I was in hospital last year with sepsis and pneumonia. My face swelled up to nearly double its size. Thought you'd like to see it cos it's pretty fucked up. I could hardly blink my left eye, couldn't breathe without oxygen and was in absolute agony.

On January 27, 2013, one of the worst tragedies occurred here in Brazil. A large fire broke out at the Kiss nightclub at around 2:30 am in the university town of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul.

It all happened during the show by the band "Gurizada Fandangueira", in a night of celebrations by students who, for the most part, studied at UFSM (Federal University of Santa Maria).

The band's vocalist, at a certain point, lit a pyrotechnic artifact for external environments inside the club, on top of the stage. The artifact, a flare, sent sparks into the acoustic foam on the stage ceiling as soon as it was lifted by the vocalist.

The fire started and the band soon after a few minutes noticed the fire and all the people panicked. Many people were trampled to death as they tried to flee, But the vast majority confused the exit door with the bathroom, due to the only light there was in the middle of the darkness of the place and all that smoke.

Piles of charred bodies were forming in the bathroom. The burning foam released cyanide, which rendered those young people unconscious and killed them. Whoever entered the bathroom thinking it was the way out, couldn't get out, and then died there...

The Kiss nightclub had not been inspected since 2012 and the fire extinguishers were broken, empty and in some places there were no extinguishers. People who came out alive came back to try to save their colleagues and died. There were 242 deaths and more than 600 injured.

This was the 2nd worst arson accident in the history of Brazil. The first was in the city of Niterói (Rio de Janeiro), where in the 60's, the North American circus caught fire killing more than 500 people.

On January 27, 2023, this tragedy completed 10 years... Justice proved to be flawed and was not served. The band's lead singer and the owner of the Kiss nightclub were arrested and sentenced to 18 to 22 years in prison, however, they were released due to annulment of the jury.

The place where the Kiss nightclub is located is under the administration of AVTSM (Association of Victims of the Tragedy of Santa Maria). The NGO's idea would be to demolish the party house and build a memorial to give dignified peace and quiet to family and friends who lost someone special that night...

I leave here my condolences and my solidarity with the relatives of the victims and survivors of this tragedy. The whole of Brazil still does not believe that this has happened. There were 242 lives taken, 242 destinations interrupted, 242 families that cry to this day. May this never happen again.
