Elderly woman hit by a car in India

Mumbai, India

September 10, 2023

Due diligence by an alert cop helped unearth a road accident which the perpetrator tried to pass off as a natural death of an elderly woman.

On September 10, 73-year-old Pushpa Keni was brought to Sion Hospital by a 43-year-old man, who narrated the story of how the elderly lady collapsed in front of his vehicle and he was the good Samaritan rushing her to a medical facility.

A resident of Bhandarwada in Sion, Keni was returning home at the time of the incident. As per her son Prashant, 56, she used to go to the temple on foot every Ekadashi. She left home at 3pm and within 30 minutes the family received a call that she had “collapsed” on the road in front of a vehicle and the driver, Ismail Ansari, rushed her to hospital. Keni died the next day and the grieving family thanked Ansari for trying to save her. They, therefore, didn't register a case with the police.

The police were notified about the matter by the hospital, though. As the family hadn't approached them, police sub-inspector Indrajit Chavan went through CCTV camera footage of the day of the accident and found Ansari's Toyota Innova knocking down Keni when she was crossing the road. The footage also showed Ansari picking up the victim and shifting her inside the car.

On September 16, Chavan called up Prashant Keni and asked him to come down to the police station where he showed him the footage. “Prashant refused to register an FIR despite telling him multiple times. So we arrested Ansari suo moto,” said a senior police official.

Ansari was arrested on Sunday evening under section 279 (rash driving), 304A (causing death due to negligence), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 184 (driving dangerously) and 134 (b) (not reporting the circumstances of the occurrence (accident) to a police officer or a police station), of the Motor Vehicles Act. A driver by profession, Ansari was presented in court on Monday by the police.

Man run over by bus in India

June 3, 2023

Delhi, India

A speedy bus hit a 27-year-old man in Delhi's Civil Lines on June 3. The victim was identified as Dhanvir Singh from Nepal. Police arrested the accused, named Firoz Khan, who ran away after the incident.

According to the police, Dhanvir Singh recently shifted to Delhi from Nepal's Bijul village to support his family financially. He used to work as a food delivery executive who lived alone in Delhi. Dhanvir Singh is survived by his parents and three siblings, who had been attempting to contact him for days, unaware that he had perished in an accident, according to an officer. On June 3, the man was driving to work and attempted to cross the street.

In the footage, a private bus is seen making a fast bend and colliding with the dead, who was attempting to cross the road at a zebra crossing. The bus brakes briefly, but the driver quickly accelerates and runs over the man. According to the authorities, the bus was seen speeding following the crash. Around 5.30 a.m., the incident occurred near IP College. The cops rushed the victim to Sushruta Trauma Centre, where he was certified dead.

A senior police officer said, “There was nobody around who could identify him. His phone was not working. Several locals were questioned and CCTVs were scanned. We couldn't trace his address. One of the police informers then told us that he worked as a delivery executive. Several raids were conducted to trace his employer. He worked for a small canteen in North Delhi and delivered food. He was then identified.”

Victim's sister, Geeta Mata said, “He wanted to support our parents and us. He was trying to get a job in our village but failed. He then moved to Delhi to earn money. We thought he was unwell…didn't know he was killed. I saw the video. I wish the bus driver had stopped and helped him…he could have been saved.”

Police added IPC section 304 and said, “We checked CCTV footage from before and after the incident to create a map and identify the accused but nothing substantial was found. More than 20 CCTVs were scanned. We then found that the bus was at a petrol pump in the area. We contacted the company and collected its CCTV footage. The bus number was found and the accused was identified.”
