. Justin Sharratt (one count of unpremeditated murder, with three specifications - one for each fatality).
Lance Cpl. Stephen Tatum (negligent homicide and assault).
Sgt. Sanick Dela Cruz (unpremeditated murder and making a false statement). He was also known for this statement: 'I know it was a bad thing what I've done, but I done it because I was angry TJ was dead and I pissed on one Iraqi's head'.
Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani (one count of violating a lawful order and two counts of dereliction of duty).
Capt. Randy Stone (dereliction of duty and violating a lawful order).
Capt. Lucas McConnell (dereliction of duty).
First Lt. Andrew Grayson (obstruction of justice, dereliction of duty and making a false statementv.
Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich (13 counts of unpremeditated murder, making false statements to investigators, and trying to persuade others to do the same; the murder charges included 12 counts of unpremeditated murder against individuals, and one count of the murder of six people “while engaged in an act inherently dangerous to others”).
Democracy Now! has two videos on this case, around 10 mins and 7 mins long, from February 2012. Tl;dr what's this about: how the story was discovered and unfolding, it includes parts of the 'journalism student's footage, short part of the interview with witnesses / survivors, and with one guy from The Time being a part of the original journalist investigation.
Part 2. It starts from the footage showing an inside of the House 3, and comments from the man who discovered his brothers dead in the wardrobe. Then, it goes back to the interview and 'surreal experience' relating to the investigation.

Another brother was filming the murder while the other family members witnessed the horrific incident as if nothing wrong was happening.
In the heart-wrenching video obtained by ARY News, the man can be seen strangling the sister's throat with other family members including the victim's sister-in-law witnessing the murder soothingly. After the murder, the father of both the accused and the victim also offered water to the suspect.
Meanwhile, the police arrested two of the main accused persons and a case has been registered.
According to the police spokesman, 22-year-old Maria was strangled to death by her brother and father. Maria was killed at midnight on March 17 and 18. After killing the woman, the family members laid her to rest quietly.

On a Monday afternoon in February 2020, 42 year old Sarah Boone called police to report that she’d found her boyfriend, 42 year old Jorge Torres Jr, dead in a suitcase.
She claimed that on the previous evening they had been drinking wine, doing puzzles, and playing hide and seek when she convinced Jorge to climb into the suitcase, but after, she says, she fell asleep by mistake.
Sarah’s account would be contradicted by a video police found on her phone which showed her taunting Jorge while he struggled to breath inside the suitcase.
Witnesses claimed that it wasn’t unusual to hear Sarah and Jorge fighting, and both had been previously arrested for assaulting one another.
In 2018, Sarah was arrested for strangling Jorge, who claimed he had to fight her off to avoid dying. Sarah said it happened because Jorge hit her in the eye for talking to another man.
Jorge’s autopsy suggested he had suffocated inside the suitcase for 11 hours.
He had cuts and bruises all over his body.
Sarah Boone was charged with second-degree murder. Her trial is set to begin in November, 2022.

Absolute classic! Almost 30 years old.
Though very tame when compared to the stuff today and even the sequels to this movie.
But it had at least 100% real death scenes whereas "Faces of Death" had some fake scenes mixed in...
All in all a good watch, even if only for the nostalgia.
There are some famous scenes, interesting autopsy bits, and even a sex reassignment, too. 👍
I edited the 2 animal death scenes out, so I don't get in trouble with the rules on here, but I've made a list below of what happens in them.
More information about the movie:
Animal Death Scenes I Cut Out:
(1) Several pigs being burnt alive using some sort of bunsen-burner-like flamethrower. You are seeing their skin turn black and turned to a crisp.
(2) A bear is climbing onto the top of a big electric pole. Gets electrocuted and falls off.
