EFFORTPOST Livestreamed Mass Attacks

Hello there! I decided to put together all info I could find on particular livestreamed mass attacks and livestreamed crime in general, with added information on the cases. I hope you'll enjoy it, it took me a lot! but anyways, let's start:

Christchurch mosque shootings

Everybody here probably already knows about these shootings but to sum it up: On the 15th March 2019, a 28 year old, nazi, chud retard called Brenton Tarrant committed two consecutive shootings in two mosques, Masjid-Al-Noor and the Linswood Islamic Center of Christchurch, New Zealand. The gunman killed 51 people and injured another 49, all of which were muslims. The attacks were livestreamed on Facebook, along a manifesto written by Tarrant named The Great Replacement, to inspire other far-right extremists to carry out shootings in a similair vein to the Christchurch ones. The livestream isn't the full terrorist attack, as it was taken down before he could reach the 2nd mosque, but it still contains the entire first attack and his escape. Tarrant was then arrested and is currently sentencing a life sentence with no possibility of parole.

Halle synagogue shooting

Christchurch inspired many other shooters, as it intended, and fortunately many of them failed, such as Gemany's biggest cuck: Stephen Balliet. On the 9th October 2019, this dumbass tried to use homemade guns with some 3D printed parts to commit a shooting in the synagogue of Halle, Saxony-Anhalt in Germany. As you may expect, it went horribly, as he wasn't able to enter the synagogue and instead he killed a random old lady on the street and a dude in a kebab store. Stephen was livestreaming on Twitch and also released a shitty manifesto which is the type of manifesto an edgy 14 year old would make. Balliet was arrested and is currently serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison.

2022 Buffalo shooting

Yet another shooting livestream inspired by Christchurch, this time by a furstrag neo-nazi who shot up a Top's Friendly Market in Buffalo, New York, which is a primarily black neighborhood; The retard once again released a manifesto called The Way Forward, which is literally a copy and paste of Brenton Tarrant's manifesto. He was able to kill 10 people and injure another 3, while sparing everybody in the store who was white. the event was livestreamed on Twitch, just like Balliet, but the livestream cuts out while he's in the supermarket and unfortunately for us gore fans there is no full version of the attack. (there's also a longer version which just includes him driving for a bit longer, check out this post to watch it https://watchpeopledie.tv/h/shooting/post/22653/buffalo-mass-shooting-full-livestream-video)

Jacksonville Landing shooting

This shooting occured on the 26th August 2018, when David Katz lost at tournament for the title of Madden 7 champion of 2018; Since he won the former championship, he raged from being beaten and pulled out a FUCKING GUN, shooting and killing the player who beat him and another player, all the while injuring 10 other people before committing suicide. The event was livestreamed on Twitch, as that's where the tournament was digitally taking place, but the camera cut out as soon as Katz started shooting, so, you can only hear the audio.

Nakhon Ratchasima shootings

A mass shooting that occured in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, when an ex-soldier called Jakrapanth Thomma went schizo mode and decided to steal a few machine guns from a military camp after killing his own commander, and then continuing the rampage by shooting people on the road and setting fire to mall. While all of this occured, he decided it would be a good idea to post updates on his Facebook account and to also livestream the event: unfortunately the full livestream has been lost but I was able to find a few screenshots from it and also his Facebook update posts. Thomma was shot and killed by the police a few hours later.

2022 Memphis shootings

On the 7th September 2022, a dumb Memphis BIPOC called Ezekiel Kelly went outside of his house and starting a shooting spree in which he killed three people and injured another three, while livestreaming on Facebook. You can't really see shit on the video because the dumbass just livestreamed his face while rambling incomprehensible nonsense. Kelly has been arrested by the police and he is currently being convicted.

Eslöv school attack

Another failed Brenton Tarrant copycat, but this time by an edgy 15 year old Swedish nazi named Hugo Jackson. Being a minor he didn't have access to any firearms, so, instead he used a knife to go in his school in Eslöv, Sweden, and stab a random teacher. He wasn't able to unjure anybody else other than that teacher who survived, and the police was called on him... which he tried to threaten with an airsoft pistol. He was arrested and is facing charges for attempted murder in a juvenile correction camp for 2.5 years. One of my friends has actually had the pleasure displeasure of talking with Hugo, and he has confirmed that he is a huge strag who types like a 2000s scenecore kid and uses ":3" when talking to people; To my knowleadge he also constantly gets bullied in the correction center for being a pussy. Unfortunately for us, the police owns the livestream and hasn't released it completely, but I was able to find a few still frames from the livestream.

edit: Hello! I wanted to add another livestreamed shooting that I missed before, I find this one to be a really good case since it ended pretty quickly.

West Freeway Church of Christ shooting

On the 29th December 2019, a schizoid called Keith Kinnunen entered the West Freeway Church of Christ dressed up as Not Important after playing a bit too much Hatred. He pulled out a shotgun after the ceremony and shot dead 2 people in the church, before being quickly dispatched by 71 year old Jack Wilson, who was volunteering as a security guard. the event was livestreamed on YouTube, since the church regularly livestreamed their ceremonies on their channel. I really just wanted to add this shooting in to praise the defender WIlson for his swift action and good aim under all that pressure. Remember: the only person who can stop a bad guy with a gun... is a good guy with a gun!

Hope you enjoyed all of the info I was able to gather and put together! I would've also added the Louisville bank shooting but there's literally no footage known of that shooting other than the CCTV footage and police bodycam, not even screencaps, sorry! Anyways, that's all for today, see ya!

Old man died while having sex

None

Above, you see a part of the last photo of the victim. Her father took it right before she left to celebrate her first New Year's Eve outside home, in a club. In Poland, a moratorium on executions was issued in 1988, and the death penalty was removed from the penal code in 1997. For some people here currently arguing against death penalty in case of wrongful conviction, Tomasz Komenda is a 'poster boy'. [there will be edits]

TL;DR. Story takes place in Lower Silesia (SW Poland). 15 yo Małgorzata Kwiatkowska - I'll later use disminutive - was spending New Year's Eve in the club in the nearby village, with her friend. The next day, 1st of January 1997, parents reported her missing after asking people around; friend didn't know her whereabouts, too. Separately, police received info about an unknown dead girl laying naked on someone's property, near the barn. It was determined that she was raped with a blunt object or e.g. fist - enough to cause internal injuries. There were bite marks on the body. The victim was left alive in the freezing cold (around -16 C, or 3 F), heavily beaten, eventually dying of internal bleeding and, mostly, hypothermia. Police determined that 2 or 3 people participated. Three years later, someone reported that Tomasz Komenda seems like the man on the sketch; police didn't look for that one or two more suspects. Komenda was arrested and charged in April/May 2000, and in 2004 - sentenced for 25 years. He attempted suicide three times, and was harassed both by the other inmates and prison guards. In total, after spending 18 years imprisoned, he was released on parole in March 2018, and acquitted two months later. The gov compensation for the wrongful conviction was the highest ever paid in Poland - 13 million zloty (around €2,9 mln or $3,25 mln). Two men were sentenced in 2021. Apart from the reported DNA tests results, there's either vague or barely any evidence pointing at them. The investigation was messy since the beginning. Many witnesses, of which one is now convicted, were threatened by both the police and unknown people - up to death threats. This isn't really a solved case.

Sections go as follows:

  1. Crime scene video and photos. The body is always blurred or covered, in case of the video - it's not perfectly covered, but you won't see any details of the injuries. Descriptions of the injuries are partially released.

  2. What happened on New Year's Eve? - with maps and aerial view for comparision. Includes descriptions of the injuries, and of the crime scene (these important for you to imagine how the events could go).

  3. How to make a killer on paper. Apart from vague evidence, things not matching in Komenda's testimonies were also overlooked. It doesn't even make sense a made-up story.

  4. Old evidence, old witnesses, new suspects. There are two guys convicted for now. Both claim they're innocent, but talk about it in completely different ways. I also included here a description of the impact that wrongful conviction had on Tomasz, including videos from the acquittal.

⠀CRIME SCENE VIDEO AND PHOTOS :marseyjourno:

Crime scene video is included here without any edits. It was already uploaded with the partially censored body (and the ambient in the background, for these complaining about music in any video). Timestamps:

1;30 - general view for the neighbourhood ends, police officer(s) and one specialist(?) enter the property.

2;10 onwards - cameraman reaches the point, from which the body was visible.

2;35 onwards - Spot 1, a piece of clothing. Filmed from various angles and in close-up.

3;10 - Spot 2, where the body was found. Comment in the backround about the buttons found, and pointing at places where the blouse and (not visible) the cap were found.

3;30 - cameraman is told to record a bloody smudge on the steel bar.

4;10 - I can't hear it well, but probably there's a blouse pointed at Spot 3.

Before 4;30 - camera moves to Spot 5, where a wristwatch was found, and two shoelaces. I can't tell if either of these two is clearly visible, but both were mentioned.

4;45 - now, cameraman is asked to film Spot 5, where are two spots with fresh faeces (it's not stated in the video, but they were victim's one). A bloodstain and a shoelace are mentioned.

5;05 to 5;10 - pointing at the shred of clothing, which the man commenting assumes to be a part of the underwear.

5;30 - finally a good view on the wristwatch.

6;10 - cameraman is asked (and confirms) whether he'd recorded the general view. Officer tells him that he will turn the body now. Most of it is covered, but now you can see some of the injuries on legs.

6;25 to 6;35 - unclear, but there are blood spots mentioned, and that the exact injuries [topic] is left for later. I guess it's about recording them, instead of general view.

6;45 - closeup on legs. The socks will later turn out to be an important detail in one witness' testimony.

7;30 - cameraman stops focusing on things laying on the ground, and the general view for another part of the property (deeper into it) is shown till the end...

...at 8;10. The sound is cut, but in the last part muted here, this guy told the cameraman that there are shreds of a black lace clothing.

It's around 90 MB, if it's not loading for you, try to wait a while or just download to your device!

What you should pay attention to when watching above video, as it will be important later (mostly when describing how the crime scene shows some events' aftermath):

  1. The socks, already mentioned.

  2. Girl's hair being tangled and messed up (it's not visible here, but some stuff was entangled in them).

  3. She is lying on her dress.

  4. Barn's wall, not only the steel bar or these crates.

  5. How wide apart are her body and the pieces of evidence.

Not all crime scene photos are released, at least few were shown in videos or (rarely) separately.

13th. A spot when the wristwatch was found.

⠀BOŻENA H. :marseyunamused:

Here, a few black and white photos from the on-site investigation. Click to enlarge. These photos aren't relating to Małgosia, but to Bożena H., who was sexually assaulted in Jelcz-Laskowice (around 3 km from Miłoszyce) on 11th of August 1996 by two men. The first wanna-be rapist was scared by another guy, who pretended to be helpful and wishing to assist her on a way back, but raped her instead. One of them was possibly the same perpetrator that assaulted Małgosia. Tomasz Komenda was wrongfully convicted also for this crime in December 2004, and acquitted a few years later.

1st and 2nd. A scene near the holiday resort in Jelcz-Laskowice. It shows the spot where a red Fiat 126-P was parked, and - in the second photo - where Bożena H. received blow to the head, then was walked to the side road.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/wkyj63gs.jpg

3rd and 4th. First - the same scene as in Photo 2, with the concrete slabs visible. Second - close-up of this spot, the name of the street from which the photo was taken isn't visible.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/ld2b975i.jpg

5th and 6th. The same scene like in Photo 4, with the first rape scene marked with circle. Then, around 300 m from this spot, there's a second rape scene (it was a second guy, who played her 'rescuer').

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/fqm0vzp2.jpg

7th and 8th. Here, the woman shows the spot when the red Fiat was parked, and where rape attempt took place.

⠀WHAT HAPPENED ON NEW YEAR'S EVE :marseycryinglaptop:

First, general map. 1 - Miłoszyce, 2 - Jelcz Laskowice, 3 - Gajków, 4 - Plac Grunwaldzki (tram and bus station in Wrocław, will be important later in this story), 5 - Piekary.

How it looks like on Google Maps (red circles are the entrances):

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/yh1nmjhp.png

Property the body was found at is on Kościelna 5 street, and the former 'Alcatraz' club - on Główna 7A street. Here's a sketch of the crime scene, hard to read, though.

Drone view on this household today:

Former Alcatraz club:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/h9a4ru9x.png

Due to the angles, snow and changes over the years, I had problems figuring out what is where in that crime scene video. Also, the sketch of the crime scene is unclear, looks like the barn is drawn as a one building with that right behind it. It's not, you can see it in the video, e.g. around 7;52. You can see there how the other building's wall is aligned, just like in the drone view.

Descriptions of the injuries were often scattered in the sources I've found. One mentioned that the exact description of the injuries spanned over a few pages. I don't know whether it was an overexaggeration. Instead of a wall of text, have the most important parts listed. Keep in mind that it's simplified and the exact medical terms could be different.

  1. There are multiple body parts mentioned, on which there were single scratches or abrasions of the epidermis and bruises (ecchymoses?) - either bloody or not. I.e. face, upper arms, chest, pelvic area, lower back, buttocks, legs (without precizing, apart from right thigh, check point 3).

  2. Scratches or abrasions in the chest area and on right arm, which pattern looked like a bite marks.

  3. On a right thigh, there was a bloody abrasion in a pattern similar to a shoe print. It was specifically described as an assault boot or other heavy ones (like in police or military).

  4. Some pubic hair ripped out, leaving bloody spots.

  5. Rupture of soft tissues between the vagina and rectum. Its extent (like in cm from the either opening) wasn't mentioned. It caused a severe internal bleeding.

  6. Extensive bloody bruisings (ecchymoses) and a rupture of the vaginal mucous membrane. Also, a bruisings of the mucous membrane and wall of the rectum, and a rupture of a rectal mucous membrane.

  7. Injuries were inflicted with a blunt or blunt-edged objects, including ones in the genital area. It could include fingers or a hand (fist).

  8. The victim could have been dragged across the ground, possibly it's when the clothes and shoes were taken off.

  9. Samples were taken from the oral cavity, vagina, and rectum. No samples were taken from under the nails, even though there were clearly signs of struggle, and the victim was probably trying to fight back or defend herself.

Few remarks on the crime scene.

  1. On the victim's face, chest and arms, there were a greyish, earthy stains, and on her cheek and mouth - dried smudge (color not mentioned).

  2. In her hair, there were entangled 'large quantities of' dried plant stalks, sticks, pieces of bark, and a single feathers (probably from the poultry), and pieces of the silver chain.

  3. Black tights were 1,5 m from the body, and partially torn blouse - 2,5 m from the body.

  4. On the back of the barn, around 2,5 m from the back corner, there was an oblong spot on the ground with thinner snow layer, in which were traces of grass / soil substrate and bloody stains.

  5. Around 1 m from the spot mentioned above, closer to the barn, there were faeces. Close to them, a Q&Q analog watch was found, and a shoelace next to it.

  6. Two empty vodka bottles and a black lace hanky were found 'close to the crime scene'.

  7. 1,2 to 1,5 m up on the barn's wall, close to where body was found, hair were found stuck on planks and between them.

  8. Close to the hair found on the barn's wall, there were smudges containing pieces of soil, sand, straw, grass and hair fragments.

  9. Victim's shoes and silver jewelry wasn't found both on the crime scene and on neighbouring properties (including houses and the maintenance rooms).

Józef R. was confused about the body found (below is a photo of the exact spot). He claimed that someone who left it there must have been local, as a stranger wouldn't know about this shortcut. A classic 'but...' - but he was living here since a child, and thought that no criminals or rapists able to do this were living in the area.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/vkx88o01.png

It's not clear for how long Małgosia was dying, and the given values are contradicting. I assume it's expected when they're based on different exams. The widest span mentioned was 1 to 8 hours. However, another source states that the victim could have been saved if medical intervention took place up to 2 or 3 hours after she was left alone. According to the expert witness, the perpetrators were either motivated by sadistic tendencies, or by their sexual incapability. The latter scenario was more common, and, quoting: 'a brutal treatment of the assaulted woman, including the possibility of taking her life, can be - and quote often is - caused by the temporary sexual incapability, usually being a result of the alcohol influence and a stress caused by the given situation'. I haven't seen a mention of how the roles could look like, considering there were at least 2 or 3 assailants.

⠀JUST A WALL OF TEXT ABOUT SOME TESTIMONIES... :marseyschizowall:

The description of the injuries is far easier to write than how Małgosia even left the club, according to the witnesses. Two of them, Krzysztof K. and Andrzej W. (whose credibility is vague) claimed that she was walked out by Irek, who told them he's her brother. She didn't have a brother. It's unclear whether it was 100% the same Irek as later convicted Ireneusz M., assuming it did happen. The other witnesses point out that it was Krzysztof K. who left with her... And you will see later he is both important and not fully reliable witness. Around 0;20 AM, friends of Małgosia (not precized how many of them) had seen her last time. Reportedly, at this time, she was already spending time with Krzysztof K., a local guy, whom she met in the club first time. They'd left outside 3 or 4 times, as Małgosia was feeling nauseous and started vomiting. Iwona, a 'main' friend coming with her, noticed that Małgosia disappeared around 1;00 AM, and started to look for her. Nobody knew where she is, and Iwona left the club after taking the girl's coat from the cloakroom. She was last time seen between 1;00 AM and 1;20 AM, leaving the club without the overcoat, only wearing dress. Reportedly, that's when Krzysztof K. left with her - he claims it was some Irek, claiming to be Małgosia's brother. These two moved towards the building's corner, on the Główna street side. According to Krzysztof K. himself, it was an hour earlier than the others had stated.

Krzysztof K. was arrested three days after the murder. He was considered a suspect, and his testimonies were - putting it shortly - both weirdly accurate (like he had seen the crime himself) and variable. He was beaten on a police station, too. At first, Krzysztof K. admitted to walking Małgosia out from the club, then entering the R. family property with her, undressing the girl and assaulting her. In the meanwhile, she was resisting, calling her mum and screaming to leave her alone; after all, Krzysztof K. reportedly moved her to another spot near the barn. His sketch of the crime scene was weirdly accurate. Then, he changed testimonies to the scenario with some Irek walking her out. And changed them again later. There was reportedly no evidence on-spot, including the DNA tests results (the old ones, though) excluding him. After one of the questionings, he ended up in hospital with brain concussion. The main prosecutor, same one responsible for the murder investigation, refused to start the investigation on the authority abuse. A police officer had just hit 16 yo Krzysztof K. on the back of the head 'in the heat of the moment', and the harm to society wasn't great enough to care.

Another photo than in the thumbnail, to break this wall of text :marseywink:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/bkqu6itp.png

Around 1;35 AM (sometimes an earlier time is given), one of the R. family's neighbours' daughters heard girl screaming Mum, mum! (assumed by the prosecution to be Małgosia). It was Agnieszka N., the same daughter, who after midnight left for a while with her boyfriend. They drove to Jelcz-Laskowice, to visit friends and wish them a happy New Year. Shortly after their departure, her sister Krystyna N. had seen two guys, between whom was walking a girl around 16-17 yo, weirdly lightly clothed as for the freezing cold. She specifically mentioned that these were two men and a girl looking down. Krystyna N. had in general given weirdly detailed description. Agnieszka N., who was in the car (so much closer to these group), claimed that she wasn't even sure how many people were there, and couldn't tell their gender. This group was walking along the Ogrodowa street. According to Krystyna N., looking through the window 7 to 10 m from these people, one guy was about the girl's height. The second one was slightly taller and had a bowl cut. Andrzej W. claimed that the man picking Małgosia up as 'her brother' had a bowl cut. I will spare you more details, just know that Andrzej W. claimed it was before midnight (so when people were either watching the fireworks or rushing home to do so) - contrary to the other witnesses - and his testimonies were in general inconsistent. And why was the haircut important, apart from connecting the non-existent brother with one of the guys walking the girl along the Ogrodowa street? Neither of these guys was wearing a cap. On a crime scene, there was a black cap found. If these were the future perpetrators walking with the girl, then - considering it was around -16 C or 3 F outside - it would be odd for them to not wear a cap, if they had one.

Apart from Agnieszka N., there was also unprecized P., who had heard some girl calling for help. Time wasn't given exactly, and the distance from his home to the R. family's property was around 100 m. P. thought that it must had been Józef R. beating at least one daughter, so didn't react. Apart from the N. family, there was also C. family living right next to the property where the murder took place. Surprisingly, no one from this family heard any screams or other sounds of struggle.

⠀HOW TO MAKE A KILLER ON PAPER :marseyretard2:

Tomasz Komenda was born in July 1976. He had a poor health, due to being born prematurely. According to the mother, Teresa Klemańska, it was because of the physical abuse by her ex-husband, Jerzy, whom he left when pregnant. Father-in-law, Mirosław, is described as a man raising Tomasz like his own son. Tomasz has finished special school, receiving primary education. He was working at the car wash, enjoying and often getting tips. There are three brothers: youngest Krzysztof, then Piotr (6 yo when Tomasz was imprisoned) and Gerard (the oldest one).

⠀POLICE SKETCH :marseycrayoneater:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/sw5ld54x.jpg

In 1999, the authorities were contacted by Dorota P., who claimed that she recognizes the man from the police sketch. There are few versions - some say media, some say newspaper, and other mention that she saw it in Magazyn Kryminalny 997 and contacted the police few days later. This couldn't happen, MK 997 never described this case. I spent a while searching for this episode, which was reportedly aired when she was throwing a party because of her name day. There are four dates to choose from, from the early February to the early September. None of the episodes matching them mention Komenda. Later, I've found out in one source that Dorota indeed made up this story. TV series mentioning this case was Telewizyjne Biuro Śledcze (episode 30, from 1998), there were no graphic details, too. According to Komenda's mother, Dorota P. once threatened her with 'doing something that would make her cry, so she remembers'. She was often leaving her son to babysit, and Komenda's mother complained it's too often. Even though Dorota P. claimed she knew Tomasz, that he had a girlfriend named Małgosia of the similar age (and also living in Jelcz-Laskowice), and that he was sometimes aggressive, she couldn't really know him well. They could at last see each other on the staircase, as Dorota P. was a neighbour of Komenda's grandmother. She claimed years later that she has 'only' pointed at him, and the man from police sketch could be as well his brother or father-in-law. Miłoszyce residents were questioned, but none of them recognized either of these three men - contrary to what Dorota P. said. She suddenly died in June 2018 and didn't manage to testify in a case regarding authority abuse.

Tomasz Komenda was questioned first time on 16th of November 1999, when the police search was conducted in his home, starting from 7;15 AM. On 18th of April 2000, he was already questioned as a suspect - this is sometimes incorrectly mentioned as the first hearing. When Komenda was questioned, he didn't even know there's a town called Jelcz-Laskowice. He admitted to having an intercourse with some randomly met girl, in a wood patch near the club - but there was no wood patch. Few people, including his mother and one woman not called for a witness, claimed that he spent New Year's Eve 1996/1997 in the family home.

So, to sum up what didn't match in Komenda's testimonies (on various times):

  1. Consensual intercourse in a non-existent woodpatch,

  2. Visiting a town that he didn't know existed.

  3. Taking a bus from Plac Grunwaldzki (go back to the cities map) to Gajków on New Year's Eve 1996/1997, when no buses were going on this route.

  4. Timeline that would require time travel. It was impossible for Tomasz to leave home around 2 AM and be back between 6;00 and 6;30 AM, if things went as described (next paragraph).

  5. He 'did' that all in Miłoszyce, while 12 witnesses provided him alibi for that night, which he spent in Wrocław. Somehow they were not convincing. The only guest that saw Komenda home back then and didn't drink alcohol wasn't called as a witness.

  6. He was also sentenced to 4 years for raping Bożena (go back to the first section). He didn't recognize her, and the second rapist (playing her 'rescuer') didn't recognize Tomasz as the first assailant.

About the timeline. In 'his' testimonies, Tomasz 'claimed' he left home around 2 AM, took the bus to Gajków (to visit his friend, Tomasz S.), and arrived around 3 AM. Then this friend told Komenda about a New Year's Eve party in the club in Miłoszyce, and they two walked there for around 30 mins. Here's why this timeline's impossible - it's around 8 km (5 mil) in straight line, and 10-12 km in a walking distance. Two guys finishing 10K in 30 mins - during a winter night and while being drunk - would for sure put them among the elite runners. Around 30 mins (or few mins less, depends on the criteira) are the current world records for 10K. According to the 'official' timeline, Tomasz S. had spent half an hour in the club, and left Tomasz Komenda alone. That would mean he left at unknown time, but after 4;00 AM. Then, Komena would meet some 'Kasia', accompany her till the club closing - it closed around 4;30 AM - and have an intercourse outside on the ground, in a non-existent woodpatch. Then, he 'walked' back to Gajków, and travelled back to Wrocław by the bus, arriving between 6 AM and 6;30 AM.

Why did he change initial testimonies to the above story?

In the record of evidence from 16th of November 1999, I didn't describe the above-mentioned circumstances [as a witness], because I was afraid of the police. I can't explain this, I am simply afraid of the police.

And:

Later, Tomasz Komenda withdrew his testimonies and claimed, that he was never in Miłoszyce and didn't know any Małgorzata K. He claimed that he was forced to say so by [the cops] beating him. He had been mentioning this beatings multiple times, even saying in front of the cameras in 2006, that he was beaten so heavily, that he would even confess to murdering a Pope, if it would make them stop.

It wasn't mentioned in the quoted testimonies, but in the second book mentioned in the sources at the end, the author claims that 'staying till the end' (in the club) meant staying till the 6 AM, maybe 7 AM. I don't know why it's stated so. I think that the author could assume, that by 'staying till the end' Komenda meant 'stayed till the morning'. In the common sense, indeed, winter mornings are rather around 6 or 7 AM, not precizely 4;30 AM, and partying till the morning would mean club closed around given hours.

Not only does this timeline make no sense (and these testimonies, obtained under duress), but also joining them with the testimonies of Tomasz S. Who, by the way, wasn't Komenda's friend, but his employer. He claimed that he didn't meet Komenda that day. Nobody looked for this Kasia, apparently assuming, that the unknown Katarzyna - having a consensual intercourse with one man - must have been Małgorzata - assaulted and left for death by 2 or 3 men. I will skip the rest of the testimonies, sometimes making it better, sometimes worse for Komenda, as together with the screwed up investigation, that's actually a topic for a whole book.

It's also worth mentioning that the Krzysztof K. mentioned some time ago was considered by the specialists to not be a reliable witness, due to the mental state he was in. Authorities didn't have a similar problem with Tomasz Komenda, who had finished special school and has a mild degree of intellectual disability. Both guys were beaten by the cops, too, and in both cases it officially didn't happen. Last part of this section is the other evidence :marseyretardnotes:

  1. DNA was extracted from the hair, stuck inside a black woolen cap found on the crime scene (for reference, Komenda's blood was used). Polymarker tests were conducted. They focus on specific DNA sequences (markers), which are long and poorly differentiated. Even back then, it wasn't a modern method. It shouldn't be used both when analyzing a sample from hair and when it's not sure whether the evidence comes from one person or more. It was analyzed in Wrocław. Three years later, it suddenly turned out that in Jelcz-Laskowice police station, there were more hair kept as an evidence, but sent to Bydgoszcz (not Wrocław) for analyzis. This time, it was mtDNA analyzis, which was pointless, and could only check whether the victim's and witnesses' or suspects' had the same mother. It was pointless, especially considering that this evidence was destroyed, so couldn't be use later for more meaningful testing.

  2. Osmological expertise, using the scent samples obtained from the mentioned woolen cap, checked by two dogs in March 2000. This wasn't recorded, even though videotaping such exams was reportedly already a common practice back then. The method used for sampling wasn't strictly matching the police guidelines. The dog handler was reportedly licensed, but not an expert. It's also unknown in what conditions the cap and samples were kept. Jars containing the scent-soaked swabs were also opened and closed again 'multiple times'.

  3. Bite marks. Shortly saying, the pattern could match Tomasz Komenda or someone else. The latter scenario was overlooked. Among the 'someone else' was also Marcin Ł., a son of local businessman, who was 'unofficially' mentioned by a few witnesses (including the incognito witness), and he will be mentioned in the next section again. Back then, it was excluded that the pattern could belong to Ireneusz M., who is currently convicted for this murder. Why it's not excluding him now, it's not known.

The charges differed from what Tomasz Komenda was sentenced to 15 years for, and what was he lated sentenced to 25 years for. They also differ from what he was told he will be tried for. Have Wikipedia quote first (article about Polish Penal Code):

Three different types of homicide are foreseen by articles 148, 149 and 150 of the Code. Article 148 Sec. 1 describes the penalty for the basic type of the crime. It is penalized by no less than 8 years of imprisonment, 25 years' imprisonment or life imprisonment. Sections 2 and 3 introduce a more strict sentencing in cases of particular cruelty, using firearms or explosives, taking hostages, raping, robbery, multiple victims or relapse. In these cases the minimal imprisonment period rises to 12 years.

Tomasz Komenda was at first for rape with exceptional cruelty and for battery resulting in death. I'm not sure if anything similar exists in US or UK laws. Either battery or aggravated battery applies to the situations where there was no intent to kill or death (AFAIK, please correct in the comments if this is bullshit). In Poland, there's pobicie ze skutkiem śmiertelnym, which is a different crime than homicide (falls under Article 158 - battery).

In October 2001, Tomasz Komenda was told he will be tried for Article 197, Sec.1. In November 2003, he was sentenced in relation to Article 197, Sec. 2. Reportedly, he was told that the exact qualification of his crime may be changed, but no more details. Apart from homicide, he was sentenced for rape - Article 197, Sec. 3, not precized further, but it'd be Sec. 3, Point 1 (together with another person - which, like you already know, police didn't look for). Małgosia was exactly 15 years and (nearly) 2 months old when she died. In Poland, the age of consent is 15 yo, so technically this rape didn't qualify as raping a child (or: minor under 15 yo). In June 2004, the sentence was raised to 25 years.

⠀OLD EVIDENCE, OLD SURNAMES, NEW SUSPECTS :marseyfacepalm:

Currently, two people are serving time for the rape and homicide - mainly the latter, as rape has already fallen under the statute of limitations. I guess you won't be surprised. It could have been one that walked Małgosia out the club. It's not 100% clear whether it was the same Irek, though - only two witnesses claimed so. The second one convicted for now was a club guard and a barman that night. Both the police and prosecution assume there was a third perpetrator, but no arrests were made as for now.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/a52im84s.png

Ireneusz Matuszak (becoming a suspect in June 2017, charges brought in December 2018) was, at the time of the arrest, already serving time for a sexual assault. He was convicted over time for 5 rapes on three different women. They're described as women 'he was providing for' (in what way - not specified) and they've been having consensual intercourses, too. He told one of the journalist he didn't do it and why he even knows about the charges (reply: because of getting access to the case files). About the murder in Miłoszyce, same. He didn't allow the media to show his face and release the full name. The detail pointing at him was his mention of the socks Małgosia was wearing. According to the prosecution, if she was wearing black tights over the socks, someone who didn't undress her shouldn't notice them. The ultimate proof is claimed to be the DNA test results. Some testimonies may point at him. But if all the witnesses were telling the truth, then their testimonies can't form a meaningful story.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/pwcwn45p.png

Norbert Basiura was, at the time of the arrest, living a typical life. He has a wife, who believes in his innocence, one child, and was working as a firefighter. His attitude is the opposite of the first convict. Both claim they're innocent, but Norbert allowed for the media to both show face and use full name, and was very talkative and open. According to some - suspiciously open. Videos you can find online include him testifying, interviews, scenes with his wife, even driving with one news reporter across Miłoszyce and looking for the right household. Norbert claimed he had no idea which house this was, exactly, just roughly knowing its location. He was sober during that New Year's Eve, unlike Ireneusz. In 1997, when still considered a witness, Norbert was threatened by both the police and some undefined people. He told Małgosia's father about it, and (no date was given) mentioned him three men as important in this case. One of them was Marcin Ł., a son of local businessman, who was reportedly also thought to be involved by a few others Miłoszyce residents.

Initially, they were both sentenced to 25 years. For Norbert Basiura, it was changed to 15 years. Reportedly, the sperm samples were found on the victim's clothing, coming from both of the current convicts. Blood samples from both of them were also found. At least that's what DNA tests results say. In case of Norbert Basiura, the evidence is described as 'extremely strong', and in case of Ireneusz Matuszak, 'very strong' (strong as 'convincing').

⠀THE ACQUITTAL :marseywholesome:

Tomasz Komenda was let out on parole on 15th of March 2018, and acquitted on 16th of May 2018. Right in the beginning, you can see the reactions to declaring him innocent:

Another angle:

Here is a fragment on how Tomasz was transported, at the time when it was already known that the 'second suspect' was arrested (while Tomasz formally was still the first one).

[...] When [he was] driving into Wrocław, he couldn't recognize his city. When the prison cell doors closed behind him, there were no shopping malls, which now [car] was passing one by one. The monumental Sky Tower was also a novelty. Before he was jailed, skyscrapers didn't extend 100 m of height, even in Warsaw, and this one reached above 200 m. Every few kilometers, there was a petrol station. He only remembered CPN, but its logo was replaced by new names long ago. Pendolino going through the train overpass was nearly jaw-dropping. Tomasz had only seen such vehicles in sci-fi movies, when he was a free man. And the mobile phone, from which on regular speaker said: "Turn right 150 m ahead, then keep going straight. You've reached your destination". Tomek didn't know what was going on around, even though his mother and brothers were telling him that the world has been changing much. He has only seen innovations in TV. The old PlayStation 3 and FIFA, which he was playing in the evenings outside the prison cell, was all his modern technology.

Explanations: CPN, Centrala Produktów Naftowych, was a company operating between 1945 and 1999. SkyTower's height is 212 m in total. For Tomasz, it was one of the favorite spots in 'new' Wrocław, apart from the terraced housing around the main square, all renovated.

The above video may be not extraordinary, but this case is a twisted one. And sad.

TL;DR: in the morning on 18th of April 2018, the villagers of a jungle hamlet Victoria Gracia (eastern Peru) heard shots. 81 yo Olivia Arevalo Lomas, a local shaman - one of the most respected ones in Peruvian Amazon - was laying dead outside her house. Even though people there didn't trust the authorities, someone called them. Before cops even started to do their job, the local chose their suspect - 41 yo Sebastian Paul Woodroffe, a man from Canada, having trips to this area on regular. Local men strangled him to death. He was later pointed out as a main suspect by the police, but as the lynching was against the law, police searched for a four suspects. At least half a year later, they haven't been found. Why he did it - if the police and locals were right, of course - is partially unknown. However, he was really interested in spirituality and unconventional methods of healing. Over the past few weeks, his mental state went on downward spiral - ending up in both his and his healer's death.

If you'd like to know more about the spirituality and healing part, check the CBC coverage in the sources section at the end. There's a really interesting (and long) article 'Descend into darkness' about Sebastian's mental state worsening.

Sections go as follows:

1. Murder - about the incident and how was the victim remembered. There's no gore apart from her body photo. Includes info about the place and the tribe, also a map.

2. Lynching and arrests - self-explaining. Video attached to the post is here, too, on different hosting (if it's not working for you), also Sebastian's body.

3. But why? - about Sebastian's 'descend into darkness'. That's a story about what happens if you do ayahuasca while you shouldn't due to mental health issues. One big wall of text for these who like reading my longer posts with long stories ;]

Comments on the place and people:

Victoria Gracia, a village of indigenous Shipibo-Conibo people, in the remote Ucayali region of northeastern Peru

[...] Olivia Arévalo, meanwhile, was not only a grandmother figure to the villagers of Victoria Gracia but also a spiritual matriarch to the Shipibo-Conibo people—one of the largest tribes in the Peruvian Amazon, with 20,000 members, concentrated around the Ucayali River. The descendant of a long line of healers, she knew some 500 herbal remedies and was, to the younger villagers, one of the last links to their dying tribal culture.

The murder took place on 18th of April 2018 (Thursday). Villagers reported that they've heard three shots. There were no direct witnesses, though.

Police had found her lifeless body beneath a coconut tree, with two bullet holes in her chest and three spent .380 ACP cartridges a few yards away. The villagers had been emphatic that the killer was the “gringo.” But Woodroffe was nowhere to be found.

It was posted on Twitter with the following comment:

The 2nd Provincial Corporate Criminal Prosecutor's Office of Yarinacocha reported that the weapon used to murder Olivia Arévalo was found this morning and would correspond to the same weapon purchased by Canadian citizen Sebastian Paul Wooldrooffe on April 3.

On YouTube channel Temple of the Way of Light, there are a few videos featuring Arevalo, as she worked for the temple from 2009 to 2011. Below, there are two videos of her singing an icaro:

In South American Indigenous culture, an icaro is a healing chant. Sung by a curandero, or shaman, it is said the icaro channels medicinal spirits.

How was she remembered:

She was one of the most respected and powerful Onanya – a plant medicine healer – of the Shipibo tribe. She brought the rich cultural and medicinal legacy of the Shipibo to the Temple and was affectionally referred to by many of us as a “living ancestor”; a record keeper of the Shipibo ways and a walking encyclopedia of traditional Shipibo plant medicine. We are blessed and honored to have worked so closely with her, to have experienced her powerful healing abilities and to have been touched by a heart so full of love and compassion.

My wife Klara and I, and every single member of the Temple [of the Way of Light] community, are deeply saddened and shocked by the recent news of Olivia's death. Olivia was in essence one of the founding healers of the Temple, the oldest healer that we have worked with, and was monumental in seeding the healing work that we carry out to this day. She was an overwhelmingly sweet, gentle, fun, and loving woman who had the laughter of a child yet radiated an inconceivable level of wisdom that we will never forget. [...]

Olivia was buried on 22nd of April 2018. Her death was covered by many international and local news agencies. It shook not only the Peruvian community itself, but also the human rights activism one - as Olivia was advocating for the native people rights.

⠀LYNCHING AND ARRESTS :marseycop:

In the beginning of this video, you can see a recovery of Sebastian's body. Then, scenes from Olivia's funeral are shown.

The body when found and when carried away:

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/17028623996329112.webp https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/17028604708757997.webp https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/17028642889417424.webp

After viewing the clip, officers returned to Victoria Gracia, where they discovered Woodroffe's body about 700 yards from the village. Wrapped in a blue sheet, he had been buried hastily in a two-foot grave. His face was swollen. His body was purple with bruises. His clothes were coated in dirt and dried blood.

On 23rd of April 2018 (Monday), the judge ordered the arrests of two men involved in the lynching. Their identities were known, but not publicly mentioned. In the meanwhile, the investigators were figuring out who else took part in the mob killing. The news are vague when it comes to the arrest. There are news from both late April and early May 2018 stating that the suspects were arrested, but also that they're still on the run.

In the first days of May 2018, the investigators officially identified Sebastian as a main suspect.

Authorities say they found a document showing that Woodroffe bought a gun on April 3 from a police officer, according to Ricardo Jimenez, head of public prosecutors in Ucayali.

Jiminez also said a witness testified that a silver-coloured pistol fell from a backpack Woodroffe was carrying as locals of the remote Amazonian village grabbed him before the lynching.

Other evidence:

Bullet cartridges found near the body of Olivia Arevalo Lomas were traced back to a gun the 41-year-old B.C. man had purchased earlier in April, and gunpowder was found on his clothes, according to Ricardo Jimenez, chief prosecutor in the remote Ucayali province.

At least six months after the murders, the four suspects were still hiding.

[...] Carlos Vilcahuamán, the district prosecutor in Pucallpa charged with overseeing the investigation, told me that he was frustrated that the four suspects in Woodroffe's lynching, as identified in the grainy Facebook video, hadn't been apprehended. “They're still hiding in the jungle,” he said. His consolation was that he was sure of who'd killed Olivia Arévalo. “All the evidence points to Woodroffe firing those shots that day.”

⠀BUT WHY? :marseytears:

Both the more spiritual or personal scenarios and the more mundane ones were known since the beginning of the investigation.

Woodroffe had been Arevalo's patient and her family claims he killed her because she refused to conduct a ritual in which the hallucinogenic Amazonian plant brew ayahuasca is used for healing and spiritual growth, said Jimenez.

Authorities are exploring several hypotheses related to Arevalo's murder, including one in which another foreigner might have killed her over an unpaid debt, Jimenez said.

I will mostly stick to the quotes in this section of the post.

Steve Ellis, Woodroffe's ex-brother-in-law, recalled turning him on to ayahuasca after attending a ceremony in Whistler, B.C.

"I was interested in physics, quantum mechanics, atoms, energy, crystals," Ellis said. It was after connecting with a community of "open-minded individuals" that Ellis had his first ayahuasca experience. "It was a really scary and profound life-changing experience. I shared [the details] with Sebastian, and he was really interested in it."

By 2013, Woodroffe's fascination with Indigenous culture, plant medicines and ayahuasca — coupled with an intervention for a family member struggling with alcohol — led him to a life-changing decision.

"I've decided to leave my current career behind and in September 2014, I am starting school, beginning a 6 year process to become an addictions counsellor," he declared in an IndieGoGo appeal.

His first step on this new career path was to start a crowd-funding campaign to raise money so he could study plant medicine and take ayahuasca in the Peruvian Amazon.

In September 2014, Sebastian travelled to the Peruvian jungle city of Iquitos. He wanted to study under ayahuasca shaman Guillermo Arévalo (one of Olivia Arévalo's cousins). Guillermo recalled that Woodroffe was a good person, although one struggling with trauma. He didn't want to elaborate. After this trip, Woodroffe's desire to study the ayahuasca rituals more was only stronger. Over the next three years, Sebastian made several more trips to Peru, but also was taking part in illegal ceremonies near his hometown - specifically, in Comox (British Columbia).

Ayahuasca is a dark tea derived from mixing a leaf and a vine. The leaf, Psychotria viridis, contains dimethyltryptamine (DMT). Taken by itself, the leaf is benign, because enzymes in the stomach neutralize the DMT. But the Shipibo figured out hundreds of years ago that when the leaf is boiled down with the ayahuasca vine, Banisteriopsis caapi, it blocks those stomach enzymes, and creates a potent psychedelic brew.

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/1702867946513856.webp https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/17028679479273725.webp

In 2016 and 2017, Sebastian's posts on Facebook became more worrying. He claimed that he feels lonely and low, and want to be with friends. Scott Anderson, author of the 'Descent into darkness' article, managed to talk to some of the Sebastian's acquaintances. Some were pointing out that Sebastian was struggling after breaking up with his girlfriend (and being a single father again). Others claimed that his trips to Peru were causing problems. Matthew Bremner, another journalist, spoke to one of Sebastian's friends, who wanted to stay anonymous.

[...] said that Woodroffe was indeed charming and essentially a good person. “He looked after me on many occasions,” the person said. But, beneath the surface, he also had a temper and could be volatile and obsessive. Ayahuasca changed him, the person seemed sure. He started dieting constantly—not consuming salts or sugars—and lost a lot of weight. “I could see how he could get himself into a lot of trouble in Peru and not back down if he felt he was right,” the person added.

After Sebastian's father, Gary, advised his son to seek professional help, Sebastian was only more withdrawing.

What worried Woodroffe's family most was when they lost track of his whereabouts, only to learn that he was back in Peru.

On July 26, 2017, Woodroffe posted on Facebook: "Anyone like to see me. Feeling low. Reaching out." He appeared to be back in B.C.

But that summer, Woodroffe turned up in Pucallpa. A young American who would not give his real name but goes by Daniel Love recalled seeing Woodroffe walk into a café popular with expats.

Love, who was building his own jungle retreat in Peru at the time, said he saw Woodroffe have a strange conversation with one of his friends.

"As [Woodroffe] left, my friend came up to me and asked me, 'Do you know that guy?' And I said, 'Not really, I've just seen him today in the café,'" Love recalled.

To which Love's friend responded, "'Well, he just asked me for a gun.'"

According to the people knowing Sebastian, he would never kill someone, didn't want to own a gun or even wasn't interested in them. They didn't believe that he'd want to obtain one, and someone called it being '100% out of [his] character'. Well, a known pattern in some murder stories. 'A good lad, [always] telling his neighbours 'Good morning' on a staircase' as we'd say in Polish. Or dindunuffin, as you'd say on WPD.

Nelly Vázquez in the house where shaman Olivia Arévalo, her grandmother, had lived

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/17028700107287045.webp

In December 2017, two weeks before Christmas, Sebastian was heading back to Peru.

Woodroffe arrived in Lima on Dec. 15 and almost immediately ran into difficulty. He reported that his passport was stolen. Then he was involved in a collision in Lima while driving a rental car. While they waited for the police to arrive, Woodroffe and the driver of the other vehicle used their phones to communicate using an online translator.

The man thought Woodroffe had asked him if he knew where he could get a gun. The man thought the translator had interpreted incorrectly, or that he'd misunderstood. He responded by saying, "I don't know," and Woodroffe told him not to worry about it.

When he finally arrived in Pucallpa, Woodroffe sought out a taxi driver to act as a translator and help him locate the famous shaman Olivia Arevalo. He eventually found Herbert Ravelio, who drove him around town until someone was able to tell them where precisely Arevalo lived.

⠀AND JUST HERE STARTS THE PART INVOLVING AREVALO :marseyitsover:

Through a translator, Sebastian asked Arevalo if she can help him and his family. She replied that she can, if he has faith. He claimed that he needs to contact his family. Since Sebastian returned to Victoria Gracia, things started to become tense. He insisted on Arevalo taking ayahuasca with him. However, she refused, and the village's mayor claimed that she hadn't taken ayahuasca in years. He appeared to be obsessed with Arevalo family, and started to behave aggressively and suspiciously.

"He wasn't a normal person," said Linares [the mayor]. "Some neighbours found him prowling around there in the darkness. What was he trying to do?"

According to multiple accounts, Woodroffe turned up in the hamlet one night during a healing ceremony wanting to speak to Arevalo's son Julian. Woodroffe was reportedly carrying a long club, and was initially turned away from the lodge. He tried to sneak back, and apparently struck the man guarding the ceremony. Some villagers pursued Woodroffe, but other locals intervened to stop him from being seriously hurt, and ended up taking him to the police.

Linares said community members took Woodroffe to the police on three separate occasions. But local police have no record of this.

His family was worried when Sebastian failed to check in over Christmas and New Year's Eve. Two days later, on 5th of January 2018, he confirmed on Facebook that he's alive. Sebastian left Peru on 12th of January. Instead of a family home, he lived in his RV (recreational vehicle). His posts on Facebook shown that he feels alone and lost about what to do next.

Gary Woodroffe said that each trip to Peru "seemed to close him off to us."

"He wouldn't talk about what he did on the trips, and he wouldn't talk about a lot of things that went on ... I implored him, I asked him many times ... 'Hey, let's sit down, talk about this, see where you're going, see what you want to do.' And he would put it off."

Woodroffe seemed consumed by internal conflict. "Whose [sic] going to Peru. I have lots of peruvian money to sell," he posted on Facebook at the beginning of March, suggesting he might be done with the place.

On 11th of March, he wrote an incoherent FB post: 'i am.off to jungle.to.do some.sould searchin and fix the mind. see you whence.i am healed fml. part 4.'. Family tried to ask him whether he's sure that the jungle trips are helping him. Olivia Arevalo's cousin Guillermo Arevalo claimed that Woodroffe told him that he's bipolar and needs help.

On 14th of March, Woodroffe was back in Pucallpa, but this time he was living in a succession of low-rent rooms in the hamlets around the city. It's not known if he was seeking mental help. 13 days after the arrival, he wrote on FB: 'i am feeling better day by day in peru. so thankful to be sitting with good peeps', and in a reply: 'I am leaving the place I am at due to a tribal disagreement.'.

Looking back now, the final weeks of Woodroffe's life seem dramatic and frantic. He was paranoid, and a darkness seemed to be blocking out his healing spirit.

In the morning of 30th of March, Woodroffe entered a police station in Pucallpa, declaring that he wants to buy a gun. He eventually contacted with Glauco Utia, a 25 yo police officer on duty that day. Using Google Translate, they communicated, and according to Utia's statement, Sebastian wanted to buy a gun 'because he was going into the jungle and wanted protection from animals'. He had 5,000 soles (about $2,000 Cdn) to spend, and Utia agreed to sell him a 9mm Taurus pistol. Nobody else but Utia claimed that he needed a gun for a jungle trip - but if not for that use, why would Woodroffe need a gun for protection?

He claimed on FB that he wouldn't take ayahuasca this time, but it was unknown whether he was sticking to his diet. It is a part of a local spiritual cleansing rituals, but if done outside a supervision of a shaman, it can lead to malnutrition and some mental disturbances. On 1st of April, Sebastian wrote on FB: 'eating street meet [sic] in peru up till this point has been no problem…….until now. shitting in jungle day 3.'.

Over the next few days, he managed to obtain the gun, even though he had no license. On 5th of April, Sebastian wrote on FB: 'Not enjoying life right. Having a rough go. please send me prayers...'. On 10th of April, Sebastian arrived at the airport in Pucallpa, claiming that he wants to contact Arevalo later that day and needs a taxi driver who speaks English. He changed these plans, though, as he found another shaman who was speaking English.

His posts on FB back then were rather positive, suggesting that he's looking forward to the future. Things changed quickly. On 14th of April, at night, Sebastian showed up at the police station in Yarinacocha (outskirts of Pucallpa) with Herbert Ravelio, the mentioned taxi driver. He claimed that he was robbed - not a first time in Peru when Sebastian claimed he lost his passport and mobile phone. If he was carrying his 9mm Taurus that day, he must have it concealed.

Woodroffe was up early on the morning of April 19. One of his housemates said he saw him leave on the motorcycle at 7 a.m. Another saw him leave again at 10:30 a.m. Woodroffe was carrying his backpack and allegedly told the landlord's son that he was going to take ayahuasca.

He arrived in Victoria Gracia just before midday, and stopped outside of Olivia Arevalo's house. Witnesses say Woodroffe called out for Julian Arevalo through the windows. Woodroffe shot the gun into the air. Julian Arevalo allegedly ran out the back of the house. Around the same time, Olivia came out to speak to Woodroffe.

And what happened next, you've seen in the beginning of this post. Why exactly he wanted to speak with Olivia that day is still unknown.

Thumbnail is an image based on Ray's trailer x-ray. I've tried to do this post in a bit different way than usually either podcasts or longer articles are made.

TL;DR (sorry, I couldn't make it really short!): David Parker Ray (1939-2002) was an American kidnapper and serial rapist, also a suspected serial killer. The overall timespan of his crimes in Arizona and New Mexico is unknown, the first official report comes from mid-1986, when his daughter swore a complaint against him to the New Mexico branch office of the FBI. Ray was visiting Elephant Butte (NM) since 1984 and permanently settled there in the early 1991. It allowed him to intensify work on a semi-trailer, which he called his 'Toy Box'. It was a torture chamber, really well-equipped - including medical instruments and his DIY devices (Ray was a mechanic, known for his technical skills). Its focal point was a DIY gynecology chair. The victims could also be kept in his house. Ray's accomplices were his girlfriend - Cynthia ('Cindy') Hendy, and daughter - Glenda Jean ('Jesse') Ray. Only Cindy actively participated in torture. Future captives were usually either hookers or women met in bars. Ray was a sexual sadist, with precized interest since his teenage years, also showing psychopathic traits. He was fantasizing about murders at some point, told at least one victim he killed others, his accomplice claimed he was a killer, he exhibited many hallmarks of a serial killer (according to the FBI profilers) - but no direct evidence, including bodies, was found. How many women were kidnapped, tortured and released (possibly with drug-induced amnesia) is unknown. Most of the victims stay unidentified.

Sections go as follows:

  1. The property and trailer. Includes map and few photos, as well as the basic info about the perpetrators. There's timeline, too.

  2. One man's dream is another one's nightmare. Includes some of Ray's drawings and small dolls, a video showing 'Toy Box' inside, tapes transcripts tl;dr (full are in the comments). I din't include detailed torture descriptions from the victims' testimonies, as this post already hits 80% of the character limit. Feel free to ask in the comments about any detailed descriptions, though!

  3. Investigation starts. How the case surfaced, how the searches went, and so on.

  4. Trials, sentences and unanswered question. Also these about the murders. Ray died of heart attack 8 months after he was sentenced for 224 years. Thanks to a plea deal, his daughter just served two and a half years. Hendy was released from prison in 2019.

  5. Sources and some links, e.g. to the FBI website with the photos of the jewelry found in Ray's house (possibly of deceased or missing women).

I didn't put CW as there's no content directly showing minors. Keep in mind that Ray claimed that some victims were teenagers, though. Drawings he made are nearly porn. Personally, I'd far more like gore, but it's an evidence and it's matching what Ray did to the victims. That's enough of the warnings.

⠀THE PROPERTY AND TRAILER (and their owner) :marseynotesglow:

Let's start from David Parker Ray himself. He was born on 6th of November 1939. A year earlier, Alden (15 yo) and David (13 yo) - two youngest sons of Ray's grandmother Dolly Parker - were playing cowboys and Indians on a ranch. As grandfather left to the city to buy food, they were unsupervised. Alden accidentally shot his brother in a heart (or chest) with old Winchester, not knowing that there was one bullet left inside. Year later, David Ray was born, and his grandmother - who, quoting, 'flipped out' after grandson's death - thought that the newborn boy is a reincarnation of David, hence the name.

Ray recalled his family home as cold. He didn't receive much affection, and felt like he was present there only physically. His father was an alcoholic, heavily beating him on regular. Ray's sexual interests started early, and 'it was his private hell for 40 years', 'tearing him apart'. When he was a little kid, Cecil ans Nettie Ray, 'pawned him off' on a farm near Mountainair (New Mexico), together with his sister Peggy. There was not much to do there, and they often spent time together. In school, David was quiet and shy, especially around girls.

Mountainair High School picture, 1955.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/80dvs9ym.png

Once per roughly 6 months, Ray's father was visiting him and leaving a pile of True Detective magazine issues. Strategically posed damsels in distress on the cover and crime stories inside sparked an interest in the boy, who - around the age of 10 - started fantasizing about raping and killing young girls, preferably using a broken beer bottle. He stated during questioning by the FBI that he was interested in bondage since 13 yo, and 'active and extremely interested' since 28 yo. As a teenager, David had a collection of photos and drawings, a few times found accidentally by Peggy. She later claimed that she was aware of brother's interests, but didn't consider them problematic or dangerous. According to her, David was kind to animals as kid or teenager - as siblings were separated in 1957 (so when Ray was 18 yo). Apparently, the opinion about him didn't change:

Ironically, David Parker Ray and his daughter Jesse were both passionate animal lovers. Ten years earlier the elder Ray had told the FBI that he was at a loss to understand how he “can't kill a litter of puppies,” but fantasized about killing women.

Peggy said she never heard from David, and found out what was going on in the meanwhile around 40 years later, reading the newspapers.

⠀ACCOMPLICES AND TIMELINE :marseywait:

Known accomplices:

  1. Cynthia ('Cindy') Hendy, born on 6th of February 1960. At the time of the arrest, she had three children (son and two daughters). From aside, her family reportedly looked well, in court she stated she was a victim of physical, mental and sexual abuse. Her father was serving in the Navy and was often away from home. Mother was 'an aspiring model and local Seattle beauty queen'. Cindy dropped out of school in 8th grade, and became pregnant when 16 yo. She was already drinking and doing drugs as a teenager, often disappearing for days and partying in various places in Seattle with friends. It later turned into a normal method of escaping from reality. Cindy often ended up in abusive relationships. One of her ex-partners in 1992 was sentenced to more than 2 years for choking and threatening to kill her. Friends described her as a Jekyll and Hyde type of person.

  2. Glenda Jean Ray, known as 'Jesse', born on 2nd of May 1967. Daughter of David Ray. She was openly gay and accepted among her friends. How she was viewed, depends on place. In a big city (Albuquerque), she didn't stand out in the crowd. In a smaller town, like T or C which she nickname 'Shithole, USA', she was seen as an extrovert who was flaunting her unconventional lifestyle. Jesse visited bars quite often, and became known as an excellent pool player, beating most men. Visiting bars is connected to her being Ray's accomplice - she was good at finding out which girl may be a good victim. Usually, women feel safer around a couple, not just one man. Jesse reported Ray to the FBI in 1986, but they closed the investigation due to allegations being non-specific (classic 'we did all we do could back then'). She was also a cameraman, how often - wasn't mentioned.

  3. (Dennis) Roy Yancy, born on 4th of June 1971. He came from an exceptionally good family as for T or C standards. The parents divorced when Roy was a child, and he left in T or C with mother and two adopted siblings: Joshua and Heather. He was remembered as a hyperactive child, always craving attention. By the age of 16, he started drinking and experimenting with drugs, also joining a gang and taking interest in Satanism and black magic. He spent 4 years in the Navy as an electrician, and in 1995 returned to T or C. Even though it looked like the military service changed him, within a few months he went back to old habits and doing more drugs (this time LSD, mushrooms and heroin). He is mostly connected with Ray as his and Jesse's friend, Marie Parker's murder, also as an enthusiast of black magic and non-consensual activities. There's one more possible murder victim from T or C, Kenneth Lee Lane, but I'll write more on him in the last section.

I couldn't find good Jesse's photos, this is from a video taken during her arrest:

Timeline of what and when David Ray did is sketchy. Have a basic one, focused on his activity in Elephant Butte area until the arrest.

1967 - Ray's daughter is born. This year, as he later told FBI, he also started to be active on a bondage scene. Where - it's not clear, as few months after his daughter was born (so late 1967), Ray went into his hippie phase, and started to travel around Arizona and New Mexico, making his living with odd jobs and repairs.

1984, early - Ray first arrives to Elephant Butte. He was avid fisherman, and very interested in knowing better both the lake and the surrounding state park.

1986, June - Jesse came to the New Mexico branch office of the FBI to swear out a complaint against her father. She claimed that David was kidnapping women and torturing them, then transported across the Mexican border and sell as a sex slaves. One agent claimed that 'she did it out of spite', but it agreed with a lot of future findings in Ray's home.

Over the next year the FBI investigated David Parker Ray's activities in New Mexico and Arizona, bringing him in for questioning on several occasions. At each interview he was unusually cooperative, apparently delighting in discussing his deviant lifestyle as he tried to rationalize it. On one occasion he even told agents that he considered himself to be “potentially dangerous.”

The allegations were non-specific,” FBI Agent Doug Beldon would later explain in May 1999. “A thorough investigation was accomplished based upon information known at that time. When the logical investigation was completed and leads were covered, the case was closed.”

:marseybrainletclapping: now back to the timeline.

1988, on 22nd of September - Ray's boss ar Canal Motors, Billy Ray Bowers disappears. A week earlier, he started to carry a gun, clearly afraid for his safety. Year later, a body was spotted floating in Elephant Butte lake. The man was shot in back of the head execution-style, wrapped in a blue tarpaulin, with body weighed - preventing floating to the surface too quickly. Initially buried as John Doe, he was identified as Ray's boss 10 years later, and Ray was a prime suspec when the investigation reactivated.

1990, late - Jesse's daughter is born, named Kaela Alys. Jesse was openly gay, and rumors start spreading that David is a father of Jesse's daughter. She was aware of this, though, and the real father was her friend Wayne. Jesse back then lived with Teri Hafenbrack, considering her to be the 'other parent' of Kaela.

1991, January - Ray quits his job at Canal Motors and moves from Phoenix to Elephant Butte permanently. Now he can spend more time on improving 'Toy Box'.

1993, on 23rd of July - Ray's introductory tape for a future captives is recorded.

1996, early - Jesse Ray introduces Yancy to David, and they free become friends. Soon, Roy was introduced to a local BDSM scene.

1997, summer - Cindy Hendy arrives to Truth or Consequences. She refuse to undergo a court-ordered drug counseling course, then went on the run to avoid jail time.

1997, July - kidnapping and murder of Marie Parker.

1998, summer - Roy Yancy and Jesse Ray go back from Galveston to Truth or Consequences, as search for Marie Parker was over.

1999 - Ray is arrested (22nd of March), his trailer taken away to the crime lab (April).

⠀PROPERTY AND TRAILER (maps) :marseypin2:

Elephant Butte is a small town in SW New Mexico:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/apmcqf6s.png

And Ray's property was one 513 Bass Rd. It's not entirely remote, but away from the main part of the town:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/fbq6bjg.png

Trailer was taken away from the property to crime lab in April 1999. Google Street View from May 2008:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/vvrl85k.png

Here it's a minute-long fragment of documentary on Ray. I've cut out crime scene videos, showing the property and his home. Video showing 'Toy Box' is in the next section. Sound left as it was.

⠀ONE MAN'S DREAM IS ANOTHER MAN'S NIGHTMARE :marseytroublemaker:

The 'Toy Box' on the outside measured 15 x 25 ft (around 4,5 x 7,5 m). Neighbours thought that it's Ray's workshop. Later, it was estimated that he could have spent around $100,000 on it. Below, you have around 8 mins long video from the crime scene, showing the inside of the trailer and more. There's a policeman watching one of the tapes, which is reportedly the actual footage showing Ray's captive. You can see some parts of the screen only, and the quality isn't great. I really hope there will be more released in the future, as these fragments already are promising! :marseyexcited:

Timestamps for some noticeable parts:

At first, there's just view from the outside.

1;25 onwards - inside of the trailer is first shown.

2;30 - more recent video showing trailer inside (it's still kept by FBI), then some equipment from the 'Toy Box' is shown separately.

5;48 - part about the cameras and recordings.

6;18 - video showing Ray testing equipment inside the trailer. On 6;42, it's no longer shown in full, and reportedly that's video showing his victim.

One photo you will see in this section is actually a stillframe from the video. It seems to be another person. Cynthia Vigil is blonde, and you can see the victim's hair in the video (later in the documentry, in another part of that footage, though). Woman in the picture has more dark than blond hair. But scenery is for sure the same:

His dolls:

Time for another set of photos, matching testimony of Cindy Jones.

Jones reported that she was taken to the middle bedroom and laid flat on what Ray called the “coffin box” to have her nipples stretched. She stated that he placed large clamps on her nipples, which were attached to ropes that were run up the ceiling through pulleys and then across the ceiling to another set of pulleys and then to large lead weights. Ray then shocked Jones in her upper torso making her arch up and then fall back down stretching out her breasts. He also had placed tape over her tattoos to avoid identification.

He did this so when he photographed her, she would not be identified. Police located a Polaroid™ of Jones, which had been taken by Ray during their crime scene search.

⠀THE TAPES :marseyearrape:

The best known tape is the introductory one. I will put the transcripts in the comments, here are just the summaries. There were 6 audiotapes mentioned in detail (as found in a 'Toy Box' by the FBI). Not all transcripts are available. Reportedly, all but one were beginning with: 'This tape was designed [and created] to be used for entertainment purposes'. Even for the best known introductory tape, I've added tl;dr for these users who have no idea WTF is this about.

  1. One tape, created on 6th of Julty 1993, begins in a way suggesting it's another warm welcoming to the new captive. Instead of training for Ray's 'private use', it's about how he is a dungeon master in a local chapter of the Church of Satan, and how the given captive woman will be used during the rituals here. The group was about 20 people, both male and female. Some parts of this tape are similar to the introductory tape, e.g. mentioned 'disposal' of the captive after brainwashing with drugs instead of killing. Here, Ray also states that during the group meetings or 'rituals' few women died because of vaginal rupture and bleeding out. He claimes it was 'fellows' causing it. Another difference is a mention of locking jaws to prevent biting during oral sex - this wasn't a scenario in the introductory tape. Its overal style of narration isn't much different, though.

  2. Another tape with transcript available is about porn movies and the captive's role in them. Here, there's some commotion in the background, as if someone was being tortured right now. Ray sometimes interrupts the recording and shouts to these people to stfu because he is recording a tape. I assume that if this tape was played to the captives, then including this background commotion was partially another form of 'entertainment'. He could have simply paused the recording - and did once, followed by 'Well, I'm back [laughing]'.

  3. The best known tape is the introductory one. Here, Ray claims it was recorded on 23rd of July 1993, after years of experience with 'several' (number not precized) years of experience with captives, and even longer experience with sexual abuse in general (quoting, 'since he could jerk off'). He mentions in detail what's the procedure of making a new female captive into a sex slave, what will she be forced to do, how should she communicate with Ray and his accomplice, and some detailed torture descriptions. The captive was no more privileged than an animal in the barn, and was right away informed that she would be kept with a bare minimum of needs satisfied. Fed, hydrated, relatively clean, just to keep her fuckable and don't get more trouble. It also covers the punishments for specific 'misdeeds' (talking back, biting, escape attempt etc.) and the 'disposal' of the captive. The preferred way was not murder, but cleaning a naked woman well (including vaginal and anal cavity), brainwashing her with proper medication and releasing with retrograde amnesia.

  4. One relatively short recording is about a hooker from Phoenix called Nikki. Here, Ray tolds how he knew her for two or three years, and caught a clap (gonorrhea). He didn't realize it's possible to get it from a blowjob. Half a year later, he came back, hoping to find Nikki but not her boyfriend aroun. It took two days, and Ray took her to his trailer. She didn't know at first it's not a casual encounter. Nikki ended up tied, gagged and ductaped (so she could even try to open her jaws), while Ray took a seat and started to tell her how bad whore she is and what trouble with the medical bills, treatment and so on she caused him with the STD. Ray wanted a revenge, which meant beating, anal rape and taking away her $100 she wanted to spend on drugs (according to him). Tape ends without letting the reader know how this fascinating story ends :marseylaugh:

When it comes to language, both the vocabulary choice and structure of the scripts for the recordings were a party to the torture. At the moment the tape was playing, Ray and the victim haven't even talked to each other yet. The victim was already aware of his great understanding of her emotional state and all the possibilities of 'how to make it worse'. Even though there were a shitload of details, there was a lot of left to the imagination, too. It can be made worse by creating the dissonance - like adding 'Have a nice day' in the end of the introductory tape. I guess that explaining the motivations and reasoning behind these crimes just made the audio tapes more brainfucking.

The content of the other two recordings wasn't specifically mentioned (or I haven't yet found it), just as the reasons behind it. It was only generally stated that the FBI found a six 'horrifying' audiotapes inside the 'Toy Box'. However, this seems to not match the transcripts from any of the four tapes mentioned:

[...] Ray tells his victims how he had already kidnapped thirty-seven girls and these “wild urges” had led some psychiatrists to classify him as some sort of “sexual psychopath.”

⠀INVESTIGATION STARTS :marseyfedscared:

Among the few known victims who later told about the experience, the last one was Cynthia Vigil-Jaramillo. She was captured on 19th of March 1999 and brought to Ray's home. Cynthia was kept chained to bed, instead of the 'Toy Box' - you've seen this bed in the beginning of this post in a short video. Her successful escape from Ray's home (after a fight or struggle with Cindy) led to Ray's arrest - that's very tl;dr. Her photo from 2011:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/mw5382ef.png

Cynthia Vigil comes from Albuquerque. Before she turned 11, she was sexually abused by a family member. The girl ran away to live with her mother, as the report of the abuse was dismissed. Her mother was murdered when Cynthia was 15 yo, but initially it was assumed to be 'just' OD - just a type of person that authorities didn't care enough. A reoccurring pattern in Ray's victims stories. One of Cynthia's partners assaulted her (during not precized teen years) physically, causing permanent skull bone structure injury. The same man later killed another girlfriend. In 1998, the best friend of Cynthia was murdered by her boyfriend. He was already known to them both as a troublesome guy. She spent a good part of her life staying in motels, also doing drugs and sex-working.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/vciyc6n2.jpg

In an interview, Cynthia described how she was terrified until the 2nd day, when she suddenly felt very motivated and feeling like she will get out of this alive. The perpetrators' attitude surprised her, as they behaved normally in-between the torture sessions. Once Cindy even started to talk to her about plans to sell the trailer - another, not the 'Toy Box' - the way she'd rather talk to a friend, not a sex slave. When Cynthia escaped, Ray wasn't home. Cynthia was kept chained to a metal pole. Cindy didn't stick to the set of rules which Ray provided, which made the captive woman able to reach the keys to the lock for the chain and the telephone. She dialed 911, but Cindy walked into the room and interrupted her. Cynthia got knocked down with a lamp, but fought back, and in the middle of the struggle found the key. After unlocking the chain from the metal post, she found an icepick - it was previously used for torture. She fought off Cindy and run outside, only 'wearing' a dog collar with the chain still attached to it, naked and covered in blood.

Cynthia run down the road and tried to flag a car, but nobody stopped. Later, two witnesses were found, who saw a naked woman while driving, but 'she looked wild' and they were afraid to stop. Cynthia saw a house on Hot Springs Landing Rd which had the front door open, so she ran inside and locked the door behind her. She first saw a 60 yo woman, then her husband, and screamed'Please help me! Don't let them get me!'. Cynthia was acting hysterically and started sobbing. The 60 yo woman walked her from the living room to the bedroom, her husband brought his wife's pink robe for Cynthia. She was afraid of Ray and Cindy going after her. The man reassured her that he has a shotgun, so she is safe from any intruders, and his wife dialed 911. When the police arrived, Cynthia didn't want to get inside the car, glad that she is alive and broke free, but still afraid of going into apparently-police cars. Cops were told that she was kidnapped by a man and woman in Albuquerque the previous Saturday, and how she was kept as a sex slave.

If you want more on topic, here's a 35 mins long interview with her.

Cynthia Vigil was taken to the hospital, and her statements were enough to find and arrest both David Ray and Cindy Hendy the same day, on 22nd of March, Monday.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/f4gepb9r.png

Initially, Ray and Hendy were taken to the Sierra County Detention Center (in T or C) and booked on charges of kidnapping, assault, conspiracy and criminal sexual penetration (so: rape). It was on Tuesday morning. The crime scene was set up the same day. The investigators were told to pay a special attention to the 'Toy Box'. Later, Patricia Rust was the FBI agent delegated to describe it in detail. Context: before the following quote, there was a description of a video apparently showing a woman tortured to death.

The FBI agents turned off the videotape recorder and walked out of the torture chamber, one by one. Several agents threw up in the hot desert sand. Others sat on the steps of David Ray's white cargo trailer and talked among themselves.

For the next four days, Rust went back in the place David called his “toy box” and did her job, making a series of highly detailed black-and-white drawings [...] On Friday morning, April 2, 1999, she met with her boss to discuss the drawings. He told her she'd done a “fantastic job.” Then he told her to go home and relax and try not to think anymore about what she'd seen in the trailer.

Later that night, Patricia E. Rust, thirty-six, drove home to her family in El Paso, Texas. Just before midnight, she got out of bed and went downstairs to get her personal handgun.

She put the barrel of the gun to her head and pulled the trigger.

She didn't leave any message behind specifically saying that her job in the 'Toy Box' was a reason. It's surely right after the job was done.

Quote from the search warrant issued on 26th of March (Friday):

Hendy has related to officers involved in this investigation that the defendant Ray has been responsible for fourteen homicides.

According to her, Ray would 'bury or dump' the bodies all over south-western part of the US.

Apart from videotapes and photographs, there were multiple items found on his property. Link to the FBI website is at the end of this post. More than a half of the 400 photos on this website shows pieces of jewelry. The rest is mostly clothing (in good part - underwear) and personal belongings. There's a chance that they're mementos kept after victims.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/o6pcu725.png

Search warrants were very precized. Part of this was related to Ray's sexual preferences and activities - any equipment, surgical or other instruments, drawings, photos, models, commercial litierature. It also included medications, syringes, medical textbooks, manuals, also relating to the first aid. Some elements are (I assume) obvious - all electronic devices, recordings, tapes, processed and unprocessed film, hard drives etc., trace evidence, bank records, documents, handwriting samples,... Authors added that:

The author highly recommends that the reader take note of the materials that were listed in the warrant applications because these items have great evidential value in understanding and presenting the behaviors and motives of these types of suspects.

I will also recommend you to take note specifically of the 'digging devices', soil samples and soil structure examination results.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/ckdeaiie.png

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/0x5mdwmv.png

The FBI's National Center for Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC) took Hendy's testimony very seriously. There was a possibility of dealing with a serial killer. The criminal profile was prepared within 24 hours, and it was assumed that Ray is both a serial offender and sexual sadist. I was wondering whether Ray had any other diagnoses, specifically personality disorders. One article mentioned anti-social PD, but it referenced a book in which I can't find this info. Another book mentions what I assume to be connected:

In one of these tapes, Ray tells his victims how he had already kidnapped thirty-seven girls and these “wild urges” had led some psychiatrists to classify him as some sort of “sexual psychopath.”

If this is true, he'd have to describe it to the psychiatrists as just fantasy - not actually admitting to crimes.

As my experiences with the WPD userbase over the last year did show, many users have problem with certain terms. Specifically, sadist / sociopath / psychopath / any formal diagnoses. So let's clarify it - for the US standards, where the DSM classification is used. DSM-V defines only sexual sadism and criteria for its diagnosis. There is no unit for the non-sexual 'version' (sadistic PD proposed in DSM-III-TR didn't make it into DSM-IV and V). Psychopathy is a set of personality traits with varying degrees. It's not a diagnosis, but it's a clinical term. 'Sociopath' is an informal term, usually associated with ASPD, which is neither a diagnosis nor clinical term. Certain people who can be diagnosed with ASPD display psychopathic traits. And a certain group of them are also sexual sadists. Shortly saying: someone like David Ray - living in a place perfect to be a serial killer, especially with a girlfriend and daughter wishing to help - is just a very rare but unfortunate possibility.

⠀TRIALS, SENTENCES AND UNANSWERED QUESTIONS :marseyunamused:

First unanswered question is:

It is impossible to know exactly how many unfortunate women were viciously tortured or worse in his Toy Box. Almost twenty years later the FBI would find hundreds of videotapes and photographs of scores of victims. Nearly all would be unidentifiable.

There were three separate trials planned, for crimes against Cynthia Vigil, Angelica Montano and Kelli Garrett (also mentioned as Kelli Van Cleave). The first one was planned for 28th of March 2000. However, due to the problems with including certain evidence and expert witnesses, it was delayed. To not waste time, Judge Mertz decided to move ahead with Ray's second trial, involving the 1996 kidnapping and torture of Kelli Garrett. Jury selection for that trials would begin on 23rd of May 2000 in Tierra Amarilla (northern New Mexico). In the meanwhile, on 7th of May 2000, Angelica Montano died of pneumonia. The first trial ended up in a mistrial, as two jurors didn't believe Kelli Garrett. Here, Ray's line of defence was that it's about niche sexual practices, but everything was consensual. After a retrial, Ray was convicted on all 12 counts. A week after the trial for the crimes against Cythia Vigil started, Ray agreed to a plea bargain to receive leniency for his daughter. On 20th of October 2001, he was sentenced to 224 years in prison for numerous offenses in the abduction and sexual torture of three women at his home.

Ray had pleaded guilty to the charges brought by Jim Yontz in the cases of Cynthia Vigil, Angelique Montano and Kelli Garrett. Yontz had contacted the two living victims and the mother of Angie Montano and everyone agreed to the plea deal fashioned by Yontz and McMillian.

Later that day, Yontz called down to Socorro to report the good news. The secretary on the phone informed him that just before noon they had experienced tremors and a small earthquake. Jim Yontz laughed and said: “That's Judge Mertz rolling over in his grave.”

On Thursday, September 20, 2001, Judge Sweazea gave David Parker Ray the maximum sentence—224 years in prison. As part of the deal engineered by the prosecutor and the defense attorney, Sweazea gave Jesse Ray 9 years and suspended 6½—setting her free after serving 2½ years.

Cindy Hendy was sentenced to 36 years on 11th of May 2000. She would be eligible for parole after 17 or 18 years. News started spreading that her release was scheduled for 15th of July 2019. Instead of leaving on parole, she spent two years of her parole in prison. In 2019, she left as a free woman, not under State supervision. Three months after her plea deal came, a new law was introduced - violent criminals have now to serve at least 85% of their sentence.

David Ray died of a heart attack on 28th of May 2002 in Lea County Correctional Facility, a few hours after being transported there for further questioning.

⠀WHAT ABOUT THE MURDERS? :marseyquestion:

As for the alleged murders, the number of the victims is often given as up to 60. I don't know from where this number comes. The investigators aware that they may deal with a serial killer didn't precize the number at all. Hendy officially claimed - when she was questioned - that Ray told her he killed 14 women (not giving a time frame). Not so long before, on 13th of March 1999, she was drinking with John Branaugh in a lakefront home, where he lived with her wife Jean. She was worried if them two don't have an affair, as Cindy was often seen with John, partying together since a few months before. John was worried if Cindy was saying truth about her life with Ray an him being a serial killer.

As she swigged white wine straight from the bottle, she suddenly confided that Ray was actually a serial murderer, who had killed hundreds of women during his lengthy career.

“Cindy said she knew about six or seven [women] that were in the lake,” said Branaugh, who was horrified at the disclosure. “And this was only while they had been together. They say drink makes people talk. Well she was doing an awful lot of talking that night.” [...]

Hendy then explained in detail how Ray would slit up the bodies and fill the stomachs with stones, to ensure that they sunk to the bottom of the lake.

Hendy said she was looking forward to “suffocating” the next woman herself, as she wanted to experience the ultimate rush of murder.

In 1999, Dennis Roy Yancy pleaded guilty to the 1997 murder of 22 yo Marie Parker. He started dating her in summer 1996, and she was a mother of two girls, struggling with drugs and for some time working as a prostitute in Las Vegas and Albuquerque. Her family was dysfunctional (as it's stated in a source book, 'even for the T or C standards'), and she also wasn't taken as a credible by the authorities. According to Yancy (who kidnapped Marie together with Jesse), Ray didn't directly participate in this murder - just was keeping Marie captive and torturing her over previous 3 days, murder took place in his trailer, he witnessed it and helped with hiding the body. It was wrapped in a blanket and thrown into a ravine. Both the body and any direct evidence for the murder were never found. Marie Parker was reported missing two days after being seen last time, on 7th in July, in Elephant Butte.

Marie Parker and her kids:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/8bft0af8.png

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/nt8v0sqd.png

Then, while she was still bound to the cot, Yancy put the rope around her neck and began to choke her. Marie began to struggle, as she fought desperately for her life.

“She wasn't dying fast enough,” Yancy would later confess, saying that he placed his knee on Marie's chest for extra leverage, using all his strength to strangle her, until she went limp and turned blue.

It would later be alleged that Jesse Ray held a gun to Yancy's head while he strangled her, and that David Parker Ray videotaped the murder and sold it as a snuff movie.

What if they found any recording?

“I overheard the head FBI agent, Beldon, talking on the phone to his boss back in Washington, D.C. It was about one of the videos they found in the toy box and it was a real bad scene. Beldon said Ray and Hendy were using a cattle prod on a naked woman, all tied down. You could see smoke coming out of her vagina, Beldon said. She goes limp and then you see blood comin' out of her mouth—they have alligator clips attached to her nipples. She is screamin' and jerkin' around and there are burn marks on her thighs. Ray and Hendy are taking turns with this gal. At the end, she dies. The last thing I heard Beldon say to the other operative was something about the FBI agents on the scene.

“These guys all said you could see the girl die—it just blew their minds.”

Then, in the next breath, Dan Dickson offers up his explanation as to why the so-called “snuff” video may never see the light of day.

“They can't use it in court,” he points out, “because it might be a fake.”

In the same book, there was a more precized description earlier, also mentioning that the tape was watched by 'Patty Rust and her fellow FBI agents'.

I want to add something I've noticed, so keep in mind that's not anything 'official'. In the murder of his boss, where he was a prime suspect, it was done by shooting the guy in the back of the head. Quick death, without unnecessary mess. In the tape describing the 'rituals', Ray states that 'nobody likes watching a girl bleeding to death'. He was very careful with any physical evidence and bodily fluids. He had access to certain meds, and his daughter was a drug dealer. Plenty of way to kill someone, in general. But in the introductory tape he says:

I don't like killing girls, but occasionally bad things happen. [...]

I'm sure that you would prefer that in lieu of being strangled or having your throat cut.

That's in my opinion more meaningful than it seems (when put in wider context). If he just wanted to scare the shit out of them, there are far worse scenarios. Let's assume that the victim wouldn't lose consciousness too quickly. Both strangling and cutting throat guarantee some intimacy with the victim. No quick or rapid death, just gradually watching someone's life fading away. Or literally feeling it while someone is weakening. Even if he didn't want to kill a given woman at first (it wouldn't be a goal), then the method of choice would be possibly enjoyable.

I don't understand why someone would waste such an opportunity, too. And so does FBI:

For months at a time he could be perfectly normal, but then he would become obsessed with violent, deviant sex.

It was at this point that his sexual fantasies started to take over his life. He would tell an FBI agent how his masturbation fantasies now began to involve murder. It came to the point when he could only ejaculate if he imagined killing women.

To what extent he followed through on his fantasies remains a matter for conjecture. But years later FBI profilers would describe David Parker Ray as exhibiting many classic hallmarks of a serial killer.

“The murder, as a whole, is an integral part of the serial killer's sexual fantasy,” wrote Dr. Jeremy Anderson. “The serial killer's preoccupation with, and constant need for, thrills, is an integral part of the killer's fantasy life, and as such is a partial drive for murder.”

Jill Troia (22 yo back then, ethnicity: Korean) is a suspected victim of David Ray (check the missing person page). She was last seen with his daughter at night from 30th of September to 1st of October 1995, when the two women left a restaurant in Albuquerque.

This photo from a fake ID was found in Ray's possesion. Unidentified woman is suspected to be his another victim:

(Dead nude women warning) Women murdered by their intimate partners -WPD EXCLUSIVE - Crime scene and morgue photographs -

The information in the video and in the text below do not cover "honor killings" or "dowry deaths" those I might cover in a future post but did not want to put them under the same umbrella as what is covered here, because both honor killings and dowry deaths have the added elements of culture and religion to blame

Of the estimated 4,970 female victims of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter in 2021, data reported by law enforcement agencies indicate that 34% were killed by an intimate partner (figure 1). By comparison, about 6% of the 17,970 males murdered that year were victims of intimate partner homicide.

Overall, 76% of female murders and 56% of male murders were perpetrated by someone known to the victim. About 16% of female murder victims were killed by a nonintimate family member—parent, grandparent, sibling, in-law, and other family member—compared to 10% of male murder victims.

A larger percentage of males (21%) were murdered by a stranger than females (12%). For 1 out of every 3 male murder victims and 1 out of every 5 female murder victims, the relationship between the victim and the offender was unknown.

Mythology

The National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) is a data collection system designed and maintained by the FBI that compiles data on all crimes recorded by participating state and local law enforcement agencies. NIBRS captures extensive information on each incident known to law enforcement. The NIBRS database collects detailed information on 52 different offenses that can occur within a crime incident and collects arrest-only information for an additional 10 offenses.1 In 2021, national estimates of crime were based on data received from about 11,790 of the 18,800 law enforcement agencies in the United States, representing approximately 65% of the U.S. population. (See BJS's National Incident-Based Reporting System page and the FBI's Crime Data Explorer for more information.)

Definitions

Murder

Murder is composed of the two homicide categories: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter. The FBI defines murder and nonnegligent manslaughter as “The willful (nonnegligent) killing of one human being by another.”2 Attempted murders, accidental deaths, suicides, and traffic fatalities are not to be coded as murders in NIBRS. In addition, felony murder or situations where a victim dies of another cause (such as a heart attack) because of a crime being committed against them should not be classified as a murder.

Relationship of victim to alleged offender

The relationship of the victim to the alleged offender(s) is based on the NIBRS Relationship(s) of Victim to Offender(s) data element, which includes 27 distinct relationship types. For this analysis, the relationship types were aggregated into six categories, detailed below:

Intimate partner—includes Victim Was Boyfriend/Girlfriend, Victim Was Common-Law Spouse, Victim Was Spouse, Victim Was Ex-Relationship (Ex-Boyfriend/Girlfriend), and Victim Was Ex-Spouse

Nonintimate family—includes Victim Was Child, Victim Was Grandchild, Victim Was Grandparent, Victim Was In-law, Victim Was Other Family Member, Victim Was Parent, Victim Was Sibling, Victim Was Stepchild, Victim Was Stepparent, and Victim Was Stepsibling

Friend or other known person—includes Victim Was Acquaintance, Victim Was Babysitter, Victim Was Child of Boyfriend or Girlfriend, Victim Was Employee, Victim Was Employer, Victim Was Friend, Victim Was Neighbor, and Victim Was Otherwise Known

Stranger—includes Victim Was Stranger

Victim was offender—includes Victim Was Offender; this relationship type is used to denote when a participant in a crime incident was both a victim and an offender, such as domestic disputes or bar fights where two or more persons were identified as participating

Unknown relationship—includes Relationship Unknown

The relationship category Victim Was Offender is not included in this report. Less than 2% of murders and nonnegligent manslaughters in 2021 were estimated to include this type of relationship.

Despite making up only 15% of the female population, African American women and girls accounted for nearly 34.6% of missing women in 2021, according to the National Crime Information Center. By the year's close, 14,323 Black women and girls were still missing. And their cases drag on four times longer than average, according to the task force report

Globally

In 2022, around 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members (including fathers, mothers, uncles and brothers). This means that, on average, more than 133 women or girls are killed every day by someone in their own family. Current and former intimate partners are by far the most likely perpetrators of femicide, accounting for an average of 55 per cent of all intimate partner and family related killings.

This year recorded the highest number of total intentional female homicides, indicating that the world is failing to stop deaths that could be prevented through early intervention, gender-responsive policing and justice, and access to survivor-centred support and protection.

Like all forms of gender-based violence against women and girls, femicide is a problem that affects every country and territory across the globe. According to the new report, in 2022, Africa recorded the largest absolute number of female intimate partner and family related killings with an estimated 20,000 victims; followed by 18,400 in Asia; 7,900 in the Americas; 2,300 in Europe; and 200 in Oceania.

Adjusted for total population size, the available data shows that, in 2022, 2.8 women and girls per 100,000 were killed by an intimate partner or family member in Africa; compared with 1.5 in the Americas; 1.1 in Oceania; 0.8 in Asia; and 0.6 in Europe.

While the numbers presented in the report are alarmingly high, they are the tip of the iceberg. Too many victims of femicide still go uncounted: for roughly four in ten intentional murders of women and girls, there is not enough information to identify them as gender-related killings because of national variation in criminal justice recording and investigation practices.

In many cases, only gender related killings perpetrated by an intimate partner or family member are counted as femicides—yet we know that gender-related killings take place in many contexts beyond the private sphere. They can be related to rape or sexual violence by someone unknown to the victim; linked to harmful practices such as female genital mutilation or so-called honor killings; a result of hate crimes linked to sexual orientation or gender identity; or connected with armed conflict, gangs, human trafficking and other forms of organized crime.

Ensuring the availability of comprehensive disaggregated data is critical to strengthening femicide prevention, protection and response measures, as well as access to justice. To help move beyond the current limitations in data collection, UNODC and UN Women developed the statistical framework for measuring the gender-related killing of women and girls (“femicide/feminicide”), approved by the United Nation's Statistical Commission in March 2022.

There continue to be significant limitations in data and information on gender-related killings of certain groups of women and girls. Women in the public eye, including those in politics, women human rights defenders and journalists are often targets of intentional acts of violence, both online and offline, with some leading to fatal outcomes and intentional killings.

Despite data limitations, the available evidence from Canada and Australia suggest that indigenous women are disproportionately affected by gender related killings. At 4.3 per 100,000 women and girls, the rate of female homicide in Canada was five times higher among indigenous than among non-indigenous women and girls in 2021.

To prevent femicide, it is crucial that national authorities record comprehensive data on victims. By identifying women and girls at greater risk, countries can better inform prevention and protection mechanisms.

Gender-related killings and other forms of violence against women and girls are not inevitable. They can and must be prevented through primary prevention initiatives focused on transforming harmful social norms and engaging whole communities and societies to create zero tolerance for violence against women. Early intervention and risk assessment, access to survivor-centered support and protection as well as gender-responsive policing and justice services are key to ending gender-related killings of women and girls.

One innovative practice with the potential to enhance necessary reforms are in-depth multi-stakeholder reviews of gender-related killings of women and girls. These often involve families and social networks of victims, with the aim of improving institutional responses and preventing future killings.

In Aotearoa New Zealand, the Family Violence Death Review Committee conducted in-depth reviews of family violence-related killings to better understand the context, help-seeking behavior, and agency responses. The Committee recorded 320 family violence deaths between 2009 and 2020, of which 178 (56 percent) were women and girls. The Committee's findings showed that the most vulnerable—Māori, women, children and people with disabilities—are often unfairly assigned responsibility for their circumstances from the way they are portrayed in case records, their interactions with case workers, or the inadequate responsiveness of agencies. To address these issues, the committee recommended agencies should adjust their approach to draw from the methods used by Kaupapa Māori organizations. This more respectful approach focuses on well-being and involves training of service providers, shifting the focus to the entire family to break the silence of violence and shifting the status quo and norms of institutions so that initiatives are responsive to the needs of families.

More research is required to better understand what is driving increased femicide in certain contexts, and what factors have enabled decreases in others to better inform prevention strategies.

As expected for this topic, this is an exceptionally long post. While the lack of videos and photos is understandable, there aren't even so many torture descriptions or drawings that I'd find good enough. The same goes for the videos that could replace the walls of text.

Sections go as follows:

  1. Introduction. How this place looks and how it's organized.

  2. The beginnings of the controversy. Some more general info, and photos by Shane McCoy (11th of January 2002, the first detainees arriving).

  3. Enhanced Interrogation Techniques. There are two videos there (25 mins and 10 mins, timestamped) and a wall of text - both backstory and CIA personnel's initial observations. A few drawings by Zubaydah included, as well the other ones for comparision.

  4. Case of Abu Zubaydah. Includes a 23 mins long video from Democracy Now! (timestamped).

  5. Zubaydah's drawings. Matching other reports on torture, and the most detailed drawings we have for now. Also link to the report with all of them.

  6. Want more? Just links for those who would like more torture descriptions or depictions. Only these outstanding in various ways, so for certain users they may go beyond informative (peer-reviewed, literally :marseysurejan: ).

  7. The interrogation of Omar Khadr. The only video we have for now - it's a short part from the whole footage (recorded in 2003, released in 2008). Khadr was, at least in 2008, the only one in modern history to be tried for war crimes that he allegedly committed as a minor.

⠀INTRODUCTION :marseyquestion:

Events described later may be hard to imagine, so let's start from the basics. Even the basics are a fucking mess, though, when it comes to informing the public.

Map of the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base from gitmomemory.org (go there for interactive version). Red X means it's closed, orange X means it is or may be closed, and it's not related to the prison. Explanations about the detention camps is under the next picture.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/r2tjvdcx.png

Here, map of the camps from the BBC website:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/trwipckr.png

What the camps were or are for:

Camp X. 'Housing' detaines from January to April 2002, before pernament facilities were built. 'Housing' was in cages ('wire mesh units, with wood/metal covers and concrete floors'), lacking privacy, exposing the detainees to the weather conditions and scorpions. The iconic photos of Guantanamo Bay detention camp, and the one starting the media outrage, are from Camp X.

Camp Delta. Operating since April 2002. Various sources claim it was consiting of 3, 4 or 5 units, with their layout being unclear. Around 2005, they had a capacity of above 1000. According to the HRW website, the specific camps' use were as follows. Camp 1 - constructed in similar way to Camp 3, but the prisoners housed in adjacent cells and able to communicate with each other. Camp 3 - opened in 2002, temporarily closed in 2006, reportedly served as a punishment unit with single cells and no options for contact between the detainees. Camp 4 - opened in February 2003, 'to ease restrictions and allow detainees who don't pose disciplinary problems to congregate more freely'.

Camp Echo. Detainees deemed unsitable for communal living in Camp 4 were housed there in shed-like buildings. Previously, they were used as interrogation and isolation units.

Camp Iguana. Used for short, for only three detainees between 13 and 15 yo. Important for PR purposes. Detainees 16 yo and older were treated as adults, as Defense Department decided to set other standards than the international ones.

Camp Five. This is where the most of reported abuse took place. Opened in May 2004, reportedly designed in a way similar to maximum-security prison. It was meant to at max 100 detaines, 'deemed to be the highest threat to themselves, other detainees or guards'.

Camp 6. Completed in November 2006, intended for at last 160 detainees.

Camp 7. Two-story building, a maximum-security facility, built in 2004 and kept secret for the first 2 years. It was housing the most 'valuable' and 'dangerous' prisoners. Closed in April 2021, to cut costs.

The following quote is from the beginning of May 2023:

Since 2002, roughly 780 detainees have been held at the American military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Now, 30 remain. Of those, 11 have been charged with war crimes in the military commissions system — 10 are awaiting trial and one has been convicted.

In addition, three detainees are held in indefinite law-of-war detention and are neither facing tribunal charges nor being recommended for release. And 16 are held in law-of-war detention but have been recommended for transfer with security arrangements to another country.

For the comparision, stats from November 2010 (when 174 detainees were remaining, 6 confirmed to die in custody). Last new detainee arrived in 2008.

⠀THE BEGINNING OF THE CONTROVERSY :marseysmirk:

I haven't seen any well-done timeline to put you here, that'd explain the parallel storylines - both of certain topics and certain detainees. Here is the interactive timeline of the events relating to CIA's secret interrogation program (may no work on mobile version). That's the type of a situation about which everyone knows, but it's hard to tell when did specific controversy start or surfaced, or it doesn't even have a timeline.

Photos of the first 20 detainees, who arrived on 11th of Janury 2002, were taken by Navy Petty Officer Shane McCoy. He was there on duty, but his photos - now iconic - are sometimes incorrectly thought to be a leak. They had to be taken and are a public domain (as every US federal gov work). Not all photos showed the detainees, some were depicting the infrastructure. Below, a few of them of them with descriptions quoted.

U.S. Army Pfc. Jodi Smith watches from the outer perimeter as detainees in orange jumpsuits sit in a holding area in Camp X-Ray at Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during in-processing to the temporary detention facility on Jan. 14, 2002. The detainees will be given a basic physical exam by a doctor, to include a chest x-ray and blood samples drawn to assess their health.

In 2011, WikiLeaks released classified pictures of a few prisoners from leaked intelligence dossiers. Portraits of some prisoners taken by the International Committee of the Red Cross were released by their lawyers. Another series was published in June 2022:

Using the Freedom of Information Act, The New York Times has obtained from the National Archives less antiseptic photographs of the first prisoners who were brought from Afghanistan to the wartime prison in Cuba.

Released this year, these pictures were taken by military photographers to show senior leaders, chief among them Donald H. Rumsfeld, then the defense secretary, an intimate view of the offshore detention and interrogation operation in its early stages.

In September 2006, President George W. Bush officially stated that the CIA's secret interrogation program exists. Reportedly, the use of EITs ended in November 2007. There were videotapes, recorded from March 2002 to the end of 2002, destroyed in November 2005. In March 2009, news started spreading about the court papers confirming what, when, and where was destroyed. Tape destruction went under investigation by the federal prosecutor.

The Red Cross warned about the 'deterioration in the psychological health of a large number of detainees' in October 2003.

I don't know if there is any specific reason why (not when) waterboarding became an 'iconic' human rights abuse in this case. But:

Waterboarding entered the american lexicon on May 13, 2004, amid the scandal of Abu Ghraib, when the New York Times described the practice—“a prisoner is strapped down, forcibly pushed under water and made to believe he might drown”—and its authorization by the Department of Justice.

The article mentioned is 'Harsh C.I.A. Methods Cited In Top Qaeda Interrogations'. It states:

In the case of Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, a high-level detainee who is believed to have helped plan the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, C.I.A. interrogators used graduated levels of force, including a technique known as ''water boarding,'' in which a prisoner is strapped down, forcibly pushed under water and made to believe he might drown.

Ironically, euphemisms used to describe torture were already a case for waterboarding itself: water torture, water cure and water treatment. 'Water board torture' was first used in 1976, and referred to what were US Navy trainees subjected to. Here is an article about the history of language used.

In May 2008, for the first time, a former detainee - Murat Kunraz - testified before the US Congress (via VC, as he was already released and living in Germany). In October 2021, for the first time the abuse was described publicly. Majid Khan detailed both the improper conditions and abuse during a sentencing hearing, delayed for nearly a decade.

Certain color drawings by Abu Zubaydah were already released in December 2019. The accompanying report, 'How America Tortures', contained around a dozen of pictures, some text, and redacted extracts from the documents. News about the full report, containing all of them, come from May 2023.

⠀ENHANCED INTERROGATION TECHNIQUES :marseynotesglow:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/lju88n3f.jpg

EITs were developed to 'overcome the resistance' of the high-value detainees. Abu Zubaydah was the first of them, captured in March 2002 (above: photo from right after capture), and initially questioned in a 'classic' (no torture) way. He was incorrectly assumed to be a high-ranking member of Al-Qaeda and to know more about possible threats to US national safety. CIA contacted one psychologist, formerly serving in the US Air Force, who together with another psychologist, became a CIA contractor, working on the EITs program. Its goal was to achieve learned helplessness (this is what made these techniques 'enhanced'), breaking the detainee mentally, so they would 'cooperate' with the interrogators. It was claimed to be scientifically justified. Leaving aside ethical problems - inducing learned helplessness has only been studied in animal models before. The program itself was made based on reverse engineering the SERE program. So: inspiration from studies done on dogs was combined with a program meant to teach soldiers how to resist interrogation and torture if captured. One of the points of this SERE program, though, was putting maximum effort to make sure that the trainees do not develop learned helplessness.

Using the name 'EITs' instead of torture is just one of the possibilities. Other examples: 'coercive interrogation', 'applying psychological pressure', 'harsh treatment', 'more aggressive techniques'. Not only the specific measures are described vaguely or euphemistically, but also the overall outcomes. The point of the EITs is to turn the detainee into an emotional clusterfuck. The more fancy description is quoted below the photo (left - James Mitchell, right - Bruce Jessen).

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/j5o800nq.jpg

In 2002, the two psychologists – given the pseudonyms “Grayson Swigert” (Mitchell) and “Hammond Dunbar” (Jessen) – designed a system of interrogation methods euphemistically named “enhanced interrogation techniques” (EITs). They did this by reverse engineering the SERE program, refining techniques intended to disrupt detainees’ resistance, produce compliance, and understand the threshold at which the techniques could achieve “learned helplessness” [...]

In essence, Mitchell and Jessen’s goal was to “break” detainees to such an extent that any resistance to intelligence collection would be impossible. Their intention was to deprive detainees of a sense of control over their own minds through the use of abusive confinement conditions and brutal “interrogation” techniques. This they believed would ensure each detainee regressed to a state of extreme psychological debilitation, suffering, and submission. Theoretically, the interrogator could then “establish absolute control,” “induce dependence to meet needs,” “elicit compliance,” and “shap[e] cooperation.”

Significantly, Mitchell and Jessen’s EITs were intentionally designed to maximize suffering while showing no long-term visually observable physical manifestations. [...] interrogations were deliberately designed to have the long-term effect of breaking down both the psyche and brain function through the use of physical and mental pain and suffering.

Prior to Mitchell and Jessen’s program, “debility, dependence, and dread”[...] had never been used for interrogation by U.S. forces, although it had been studied and had influenced the CIA’s historical counter-intelligence strategies. The phenomenon of learned helplessness, effectively a continuation of that theory, had also been studied in animal models, but it had never been used, let alone demonstrated as effective for producing cooperation, accurate intelligence, or meaningful confessions.

Quoted from this document. SERE - Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape.

The most intense period was August 2002, during the 'aggresive phase' of testing EITs. This is when Zubaydah was waterboarded. It's commonly stated it took place 83 times, which is incorrect. This was initially the number of individual pours or splashes of water.

According to [the 2004 CIA report], the interrogation team decided at the outset to videotape Abu Zubaydah’s sessions, primarily in order to document his medical condition. CIA OIG examined a total of 92 videotapes, twelve of which recorded the use of EITs. Those twelve tapes included a total of 83 waterboard applications, the majority of which lasted less than ten seconds.

And, in his own words:

[...] during each session, apart from one, the suffocation technique was applied once or twice; on one occasion it was applied three times

These 92 videotapes were destroyed. 90 were showing interrogations of Zubaydah, 2 - of Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri. The latter was also waterboarded. CIA officially confirmed waterboarding only of them two and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

Few remarks from more detailed descriptions of testing EITs on Zubaydah, from CIA personnel in Detention Site Green (Thailand):

  1. 5th of August. The medical officer was warned that almost for sure he hasn't yet been at this point in his medical career. He was warned about scenes he was about to witness being 'visually and psychologically very uncomfortable'.

  2. 8th of August. Staff members were at some point wondering on how long the sessions can be carried on. They've been already 'profoundly affected' by the torture witnessed. A note from the same day mentions a few of them choking up and brought to tears.

  3. 10th of August. Two or three staff members reported 'likely to elect transfer' away from the detention site, if the EITs would continue.

  4. 10th of August. The interrogation team stated it was 'highly unlikely' that Zubaydah has the information needed by CIA. However, the Headquarters disagreed. Personnel were also concerned about the techniques approaching the legal limit. The answer was to stop using such speculative language in written communication, as 'it's not helpful'.

  5. 11th of August. These viewing the torture tapes should prepare 'for something not seen previously'. Watching them caused 'strong feelings of futility (and legality) of escalating or even maintaining the pressure'.

  6. Over this whole period, 'at times'. Zubaydah was going 'hysterical' and distressed to the level of being unable to effectively communicate. He frequently 'begged, cried, pleaded and whimpered', but continued to deny he has any more information.

One of the goals was to make sure that the detainee actually doesn't know, and isn't lying. If the interrogators weren't sure, the detainee would either be tortured or would make up stories. I wanted to know how it was assessed, but Mitchell's explanation didn't help:

Oddly enough, if you spend years and years and years watching people try to lie and tell the truth under various circumstances where coercion exists, you get some sense of what people are like when they’re lying or telling the truth.

That's a good part of the post to start complaining about not enough decent torture depictions being available. Decent in the gore context, for which Abu Zubaydah's drawings would be the best example. Many depictions are either former detainees' sketches or simple illustrations from other sources, e.g.:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/82gcu4p.jpg

Zubaydah's drawings were released through his lawyer, as they were considered 'legal materials' instead of 'art'. The detainees' artwork can be released, but not if explicitly showing their daily life in detention, interrogations or torture / abuse. The artwork shouldn't contain secret messages, too. Apparently, conveying one's emotions into the abstract art may be improper. Look at this Khalid Qasim's painting:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/kdeqdogg.jpg

His paintings were showing both nautical scenes, landscapes or other nature-related sights and symbolic or abstract art. Qasim didn't intent to provide a proper interpretation, claiming that each piece carry several meanings, which the viewer should search for. He also corrected negative news, saying that his paintings 'are always powered by optimism rather than despair'. In 2022, prison authorities have stopped Qasim from sharing his artwork with the outside world; it's hardly possible for him to share the paintings with attorneys, too. (https://reprieve.org/uk/2022/01/08/art-from-guantanamo-khalid-qasim/)

'Vertigo at Guantanamo' by Pakistani detainee Ammar al-Baluchi, suffering from the brain damage after 'walling' (resulting e.g. in vertigo):

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/lmw0bm43.jpg

A few sketches by Mohamed Ahmed Ben Soud were published in 2012. I just put two here; rest was, also simple, drawings of e.g. confinement box or board he was strapped to and turned around.

Below, map of the black sites. Zubaydah was moved between a few black sites or other secret facilities - Thailand, Poland, secret prison in Guantanamo, Morocco (not controlled by the CIA), Lithuania, and unknown one, probably in Afghanistan. On 6th of September 2006, he was transported to Guantanamo - as a one among 14 high-value detainees - and remains there.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/mu8o93rh.png

In 2015, Mitchell and Jessen were sued by the ACLU on behalf of three torture victims - Suleiman Abdullah Salim, Mohamed Ahmed Ben Soud, and a family of Gul Rahman, who died in custody (November 2002 - hypothermia). The suit was settled out of court in 2017. Here's the video, nearly 10 minutes long, where both of these guys and the former detainees are interviewed.

Two men who proposed interrogation techniques widely viewed as torture are part of a lawsuit filed on behalf of former C.I.A. detainees. Deposition videos, obtained exclusively by The New York Times, reveal new insights into the enhanced interrogation program and the C.I.A. officials behind it.

They point out there Mitchell saying earlier that he's aware if someone was given a choice, they'd choose breaking legs over waterboarding as it's 'less distressing' for them. It's from the interview I will link next, after 18;00.

Here's the VICE interview with Mitchell, reportedly the first time he was interviewed on camera.

5;35 - main part of the interview starts.

10;30 onwards - there is a comment from the lawyer of Abu Zubydah, and some more loose talk with Mitchell.

13;30 - the interview continues, e.g. on 'Jihadi mindset'.

15;05 to 15;35 - short scene with volunteer waterboarded. Then the talk continues, with a few inserted scenes or photos.

21;40 - the final part of the interview, just in another place.

⠀CASE OF ABU ZUBAYDAH :marseyschizoshaking:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/f5isebxx.png

Actually Zayn al Abdeen Mohammed al Hussein, born in in Saudi Arabia on 12th of March 1971. His capture and abuse by the use of EITs was already described. In July 2008, he filled a petition challenging the legality of his detention (month after the right to do so was granted to the detainees). Federal courts declined to rule on it for years. European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that Poland (2014), Lithuania and Romania (2018) - all 'hosting' CIA's black sites - had violated the European Convention on Human Rights. ECHR ordered these countries govs to pay both Zubaydah and al-Nashiri in damages. Legal cases regarding either Zubaydah or him and other detainees were mentioned multiple times in the news; honestly, I don't get a half of them. In April 2023, a decision of United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention was published:

The UN body reached damning findings on the unlawfulness of Guantanamo, torture and enforced disappearance by the US and the 6 other states that share 'joint responsibility' for the ongoing violations of our client's rights. It called for Abu Zubaydah's immediate release, after 21 years of arbitrary detention without charge or trial, as well as compensation and the investigation of what it terms "crimes against humanity."

Zubaydah was cooperative in the beginning, when questioned by Ali Soufan and his FBI partner. The interrogators were showing him photos from the FBI most wanted list. One of them was shown on accident, but Zubaydah recognized the unidentified man - Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. He was known to the FBI as 'KSM', and it was a surprise to both learn his identity and that he was allegedly a mastermind of 9/11 attack (apart from involvement in other attacks). After 10 days, Soufan was told to stop talking to Zubaydah. CIA agents thought that the detainee knew more - that could be obtained with EITs.

He was at first assumed to be a No. 3 member of the Al-Qaeda; was never a formal member, though. The 'corrected' versions of his affiliations are often vague, e.g. 'played a key role in Al Qaeda’s communications', ran a 'mujahedeen facilitation network', and had close contact with Al-Qaeda No. 2 member at the time (of the capture) . Apart from this, he was 'generally aware' of planning for the 9/11 attacks, 'possibly' coordinated training at a camp called Khalden when two of the future hijackers were there, and 'possibly' had advance knowledge on two attack (1998 and 2000),... The more precize mentions seem to focus on supporting the trainings in various ways.

Here's a 23 mins long video from Democracy Now!, including interviews with two guests: one of Zubaydah's lawyers and one guy involved in catching him (also CIA whistleblower). Timestamps after the intro:

1;30 to 3;35 - trailer of 'Forever Prisoner'.

3;35 to 10;30 - an interview about the Zubaydah's story, from capture through the early detention and torture to the report.

10;30 - beginning of the part strictly about the torture drawings and report. Also about their significance. 92 tapes destroyed by the CIA are mentioned (correction: from which 2 were showing the interrogation of Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri)

Democracy Now! has alredy released a video on him, 'Abu Zubaydah Was Tortured for Years at CIA Black Sites. Biden Is Trying to Keep the Abuse Secret', in October 2021. However, only the black and white drawings were included.

⠀ZUBAYDAH'S DRAWINGS :marseysatisfied:

All 40 drawings were published in a report 'American Torturers: FBI and CIA Abuses at Dark Sites and Guantánamo' (download here), which you may have seen mentioned in the news, literally a month ago. However, certain drawings - both black and white, and these in color - were already published at least in 2018. It has both drawings accompanying the text and, later, pictures posted separately (in higher resolution). How these 130 pages look like:

  1. First half is not so organized text (both informative and comments on the drawings and the torture depicted) with accompanying drawings. The second half is drawings in higher resolution, followed by the author's descriptions, only referring to this scene.

  2. The drawings are far more detailed than the typical illustrative ones, which you can usually see in Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch Reports. It applies both to the amount of details and covered reactions. The faces of some of the interrogators and staff members had to be even censored for this reason.

  3. Descriptions are also detailed, both these of the actions and the emotional sides. Mentions of how it looks like on moral / religious side are quite common.

A few I've chosen on my own criteria are below, for the rest - check the linked report. About the accuracy, for these wondering:

His drawings dovetail with the recent accounts of Dr. James Mitchell, a chief architect of the torture regime, who both wrote a book on EITs and testified in hearings on Guantanamo. These sources, together with the report of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, provide the most complete – and compelling – account to date of America’s torture program.

Drawing 11. Exposing the detainee to the extreme cold. Fan and AC were cooling down the room, in which detainee was subjected to cold water while naked. Both the investigators and guards had proper clothing, suitable for low temperatures.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/52wljklr.png

Drawing 15. A wooden soffin-sized box, in which the detainee was left until urinating on himself. It had two hatches, one for talking, another one for pouring water. During the interrogation, it was filled till the point of detainee's face - he wouldn't drown, but was already coughing off water.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/wprqhhf.png

Drawing 16. Restraining the detainee in such a way that they both can't stand straight and sit down. Insects could be intentionally put there (it's also known that detainees' phobias were used, once realized), also in large numbers. Zubaydah mentioned one or two scorpions, which were scary themselves, but even more when randomly disappearing from his field of view.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/39nh54p8.png

Drawing 23. For most of the time, if no interrogation or torture was going on, the detainees were wearing a hood. It could cover a headphones, ducktaped to one's head, either with the ear muffs (completely cutting off sounds) or with blasting music.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/kebswyk.png

Drawing 24. One of a few scenes showing the female interrogator, improperly clothed, on purpose. In this case, the detainee was nearly hallucinating because of weeks of sleep deprivation, sitting naked, hungry and in cold. During the interrogation, two men in thick clothing were present. The female interrogator was very lightly clothed, and the detainee thought at first it's just a hallucination. He found it unacceptable to be forced to sit naked straight in front of a woman. During half an hour, she didn't get any answers from him, and left shaking from anger and cold.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/7nwpiuvf.png

Here is Drawing 25, another female interrogator scene.

I screamed at them that day, saying, “If you don’t want to respect me, respect this (female) interrogator…respect her feminism. Don’t be animals.”

They beat me hard until it felt as if my legs had fallen off; my genitals became more exposed rather than dangle. [...] I kept refusing and they kept beating me, thinking that I’m arrogant to deal with a female interrogator and for not respecting a woman, as they told me. On the contrary, I wasn’t being disrespectful, I refused because I was respecting her feminism. Though, I didn’t respect her as a person who agree to be part of this filthy work.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/ffmy81j.png

Drawing 27. Forced cavity search. If the detainee refused, he would be slammed on the floor, and the search was performed more violently. He claimed that it happened 'before, during and after movement from one cell to another; or from one prison to another; or from one country to another; or from one mode of transportation to another'. Usually, a finger was inserted, but sometimes it was a plastic, metal or wooden object. It also could happen that for the more humiliation, a female was watching, or guys were laughing at the detainee and mocking him.

(He isn't the only one mentioning the intentional, rather than 'natural'/spontaneous laughter, directed at certain type of actions)

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/kphdmrv.png

Drawing 29. Forced rectal feeding and hydration. Technically - just a sexual abuse, because:

A coalition of medical physicians and professors stated that the practice “simply doesn’t make physiological sense,” and thus “there is no current medical reason” for its use. In referring to the CIA’s practice, it specified: “Pureed food and nutritional supplements, such as Ensure, should never be administered rectally,” as the colon cannot absorb pureed food. Although the CIA has tried to defend its actions as consistent with medical necessity, rectal feeding has little value in sustaining life or administering nutrients, “since the colon and rectum cannot absorb much besides salt, glucose and a few minerals and vitamins.” The larger U.S. medical community has been unified in its opposition to both rectal feeding, and, to a lesser but nevertheless significant extent, rectal rehydration, as humiliating and barbaric treatment that has “no place . . . in medical treatment today.”

(look up 'Rectal Feeding, Rape, and Torture in the U.S. Interrogation and Detention Program' for more)

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/3rx7ge8.png

Drawing 32. Rape threats. The detainee was stripped to the table (for hours or days), with upper body tilted. Previous drawings were showing force-feeding and hydrating - either anally or by tube inserted into the nasal opening. Staff members were trying to do this before he became unconscious. At the time, the prisoner would stay stripped to the table, and either piss or defecate under himself. The interrogations started from beating the rear end of the prisoner's body; sometimes hitting hands or feet, too. Threatening the detainee with raping him with a stick till the point of bleeding. Then - threats of 'just' raping, either him or the wife, daughter, mother (depends on the family), no matter their ages.

There was a word lacking in the text, '[...] and thinks'. I assume, from the context, it was about the interrogators saying and apparently thinking the things mentioned. And it were doubts about whether these techniques are even legal, or if they will regret it later, or maybe it were putting them in trouble. Abu Zubaydah wrote about his associations or moral views once again (it's quite common in this report), mentioning how the dark sunglasses and bandana made the interrogator look rather like a carjacker or another criminal. He managed to talk with one of them - before leaving the CIA black site - aware of him being 'the wrong guy', and dude felt like crossing the line in what he was ordered to do.

⠀NEED MORE? :marseysweating:

What if you want more torture and actually good depictions or descriptions? Have a list. I will shortly explain what's exceptional about this one.

  1. Testimony of Jumah al Dossari. It is well-written, really detailed, and this also applies to the physiological level. Mainstream sites don't usually go into shit, piss, blood and humiliation in related topics. Here, author goes. If I was reading similar descriptions without knowing the context and not seeing Amnesty's site url, I'd think it was some description from an article on problems in the porn industry.

  2. Documentary 'Guantanamo Guidebook' (2005). It is on YouTube as a 'Inside Gitmo: Terrifying Methods of Torture at Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp' but age-restricted, I will put the links in the comments. It features volunteers put in the softcore procedures for a short period (around 2 days); on the other side were retired US Army interrogators and guards. You can see the volunteers do not enjoy it. This doc has sparked controversy and raised worries around the time of release, because of e.g. 'accustoming viewers to torture' (???), 'not having a clear point' or being a 'reality-show' in its convention.

  3. 'Guantanamo Diary' (2015, then in 2017 published with previously redacted parts), by Mohamedou Ould Slahi, who was imprisoned for 14 years without charges. I barely checked through it, as the book has around 460 pages. Descriptions are detailed (emotional state descriptions have a different style than in the testimony linked previously), including the dialogues and some black humour. The author points out the irony of both the general approach towards the detainees and of specific methods of torture, like earrape with a song that has love-themed lyrics.

⠀THE INTERROGATION OF OMAR KHADR :marseyunamused:

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/jf7yi0ig.png

On the left: Omar Khadr when 15 yo, photo taken in Afghanistan in 2002. On the right: photo 'recent' in 2015 (undated, though), taken in Bowden Institution in Innisfail, Alta., when Khadr was serving the rest of his sentence.

Khadr, born on 19th of September 1986 in Toronto, spent his first few years in Pakistan. In 1995, his father got arrested in connection with bombing of the Egyptian embassy in Islamabad, later freed. In 1996, the family moved to Canada for a short period, then returning to Jalalabad in Taliban-controlled eastern Afghanistan, where they lived in Osama bin Laden's compound. Khadr spent the last few years before the arrest mostly on travelling between Jalalabad, Kabul (Afghanistan) and Peshawar (Pakistan; family owned a house there). He finished the 8th grade in school, and claimed he enjoyed school and horse riding as a teenager. On 27th of July 2002, coalition forces moved in on Khadr's compound. Two Afghan gov soldiers were killed, and several US troops were wounded. U.S. Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Speer was killed by a grenade, and Khadr was accused of throwing it - according to one witness, whose testimony (and a whole story) is questionable. The teenager himself was badly wounded. Arrested that day, he was transferred to Guantanamo in October 2002.

Below is around 8 mins long footage, showing the different angles of the same interrogation by Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). The original footage was about 7 hours long, and was recorded over four days - from 13th to 16th of February 2003. It appeared in the news in July 2008.

This report (link is directly to download) summarizes the four days mentioned, and the conclusions (or lack of them).

A more detailed timeline is linked in the sources (CBC website). In May 2017, Khadr underwent a 19-hour operation in Edmonton on a shoulder damaged during his capture. Two months later, the government publicly apologized Khadr, and it was confirmed that $10.5 million payout - mentioned a few days earlier - already took place.

CHILD WARNING (Child Warning) Human hamburger (edgelord post) - WPD EXCLUSIVE + a piece of super edgy "mail art"

Hambuger Lady raises the cringe bar to a new level and screams 45 year old edgelord who lives in his grandma's garage and is a huge fan of Andy Warhol and owns all of Jim Morrison's self-published poetry books.

The lyrics to the "song"

By far the worst is the hamburger lady

We must heal them for the qualified technicians

Worst

Alternating nights unrelievedly

She's lying there

Hamburger Lady

Hamburger Lady

She's dying, she is burned from the waist up, she is burned from the waist up

On her arm

Her ear is burned, her nose is burned

Her eyelashes and her fingers are burned

She can't hold anything

And even with medical advances, there's no end in sight

For Hamburger Lady

When somebody tells you that there is a level of pain beyond which the human mind

Lady on the potty chair

Unrelievedly

She's burned from the waist down

That's what keeps her alive, the tubes

And the nice nurses

Hamburger Lady

Hamburger Lady

She's okay if you change the tubes

Tubes in her legs, the tubes in her arms

She's okay

Then he came out and saw one of the burn nurses

She was eating a can of chili-mac

And he flashed on the carpet, flashed on the floor

The Hamburger Lady

Stretch since she came to us

Unrelievedly

The qualified technicians

Hamburger Lady

Hamburger Lady

[...]

The potty chair

Qualified technicians

Keeps her alive

The "mail art" letter the song is based on.

By far the worst is the hamburger lady, and because of shortage right now of ‘qualified technicians', e.g. technicians who can work with her and keep their last meal down, Screwloose Lauritzen and I have been alternating nights with her, unrelievedly. If you put a 250-lb meatloaf in the oven and then burned it and then followed that by propping it up on a potty-chair to greet you at 11pm each night, you would have some description of these past two weeks. Which is to say the worst I seen since viet napalms. When somebody tells you that there is a level of pain beyond which the human mind cannot retain consciousness, please tell them to write me. In point of fact this lady has not slept more than 3-5 minutes at a stretch since she came to us – that was over two weeks ago and, thanks to medical advances, there is no end in sight; from the waist (waste?) up everything is burned off, ears, nose etc – lower half is untouched and that, I guess, is what keeps her alive. I took one guy in to help me change tubes and he did alright, that is alright till he came out, then he spotted one of the burn nurses (pleasant smiling zombies) eating a can of chili-mac at the desk, and that did it: he flashed on the carpet. It is fucking insane is what it is.

The 1999 Tokaimura accident occurred in a small fuel preparation plant operated by JCO (formerly Japan Nuclear Fuel Conversion Co.) in Tokai, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, and claimed the lives of two technicians: 35-year-old Hisashi Ouchi (left) and 40-year-old Masato Shinohara (right):

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/16845301960648258.webp

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/1684530198016711.webp

On September 30th, 1999, Shinohara was pouring buckets of uranyl nitrate into a nuclear fuel tank, while Ouchi held a funnel:

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/16845301963384988.webp

When Shinohara poured a seventh bucket, a flash of blue light (Cherenkov radiation) was seen, accompanied by a loud smacking noise. Both men became nauseous, and passed out. A third man, supervisor Yutaka Yokogawa, was sitting at a desk several meters away, and phoned for help. Yokogawa recovered in the hospital, but was later one of six men arrested for negligence at the Tokaimura facility. It’s believed the JCO (Japanese Atomic Fuel Conversion Co.), which went out of business in 2003, had cut corners on safety and training. The tank Ouchi and Shinohara were working with had no buffer which could have prevented such a criticality from occurring.

The estimated radiation doses of the 3 men are: Ouchi 16-25 Grays (Gy), Shinohara 6-12 Gy, and Yokogawa 1-4.5 Gy. It’s important to understand that these numbers are whole-body averages. In Ouchi’s case, he absorbed radiation disproportionately into his front right side, and particularly his right forearm:

When Ouchi arrived at the hospital, he was still in the “latent phase” of acute radiation syndrome (ARS), where the patient is relatively stable before deteriorating. He looked tan, and complained mainly of pain in his right arm. This early hospital photo also shows Ouchi as having an enlarged parotid gland in his cheek. Salivary glands are highly susceptible to radiation, and the mouth eventually dries out to the point where the victim is unable to talk or eat food.

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/16845301966241045.webp

On the fourth or fifth day, doctors’ worst fears were confirmed when a biopsy of Ouchi’s bone marrow showed extensive destruction of the chromosomes:

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/16845301967799282.webp

Ouchi was going to have a hard time regenerating cells, and the first symptoms would appear in his skin, blood, and gastrointestinal mucus membranes, as those cells undergo the most rapid rate of division. Ouchi had to be wrapped in a special product called Trex Gauze, since ordinary gauze, as well as towels and medical tape, would rip dead skin cells off his body.

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/16845301969075565.webp

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/1684530197016592.webp

On day 11, Ouchi lost his composure, proclaiming “I am not a guinea pig!” The lead physician who treated Ouchi and Shinohara, Dr. Kazuhiko Maekawa, admitted to the media in October that Ouchi’s dose of radiation was lethal. However, under Japanese law, for Ouchi to be euthanized, he would need to give consent, and be near-death. Some of Ouchi’s last written messages, after he was hooked up to a ventilator and lost the ability to speak, expressed desire to go home. Whether Maekawa kept Ouchi alive as a “guinea pig” or not, doctors were legally obligated to treat Ouchi until nothing more could be done.

Despite being given 200 mg of Fentanyl per hour, in conjunction with sedatives, doctors and nurses discerned pain from Ouchi’s facial expressions. He was given a novel type of stem cell transplant from his sister, which allowed for a temporary recovery of bone marrow and other tissues. In the end, the sister’s transplanted cells developed chromosome damage. Doctors believed this was either a result of the neutrons which struck Ouchi's body turning certain nutrients (i.e. sodium) radioactive, or Ouchi's own cells mutating to produce radioactive oxygen. The sister also provided a swath of skin from her thigh to use for cultured skin grafts. The grafts loosened, and did not adhere well, as Ouchi was losing up to 20 L of fluid per day through his skin.

On day 59, Ouchi’s heart stopped beating for 50 minutes. The strain on his heart had been comparable to a person running a marathon. He was resuscitated, and given drugs to ease the burden on his heart, but was now braindead. On day 63, Ouchi developed a rare syndrome called hemophagocytosis, which is normally associated with the Epstein-Barr virus. The lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) made from the sister’s stem cells were recognizing Ouchi’s own cells as foreign, and attacking them. My guess is that this was due to the extreme breakdown of Ouchi’s DNA, to the point where his cells would appear foreign, or non-human, to the immune system.

On day 83, December 21st, late at night, Ouchi experienced another cardiac arrest, and the decision was made between doctors and family to not resuscitate. Remarkable organ changes were seen at autopsy. Ouchi’s intestines, which had produced up to 3 L of bloody or watery, green diarrhea throughout his ordeal, had lost their villi, and resembled a “writhing serpent” filled with blood.

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/1684530197191005.webp

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/16845301972915125.webp

Muscle cells undergo a slow rate of division (10-15 years), and are therefore less susceptible to radiation damage; the cells actually have time to repair the chromosomes, provided they’re not too damaged. But Ouchi’s dose of radiation was so extreme, his muscles lost their fiber, and detached from the bones. The only normal-looking organ in Ouchi’s body was his heart, which doctors interpreted as his will to live.

Shinohara's prognosis was better than Ouchi's, but still grim, as only one man from the Chernobyl disaster, out of twenty-two, survived an effective dose of radiation greater than 6 Gy. Because a suitable hematopoietic stem cell donor could not be found for Shinohara, he was given an infusion of stem cells from a fetal umbilical cord. He was still conscious in January, and taken to the hospital gardens in his wheelchair for New Year’s Day. In February, he contracted pneumonia, and on April 27th, day 211 of irradiation, he died. His kidneys, liver, pancreas, bone marrow, and muscles had all deteriorated, and he had widespread thrombotic microangiopathy in his small intestine. Doctors got about 90% of the skin grafts to adhere to Shinohara, but for unclear reasons, the engrafted skin became hard and brittle. A crunching noise was heard when his skin was cut into at autopsy.

The pronunciation of Ouchi's name is not quite like the English "ouch" it is more like "oh-uchi." These two horrific photos, which appear in numerous blog articles about Tokaimura, are NOT of Ouchi:

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/1684530198130035.webp

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/16845301982928228.webp

The bottom photo might be of Shinohara (but it might also be of a Chernobyl person) as the white strips mirror a cultured skin graft product called "Bio-Skin," which was used in the Tokaimura case.

The skinless man on the bed has also had his right leg amputated below the knee. Ouchi never underwent amputation, as doctors considered it too dangerous.

EFFORTPOST What happens to pedophiles and sex offenders in prison || INFOPOST

Video above is an alleged pedophile being burned in a Brazil prison :marseycupid: :marseyupmarsey:

I unfortunately do not have much context for the event. The incident likely occurred because in many Brazil prisons, there is 1 guard per 30 prisoners, although the recommended prisoner to guard ratio is 1:5.

With Brazilian prisons, there are even inmates who are considered “keyholders” who are given keys and have access to every cell. They often are drug dealers, selling cell space, and it even leads to instances of rape and violence.

Brazil has had an extensive history of unusual and extremely unprofessional enforcement in their prisons, leading to riots, escapes, murder, going so far as beheading. It is a saying that "going to a Brazil prison is a death sentence."

What happens to pedophiles and sex offenders in prison? Do they always get caught?

It would be safe to assume that pedophiles and child abusers do not have a “fun time” in jail. If not in complete isolation, protective custody, or the reason for their incarceration is not confidential… Many are assaulted, raped and killed before their sentence is complete.

HOWEVER is very common for sexual abuse to remain unreported, and even for incidents that are reported, are left unsolved. Those convicted of their crimes do not always get the most harsh sentencing; although it is absolutely needed and deserved.

Some examples of those who got away with sexual offenses and sexually abusing children:

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/17083086298094676.webp

Christopher Betler, a 20 year old New York man, plead guilty to the rape and molestation of 4 girls as young as 15. The crime occurred when he was 17. The judge originally only gave him only 2 years of probation; Betler violated his probation by accessing pornagraphy on his computer instead got 8 years of probation, no jail time.

Maria Childers, A 25 year old Kentucky transgender woman, Got a plea deal to avoid jail time after sexually abusing an infant in a daycare center. She hired a transgender advocate lawyer.

She was arrested on $100,000 bond and released last month, almost a year later. She will now remain free if she agrees to make no contact with children and stay away from the daycare she worked at.

This post is NOT meant for hate or debate about transgender individuals, I used this case an example to emphasize how much sex offenders can truly get away with.

https://www.blackburncenter.org/post/2016/09/14/why-are-judges-giving-light-sentences-to-rapists

Why do they get away with it? What is rape culture?

There has been a rise in instances where United States judges give extremely lenient, and wildly inappropriate sentences to those who commit sexual crimes. The pattern of this happening is speculated to be because of the uprising of "rape culture". A culture, trend, and even mindset that normalizes sexual abuse, claims it is inevitable and blames their victims. Victim blaming is often claimed to be a psychological phenomenon, when not wanting to believe someone you know and care about did something bad to another individual.

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/170832840167738.webp

If you are a victim of sexual abuse, yes, even if you are a male, I hope you know it is NOT your fault and you did not do anything to deserve it. Please know that you are not alone.

Consent and sexual education

The lines of consent are askew and blurred, there is NO legal definition of consent, and it even varies state to state. There are even different legal definitions of rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse in each state as well. MANY schools in the United States do not discuss sexual education, consent, and boundaries. In a study conducted by the CDC, they found 8 in 10 teenagers didn't get sex education until after they'd already had sex.

But in a survey of more than 3,000 high school students and young adults nationwide, the overwhelming majority reported they had never been taught how to avoid sexually harassing others or to cope with being groped, catcalled, or bullied in sexual ways. If children and teens are not taught how to respect the boundaries of their peers, or taught anything about how healthy sexual interaction is supposed to be, how will they ever grasp the concept of consent and safe sexual interaction as an adult?

Believe what you want about sexual education but just know, consent is not only a sex skill, but also a life skill.

The brutality of prisons, and how they treat pedophiles and sex offenders

Many prisoners take it amongst themselves in a form of street justice, wanting to gain respect from their peers, and possibly getting their anger out about their incarceration on someone who deserves it.

Many prisoners are parents, many have been abused themselves, and do not tolerate that kind of person in their environment. Prisoners torment pedophiles and child abusers by defecating and urinating in their food and cells. Taking their belongings and food, assaulting, torturing them and it is even common for their throats to get slit as a tradition in certain states.

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/17083303336464078.webp

Jonathan Watson, a life sentenced prisoner, killed 2 pedophiles who were both convicted for sexually assaulting a child under the age of 14. He beat them both with a cane. He gave warnings to the guards of his plans to do so, they did not stop him.

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/17083303335795147.webp

Richard Huckle, considered one of the UK's worst pedophiles, having sexually abused over 200 children, was brutally murdered by another inmate named Paul Fitzgerald. Paul was planning on murdering 2-3 other inmates but claimed he had "too much fun" murdering Richard. He strangled Richard with a cord, then shoved a pen inside of his brain. Huckle was found gagged and bound by his hands and feet with severe injuries to his face and with an incision made on his neck from a shank made with a melted toothbrush.

Victims

Rhonda Jetmore

On January 10, 1989, Rhonda Jetmore, 27, a prostitute, entered into a sexual transaction with Suff. The agreement turned violent when he began choking her. She struck him with a flashlight she had in her hand, causing Suff to lose his grip, allowing her to briefly escape. Suff tackled her to the ground and began ripping off her clothes. He stuck his finger in her mouth and she bit down, causing one of her teeth to break. Suff pulled back and Jetmore was able to run to the door, but was tackled again. As she pleaded with Suff to let her go, he lost track of his glasses. She used her flashlight to shine a light on them and when Suff went to pick them up, she ran out the door and flagged down a car. The passenger, who she happened to know, pulled out a gun and fired at Suff, and she was able to escape.

Kimberly Lyttle

On June 28, 1989, Kimberly Lyttle, 28, was found manually strangled to death on the side of the road in Lake Elsinore. Her autopsy revealed that she had been hit in the head, and she had cigarette burns on her arms and other areas of her body; all injuries occurring prior to her death. She was covered with a blue bath towel, which was found to have red, white, and blue fibers that were matched to a sleeping bag in Suff's van.

Christina Leal

On December 13, 1989, the body of Christina Leal, 23, was found strangled and stabbed to death on a Quail Valley hillside; she was last seen the night before. Her autopsy revealed marks around her wrists and ankles, indicating she was bound, scratch marks on her face, a black eye, four stab wounds in the middle of her chest, at least two knife wounds on her genitalia, and one of her nipples was partially removed; all antemortem. A lightbulb had been inserted into her uterus and was recovered intact.

Darla Jane Ferguson

On January 18, 1990, Darla Ferguson, 23, was found strangled in Riverside, just half a mile from the body of Kimberly Lyttle. She was found with her legs propped up and a trash bag pulled over the top half of her body, tied at the waist with a rope. Her wrists had been bound and she suffered blunt force trauma before death.

Carol Lynn Miller (victim in video)

On February 9, 1990, Carol Miller, 35, was found nude, with the exception of a shirt pulled over her head, in a grapefruit orchard in Highgrove. The frenulum connecting her upper lip to her gums was torn, indicating she was struggling while being smothered. She had no trauma to her neck. She was stabbed 5 times prior to death. Next to her body was a peeled and eaten grapefruit.

Cheryl Coker

On November 6, 1990, the body of Cheryl Coker, 33, was found in Riverside, partially inside a dumpster. She was found strangled to death, possibly with a wire, with such great force it cut the skin of her neck. Her right breast had been severed post-mortem and was found on a dirt road 30 feet away. A shoe print matching the size, shape, pattern, and wear of shoes belonging to Suff were found at the scene.

Susan Melissa Sternfeld (victim in video)

On December 21, 1990, Susan Sternfeld, 27, was found strangled, nude, and intentionally posed, near a dumpster in Riverside.

Kathleen Leslie Milne

On January 19, 1991, the body of Kathleen Milne, also known as Kathy Puckett, 42, was found nude, lying on a red robe, near a pile of trash, north of Lake Elsinore. A white sock had been stuffed in the back of her throat. Her death was ruled asphyxiation due to the combination of strangulation and the sock blocking her airway.

Sherry Ann Latham

On July 4, 1991, Sherry Latham, 37, was found nude, face down, in Lake Elsinore. Her cause of death was determined to be strangulation, but due to decomposition, no determination could be made on the method.

Kelly Marie Hammond

On August 16, 1991, Kelly Hammond, 27, of Rubidoux, was found strangled in an alley in Corona. Her nude body appeared to be posed; her right arm was bent and tucked under her abdomen, her left arm was bent with her hand on the ground and palm facing upward, her left leg was drawn to her chest, and her right leg was extended outward. She had two lacerations, which occurred prior to death, on her forehead. Her autopsy revealed her death to be caused by strangulation, with acute opiate intoxication a possible contributing factor.

Catherine McDonald

On September 13, 1991, Catherine McDonald, 30, the only black victim attributed to Suff, was found in Lake Elsinore. Her body was also posed; her legs were spread apart but her feet were together, her arms outstretched to the top of her head. She was four months pregnant. Before she died, she was stabbed in the chest three times. She also had a gaping cut on the left side of her neck. Her right breast was removed post-mortem, and she suffered a stab wound, as well as other lacerations, to her genitals, some before and some after death. Her official cause of death was multiple stab wounds to the neck as well as compression. Shoe prints of the same pattern as the other murders were also near McDonald's body.

Delliah Zamora (victim in video)

On October 30, 1991, the body of Delliah Zamora, 35, was found strangled in Glen Avon. She had fingernail injuries consistent with clawing at a ligature, though method was unable to be determined. Her larynx was crushed and broken down the middle, which would require an extreme amount of pressure.

Eleanor Casares On December 23, 1991, Eleanor Casares, 39, was found in an orange grove near the intersection of Jefferson Street and Victoria Avenue in Riverside. She was stabbed in the chest and strangled. Her breast was removed post-mortem.

A number of additional murders were attributed to Suff, though he was never charged, with the exception of Cherie Payseur:

Michelle Yvette Gutierrez

On October 29, 1986, Michelle Gutierrez, 26, was found in a drainage ditch in the Riverside area.

Charlotte Jean Palmer

On December 10, 1986, Charlotte Palmer, 25, was found near Romoland. Though cause of death could not be determined, authorities believe she was smothered.

Linda Ann Ortega

On April 29, 1988, Linda Ortega, 37, was found nude and stabbed to death near the rodeo grounds in Lake Elsinore.

Martha Bess Young

On May 2, 1988, the nude body of Martha Young, 27, of Albuquerque, was found just a few miles away from Linda Ortega. Her cause of death was determined to be a combination of strangulation and overdose of amphetamines. She was previously reported missing, first by her boyfriend, Joseph Shiflitt, who called her mother on April 10, 1988, and then officially by her mother, 17 days later.

Diane Mae Talavera

On January 17, 1989, Diana Talavera, 37, was found strangled on the beach in Lake Elsinore.

Julie Lynn Angel

On November 11, 1989, the body of Julie Angel, 36, was found bludgeoned to death in Alberhill, on a street her mother drove every day for work.

Cherie Michelle Payseur (victim in video)

On April 27, 1991, Cherie Payseur, 24, was found on a flower bed behind a bowling alley in Riverside. She was initially found nude, but a patron covered the body with a jean jacket before police arrived. She had been hit in the face, and though no official cause of death could be determined, she was thought to have been suffocated. A number of shoe prints were left at the scene, including a partial shoe print on the small of Payseur's back. The analyzed shoe impressions were thought to be the same as the prints from the scene of Cheryl Coker's murder. The semen collected from Payseur's body revealed two donors, rendering the results inconclusive. The most intensive bands, however, matched Suff, so he could not be excluded as a donor. Suff was charged with Payseur's murder, but the jury was deadlocked, and he was not convicted.

Necklacing - Lynchings in South Africa - WPD EXCLUSIVE + the first Necklacing ever recorded by a news crew + other Necklacing videos - 4 videos

Necklacing is a method of extrajudicial summary execution and torture carried out by forcing a rubber tire drenched with petrol around a victim's chest and arms, and setting it on fire. The term "necklace" originated in the 1980s in black townships of apartheid South Africa where suspected apartheid collaborators were publicly executed in this fashion.

Today necklacing is carried out in south africa as a form of street justice and done to people accused of everything from theft and robbery to rape and murder and everything in between.

Comedian dies of cardiac arrest during performance - audience laughs at his death rattle

Comedian Tommy Cooper dies of cardiac arrest during a performance (April 1984).

In the wings, show producer David Bell asked Cooper's son if the fall was part of the act. He replied that his father had a bad back, and wouldn't be able to get back up if he fell on purpose. After it became apparent that Cooper was in trouble, Alasdair MacMillan cued the orchestra to play music for an unscripted commercial break (noticeable because of several seconds of blank screen while LWT's master control contacted regional stations to start transmitting advertisements) and Tarbuck's manager tried to pull Cooper back through the curtains. They continued the show after the commercial break. [Wikipedia]

"One of Cooper's stunts was to pay the exact taxi fare and when leaving the cab, slip something into the taxi driver's pocket, saying, "Have a drink on me." That something would turn out to be a tea bag."
