Myanmar's publicly mandated National Unity Government (NUG) has been carrying out a probe into the execution of a civilian by members of a resistance force under its command near Sagaing Region's border with India.

A video emerged on social media in which around a dozen armed men and women are seen beating a woman before shooting her dead in the middle of a road.

Naing Htoo Aung, secretary of the NUG's defence ministry, told Myanmar Now that the incident happened in the town of Tamu in June and that at least some of the alleged perpetrators belonged to the 4th Battalion of the Tamu District chapter of the anti-junta People's Defence Force (PDF).

He said that the ministry is investigating the killing and has directed the battalion commander to place three members who were involved—two men and one woman—in detention.

Further details regarding both the probe and how the NUG will take action against the other PDF members seen in the video were still unclear at the time of reporting. Naing Htoo Aung also said that the ministry was not aware of the incident prior to the video's circulation on social media.

The victim in the more than three minutes of footage was identified as 25-year-old Aye Mar Tun. Members of the resistance force are seen repeatedly punching her in the head, kicking her, pulling her hair and hitting her with a rifle butt, all while she is handcuffed.

Her face swollen, she is seen crying and begging them to stop.

A woman slaps her and orders her to admit she was an informant.

To this she replies, “I wasn't,” before her speaking becomes inaudible due to the continued abuse.

One of the armed individuals is heard saying to another member who attacked her, “You don't need to punch her that much.”

He then says to the victim, “You like money that much, huh?” in a reference to the allegation that she had worked for the military.

After the beating, the perpetrators blindfold Aye Mar Tun by placing a black face mask over her eyes, and remove her handcuffs. They then order her to kneel in the middle of a road and to put both of her hands behind her head.

Using a rifle, a member of the group then shoots her once from behind at close range, only the barrel of the gun visible in the video's frame. Aye Mar Tun immediately falls forward. The gunman then walks over to her body, and, standing over her, shoots her in the head four more times, leaving her skull visibly broken.

At this point, the footage ends.

“We cannot accept such a hideous [crime]. Even if they want to take action against the woman, it must be in line with the code of conduct or they must form a tribunal,” the NUG's Naing Htoo Aung said.

A man has been charged with second-degree murder in the killing and Schmidt said she would like the charge upped to first-degree murder, which requires proof of premeditation, to ensure a longer stay in prison if he's convicted. Schmidt said her son's fiancée, Ashley Umali, told her she was inside getting drinks while Paul and daughter Erica in a stroller waited outside the café at Granville and West Pender streets.

Paul's website include many photos of his young family and in his intro to the page, he had written: “I love Ashley and Erica Schmidt.”

Schmidt is Vancouver's sixth homicide victim of 2023.

A 25-year-old ex-con was shot to death outside a Queens deli during an argument with his killer, police said Tuesday.

Joseph Valdez got into an quarrel with a man who pulled out a gun and opened fire outside the store on 21st St. near 41st Ave. in Astoria about 10 p.m. Monday, cops said. Valdez suffered three gunshot wounds to the arm and upper body.

Medics rushed Valdez to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell, but he could not be saved.

The gunman ran off and is being sought.

Valdez, who lived in upper Manhattan, was convicted of attempted murder in Manhattan in 2015 and sentenced to up to five years in state prison, records show.

After his release, he was arrested in August 2020 when officers in the Bronx stopped him for jaywalking and found a gun on him, according to police. He was sent back to prison and paroled a year later.

The use of acid as a weapon began to rise in many developing nations, specifically those in South Asia. Since then, research has witnessed an increase in the quantity and severity of acid attacks in the region. The first known instance of an acid attack occurred in East Pakistan in 1967. According to the Acid Survivors Foundation, up to 150 attacks occur every year. The foundation reports that the attacks are often the result in an escalation of domestic abuse, and the majority of victims are female.

An acid attack, also called acid throwing, vitriol attack, or vitriolage, is a form of violent assault involving the act of throwing acid or a similarly corrosive substance onto the body of another "with the intention to disfigure, maim, torture, or kill". Perpetrators of these attacks throw corrosive liquids at their victims, usually at their faces, burning them, and damaging skin tissue, often exposing and sometimes dissolving the bones. Acid attacks can lead to permanent, partial, or complete blindness.

The most common types of acid used in these attacks are sulfuric and nitric acid. Hydrochloric acid is sometimes used but is much less damaging. Aqueous solutions of strongly alkaline materials, such as caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) or ammonia, are used as well, particularly in areas where strong acids are controlled substances.

The long-term consequences of these attacks may include blindness, as well as eye burns, with severe permanent scarring of the face and body, along with far-reaching social, psychological, and economic difficulties.

Today, acid attacks are reported in many parts of the world, though more commonly in developing countries. Between 1999 and 2013, a total of 3,512 Bangladeshi people were attacked with acid, with the rate of cases declining by 15–20% every year since 2002 based on strict legislation against perpetrators and regulation of acid sales. In India, acid attacks are at an all-time high and increasing every year, with 250–300 reported incidents every year, while the "actual number could exceed 1,000, according to Acid Survivors' Trust International".

Although acid attacks occur all over the world, this type of violence is most common in South Asia. Statistics from Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI) suggest that 80% of victims worldwide are women.

Topless mother is killed when she smashes her head into a lamp post while hanging out of a car window during holiday in Dominican Republic

A Russian woman has died in the Dominican Republic after a car accident which involved her hanging out of the window on the passenger side while the driver recorded her on a mobile phone.

Natalia Borodina, 35, from Moscow, had taken her bikini off and was playing up to the camera, hauling her top half out of the car window while a friend was driving.

The shocking video sees the mother-of-one letting her upper body hang out of the window of the moving car, before she hits a lamp post.

The video was recorded on a highway near Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic.

It was filmed by Ms Borodina's friend Ivanna Boirachuk, 32, who is believed to have been driving the car.

Ms Borodina is naked, bar a pair of bikini bottoms, when she decides to hang out of the window.

She playfully sticks her finger in her mouth and laughs at the camera, but within seconds, the video shows impact.

Russian media reports that Ms Borodina was rushed to hospital and died there of 'serious injuries'.

'The woman was having fun demonstrating her naked breasts while her companion drove the car,' reported Moskovsky Komsomolets.

It is understood Ms Borodina's child, a boy aged around eight, was on holiday with her in the Dominican Republic.

Ms Borodina is originally from Zlatoust, an industrial city in the Urals, but then moved to regional capital Chelyabinsk, before relocating to Moscow.

Recently she had been working in Cannes, France as an estate agent, selling properties to wealthy Russian buyers.

Friends said that her family is aware of her appalling death.
