Indiana State Police are investigating a deadly-officer involved shooting at a southern Indiana Walmart.

Members of the Clarksville Police Department opened fire on a man after detectives say he charged at an officer while holding a machete-style knife.

The incident happened at a Walmart on Veteran’s Parkway in Clarksville on Monday night.

Decatur County man put spray foam insulation in tailpipe of judge’s truck, says ISP

The store had actually closed at 11 p.m., but ISP says a man, identified as 30-year-old Daniel Francis Scott, was still there at 11:15 p.m. and ignored requests to leave.

Employees then enlisted Clarksville officers who were already outside of the store due to an unrelated investigation.

Police say Scott, who appeared to have “severe lacerations” to the side of his neck, charged at officers with a machete when approached.

At least one officer fired his department-issued handgun, striking Scott.

Officers gave him medical aid until medics arrived and took him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Marana police officers shot and killed a man after he attempted to flee from his arrest and exchanged gunfire with officers on Saturday.

At about 5:30 p.m., Marana police officers stopped 29-year-old Tobin Pico, who was driving a Jeep Cherokee, for traffic violations in the 4100 Block of West Ina Road. According to the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team, the officers suspected Pico was impaired, and a DUI investigation led them to arrest Pico on suspicion of aggravated DUI.

The critical incident team said that as officers were placing Pico in handcuffs, he escaped and started fleeing southward over several traffic lanes. While running, officers saw Pico pull out a handgun. They shouted commands at him to stop and to put the gun down, but Pico kept running, according to police.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department used aircraft to follow Pico as he made his way to the southern part of the river path along the Canyon Del Oro Wash, where officers saw him fire his handgun into the ground, police said. He then travelled eastward toward an occupied parking lot with open businesses in the 6900 block of North Thornydale Road.

Officials said one of the officers fired his rifle at Pico, causing him to fall before getting up and continuing toward the parking lot. Pico ran into some Maran police officers after he rounded a corner, and they exchanged gunfire with each other, police said. Pico was fatally shot.

Officers and the Northwest Fire District tried to save his life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials. No officers or civilians were hurt during this shooting.

Officials identified the officers who shot at Pico as officers who had served for 12 years, seven years and six years.

Pima Regional Critical Incident Team is investigating the incident further and will present its findings to the Pima County Attorney's Office when the investigation is complete.

The man whom a Columbus police officer fatally shot as he charged the officer with a broken bottle early Saturday morning has been identified.

At 1:11 a.m. Saturday, an officer was investigating reports of a disturbance near South High Street and Rowe Road, when Zachary Bryson, 27, ran toward him with a broken bottle, Columbus police said. The officer shot Bryson, whom medics took to a local hospital, where Bryson died about 1:55 a.m.

According to bodycam footage police released Tuesday, the officer pulls up at 1:11 a.m., as Bryson is standing on the side of the road.

The officer identifies himself as a police officer and asks Bryson if he's alright.

"No, man," Bryson responds.

During the next 90 seconds, the officer keeps asking Bryson if it's OK, to take a deep breath and calm down.

About 1:13 a.m., the officer radios that Bryson has a bottle or something in his hand and is "trying to fight with me."

"Hey, don't do it," the officer says.

"You'll shoot me," Bryson responds.

"No, I don't want to do that. I want to help you," the officer says.

"You'll shoot me," Bryson says again.

"No, no, no. I don't want to do that. I said I want to help you, buddy," the officer says.

"No, man, I think you got out to shoot me," Bryson responds.

"No, I don't want to do that," the officer says.

Bryson begins walking into the road, as vehicles speed by in the opposite direction.

"Don't do that. Watch out; move back," the officer tells Bryson. "Hey, watch out, buddy. Don't come close to me, OK? Move back. I don't want anything to happen to you. I want to help you."

"Buddy, watched out. You're going to get run over. Get back, OK? Hey, do not run out there."

Bryson then picks up a piece of glass from the ground.

"Don't cut yourself, buddy," the officer says. "Stop, don't do it. Do not do it, OK?"

At 1:15 a.m., Bryson starts running toward the officer with the glass in his hand.

"Stop, get back!" the officer shouts.

Bryson pauses momentarily and then continues running toward the officer, who fires at least three times while Bryson is about 10 feet away.

Police have not released the officer's name due to Marsy's Law — a state law created to protect the victims of violent crimes that has been recently used to shield officer identities, with mixed reactions from the public — but said he has worked for the department for 16 years.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting and will forward its report to the Franklin County Prosecutor's office for review and presentation to a grand jury in accordance with city policy.

Officer Nick Pampinella bodycam:

Officer Casie Price bodycam:

https://patch.com/illinois/channahon-minooka/video-morris-cop-kills-alivia-schwab-after-she-wont-drop-her-knife

29 September 2023

MORRIS, IL — Less than one month after Grundy County State's Attorney Russell Baker issued a three-page report finding that Morris Police Officer Nick Pampinella was justified in his use of deadly force, authorities have released all the body-camera videos surrounding Pampinella's deadly encounter with 40-year-old Morris resident Alivia Schwab on Sept. 29.

The two officers at the center of the deadly confrontation that ended Schwab's life were Pampinella, who has been a Morris police officer for over three years, and fellow officer Casie Price, who has been a Morris police officer since the spring of 2022.

Morris police have said their officers were called to the 1800 block of Anne Lane just before 11 a.m. for a report of a suicidal person.

According to the body camera videos that the Morris Police Department released late Friday afternoon, Pampinella can be heard taking charge of the incident. Even though he told officer Price to prepare to deploy her Taser at the 40-year-old Morris woman, Price does not do so as Schwab continues to slowly walk from her apartment, past the sidewalk and into the paved parking lot, toward Officer Pampinella, who is backpedaling and ordering Schwab to drop her 9-inch-long chef's knife. Instead, Schwab keeps walking closer to him, gripping the knife tightly in her left hand as she remained on the phone with a crisis hotline.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Pampinella is the K-9 officer for Morris police, a 2019 graduate of Western Illinois University. He also worked for eight months in 2019-2010 at Rantoul's Police Department before joining the Morris police force in March 2020.

After college, he also served as an intern at the Sandwich Police Department. Pampinella also grew up and graduated from high school in nearby Dwight. Grundy County's news radio station did a feature story on him when Pampinella joined the Morris police nearly four years ago.

"With regard to the events of September 29, 2023, I have reviewed the evidence gathered in the preliminary investigation conducted by the Illinois State Police and am prepared to release a preliminary opinion that Alivia L. Schwab was in a psychotic suicidal state of mind while armed with a 9-inch chef's knife and aggressively attacked police ignoring all commands to stop and drop the weapon," Grundy County State's Attorney Baker declared in his report issued in November.

According to Baker's report, "Officer Pampinella's actions of responding to a 911 call of a suicidal woman armed with a knife, as well as his use of deadly force regarding firing his weapon in the direction of Alivia L. Schwab, were legally justifiable given the totality of the circumstances."

In his findings, State's Attorney Baker pointed out how "Officer Pampinella reasonably believed his life was in danger as Alivia L. Schwab quickened her advance on him while branching a 9-inch chef's knife and ignoring all lawful commands, ultimately narrowing her distance from the officer to 8 to 10 feet when he discharged his weapon."

A police officer fatally shot a man Saturday night who approached him with a knife and had earlier yelled at people at a house party, complaining their music was too loud, Houston Police Department officials said.

Officers responded to a call about a disturbance involving a weapon around 11:20 p.m. at a residence in the 100 block of Palmyra Street near Fulton Street in the Northside area. The person who called the police said they were having a graduation party for their child when a man, who they believed lived in the neighborhood, confronted them, yelling the music was too loud — all while displaying a knife, Houston Executive Assistant Chief Ban Tien said.

The man with the knife left the party before officers arrived at the scene.

“The male basically threatened if they didn’t turn the music down, he will be back,” Tien said.

And he was.

After police arrived and while officers were talking to partygoers, the man with the knife returned. Still wielding the knife, he began approaching officers, who backed away, Tien said.

An officer yelled at the man to drop the knife, multiple times, and the man did not comply and kept walking toward police, Tien said.

“The officers begin to back up to continue to try to create distance, up until the point where the officer backed into the vehicle and he had nowhere to go and he subsequently discharged his firearm,” Tien said.

The officer reportedly fired their duty weapon more than once, striking the man multiple times. After the shooting, the officer attempted first aid on the man.

The man was taken to the hospital where he died.

The officer’s body camera was on during the shooting and the footage should be released within 30 days.

WEATHER: Keep track of flooding across Houston with our real-time tracker

A special investigation unit made up of law enforcement from Houston’s homicide division, its crime scene unit and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office and Office of Internal Affairs was investigating as of Saturday night.

Tien said the investigation was in its preliminary stages and police planned to interview more witnesses and canvas the area for any surveillance video.

BALTIMORE — A Baltimore Police officer fired more than a dozen gunshots at anti-violence activist Tyree Moorehead from a few feet away, according to body-worn camera footage released by the department that showed the fatal Sunday afternoon shooting.

After Officer Zachary Rutherford and trainee Michael Hazel arrived at the intersection of Fulton and Lafayette avenues in West Baltimore and called for backup, Rutherford ran toward Moorehead, who was holding a large kitchen knife as he stood over a woman lying on the ground.

“Get down,” Rutherford can be heard shouting as he exits the car and approaches Moorehead with his gun drawn.

Moorehead dove on top of the woman and in a slowed-down version of the video, appeared to be pointing a knife at the woman’s face.

From a few feet away, Rutherford fired his weapon at Moorehead, as he rolled off the woman and to the right, allowing the woman to move away. Rutherford continued to shoot at Moorehead, including toward his back, as he fell to the ground and then was lying on his back several feet away.

Moorehead appeared to be loosely holding the knife in his hand while bleeding from multiple wounds.

Rutherford reloaded his gun and pointed it at Moorehead but did not fire again, ordering him repeatedly for about 30 seconds to drop the knife.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison and Deputy Commissioner Brian Nadeau, who oversees the department’s Public Integrity Bureau, showed the two videos from Rutherford and a trainee’s body cameras at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

Rutherford has worked for the department since March and previously served three years with the Maryland Transit Administration police. Rutherford and Hazel have both been placed on administrative duties in accordance with department policy.

“We think it is clear that this officer saved this woman’s life,” Harrison said.

Asked whether the number of shots Rutherford fired was justified, Harrison said the investigation by the Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Attorney General’s Office would determine that.

Witnesses, including Moorehead’s father, Carlton Moorehead, questioned the number of shots police fired at him, as he was in close range and not running away.

“The police should not have shot him so many times,” his father said.

Demontea Madison, who also saw the shooting unfold, said the officer kept shooting at Moorehead when he was already on the ground, seemingly dying.

The officers responded to a 911 call about a woman being attacked by a man with a knife. The body-cam footage begins at 3:41 p.m. Separate video also showed officers providing medical aid to Moorehead.

The woman, who police did not identify, is a Baltimore City resident.

“It does not appear that the two are related or have any connection,” Nadeau said.

Moorehead was an anti-violence activist who spray-painted “No Shoot Zones” at scenes of shootings around the city. Moorehead’s family and friends described his behavior in the months leading up to the shooting as erratic and said he faced mental health challenges.

Miami Beach police shoot and kill bank robbery suspect

Miami Beach, United States

December 5, 2015

A suspected bank robber, allegedly armed with a razor, was shot and killed outside a Miami Beach, Florida, barber shop, police said.

First a "hold up" was reported this morning at a Bank of America in Miami Beach, Miami Beach Police Department spokeswoman Kathleen Prieto said. A 911 caller said the suspect was armed with a bomb and passed a note to the teller, she said.

Responding police were told the suspect fled the bank and went into a barber shop, Prieto said.

Police arrived at the barber shop and saw the suspect inside, but the suspect at first refused to come out, she said.

The suspect then "emerged with a straight edge razor in his hand," Prieto said.

"Shots were fired and the subject is deceased," she said.

The shooting of Michael Sungman Cho occurred on December 31, 2007, in the Orange County city of La Habra, California.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Cho, a 25-year-old Korean-American artist, was brandishing a tire iron outside a store and was shot by two police officers. The shooting was ruled justified by the Orange County district attorney. Cho's family received a $100,000 settlement from a lawsuit.

At 1 p.m. on New Year's Eve, police received a telephone report that an Asian man was vandalizing car windows on North Walnut Avenue; the officers who arrived on the scene were unable to find the man reported.[2][4] The same person called in an hour later to report that the man in question was at Walnut Avenue and Whittier Boulevard and had a tire iron.[1][2] Police arrived at the address of the alleged vandalism, the 7Gold Liquor Store at 545 Whittier Boulevard, after 2 p.m.; they contacted their dispatcher at 2:04 to state that they were outside of the liquor store with Cho. Their next communication with the dispatcher was 41 seconds later, during which they stated that they had shot Cho, and requested assistance from paramedics.[7] The paramedics pronounced Cho dead at the scene.[4]

The liquor store's closed-circuit television camera recorded 25 seconds of the incident. The relevant clip shows the two officers, Pete DiPasqua and John Jaime, with two guns drawn; Cho walked towards them and brought his right hand to his mouth.[8] He appeared to be holding an object in his left hand. He then turned to his right and walked out of the camera's view; police continued to point their guns at him.[2] The officers claimed that the object Cho was holding was the previously-reported tire iron, and that he threatened them with it and refused orders to put it down. Newspaper reports stated that police fired ten shots at Cho; La Habra police chief Dennis Kies was unable to confirm this number in an interview ten days after the shooting.[1]

Covington, Kentucky, United States

Two Covington police officers who fatally shot a man wielding a kitchen knife will not face criminal charges, Kenton County's top prosecutor said. Officers Brad Morris and Sean Sinacori were justified in their use of deadly force to defend themselves, Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney Rob Sanders said during a Thursday afternoon press conference. In a letter to the Kentucky State Police, the agency investigating the shooting, Sanders wrote that he reached his decision after reviewing the evidence and finding no probable cause to believe either officer committed a crime.

The officers responded early on March 14 to Cambridge Square Apartments on Promontory Drive after a resident at the apartment complex called 911 saying a man with a knife was trying to break into their apartment through the back door.

"He was beating on the door with the knife," the caller told a dispatcher.

When the officers reached the apartment, they encountered 34-year-old Charles Neace, who was armed with a knife.

The officers drew their guns and shouted numerous commands to Neace, including orders to "put down the knife," according to body camera footage of the encounter released Thursday. Neace did not heed the officers' warnings and continued approaching them.

Neace waved the knife around in his hand, at times raising it level with his head, the footage shows. After pausing briefly and placing his hands on his knees, Neace stepped toward the officers. They opened fire.

Sanders said the officers fired a total of 12 rounds, nine of which hit Neace, who was staying with a female companion at the apartment complex. Neace was standing anywhere from 12 to 20 feet away from the officers when he was shot, a distance he could've easily closed within a matter of seconds, the prosecutor added.

"Put that knife in those officers' neck, he'd have killed them in a split second," Sanders said of the danger Neace posed to Morris and Sinacori.

In his letter, Sanders wrote that Neace was "acting erratically" when confronted by police, adding that he repeatedly threatened the officers and challenged them to fight him.

"Somebody wasn't going home to their family that night," Sanders said. "Mr. Neace forced that decision upon the officers and I'm glad that neither officer was injured and both went home to their families."

Sanders said the officers were placed on paid administrative leave and must meet with a mental health professional to ensure they are fit to return to duty.

Columbus, Ohio

Around 2:30am, August 30th 2022

While attempting to arrest the victim on multiple warrants (including domestic violence, assault, and felony improper handling of a firearm), long-time Police Officer Ricky Anderson shot 20 year old Donovan Lewis dead in his bed, according to a police statement. Lewis was fatally shot once in the abdomen.

The officer feared that Donovan was holding a weapon, which was later revealed to have been a vape pen, and reacted accordingly. Though the officers rendered aid after handcuffing the man, he would succumb to his injuries in Grant Medical Center hospital around 3:19am, less than an hour after officers entered the apartment, WCMH reported.

Court records show Lewis was wanted on a felony charge of improper handling of a firearm, as well as a misdemeanor probation violation and misdemeanor charges of domestic violence and assault filed Aug. 10 in connection with Lewis' girlfriend, who is pregnant.

Ricky Anderson was put on paid leave following the incident. On September 7, the Columbus Division of Police Chief Elaine Bryant announced the department would no longer execute pre-planned arrest warrants at probate homes for misdemeanor offenses. The change does not apply to SWAT or task force personnel. On October 25, the Franklin County Coroner's Office ruled Lewis' death a homicide.

10 March 2024

SURPRISE, Ariz. - Surprise Police officials have released new details on a deadly weekend shooting that involved one of their officers.

The incident happened at around 3 a.m. on March 10, when officers responded to the area of Waddell and Dysart roads. According to a statement released by Surprise Police on Mar. 11, officers responded to the area following a call that involved a "reported argument between a husband and wife who live at the home."

"Two Surprise police officers responded. As one of the officers entered the home, the adult female ran outside," read a portion of the statement.

Police say they were then confronted by a man, identified as 44-year-old Trinidad Ledesma.

Ledesma, investigators say, was armed with a shotgun, and that was when the officer-involved shooting happened.

"The Buckeye Police Department will investigate this incident as part of the West Valley Investigative Response Team protocols," Surprise PD said, in an earlier statement.

PHOENIX — Newly released body camera footage shows the moments leading up to when Surprise police fatally shot a man during a domestic dispute call in Surprise last month.

The incident occurred after officers arrived at a residence near Dysart and Waddell roads around 3 a.m. on March 10, the Surprise Police Department said in a critical incident briefing video released Friday.

They were responding to a call from a minor reporting a domestic verbal argument.

“My parents are, uh, keep on arguing and they're like, keeping me up all night and it's just being annoying,” the caller said.

After the dispatcher asked if there were any weapons inside the house, the caller replied, “Uh, no, I don't think so. I think they're just, like, verbally arguing but like sometimes they do this and … it just gets out of control.”

When two officers arrived, they could hear screaming inside the residence.

As the officers approached the front door, a woman exited and said, “He's trying to hit me.”

One officer stayed with the woman, while the other entered into the home.

As the officer opened the door, 44-year-old Trinidad Ledesma could be seen walking from the living room to the kitchen area, out of the camera view.

“As the officer turned the corner, he encountered Ledesma facing him with a black shotgun in his right hand,” Sgt. Richard Hernandez said in the briefing video.

Ledesma could be heard in the video saying, “Don't come in. Don't come near, boss.”

According to Hernandez, Ledesma began to bring his shotgun up, in the officer's direction, prompting the officer to fire his weapon at least seven times. Ledesma was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer involved in the fatal shooting has six years of service experience, with less than one year with the Surprise Police Department.

An investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
