A man was shot dead by Tampa police when he led them on a chase Monday evening after stabbing a woman multiple times in front of three kids, according to officials.

The man, a 33-year-old who was not publicly identified, stabbed a woman multiple times in the 2800 block of 35th Street while in front of three children between the ages of 2 and 6, officials said. Police initially said there were two children, but later said there were three.

The man left with the kids and dropped them off with his brother, police said. The man then stole his brother's AK-47, which was later pointed at officers during the chase.

The man's car was spotted at 5:40 p.m. headed south near Dale Mabry Highway and Spruce Street, officials said.

The suspect drove around spike strips that were deployed before he crashed into a blue sedan on Florida Avenue, where the man opened fire, officials said.

Multiple officers shot back, and the man was killed, according to police.

Sabrina Turner said she was caught in the crossfire while she was driving to work on North Florida Avenue.

“I was terrified,” she said. “I tried to get down on the floor and hide. I knew I was gonna get shot. I just didn't know where, if I was gonna survive.”

Turner ducked for cover in her driver's seat.

“I saw my door just kind of fling open and a police officer just grabbed me and ran me this way to cover behind a building,” she said. “They were still shooting back and forth.”

Police Chief Lee Bercaw called the officers “heroes” and offered thoughts to the woman who was stabbed and taken to a hospital in critical condition.

No other injuries were reported.

“This suspect was a public menace and deadly threat to our community,” Bercaw said. “He had no regard for human life.”

“No one should have to witness the chaos that this suspect caused our community,” Bercaw said.

That video shows both men coming under fire and seeking refuge in a garage as a neighbor with a semiautomatic pistol keeps shooting toward Young as cover, a “heroic” act that allowed the deputies to seek medical treatment out of the line of fire, according to previous Herald reporting.

Young is facing several felony charges stemming from the incident, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder. His trial is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 14, according to online court records.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego police released bodycam video Tuesday showing the moment an officer shot and killed an armed suspect while carrying out a search warrant at an apartment complex in the College Area.

The shooting occurred around 6:45 p.m. on Aug. 15 in the 6100 block of El Cajon Boulevard, according to SDPD. Detectives were attempting to contact a man who considered a person of interest in a shooting in Clairemont earlier this month.

The video released Tuesday begins with private dashcam footage of the initial incident, which occurred nearby the intersection of Ben Street and Beagle Street around 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 2.

In the video pulled from a parked car, two occupants in a white Tesla can be seen opening the car's doors to shoot at another car. At least five shots can be heard before the two suspects got back into the Tesla, reversing the car out of sight of the dash cam.

Shortly after, officers located the Tesla in the alley behind the 7400 block of Armstrong Place, according to SDPD. Only one of the suspects, 33-year-old Benjamin Pickens, was with the vehicle when it was found. However, Pickens drove off, and officers lost sight of him.

He was later found walking nearby Mesa College campus, leading to a shooting involving police that left a K-9 named “Sir” and Pickens dead.

Through SDPD's investigation, detectives later identified the second occupant in the Tesla as 31-year-old Xavier Benjamine Lacosta. Investigators obtained a search warrant for his apartment and a warrant for his arrest.

According to SDPD, officers set a perimeter around the apartment and attempted to contact Lacosta, giving verbal commands and warnings to come out with his hands up. Lt. Joseph Jarjura told FOX 5 that law enforcement also attempted to make phone calls into the residence.

In the bodycam video from Officer Gregory Simon, the commands given by police can be heard. Lacosta can then be seen opening his door of his apartment with a gun in his hand. Officers then yell at the suspect to drop the weapon, with Simon saying “I will shoot you.”

The footage shows Lacosta complying, placing the gun on the ground near his feet. Seconds later, however, he can be seen trying to reach for the gun, prompting Simon to fire off at least seven shots. The suspect then dropped to the ground.

According to SDPD after the incident, at least one of the rounds fired from the officer struck Lacosta. Life-saving measures were rendered, but he was ultimately pronounced dead on scene.

The firearm in the hand of the suspect was later identified as a ghost gun loaded with a single round, police said.

According to authorities, Simon has been on the force since 2016. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department Homicide Unit will continue to investigate the shooting, which will then be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office to determine whether the officer bears any criminal liability.

A separate review of the incident will be conducted by the San Diego Commission on Police Practices to provide recommendations for any appropriate disciplinary measures.

https://fox5sandiego.com/news/local-news/suspect-killed-after-allegedly-shooting-police-dog-identified

SAN DIEGO — Police identified a man who was killed in a shooting involving law enforcement in the Clairemont neighborhood last week. He was also suspected of firing his gun and killing a K-9 police dog.

Benjamin Pickens, 33, was identified as the suspect, Lt. Joseph Jarjura with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSO) said in a news release Monday. His cause of death is due to a gunshot wound while the manner is homicide, according to authorities.

“Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Homicide Unit was called to the scene to conduct the officer-involved-shooting investigation,” Jarjura said.

The officer who shot the suspect was also identified as Addam Ansarie, who is currently assigned as a patrol officer in the Western Division and has been with the San Diego Police Department for 11 years, according to authorities.

Police on Aug. 2 initially responded around 1:23 a.m. about shots fired in the 3500 block of Ben Street. The shooting suspect, a passenger in a white Tesla sedan, drove away from the scene where no one was injured, per law enforcement.

When officers located the Tesla, they saw the suspect in the driver's seat with a handgun in his hands. Police tried to pull the vehicle over but the suspect drove away.

The Tesla was found on the Mesa College campus, where the armed suspect left the car and ran on Mesa College Circle, the sheriff's department said.

After multiple verbal commands, the suspect, who was non-compliant and acting erratic, “made multiple movements grabbing the gun with his right hand” from underneath his left armpit, per SDSO.

A K-9 officer then deployed his patrol canine partner, Sir, toward the suspect who rotated his body to the right and drew the handgun from his armpit.

“This prompted one officer to fire one round from his rifle, striking the suspect in the upper left area of his torso. The suspect also fired one round,” Jarjura said.

Pickens was taken to the hospital where he later died due to his injuries, police said. Sir was struck in the upper right chest and taken to a veterinarian clinic, but the dog also died from his injuries.

November 14, 2022 Police arrest Milwaukee man after finding dead body in residence

https://www.cbs58.com/news/mpd-elderly-woman-found-dead-man-shot-by-police-officer-injured-in-overnight-incident

MILWAUKEE — A routine welfare check in Milwaukee ended in injury early Monday morning, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.

Police said at around 12:19 a.m., they responded to a call for a welfare check at the 2300 block of North Booth Street, which is near Kilbourne Reservoir Park in Riverwest.

Upon arrival, the 24-year-old officer from the Milwaukee Police Department encountered a 31-year-old Milwaukee man who let the officer into the residence.

Once inside, the officer saw the dead body of a 75-year-old Milwaukee woman. After finding the body, police considered the 31-year-old man a suspect and attempted to detain him.

However, the suspect resisted, arming himself with a pole and a weight. The officer then gave multiple commands for the suspect to drop his weapon, but the suspect refused.

At that point, the officer discharged his firearm, striking the man.

Both the officer and the man were taken to local hospitals for non-fatal injuries. The 24-year-old officer will be placed on administrative duty, as is protocol for the Milwaukee Police Department.

The cause of the 75-year-old woman’s death is still under investigation, but police say there were no visible signs of trauma on the body.

Fontana police shoot man fleeing with a gun in his hand (multiple POVs)

Original video (WARNING: 4K):

Fontana, California, United States

December 13, 2023

Four months after Fontana police fatally shot a man wanted for brandishing a gun, Chief Michael Dorsey on Thursday, April 4, publicly released visual and audio recordings and still images that show three officers chasing him apparently carrying a gun through a commercial area before firing upon him.

Dorsey had cited legally allowed exemptions to the open-records law out of concern that releasing the recordings and images would jeopardize an investigation.

Officer Steven Reed, a department spokesman, said in an interview on Thursday that the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the shooting, recently told Fontana police they could make the information public. The San Bernardino County District's Attorney's Office is also investigating.

The name of the man killed in the Dec. 13 shooting, Jose Pena Mejia, had been among the details withheld until Thursday. Fontana police had also declined to say whether the suspect had fired on officers and elaborate on their previous statement that officers fired when the “situation escalated.”

Mejia became a wanted man in November when police identified him as a suspect in a firearm brandishing at a market.

Around 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 13, an officer pulled over Mejia's blue pickup near Mango Avenue and Foothill Boulevard in Fontana, Dorsey says in a recording posted on the department's Facebook page, because of a broken tail light. The officer called for backup when he ran a records check and learned that Mejia was wanted.

A recording shows a gun that Dorsey says police found on the ground near Mejia after the shooting.

“Mejia set forth a series of events that forced Fontana police officers to protect both themselves and the community at large”, Dorsey says.

Dorsey adds that Mejia was a documented gang member with convictions for attempted murder, domestic violence and kidnapping.

Family members of Mejia accused the city of repeatedly refusing to release documents and recordings of the shooting to their attorneys, according to a lawsuit they filed in late January.
