The Bodies of Mt. Everest - Photos and Backstories

Death on the highest mountain on earth

When you hear the name Rainbow Valley, you might think of a picturesque landscape. However, the reality is far grimmer. Rainbow Valley is an area below the northern ridge of Mount Everest, situated at an altitude above 8000 meters. This stretch is littered with the remains of climbers who did not survive their ascent. Tragically, Mount Everest claims lives every year, and Rainbow Valley has become the final resting place for over 200 climbers. The name โ€˜Rainbow Valley' comes from the bright and colorful jackets the bodies of the hikers wear.

โ€˜Green Boots' is the nickname given to the body of an unidentified climber that became a macabre landmark on the north face of Mount Everest. The climber is believed to be Tsewang Paljor, an Indian mountaineer who died in the 1996 Mount Everest disaster. He was found wearing distinctive green Koflach boots.

Due to the extreme conditions on Everest, the body remained preserved for many years, serving as a grim reminder of the dangers of climbing the world's tallest mountain. Green Boots was a common sight for climbers on the North Face route, located in a limestone alcove at 27,900 feet (8,500 meters), until it was finally removed in 2014 by Chinese climbers.

The exact identification of Green Boots remains a mystery, though several climbers have claimed to know who it is. However, Green Boots will likely remain unidentified due to the difficulty of recovering bodies at such high altitudes.

The story of Francys Arsentiev is one of the most tragic tales from Mount Everest. Known as the mountain's โ€˜Sleeping Beauty,' Francys Arsentiev was an American climber who passed away on Everest in 1998.

Francys achieved the remarkable feat of ascending the mountain on May 22, 1998, becoming the first American woman to do so without supplemental oxygen. However, she perished on her descent. Her husband, Sergei Arsentiev, was also part of the expedition.

As they descended, the weather on Everest deteriorated dramatically. The lack of supplemental oxygen became a critical issue, hindering their ability to descend. Stranded by the severe weather, Francys was forced to remain on the mountain for several days. Tragically, Sergei also succumbed a day later while attempting to help her. Francys Arsentiev's final resting place earned her the nickname 'Sleeping Beauty' among climbers.

The disappearance of her husband, Sergei, was solved the following year when members of an expedition discovered Sergei's body lower on the mountain face. It appeared he had died from a fall while attempting to rescue his wife.

Hannelore Schmatz was the first German woman to summit Everest. She summited in 1979 but died at 8,200 meters (27,000 feet) during her descent. Her body remained there for many years until it was eventually blown further down the mountain.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/0j7ixkrb.webp https://pomf2.lain.la/f/kfmsb7hk.jpg

She was on an expedition via the South East Ridge route with her husband, Gerhard Schmatz. Gerhard, the expedition leader, was 50 years old at the time and became the oldest man to summit Everest. The American climber Ray Genet was also part of the same expedition and also died during the descent.

Exhausted from the climb, the group decided to bivouac at 28,000 feet (8,500 meters) as night approached, despite their Sherpa guides urging them to continue descending. Ray Genet died later that night. Although distressed, the Sherpa and Hannelore chose to continue their descent the next day. At 27,200 feet (8,300 meters), Hannelore sat down, requested "Water, water" from her Sherpa, and then passed away. Sungdare Sherpa, one of the guides, stayed with her body and consequently lost most of his fingers and toes due to the harsh conditions.

While Genet's body disappeared under the snow, Schmatz's body remained visible for years, leaning against her backpack.

In 1984, an expedition attempted to recover Schmatz's body but the team also fell to their deaths.

Eventually, the wind blew Schmatz's remains over the edge and down the hill.

In 2006, British mountaineer David Sharp who died of extreme cold.

David Sharp (15 February 1972 โ€“ 15 May 2006) was an English mountaineer who died near the summit of Mount Everest. His death sparked controversy and debate, as numerous climbers passed by him while he was dying, all on their way to and from the summit. Despite some climbers' attempts to help, their efforts were ultimately in vain.

Sharp was climbing alone and aimed to reach the summit of Everest without using supplementary oxygen.

He had opted for a bare-bones "basic services" package, which did not include support beyond a certain altitude or a Sherpa climbing partner. Sharp was part of a loosely organized group of 13 independent climbers, many of which also perished that year while attempting to summit.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/ehwkow2d.jpg https://pomf2.lain.la/f/t76b31v2.webp

Other climbers, who seen him, maintained that they believed Sharp was beyond help on the way up.

He actually died in the same cave as 'Green Boots'.

Sharp's body remained on the mountain but was removed from sight in 2007.

George Mallory (June 18, 1886 โ€“ June 8 or 9, 1924) was an English mountaineer who participated in the first three British Mount Everest expeditions in the early to mid-1920s. He is believed to be the first human to summit Mt. Everest.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/2fbjgtce.webp [George Mallory]

One of the oldest bodies on the mountain wasn't discovered until 1999โ€”nearly 75 years after he died. Mallory was the most famous mountaineer of his time and arguably of any time.

On their final attempt to reach the summit, he and his companion Andrew Irvine were reportedly spotted by British geologist Noel Odell on June 8th at an altitude of approximately 8,500 meters. They then disappeared into the mist and were never seen alive again.

Since neither man returned the question of whether or not they made it remains a mystery.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/82jrcupq.jpg [Mallory somewhere on Everest]

His body was discovered in 1999. He appears to have fallen to his death, and due to his injuries around his waist, it has been suggested that he and Irvine were still roped together when they fell.

When asked why he wanted to climb Evererst Mallory replied, โ€œBecause it's there.โ€

In May 2005, Marko Lihteneker died at approximately 8,800 meters (28,871 feet) on his descent, primarily due to issues with his oxygen system. He was last seen alive just a few meters from the summit, attempting to resolve these problems. His body was later discovered by Chinese porters.

Shriya Shah-Klorfine (January 11, 1979 โ€“ May 19, 2012) was a Nepal-born Canadian woman who died while descending from the summit in 2012.

https://pomf2.lain.la/f/v4om6rm.jpeg

She was an inexperienced climber, who booked a tour to the summit for tens of thousands of dollars to fulfill her lifelong dream.

Her body was on the hillside for about ten days. Afterwards it was carried back down.

Over 310 people died on Mt. Everest. Which is about 3.1% of every climber.

200 bodies remain on Everest.

The retrieval of the bodies is often times extremely dangerous and laborious. That's why most of them stay on the mountain in the place they died or are hidden from view.

2017 shooting

On October 1, 2017, a mass shooting occurred when 64-year-old Stephen Paddock opened fire on the crowd attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada from his 32nd-floor suites in the Mandalay Bay hotel. He fired more than 1,000 rounds, killing 60 people and wounding at least 413. The ensuing panic brought the total number of injured to approximately 867. About an hour later, he was found dead in his room from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Las Vegas Strip is a stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard immediately south of the city of Las Vegas in Clark County, Nevada. The Strip is known for its concentration of casinos and resort hotels, including the 43-story Mandalay Bay southwest of its intersection with Mandalay Bay Road, in the unincorporated town of Paradise.

Las Vegas Village, a 15-acre (6-hectare) lot used for outdoor performances, was located diagonally across the intersection to the northeast and owned by MGM Resorts International. From 2014 onward, the venue hosted the annual Route 91 Harvest country music festival. The 2017 festival ran from September 29 to October 1, with over 22,000 attendees on the final day

https://i.watchpeopledie.tv/images/17182738310620859.webp

The mass shooting occurred between 10:05 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. on October 1, 2017, which was the third and final night of the festival. When the shooting began, country music singer Jason Aldean was giving the closing performance.

Shortly before 10:00 p.m., hotel security guard Jesus Campos was sent to the 32nd floor to investigate an open-door alert. He attempted to open a door that provided immediate access to the floor, but found that it would not open. After Campos entered the floor, he discovered an L-shaped bracket screwed into the door and door frame, which prevented the door from opening. After reporting the discovery to his dispatch center, he heard what he thought was the sound of rapid drilling coming from Room 32โ€“135 and went to investigate the matter. At approximately 10:05 p.m., he was hit in the right thigh by one of about 35 bullets that Paddock fired through the door of his suite. After Campos was hit, he took cover in the alcove between Rooms 32โ€“122 and 32โ€“124 and immediately informed the hotel by radio and cellphone that he had been shot, though he believed he had been shot with a BB or pellet gun. At the same time, maintenance worker Stephen Schuck was on the same floor to fix the door that Campos had reported as being barricaded. The already-wounded Campos encountered Schuck and told him to take cover. Schuck contacted hotel dispatchers over his radio, informed them of the ongoing shooting, and told them to call the police. Neither the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department nor MGM Resorts International, the Mandalay Bay's owner, have confirmed when information about the initial shooting was relayed to the police

After Paddock used a hammer to break two of the windows in both of his suites,he began shooting through them at 10:05 p.m.He ultimately fired over 1,000 rifle rounds approximately 490 yards (450 m) into the festival audience. He initially started out with a few single gunshots before firing in bursts that usually ranged from 80 rounds to 100 rounds. Many people in the crowd initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks.During the shooting, a security fence hindered concertgoers from fleeing the 15-acre (6-hectare) concrete lot. The gunfire continued, with some momentary pauses, over the span of ten minutes and ended by 10:15 p.m. During these pauses (during reload and while the assailant was confronting Campos), most concertgoers down below were able to flee the venue.

In addition to shooting at the concertgoers, Paddock fired eight bullets at a large jet fuel tank at McCarran International Airport 2,000 feet (600 m) away. Two of those bullets struck the exterior of the tank, with one bullet penetrating the tank. The fuel did not explode because jet fuel is mostly kerosene, which is unlikely to ignite when struck by a bullet.

During the shooting, police officers were initially confused whether the shots were coming from the Mandalay Bay, the nearby Luxor hotel, or the festival grounds. There were also multiple false reports of additional shooters at other hotels on the Strip.Officers eventually spotted multiple muzzle flashes from the middle of the northern side of Mandalay Bay and responded to the hotel. At 10:12 p.m., two officers on the 31st floor reported the sounds of gunfire on the floor above them. When officers arrived on the 32nd floor at 10:17 p.m. and encountered Campos a minute later, he directed them to Paddock's room and helped others evacuate. Campos was then directed to seek medical attention for himself.

Between 10:26 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., eight additional officers arrived at the 32nd floor; some of those officers manually breached the door Paddock had screwed shut with the bracket. The gunfire had ceased, and the police moved systematically down the hallway, searching and clearing each room, using a master key that was provided by Campos. At 10:55 p.m., the officers finished evacuating guests. At 11:20 p.m., over an hour after the initial officers arrived on the 32nd floor, police breached Room 32โ€“135 with explosives. Paddock was found dead on the floor from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.[55][56] Police then breached Room 32โ€“134; while entering the hotel suite, an officer accidentally fired a three-round burst from his weapon, but the bullets did not hit anyone. At 11:27 p.m., officers announced over the police radio that a suspect was down

McCarran Airport, adjacent to the shooting site, was shut down for several hours.Approximately 300 people entered the airport grounds as they fled from the shooting.[This prompted officials to shut down all four runways. More than 25 flights were rerouted to ensure that no aircraft would be hit by gunfire, while other flights were canceled before airfield operations resumed at 12:40 a.m. on October 2.

Much of Las Vegas Boulevard was closed while police SWAT teams combed the venue and neighboring businesses. At approximately 2:45 p.m. PDT on October 2, a state of emergency was declared in Clark County.Early on October 2, Sheriff Lombardo identified the suspect as Stephen Paddock.

Sam Waisbren, 30, who died while trying to exit the elevator and into the lobby of Manhattan Promenade tower when it suddenly fell, trapping him between the wall and the elevator shaft on Thursday morning, also suffered 'mechanical asphyxia'.

The terrifying incident occurred at 8:15am Thursday in the luxury apartment building located on East 25th Street and Third Avenue.

On Friday, officials from the city Department of Investigation said they were investigating the tech executives' death, but would not elaborate any further on the focus of their probe.

According to the department's website, the DOI is responsible for 'investigating and referring for criminal prosecution cases of fraud, corruption and other illegal activities by City employees, contractors and others who do business with the City.'

Five other residents were still inside the elevator when it went hurtling downward and dragging Samuel with it.

The residents in the elevator weren't injured, but they did have to wait to be rescued by firefighters.

Shortly after Samuel's death, a resident called New York City's 311 information number to file a complaint about the elevator with the Department of Buildings (DOB).

'A resident was killed in the elevator. Every other week someone is getting stuck in the elevator,' the complaint reads. 'Customer states that the elevator shakes really bad.'

Inspectors from the DOB were at scene taking a look at the elevator on Friday. They will work to determine whether the occurrence was 'a one off' or if action needs to be taken to inspect elevators citywide.

The elevator that killed Waisbren was installed in 1997 and has no history of safety-related violations.
