While I was in class I was bored, so I decided to draw this. It's just a shitty draw but it's a start

When you die, your body goes through a series of changes to adjust to the conditions of death. In this post, I will go in-depth about the stages of death and decay. If you are confused by any terms, I included them at the bottom of the post. If a term you're confused about isn't listed there, let me know and I will help you out. Everything is labeled in the order they happen in.

Fresh + Autolysis

At this stage, pallor mortis, algor mortis, rigor mortis, and livor mortis are evident and there may be visible signs of external decomposition, on the inside, the body is breaking down cells and tissues by their own enzymes

Bloat

Occurring 3-5 days after death, gasses and bacteria accumulate and release in the body causing it to swell up and bloat. The body can almost double in size at this time. Due to the rotting blood, the body can take on a green or blackish color. At this stage, putrefaction begins to take place which emits the foul stench of decay.

Active & Advanced Decay

Active decay begins within a week to 10 weeks after death. At this stage, the muscles and organs start to liquify, and juices spill from the orifices of the body. The body decomposes due to the putrefying bacteria and fungi, which release gases that penetrate and degrade bodily tissues and organs.

Advanced decay begins around 25-50 days after death when maggots and other insects finish breaking down soft tissue that has decomposed, leaving behind hair, bones, and tendons. At this stage, putrefaction will almost/will be complete

The conditions in which the body is decomposing will greatly affect the process.

Shelter

Indoor and outdoor conditions will affect a decaying corpse differently.

Indoors, you're less likely to be exposed to harsh elements and animals (unless you have pets) so the process will look different.

• Corpses that die indoors are likely to be found faster because the stench will heavily ruminate, someone is bound to get suspicious and find you.

Outdoors, the body will decompose faster when exposed to the elements. Bacteria can thrive in those conditions and insects and animals will get to the corpse rather quickly which accelerates the decomposition process by eating away at the corpse.

Climate:

Factors such as humidity and heat contribute to faster decomposition. "The heat aids the physiological changes in the body by raising the temperature of the cadaver. Furthermore, the heat creates additional decomposition odors that attract a greater amount of bacteria and pests." [7] When a body dies in a humid, hot, moist environment, this allows for the growth of adipocere which can lead to natural mummification.

In a dry climate, the body can rapidly decompose and potentially mummify if the conditions are right.

When a corpse dies in a cooler climate the rate of decomposition will be significantly lowered because the cold temperatures slow the bacteria that cause decomposition.

Clostridium spp. plays a significant role after death because of its anaerobic nature it allows for effective decomposition. This bacteria produces gases such as hydrogen sulfide and methane which add to the malodor of decomposition.

"Bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Bacillus, and other sulphate-reducing bacteria of the GI tract are often proteolytic and have been reported to be important in the breakdown of proteins of a cadaver" [6]

(it's been a little hard finding information on the bacteria that is present in decomposition sorry lolz)

Adipocere

Dry Remains/Skeletonization

The final stage of decay. This is when decomposition is complete and leaves the skeletal system and connective tissues behind. As mentioned before, if the conditions are right at this stage a corpse could be naturally mummified

Pallor mortis

This is the first change you will see in death and occurs as little as 15-20 minutes after death, and is known as the whitening/paling of the skin after death. This occurs because blood stops traveling through the capillaries

It can also be seen in other parts of the body like the vagina, gums, and eyelids.

Algor mortis

This is the stage is the cooling down of the body after death

Rigor Mortis

To start, when someone dies their body will undergo primary relaxation which relaxes the body entirely, making them "dead weight". To elaborate, picking up a dead body will feel heavier than picking up a alive body because of the intense muscle relaxation, nothing is attempting to keep the body upward, making it feel heavier.

Time frame: Approximately 2 hours after death and completes between 6-8 hours after death. At around 24-48 hours after death, rigor mortis will subside and then disappear.

Following primary relaxation, rigor mortis takes over and causes the muscles to restrict which makes the body stiff and inflexible due to the depletion of ATP, the muscles can't relax. When rigor mortis subsides, secondary relaxation kicks in which causes the muscles to re-relax.

Livor mortis

Livor mortis occurs when blood accumulates and settles in the blood vessels in gravitationally dependent (lowest point of contact) parts of the body.

Marbling

This occurs due to the spread of bacteria in the blood stream which discolors the blood and as blood cells decay, they will stain the vein walls which exposes the superficial veins which gives the corpse a marbled look.

Definitions

Adipocere: a greyish waxy substance caused by the decomposition of soft tissue in corpses exposed to warm and moist environments

ATP: adenosine triphosphate, the energy source required for muscle contraction

Aridity: moisture deficient

Autolysis: the breakdown of cells or tissues by their own enzymes

Mortis: Latin noun for "death"

Proteolytic: enzymes that break down protein

Putrefaction: the process where proteins break down, tissues decompose, and organs liquefy. At this stage, the corpse will emit the foul stench of decay.

Putrefy: rot/decay that also emits foul odors

Some dude tried to dump her literally in front of my house and he made an excuse that he just couldn't catch her. On the morning of January 29, 1979, teenager Brenda Spencer took a break from shooting people through her window to answer the phone. On the other end was a reporter from the San Diego Tribune. He asked a few short questions to confirm that the young girl was indeed the culprit. “Yeah,” Spencer said. “Who do you think's doing the shooting?”

The reporter then asked “Why?” and the answer Spencer gave would become famous. “I don't like Mondays,” she said. “This livens up the day.”

“I have to go now,” she added. “I shot a pig [a policeman], I think, and I want to shoot more.” By the end of her sniping assault, 16-year-old Brenda Spencer had shot 11 people. Eight children and a police officer were injured, and two men — custodian Michael Suchar and principal Burton Wragg — were killed in what is considered the first modern school shooting in the United States.

That morning, Spencer had told her father she was too ill to attend class. Her dad left the house around 7 a.m. Around 8:30 that morning, Spencer retrieved her .22 caliber rifle, equipped with a telescopic sight, and began firing across the street.

Her targets were children. They were gathered outside in the parking lot of Grover Cleveland Elementary, about 150 feet away, waiting to be let into school. The first person Spencer hit was 9-year-old Monica Selvig, who was struck in the wrist by a bullet.

Spencer continued to shoot at the students. “It was fun to watch the children that had red and blue ski jackets on, as they made perfect targets,” she later said to a police investigator. Principal Burton Wragg rushed over to the children, many of whom were paralyzed in place by fear, to guide them to safety. As he tried to help, he was shot in the chest and killed.

Custodian Michael Suchar, a World War II veteran, was killed as he tried to drag Wragg's body away from the gunfire. Among those injured were 9-year-old Cam Miller, who was shot in the chest, an inch from his heart, and police officer Robert Robb, who was shot in the neck.

Spencer's assault lasted 15 minutes, before a police officer and a security guard risked their lives to drive a garbage truck in front of Spencer's house, blocking her line of sight — and attack. After a nearly seven-hour SWAT negotiation, Spencer left her house, surrendered, and was arrested.

The community and country were shocked to see this teenage girl with long wavy hair and large glasses as the source of such evil. Compounding their revulsion was her lack of repentance. “It was a lot of fun seeing children shot,” she told law enforcement, admitting how she “liked to watch them squirm around after.”

Law enforcement investigations uncovered wave after wave of disturbing information. It was learned that Spencer's father gave her the rifle and 400 rounds of ammunition as a Christmas gift, none of which she requested. “I asked for a radio and he bought me a gun,” Spencer reflected. Even more startling was news that the week before the shooting, Spencer told classmates she was about “to do something big to get on TV.”

What emerged was a portrait of a neglectful and unhealthy home. Spencer's parents had divorced seven years earlier, and she lived with her father in a home littered with beer and whiskey bottles. Character witnesses remarked that Spencer would often talk about guns, and that she would shoot at cans and birds for fun. Testimony also showed that Brenda and her father slept on the same mattress on the floor.

After her case was moved to Orange County to keep it from becoming a spectacle, Brenda Spencer pleaded guilty in court and was sentenced to 25 years to life.

The summer of that year, Irish rock band The Boomtown Rats released their song “I Don't Like Mondays,” inspired by the shooting. With lyrics like “And he can see no reasons / because there are no reasons,” it topped the U.K. charts for four straight weeks.

November 13, 2023, Houston, Texas - Police praise ex-con who helped save officer injured in shootout

A Texas man with prior run-ins with the law is being hailed as a hero after he found himself in the middle of a freeway shootout and risked his life to help pull an injured officer to safety.

John Lally was driving on Houston's Southwest Freeway around 10 a.m. Saturday when he found himself in the middle of a shootout between a carjacking suspect and multiple police officers. He saw one of the officers, identified as 29-year-old Officer J. Gibson, get shot and didn't think twice before rushing to the rescue.

“I just kind of ran over there and grabbed that guy with the other police officer… We grabbed him by his vest and dragged him behind the truck. And I kind of tucked him underneath the truck, so he wouldn't get shot again,” Lally said.

Lally documented the entire ordeal on video, which shows bullets flying past him as he dragged Gibson across the freeway. Lally then stayed with Gibson, trying his best to provide some comfort as they waited for paramedics to arrive.

It was a drastic turn of events for Lally, who has had multiple prior run-ins with law enforcement.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said officers were chasing a 19-year-old suspect allegedly driving a stolen car. The suspect crashed into several cars near Chimney Rock then got out of his car and began firing at police, the chief said.

Finner commended Lally for potentially saving Gibson's life during a Saturday afternoon press conference. The officer, a five-year police veteran, was shot in the leg and is expected to fully recover.

“People make mistakes, but a truly reformed individual is a person that we can use. He stepped up and other citizens stepped up, and I don't want that to get lost,” Finner said.

He added that the department plans to formally thank and acknowledge Lally for his heroism.

Lally says despite his multiple run-ins with the law, he still respects what police officers do and wouldn't hesitate if he had to step up again.

“I believe that we're all here for a reason. I also believe that if you see somebody in dire need, it's our job to help each other out,” he said.

Police say the carjacking suspect died at the hospital from injuries he sustained in the shootout.
