TL;DR. The videos in this post show the interrogation and some torture of Samuel Kanyon Doe (born 6th of May 1950/51, died on 9/10th of September 1990). He was a member of the Krahn (Wee) tribe and enlisted in the army when 18 yo, ending up as a master sergeant in 1979. In April 1980, he led an attack, with another Krahn soldiers, on the Liberian executive mansion, killing President William R. Tolbert. Later, 13 prominent Tolbert associates were tried and executed. After the coup, Doe assumed the rank of general and established the People's Redemption Council (PRC). It ruled the party until 1985, when Doe became president of Liberia - after an election that some claimed to be fraudulent. Abroad, Doe's rule was described as corrupt and brutal, and the economic conditions were deteriorating. Doe's life was threatened on a regular basis by assassination attempts and plots, suppressed with outstanding brutality. He was also clearly favoring his own Krahn tribe members. In late 1989, a rebellion sparked against him. By July 1990, the rebel forces had advanced into the capital (Monrovia), but Doe refused to yield power. The civil war continued, and two months later, he was captured and assassinated - after a torture, which was partially videotaped.

In the second video, the dialogue is more clear. In the first one, though, the white noise distorts the dialogues really much. At some points, it's even hard to tell that they speak English (which is an official language in Liberia). Country and its capital:

⠀VIDEOS AND COMMENTS :marseypopcorntime:

  • First video (15 mins, 78 MB). 9th of September 1990, Bushrod Island clinic in Monrovia. Shows 'interrogation' and, at the end, cutting off ear. The man behind the desk is Prince Yomi Johnson, chilling out with a Budweiser and a maid fanning him (like in 7;30). You can see at the end that Doe was already tortured before the recording. In this video, first good screams of pain begin around 13;20, and cutting off the ears - around 14;10.

Bushrod Island was a suburb of a Monrovia controlled by Johnson's rebels for the two months before the Doe's capture (as the rebel forces advanced into the capital in July 1990). Quotes on the video's content, some of which is not clear when you watch it first time or at all:

The president is almost spent, but the worst is yet to come. He is shirtless, with no trousers, his white underpants soaked in blood. His gris-gris has been ripped off. His eyes are wide open and his legs are already gone: a round of Kalashnikovs severed them from his body. Doe lies on the floor of this dingy office, surrounded by overexcited soldiers, begging. He is ready to give up everything: his fortune, the caches where his relatives are hiding, his bank account numbers and even his power – if he has any left.

The soldiers bully him, we don't even know what they really want. Is it Doe's pleas or the sneers of his torturers? You can't hear anything in the small room at the Bushrod Island clinic in Monrovia. Amidst the hubbub, one journalist hands a microphone to the head of state, another films the scene.

The next day, 9 September 1990, the recording became a best-seller in Monrovia's markets. It is not often that one witnesses the killing of a president.

Doe has been whimpering in front of him for almost 15 minutes. Enough is enough. His men rush to the president: they cut off one of his ears...Doe has no lower limbs, then his genitals are crushed and, after a sip of Budweiser, his ears are cut off. Why? No one really knows, and it goes on for hours.

Reportedly, a marshal of INPFL (Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia - rebel group) was heard on walkie-talkie, trying to contact someone in the American embassy, in vain.

Explanation about the ear-cutting significance:

“You know why I did this to Samuel Doe? In my county of Nimba [in the north of the country], years before, he and his men killed 300 babies. Just before they were executed, they were screaming, but Doe did not hear their pleas. So I cut off his ears,” Prince Johnson told us in 2018, from his posh Monrovia office. Liberia's most notorious murderer has never expressed an ounce of remorse.

  • Second video (10 mins, 40 MB). Shows Doe interrogated outside while naked. Now dialogue is definitely more audible. It's about where did Doe keep money. He claims that on a foreign bank account (it was Swiss), and he doesn't know the number.

⠀WHAT NEXT? :marseyhmm:

It was right at the beginning of the First Civil War in Liberia. It started with an uprising against Samuel Doe in 1989, led by Charles Taylor. The first (1989-1997) and second (1999-2003) civil wars resulted in the deaths of around 250,000 people, roughly 8% of the population. In 1997, Taylor became a president after a peace deal. However, two new rebel groups emerged in 1999, and the war was reignited. Taylor stepped down and went into exile in 2003, ahead of a peace deal.

The exact moment of Doe's death in 1990 wasn't filmed. For the next few days, the president's body was displayed by Prince Johnson's rebels. They were parading the body through the streets of Monrovia in a wheelbarrow. Reportedly, the crowd was delighted. It was also displayed (not sure at which time?) in the Island Clinic area. Immediately after Doe's death, Johnson declared himself head of state. He had really mixed opinions, from the fear of his 'psychopathic' behavior to the appreciation of his humanitarian actions. The tape showing the torture was sold in copies in some Western African countries, and short clips were broadcast in the British news.

Aftermath:

Quote from 2011 on Johnson's view:

When asked about a widely circulated video showing Johnson sipping beer while watching his fighters mutilate Doe after his capture, Johnson said the clip was “unfortunate.”

“We are remorseful. I am a civil servant to my people, I am senator, I am a humanitarian ... and I am a changed person.”

Newly-leaked bodycam footage shows Decatur police killing man with a gun in his hand (multiple POVs)

Original videos

Decatur, Alabama, United States

September 29, 2023

In the early morning hours of Sept. 29, 2023, Decatur man Steve Perkins, 39, was shot and killed when Decatur Police officers accompanied a tow truck driver trying to repossess Perkins' truck.

The tow truck driver had reportedly already tried to repossess Perkins' truck before but was chased off at gunpoint. The driver reported the incident to police and later returned with the officers when the shooting occurred.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) turned over its investigation material to the Morgan County District Attorney's office on Dec. 26, 2023. Until now, only small clips and Ring doorbell camera footage have been released to the public.

However, 1819 News has obtained the footage compiled by ALEA for the DA's office as part of their investigation.

An attorney for the Perkins family said Perkins did not have time to comply with police before he was gunned down.

After an internal investigation, Decatur Police Chief Todd Pinion "determined department policies were violated," Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling said during a city council meeting on Nov. 20, 2023. The three officers who were terminated and the one suspended following the incident are appealing the decision. A grand jury indicted former officer Mac Bailey Marquette on January 4 for murdering Perkins, and he is set to stand trial on November 18. He has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Last week, Huntsville radio WVNN's Dale Jackson announced his possession of the full ALEA footage, which led to an online dispute with a Decatur Daily reporter David Gambino, who has since deleted his Twitter account.

According to WHNT, three officers have asked to dismiss the civil case. The lawsuit names four officers: Bailey Marquette, Christopher Mukkadam, Joey Williams and Vance Summers. It alleges federal civil rights violations by these defendants. Mukkadam, Williams and Summers all filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit as they aren't facing any charges in connection to the shooting.

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Chase starts at 3:10 Shooting happens at 3:20ish

https://www.rochesterfirst.com/rochester/friend-remembers-todd-novick-rochester-man-shot-and-killed-by-police

https://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/local/2024/02/07/daniel-celiberti-identified-as-rpd-officer-who-killed-todd-novick/72499308007

The Office of Attorney General Letitia James released video of a deadly police shooting on Christmas Eve in Rochester Tuesday.

Rochester police fatally shot Todd Novick, 46, around 8:30 a.m. on December 24 on Murray Street. Investigators said officers were called to the scene for reports of a man with a gun.

The 1:47 video released by the AG's office Tuesday includes 20 seconds of footage and audio after the shooting omitted from the video previously released by the Rochester Police Department.

It begins with an officer identified as Officer Celiberti approaching the scene in a vehicle. Novick is standing with at least one other person, who has been blurred from the video.

“What's going on today,” the officer says.

“Just walking this way,” an unidentified person says. “We're not staying long.”

Novick tells the officer he's going to work at a mechanic shop. The officer asks what he does there, and Novick says he works on cars.

“So what are you guys doing right here though,” the officer says.

“I was passing by, and we were talking,” Novick says. “I can't [unintelligible] go by and talk?”

Another RPD patrol car pulls up to the scene, and Officer Celiberti says, “we've got some weird calls, man.”

At that point, Novick walks around the blurred person or people, away from the officer who just arrived. Officer Celiberti begins asking him to hang on a minute, but Novick sprints away.

The officer gives chase. Within four seconds, Novick appears to lift up his shirt and reach for his waistband. The officer aims their weapon and orders Novick to stop

As Novick turns the corner, he appears to have something in his hand. The officer says “drop the gun, drop the-” then shoots five times.

Novick collapses in the driveway and rolls over onto his back. The officer orders him to get on his stomach and put his hands behind his back.

“On your stomach now! On your stomach now! Hands behind your back. Hands behind your back. Other hand behind your back. Hand behind your [expletive] back!

“I was trying to put it down,” Novick says when a second officer approaches and begins handcuffing him.

Police call for backup, saying a male is down, and a handgun is recovered. The video ends there.

Novick was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police later said the handgun was a replica.

3 October 2023

A man who was shot and killed by Anaheim Police on Tuesday was suspected of committing a felony sexual assault, authorities said.

The incident unfolded shortly after 1 p.m. when, according to police, officers tried to arrest Luis Munoz, 29, in the 300 block of West Orangewood Avenue.

“Munoz ran from officers, causing officers to pursue him to the area of Harbor Blvd. and Orangewood Ave., where a confrontation occurred,” Anaheim Police said in a statement Wednesday.

Munoz was struck at least once by police gunfire and was pronounced dead in the parking lot of an ARCO gas station.

A knife was recovered at the scene, according to police.

No officers were hurt.

The shooting forced the closure of several lanes of traffic at the intersection of West Orangewood Avenue and Harbor Boulevard, roughly one mile south of Disneyland.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office is investigating the shooting.

Videos released Thursday of a Tennessee traffic stop that ended in a fatal shooting shows a deputy holding on to the car's steering wheel and being carried away as the vehicle speeds off, but does not show the moment when the deputy shot the driver.

Jarveon Hudspeth, 21, was shot and killed June 24 by a Shelby County Sheriff's Office deputy after the deputy approached his car and tried to stop it from leaving the scene, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

The situation escalated and Hudspeth drove off and “dragged” the deputy about 100 yards (91 meters), the bureau said in a statement, and at some point the deputy fired his gun at least once and hit the driver. The car stopped about a half-mile later (nearly a kilometer).

The videos released by the Shelby County District Attorney's Office are from the deputy's in-car and body-worn cameras, and a neighbor's doorbell camera.

The body camera video shows the deputy stopping a white two-door car in a residential neighborhood and walking up to the vehicle. The deputy asks Hudspeth for his license, and he hands it over. The deputy tells Hudspeth to get out of the car, which he does, and then checks his pockets.

The deputy says he is going to search the car, and Hudspeth returns to sit in the driver's seat. Hudspeth then hits the accelerator, and the deputy grabs onto the steering wheel. Hudspeth appears to try to push the deputy away with his leg.

The body camera video ends with it being jostled and a view of the sky and a tree. The sound of a car driving away is heard.

The dashboard camera shows the deputy climbing into the driver's side of the car and being carried away as Hudspeth drives off with the car door open. The doorbell camera only shows the car driving past.

None of the videos show the officer being dragged or the shooting itself. The reason for the traffic stop was not immediately clear from the footage, and authorities have not provided a reason either.

Hudspeth's family, their lawyer Ben Crump and activists had been pushing for release of the video. Hudspeth's family has seen it, the district attorney's office said.

10 February 2024

Marana police officers shot and killed a man after he attempted to flee from his arrest and exchanged gunfire with officers on Saturday.

At about 5:30 p.m., Marana police officers stopped 29-year-old Tobin Pico, who was driving a Jeep Cherokee, for traffic violations in the 4100 Block of West Ina Road. According to the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team, the officers suspected Pico was impaired, and a DUI investigation led them to arrest Pico on suspicion of aggravated DUI.

The critical incident team said that as officers were placing Pico in handcuffs, he escaped and started fleeing southward over several traffic lanes. While running, officers saw Pico pull out a handgun. They shouted commands at him to stop and to put the gun down, but Pico kept running, according to police.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department used aircraft to follow Pico as he made his way to the southern part of the river path along the Canyon Del Oro Wash, where officers saw him fire his handgun into the ground, police said. He then travelled eastward toward an occupied parking lot with open businesses in the 6900 block of North Thornydale Road.

Officials said one of the officers fired his rifle at Pico, causing him to fall before getting up and continuing toward the parking lot. Pico ran into some Maran police officers after he rounded a corner, and they exchanged gunfire with each other, police said. Pico was fatally shot.

Officers and the Northwest Fire District tried to save his life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials. No officers or civilians were hurt during this shooting.

Officials identified the officers who shot at Pico as officers who had served for 12 years, seven years and six years.

Pima Regional Critical Incident Team is investigating the incident further and will present its findings to the Pima County Attorney's Office when the investigation is complete.
